BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions (Thurs Update + Top 5 Sales)

Posted by: Joe. 14th May 2016, 10:27 AM

Quite a lot going on in the chart this week! Meghan Trainor releases her sophomore album Thank You and Kygo releases his debut 'Cloud Nine', with Radiohead, Beyonce and Drake all looking to continue on with high sales.

As far as singles go, it's getting rather crowded, Reggie 'N' Bollie should make the top 40 with their first ever single 'New Girl' and David Guetta releases the euro(football, not vision) theme, which features Zara Larsson. OneRepbublic, The Stone Roses and Gareth Malone and the Choir also have big new releases. Not to forget that we have Eurovision this week, which always has an effect on the chart. How many of this year's acts will make the top 40? Will any of these make the top 10?

Breakdown of the week

Album sales this week are so tragic that Meghan Trainor can be number 2 selling only 2500 copies in the first day.

Posted by: cqmerqn 14th May 2016, 10:36 AM

Kygo will make the top 5 for sure, especially with streaming.

I think Meghan will underperform, perhaps a top ten debut?

Singles wise, RnB should make the top 40 but streaming will damage their position a lot I think.
OneRepublic will debut outside of the top 40 unfortunately.

Streaming will definitely keep a lot of Eurovision acts out of the top 40 for sure. I'm starting to wonder if any actually make the top 40 to be honest..

Posted by: liamk97 14th May 2016, 10:42 AM

When we have three albums in the Top 10 selling only on downloads and streams, another (Skepta) relying mostly on downloads and streams, and the fact most of said info will be missing from the Saturday update, Meghan "at #2 with 2.5k" is very misleading.

So HMV consider Kygo a "metal" act huh? That genre has certainly changed over the years...

Drake to remain at #1, don't want Calvin nor Justin taking it. All of the potential Eurovision entries to flop (especially that awful Frans track), David Guetta & OneRepublic to also flop and Reggie N Bollie to absolutely smash biggrin.gif

Beyoncé to return to number 1 in Album chart as Sales of new releases are low?

Posted by: Hassaan 14th May 2016, 11:53 AM

Gareth Malone's choir seems to be doing well on iTunes but it'd have to shift well over 100,000 to be in with a shot of becoming the official #1, but it might only need 60-70,000 to make it on sales alone. Given that all it got was a passing mention on the documentary itself it's doing well.

Reggie 'N' Bollie I think are set for the top 5. I personally would like to see the paid-for sales a lot higher than they have been previously - I know streaming shows us which songs are most popular, but Adele managed 250k downloads and 73k streams so both can be done.

Posted by: Mart!n 14th May 2016, 11:54 AM

Kygo's album have seen it advertised in the ad breaks on TV, the album should do well.

Justin could take the #1 single, his performance is going to be late probably around 10:15pm (ish) just before the Eurovision results

Seems like it will be between her and Drake, with the latter putting his album on Spotify. I suspect Radiohead will keep up their tradition of having huge second week % falls so will pose little threat of holding onto the #1 spot.

Posted by: Hadji 14th May 2016, 02:22 PM

I want Kygo for #1 album and Calvin or JT for #1 single

Posted by: Andr00w 14th May 2016, 02:44 PM

Sadly I think Meghan will end up between #5-#10, there doesn't seem to much momentum with the album!

His label automatically gets him strong airplay on both Heart and Capital, even the biggest labels can't always get that. And let's not forget they're really good for promo, he performed on X Factor last year.

The material isn't good enough, people aren't interested.

Posted by: LushLife 14th May 2016, 05:49 PM

Actually gutted that Meghan could open with less than 15,000 considering the amount of promo and success of 'Title', I know 'No' and 'Me Too' have had nowhere near the success of 'All About That Bass' and 'Lips R Moving', I thought she had a strong enough fanbase to debut top two so I'm actually rather sad as her songs are a major improvement from her last campaign.

I honestly believe Meghan has some sales missing. As pleased as I'd be to see her flop, I think 2.5k is incredibly unrealistic.

It's still ahead on iTunes because it's only been on sale since Sunday so is still in its first week technically !

Would be great for JT to get to no1 although Drakes streaming is still strong so think he will take it again.

Either way it's a strong top 3 for me. Unless something comes along out of the blue I can see the top 3 remaining as it is for another 2-3 weeks.

Unfortunately Drake is selling 5k more in steams a day than Justin and 2.5k more than Calvin. Downloads are so poor at the moment I don't think it will be enough to keep him off #1 this week.

Posted by: Dobbo 15th May 2016, 09:38 AM

Come on Drake & streaming cheer.gif

Posted by: Doctor Blind 15th May 2016, 09:44 AM

From the midweeks last week when effectively only daily streaming data was included (Apple failed to report on Wednesday AND Thursday last week), JT was doing around 4K/day, Calvin and Rihanna around 7.5K/day and Drake 11 K/day. Not sure how much that will change this week, but you can see Justin needs about a 70K lead on download sales to be in with a chance of beating Drake.

