Michael Smith hit the Premier League's first nine-darter for nearly three years in a 7-5 win over Daryl Gurney in Dublin.

The Englishman delighted a sell-out crowd at 3Arena as he followed two maximum 180s with a 141 checkout.

It was the first perfect leg in the competition since Adrian Lewis in April 2017 and only the ninth in what is the 16th Premier League season.

"It's a feeling you can't explain - it's amazing," Smith, 29, said.

Most sport is currently suspended in the UK but this Friday the PDC is launching a new tournament featuring darts players in their own homes.

The PDC Home Tour, will see all players with a tour card have the chance to feature across 32 consecutive nights.

Four players will be in action each evening in a league format before the knockout stage of the competition.

"This will provide a regular supply of live sport to fans," said PDC chairman Barry Hearn.

Australian Kyle Anderson made his return to darts on the PDC Home Tour on Saturday after recovering from coronavirus.

The 32-year-old lost 5-2 to Sweden’s Daniel Larsson in his first match since spending four weeks in isolation without access to a dartboard.

Anderson, the world number 45, tested positive for coronavirus at the end of March.

"I first threw a dart about a week ago,” he told PDC TV.

Rob Cross is pleased that the World Matchplay will be going ahead next month on it’s original dates whether it can be held with a crowd or elsewhere behind closed doors.
Cross said it’ll be tough to potentially go straight back into a big tournament like the World Matchplay almost straight away but as defending champion, he is glad that the sport is beginning to move again in the right direction.

“It’s great news, I’m over-the-moon. I know that the PDC has been working so hard to keep the sport ticking along despite such difficult circumstances,” said Cross to DartsWorld.

“It’s fair to say we are all desperate to get back to the big stage if it is safe to do so for all players”.

“It will be tough to come back and straight into a major event like the Matchplay. But it’s a sign that life is getting back to normal hopefully.”

QUOTE
The PDC have announced that the World Matchplay will be taking place on it’s original dates and with news expected regarding the ProTour as well, the season restart is well underway.
But despite that, one of the obstacles that is in the way regards a mandatory 14-day quarantine for foreign players. This means that if this is enforced, players would have to come over for at least a month at a time to play but this is something that the PDC hopes to avoid.

“Of course I have daily contact with the British government and sports minister and I tell them my story. I ask them for an exception for professional athletes. Not only darters, but also snooker players and Formula 1. Formula 1 has already received an exception, so they are on the right track, ”said PDC chairman Barry Hearn in an interview with RTL News .

“But what do we do when the athletes are indoors? We will develop the most advanced and safe method, as we have done with snooker,” he continued. “We created a bubble there. Everyone is tested before entering and if you are negative you can go in and not out. Everything has been cleaned 72 hours in advance, so the entire building is safe. We hope the government recognises that this measure does not require quarantine.”

The PDC have announced the resumption of the Players Championship events in the form of the PDC Summer Series which will take place between July 8-12 at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.
With the World Matchplay set to take place either in front of a crowd or behind closed doors between July 18-26, all 128 Tour Card holders will be given the opportunity to compete in five events in a row.

This is subject to UK Government Quarantine policy on overseas visitors. As usual, prize money will stand at £75,000 per event, with all money counting towards the PDC Order of Merit.

The World Matchplay is taking place on it’s original dates of 18-26 July but the venue is still unknown with a decision based on crowds to be taken nearer to the tournament known as the second biggest on the PDC calendar.
Earlier on Friday, it was announced that the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes would host the PDC Summer Series; which will see five days in a row of Players Championship action.

A venue that has worked well in recent times for Matchroom’s Championship League Snooker; it could yet be utilised for the World Matchplay.
