Hello chart fans hi.gif

Random question (not at all related to the fact that Madonna has released an album this week ohmy.gif) but what if... someone went into a store or online and ordered TONNES of an album on its release week, i'm talking like 3000 copies (enough to make a different on chart position)... And then, the week later, they returned them and got their money back. Would those sales impact the chart for which they were brought... and then what would happen the week after and in terms of the album's overall sales many months later?

Have I thought of a way to manipulate the charts in favour of my favourite artists? unsure.gif

Bulk buys would be spotted and excluded. You could only hope to get away with it if you went round a large number of shops and bought one or two copies in each one.

If you took them back the next week, I think they would count as negative sales so you could cause it to fall down a long way the following week.

I think the occ spots bulk buys pretty easily either if it's 5 downloads on iTunes from the same IP address or 5 simultaneous buys in a record store
I'd say those sales would be excluded already on week 1 even if just 5 not alone 300 or 3000

For people who bought the album more than once but different versions.

Like for instance if someone got a standard and deluxe at same time from the same store like the artists own website would they be two sales for the album?

But if it was a case of buying the same version like two copies of the deluxe it would only be one. Is that right?

I don't know if this is an urban myth or not, but I remember hearing about a Mel B album (can't remember which one, although could just as well have been a different artist) which actually had negative sales one week because more people returned the album than bought it. Don't know how much truth there was in it though.