Posted by: Mart!n 15th May 2016, 09:54 AM

I've had enough of Drake is he going for a record or something, I can't see anything toppling him from the top if JT and Calvin don't do it.

It is slowing down, he was averaging nearly 1.3 million streams/day the week before, and this week that dropped to 1.2 million/day.

We are going to have to get used to this slower turnover - there were only 13 different tracks at the top of http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=168351.

These mids look almost too good to be true - missing streaming must play a part laugh.gif Shawn top 40, Frans almost top 40, Little Mix top 10 and Drake off #1. I predict that none of these will happen come Friday :')

I've got no idea but it's listed as a re-entry under Music Complete on the OCC website.

Posted by: Mart!n 16th May 2016, 05:14 PM

Is it me, there seems to be a huge chunk of sales missing, I expected Calvin higher than 33k surely, hard to tell. Joe and Jake seem to be too high. Even Stone Roses managed top 4, I expected them to be far lower.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 16th May 2016, 05:19 PM

Really hope JT can hold on, but I doubt Drake can be caught just yet, argh, can't quite believe this'll be it's sixth week, it doesn't feel that long somehow. Hope Stones Roses can make the play zone at least, would be quite something hearing Radio 1 play that!

Very surprised (but glad) Kygo's outselling Meghan Trainor ohmy.gif Didn't see that one coming at all.

The OCC must be combining 'Music Complete' with 'Complete Music' then... That's interesting. Then again, 'Complete Music' has the same track-listing spread across two discs (albeit containing extended mixes in place of the originals). Perhaps it has something to do with the fact it comes with a download code for the original album?

Radio 1's 'chart contender' from last week [OneRepublic] only at #51 in the mids tho laugh.gif

It does indeed look as if some streaming is missing though.

It's Ł12 in stores, and a highly critically acclaimed album. Why are you surprised?

Posted by: FleetSeb 16th May 2016, 06:25 PM

Beyonce and JT staying at number 1 for the rest of the week would be great, but with Calvin and Drake's superior streaming I'm not hopeful.

Honestly, Bey haters seem to lose all common sense when talking about her. It really is something to behold.

Why are people willing to spend Ł14 on the most critically acclaimed album of the year, that comes with a very big budget film to go with it? I mean, really? Just baffling.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 16th May 2016, 07:26 PM

Not sure how much data is missing, but here's how they've changed from last week, and my projections for Friday.

01 Drake −19% 99,964
02 Justin Timberlake +38% 97,139
03 Rihanna/Calvin −15% 93,619

Posted by: Ethan 16th May 2016, 07:28 PM

there must be a fair chunk of streaming data missing (2 days seems par for the course on mondays these days~) in which case drake has an easy 6th week on lock, while on the albums drake and kygo are likely to be rather closer to beyoncé ~ could be a close call!

Posted by: cqmerqn 16th May 2016, 07:34 PM

If streams are missing, then I could see Drake getting the top spot with Kygo advancing to 2.

I guess it will be a close one..

Actually on iTunes Justin Timberlake is selling 133% more than Drake (i.e 2.3 times more), however this is reversed on streaming (Drake is streaming roughly 2.3 times more than JT) - and because streaming currently has somewhere between 70-80% contribution to total 'chart sales' (even in the Top 10) the lead on downloads is fairly irrelevant.

CD single has been doing well on Pre-order to be fair though (and that's not released until 3rd June).
This song will probably peak just before Euros start on June 10th (when optimism levels are still high).

Highly unlikely to stay top 10, it sold a fraction of what the rest of the top 20 sold yesterday, and that's without Saturday streaming being taken into account.

Posted by: Hadji 17th May 2016, 01:29 PM

Shame JT won't be official #1. Poor RnB looking like they'll miss the top 20. Shame they won't outpeak Louisa. I was wanting them to follow the tradition where the runner-up does better than the winner. The last time this failed to happen was 2013

Stone Roses should break the top 15 by their decreasing sales it should sell around 25-29k!

On the Manics, if Wales do well they will do just fine with their song and as the build-up to the tournament gets closer it could well rise - doesnt really matter if its the manics, its the football thatll make it rise.

Why not? I imagine the streaming will be huge but I can't see much overtaking it on sales. Maybe the choir may come close on sales.

As far as the X Factor Class of 2013 is concerned, the runner-up (Nicholas) released a single which went to #73. Sam didn't release a single but she did manage a #1 album, while Nicholas managed #6. Maybe Reggie N Bollie will end up being a slow-burner?

Really? It obviously can't send the play count in real time though, what if someone's playing songs offline and remains offline for a week? Will they count towards the chart once they reconnect to the spotify server a week later? I realise that's probably a far-fetched scenario but I think it's a valid question.

Looks like the only new entry top 25 we'll be getting this week is Stone Roses then. Expected Reggie N Bollie and David Guetta to be doing a lot better than they are currently.

