I've just listening to Same Heart and it made me think of how f***ing devastated I was when that DNQ'd... It is in my top 3 of 2014 of ALL the songs, and felt so powerful that I really thought it had a chance :/ I don't so much mind DNQs when I accept that it's going to happen (for example I adored Unbroken and Playing With Numbers but I knew they would struggle, so they didn't feel as bad), but I was unprepared as for some reason I guess I was caught up in how much *I* loved it and couldn't see how it would DNQ, let alone come not far off last manson.gif

By a similar token, Hear Them Calling totally threw me as I was sure it was through, that was a really strong semi so I liked most of the qualifiers but for that to lose out to songs that sounded borderline at best like I Stand and Lighthouse was ridiculous. I felt the same about Paper which was one of my faves in that semi, and it really sounded like a qualifier or hit. There was that "Iceland DNQd twice with great songs" feeling, but that didn't stop me feeling livid at it DNQing, because with the quality I had again tricked myself into "surely it has to" laugh.gif

Then there's Haba Haba, which was my first year properly following semis. Idk what the fan hype and odds were like at all but my god I was annoyed at that not getting through, it felt like perfect Eurovision sad.gif But that wasn't as bad as when I get all invested in odds, hype, predictions etc. and then something ends up DNQing and all my rage that's pent up gets out after semis like the above examples laugh.gif

Anymore examples from you all?

"Hear Them Calling" is definitely a great example! I otherwise think 2016 and 2015 had it right though.

2011 lost a few much better songs to weaker songs in the semis. Worst contest of the decade for me. "Haba Haba" was one of the best in the contest, but it did come off flat live.

For 2017 you can't really look any further than "Blackbird" - it was so haunting and magical; was such a disappointment it missed out. I also felt Iceland were robbed again with "Paper" which I think sounds very Sigrid and would be a hit for her. You also have to feel bad for Switzerland last year as "Apollo" was a firm fan favourite. Switzerland really need to pull it out the bag it seems to do anything. I also felt "Verona" was a dead cert qualifier for Estonia but that collapsed with that performance. I no longer feel that fussed on Macedonia not qualifying though as "Dance Alone" sounds a lot more basic a year on; I think the live performance killed it for me.

In 2014 we absolutely adored Portugal's entry and was gutted they didn't make the final. We played "Quero Ser Tua" all the time in our hotel when holidaying in Porto later that year! I was surprised Ireland was so poorly received, one of the best entries from them in recent memory for me. Not usually keen. Israel was also robbed, you're right Liam.

Those and other DNQs from this decade I felt were robbed or was surprised they didn't make it:

Norma John - Blackbird (Finland 2017)
Svala - Paper (Iceland 2017)
TimeBelle - Apollo (Switzerland 2017)
Koit Toome & Laura - Verona (Estonia 2017)
Greta Salome - Hear Them Calling (Iceland 2016)
Suzy - Quero Ser Tua (Portugal 2014)
Can-Linn ft Kasey Smith - Heartbeat (Ireland 2014)
Mei Finegold - Same Heart (Israel 2014)
Who See ft Nina Zizic - Igranka (Montenegro 2013) - it was just so out there and there were spacemen!
Valentina Monetta - Crisalide (Vola) (San Marino 2013)
Takasa - You And Me (Switzerland 2013)
Pernilla Karlsson - Nar Jag Blundar (Finland 2012) - such a beautiful song, I guess it's not that surprising it missed out but one of my favourite DNQs ever, if not my favourite!
Trackshittaz - Woki Mit Deim Popo (Austria 2012) - okay this is no surprise, and really it's terrible, but I enjoyed it! Hard to believe they went from this to victory in 2 years with something the polar opposite!
Joan Franka - You And Me (Netherlands 2012) - it was getting to the point you wondered if Netherlands would ever qualify again though this has now been rectified thankfully, on a big scale!
Stella Mwangi - Haba Haba (Norway 2011)
Anastasia Vinnikova - I Love Belarus (Belarus 2011) - their best entry, though incredibly arrogant really haha! So enjoyable!
Kristina - Horehronie (Slovakia 2010) - if it's the one I'm thinking of...
InCulto - Eastern European Funk (Lithuania 2010) - not usually a fan of Lithuanian entries but this was cool
Femminem - Lako Je Sve (Croatia 2010) - again, if it's the one I'm thinking of...

Biiitch no. 'Yodel It!' Is a Eurovision pop masterpiece *.*

I agree on Kate Ryan and 'Je t'adore' though. Possibly the most I've ever been shocked at not making it through. 'Hear Them Calling' was also a big shock at the time for me.

I actually did like Yodel It but Semi #2 last year was atrocious with so many of my faves not making it through.

Switzerland are robbed so often. Both Era Stupendo and The Highest Heights in 2008/9 were fantastic. And many more examples detailed further up this thread!

Agree with Je T'adore and If I Had Your Love and no way did Anna Bergendahl deserve to DNQ, even though granted it's not the strongest Swedish entry ever.

To be honest I could list about 30 more besides...

I'd like to highlight Cristina Scarlat's Wild Soul. Last in the semi for that was a crime.

Also Cake To Bake from the same semi.

The "one semi final" era was definitely the worst time for unjust DNQs since only 10 could go through and there'd usually be one or two AQs that would come right near the bottom but went straight through because they'd come top ten the year before (2006 is especially awful for this!). The one that I scratch my head about the most is definitely Lithuania 2005.

Considering what they get away with sending these days, this being their worst ever performing entry is a bit absurd!

Love "Congratulations" - if it wasn't for Lordi, I'd say Silvia Night totally stole ESC 2006. Incredible!

It was so unjustly robbed by the one semi final format of 2006 sad.gif

Just imagine how much better ESC 2006 would have been with two semis:

SEMI FINAL ONE

SEMI FINAL TWO

Bulgaria, Slovenia, Albania, Belgium, Cyprus, Poland and Iceland qualify in this scenario (which they didn't IRL) while Moldova, Malta, Denmark, Switzerland, Israel and Latvia fail to qualify (while they were Auto-Qualifiers IRL).

Of the ones you've put out, I'd put through Andorra (they deserved to scrape into the final 3 times in their short lived career; I hope they come back eventually), Monaco (it's fun!) and the Netherlands (it was catchy). 2006 and 2007 would be completely transformed under the current format I think.

Oh I just ranked them by number of points they got in the actual contest (and then gave them more realistic semi points based on the results of the 2015 ESC semis lol) - wasn't picking faves - wouldn't have advanced Lithuania's sorry excuse of a song if I was lol.

I don't know about that transformed 2006, I mean, I wish I had been watching that one, but I've never really caught the love for Je t'adore (yet another Belgium entry I think is overrated, quelle surprise I'm sure), and Congratulations is fun for one listen but grates hard after that. Poland's DNQ is a really good song but beyond that there wasn't too much out I'd call a crime.

It's top-class emo.

I feel like I might have... alone, similar feelings about Romania if that DNQs this year. And if Gracia's Run & Hide had not been from Germany I'd probably be alone on it in this topic too.

I think primarily it was just such a bloodbath with only about 35% of the songs qualifying from the semi (unlike today's semis where we have at least 50%+ qualifiers.