Posted by: ___∆___ 18th May 2016, 02:52 PM

Reggie & Bollie falling quickly but still likely to stay Top 30 which is more than I expected - They will be swiftly dropped by Syco though following this 'flop'. Nathan Sykes already out of the Top 40 - They should have followed up his last single quickly and tried to capitalise on the fact he had achieved a Top 10 rather than waiting over 5 months.

The chart also seems like it is going to be Eurovision free apart from the JT boost!

I think RnB might level out a bit now that the Saturday streaming (and all of yesterday's is added back in).

I'm not surprised about David Guetta, the overall reaction to the song hasn't been too good, even the R1 Djs have been a bit snotty about it.

oh R1 DJs don't like it? not surprised, it's so typical of them now to throw shade at a David Guetta record ever since 'Shot Me Down'. rolleyes.gif also doesn't help that it's seen as 'cool' to hate this new song of his especially as Diplo, King of EDM and Official Inventor Of Trap Music had a massive go at him. sleep.gif

Hopefully in time the song will be a big hit regardless.

Nick Grimshaw still shades I Took a Pill in Ibiza too. This morning Tom Odell commented that it had really good lyrical content (which i 100% agree with) and Nick Grimshaw was like "wut".

I do agree this new Guetta song isn't his best though, I was really hoping his track with Disciples was getting a push instead as I much prefer it.

Nick Grimshaw really needs to be kicked off the radio. Scott Mills does the breakfast show a lot better than Nick anyway.

I prefer the Disciples track too but I'm guessing it's being pushed as a Disciples single as they've got lead credit on it. Shame that's not going anywhere.

Short of us sending an actual radio playlisted hit single again I think Eurovision songs are unlikely to chart in the top 40 here again. Streamers just aren't interested in listening to the entries sadly, and this seems to be largely reflected across the whole of Europe - big on iTunes, nothing on streams.

Regardless of how big this RnB track ends up being, I doubt they'll be with Syco much longer. Same goes for Louisa for that matter...

Oh I very much doubt RNB will be long-runners in the music industry, not sure they'll even release an album, but it's way too early to write off New Girl or say they'll be dropped off the back of its debut. Way too early to call re. Louisa, let's see what she releases first!

02 Justin Timberlake +38% 97,139

I could be wrong but I can't see RnB hanging around and be more like a 28-56-Out kind of hit? Surely an act like them are front loaded? Also Syco are brutal for dropping acts - Bars & Melody (Top 5), Loveable Rogues (Top 10) etc, have proved this and if Syco are prepared to drop Ben Haenow after a Platinum single plus a silver album then RnB probably already have their contracted ripped up!

True but if anything the Eurovision songs have performed worse on iTunes this year.

Remember in 2014 when four of them made the official top 40 (just before streaming was introduced to the chart and iTunes still accounted for about 80% of its makeup).

I'm quite sure that four Eurovision songs won't make the sales top 40 this week...Joe and Jake might.

Posted by: Dobbo 18th May 2016, 10:11 PM

I really don't think RnB will be going anywhere soon! (Certainly hope not). I think it's very wide-spanning in terms of popularity and should be a fairly good performer on streaming.

Posted by: Joe. 18th May 2016, 10:23 PM

Posted by: gooddelta 19th May 2016, 11:27 AM

I don't think Drake's going to fall far anytime soon, I was at a house party the other day and One Dance was played and out of 20-ish people in their late 20s only about 3 had any clue what the track was. Most people seemed to enjoy it though.

I do like the Justin track too, but I don't particularly LOVE either of them. In fact all of the number ones this year have been 'nice enough but nothing more' for me. The year has got off to quite a non-descript start.

I'm fairly sure Bars & Melody only had a one-single deal with Syco and Loveable Rogues chose to leave the label too. What we hear in the press with acts like Ben (that it was a mutual decision) might cover up what actually happened - Something I Need did well for him but he only reached #21 with Second Hand Heart, and they might have expected better (although if they did they'd have promoted him more).

Guessing only Frans will make the top 75? At least that will be the fifth Melodifestivalen winner to make the top 75 in a row cheer.gif

That may well be the last Eurovision song to ever impact the UK chart in any way, unless Spotify/Apple Music add some of the songs onto prominent playlists in future years. But it's hard to tell how it would have impacted in other years. Heroes did alright on streaming last year (wasn't its third top 75 week actually due to holding up well on streaming?) and Euphoria might have been streamed more than others. I guess an incredibly popular and commercial winner might stand a slim chance of taking off.

It'd have been much higher had it has been released soon after Britain's Got Talent. Gabz & Bars and Melody got top 10 singles by doing so (releasing the song that made them popular). His audition video might have nearly 60 million views, and the video of the cover he did of the song 2 years ago at nearly 20 million but people need to be made aware of it.

Maybe so, but maybe he suffered from 'under-promotion', I don't think they targeted the right audience and he got a fraction of the promotional push Fleur got.

Reggie N Bollie not making the top 20? Streaming really is pushing them down isn't it? Mind you it wouldn't surprise me if the choir were #1 on sales.
