BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Top 100 Best Selling Albums Of The Decade...So Far!

Posted by: Dasher 2nd January 2017, 03:37 PM

Another year done and it's time to unveil the new Top 100 for the decade over the next 12 days!

The charts covered here are 16.01.10- 05.01.17 and the format will be:

POSITION, TITLE, ARTIST, MOVEMENT THROUGH THE DECADE, SALES, TOTAL SALES (T/S) IF RELEASED PRE 2010.

Thanks to Youtube, MW, Vidcapper, and some other sources!

Posted by: cqmerqn 2nd January 2017, 03:55 PM

Hoping to see Ellie here biggrin.gif

Posted by: liamk97 2nd January 2017, 04:00 PM

Doesn't seem like 10 minutes since the last edition! drama.gif

I suspect Bob Marley's Legend has sold enough in the past year to break into the Top 100 of the decade.

Posted by: T Boy 2nd January 2017, 04:00 PM

Oh I love this! Looking forward to it!

Posted by: Gezza 2nd January 2017, 04:05 PM

The year has been "poor" for sales without doubt with no new albums released in the year making the top 100 though we do have three new albums in the rundown! There's plenty of movement however with 62 fallers, 18 non movers and 17 going up!

Posted by: GTH 2nd January 2017, 04:06 PM

Yay, I have been waiting for this! cheer.gif

We'll start tomorrow but here's what we lost in 2016

Posted by: mdh 2nd January 2017, 05:13 PM

No significant losses then laugh.gif Hoping to see Bastille's Bad Blood make an appearance!

QUOTE(Jandeep @ Jan 2 2017, 06:13 PM) *
i suspect the new entries will be Coldplay and Little Mix Get Weird. I do wonder if Beyoncé has made it with Beyoncé. If not she can't be far off.

Posted by: cqmerqn 2nd January 2017, 05:15 PM

Just realised Ellie could have two albums here? biggrin.gif

Wasn't here for the last countdown so I don't know what to expect! ohmy.gif

I joined Buzzjack around the time you did this last year - has it been 12 months already? ohmy.gif

Shame about Echoes falling out but it is no surprise. Will isn't really an artist that benefits well from trickle sales unlike some others.

When this will get started?

Posted by: Gezza 3rd January 2017, 05:25 PM

Tonight

Posted by: Gezza 3rd January 2017, 06:06 PM

100. #3- The Script (83-94-97-100) 537,800
99. THE XX- XX (37-59-70-72-83-95-99) 560,200 (T/S 603,100)
98. III- Take That (93-98) 562,900
97. GREATEST HITS- Westlife (50-51-65-73-90-97) 566,800
96. LES MISERABLES- Original Cast Recording (82-88-92-96) 570,000

We start of the rundown with a few boybands who must be on their way out of the chart next year, Take That & Westlife. Take That and The Script are two of 24 acts with at least 2 albums on the rundown but that won’t be repeated next year either, Westlife meanwhile are one of only 14 albums on our list that old less than 10,000 copies last year.

Posted by: Gezza 3rd January 2017, 06:13 PM

95. A DECADE IN THE SUN- THE BEST OF- The Stereophonics (85-93-91-95) 583,200 (T/S 1,321,200)
94. NUMBER ONES- Michael Jackson (xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-100-94) 588,500 (T/S 2,417,500)
93. TIME- Rod Stewart (64-69-84-93) 598,000
92. ONLY REVOLUTIONS- Biffy Clyro (26-39-49-59-71-87-92) 604,900 (T/S 728,700)
91. MERRY CHRISTMAS BABY- Rod Stewart (71-62-68-81-91) 605,300

Double Rod here but his Christmas set certainly isn’t selling as well annually as Buble for some reason. Strong improvement for Michael Jackson however who is taking the slow and steady route with his 14 year old GH set, meanwhile the GH set for Stereophonics cooled last year after a good 2015, in peaking at No 21 this decade it is the lowest peaker on the survey with Jackson having peaked only 5 places higher since 2010.

I never thought I would see Biffy Clyro in a rod Stewart sandwich!!

Do you have an example of Rods Christmas album sales depreciation per Christmas by any chance?

I only have annual totals so I can't for sure say when they were sold but I estimate he only sold about 8k in 2015 and 13k in 2016. On the whole Streaming seems to have helped the really low sellers increase sales year on year even if it hasn't revived the top end of the charts.

Posted by: Steve201 3rd January 2017, 10:12 PM

Thanks Gezza amazed he didn't sell more in November and December, suppose there's quite a lot of Christmas albums that have been bought to the market in this decade!

90. RED- Taylor Swift (80-81-88-90) 608,400
89. HOME- Rudimental (78-83-89) 613,200
88. THE GIFT- Susan Boyle (13-32-40-55-65-79-88) 617,300
87. IF YOU WAIT- London Grammar (85-85-87) 617,300
86. DO YOU WANT THE TRUTH OR SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL- Paloma Faith (42-64-73-63-67-80-86) 625,400 (T/S 755,500)

Remember when Susan Boyle could shift albums? 2010 in fact but her album only spent 11 weeks on the chart, the shortest of any album here, anyway she’s joined by the first of three Paloma Faith albums evidencing how big she’s become, and of course Swift’s commercial breakthrough album in the UK is also hanging in well.

Posted by: Rafael x 4th January 2017, 05:58 PM

4 out 5 of 1D's albums will make it, FOUR is the first one.

85. THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP 2- Eminem (91-74-82-85) 631,000
84. TURN IT UP- Pixie Lott (17-33-41-53-62-73-84) 634,700 (T/S 883,000)
83. FOUR- One Direction (92-76-83) 635,700
82. SEASONS OF MY SOUL- Rumer (36-36-43-54-61-71-82) 642,000
81. LEGEND- Bob Marley & The Wailers (NEW) 644,200 (T/S 4,200,200)

Three new albums make our list after 2016, I say new but of course “Legend” is 35 years old now, still you can’t keep a good album down, interestingly only 9 albums on this list sold more than it did in 2016! And only 2 albums have spent more weeks in the chart since 2010 on this list. The rest of the artists are all experiencing downward tilts as the years go by, but Pixie Lott and Rumer get the biggest drops year on year as they fall 11 places.

Posted by: Rafael x 4th January 2017, 06:12 PM

FOUR sold ~13k since last update in March, amazing!

How did you come by 4,200,200 total sales? The OCC put it on ~3.5m and 16th on all time list. Maybe I'm missing something?

I'll allow Gezza to explain further, but sale estimates based on previous Year End Charts etc. suggest that the OCC's current total for Legend is way under what it is supposed to be.

Posted by: rundmck 4th January 2017, 11:18 PM

^^ Okidokes, I thought it would be something like that. The OCC make so so many errors on such a regular basis that I'd be more inclined to go with Gezza's figure.

If that's true, then Legend should be 9th on the all-time list, ahead of Bad and just behind Brothers in Arms.

Posted by: Gezza 4th January 2017, 11:55 PM

My totals are 1.35m in the 80s, 1.25 in the 90s, almost a million in the 00s and obviously these sales. The OCC do not have any data for the period pre 1994 so they are either using record company shipment figures, certifications, or perhaps even Alan Jones' Own figures for the time I'm not sure. It's part of what makes the"all time lists" they produce largely meaningless though interesting. Add to this the ongoing yo-yoing over the sales of the 94-96 period and their lists are often contradictory sadly.

Posted by: Steve201 5th January 2017, 12:03 AM

So really none really knows exactly how many sales an album or single had overall - just since 1994 plus approximates from before?

Posted by: Gezza 5th January 2017, 12:16 AM

Yes to be honest. Though I doubt the OCC would ever admit such a thing.

Posted by: Jade 5th January 2017, 01:00 AM

Ooh I've only just spotted this thread! Looking forward to following it in full biggrin.gif

The xx's eponymous debut is easily my favourite so far wub.gif 'Angels' from their second album is my favourite song by them, but I feel like the debut is stronger on the whole. Pleased to see it still just about in the top 100.

'Red' and the Les Mis soundtrack are my other highlights of the countdown thus far.

Posted by: Samantha1989 5th January 2017, 05:41 PM

Red <3 <3

Definitely one of my favourite albums of the decade so far!

Posted by: Gezza 5th January 2017, 08:39 PM

80. GOLD- GREATEST HITS- Abba (xx-xx-xx-98-96-89-80) 649,400 (T/S 5,504,600)
79. GHOST STORIES- Coldplay (77-77-79) 657,200
78. ONLY BY THE NIGHT- Kings Of Leon (31-44-50-60-66-78-78) 663,900 (T/S 2,924,000)
77. HEAVEN- Rebecca Ferguson (60-39-48-59-67-77) 671,400
76. GET WEIRD- Little Mix (NEW) 675,800

They don’t quite shift 100,000 copies in 206 but Abba’s “Gold” still has a very good year as it lifts 9 places in 12 months- its best showing. Coldplay’s worst performing album holds its place but still hasn’t sold as many copies since 2010 as Kings Of Leon’s 2008 blockbuster “Only By The Night” which is only about 2/3 years away from its 3 millionth sale on current evidence. Both KOL and Abba have never made the top 10 this decade making their achievements all the more noteworthy. Our second new album is Little Mix’s “Get Weird” which is currently their best seller and shows that they are still in the ascendancy it would appear.

Nothing special TBH. "Magic" is melancholy as ever and "A Sky Full of Stars" is an upbeat yet kind of pretentious dance song. The rest is kind of just filler.

Posted by: Gezza 5th January 2017, 08:47 PM

75. NO MORE IDOLS- Chase & Status (43-44-49-58-64-75) 686,600
74. OUTTA THIS WORLD- JLS (18-28-37-47-56-63-74) 688,700
73. 4- Beyonce (48-45-56-61-69-73) 690,900
72. CAUSTIC LOVE- Paolo Nutini (75-68-72) 694,200
71. EVERY KINGDOM- Ben Howard (97-61-64-65-71) 711,000

Surprisingly “4” is the only Beyonce album to be on this list though “Beyonce” is not far off making it. JLS still linger on despite a mere 5,000 sales last year, both Ben Howard and Chase & Status have had difficulty replicated the sales of subsequent albums to the ones above. Paolo Nutini’s poorest seller clocks in at No 72 but then 700,000 can hardly be considered a flop in the album market of the 10’s.

Posted by: Steve201 5th January 2017, 09:25 PM

Posted by: liamk97 5th January 2017, 09:38 PM

Doesn't look like that ABBA's Gold will sell 1m within this decade (would need to sell ~115k in each of the remaining 3 years) but 900k seems do-able. Maybe it could get an extra boost if there's plans to commemorate 10 years since Mamma Mia! The Film?

Posted by: Sambuu-Yondon 6th January 2017, 04:45 AM

Ghost Stories is worst selling Coldplay album, but 650k is really huge success for most of artists of nowadays

There are a couple other highlights besides the singles (if you liked them), particularly Ink. It isn't really an album you listen to start to finish though, which for a 9 track album isn't great. Still worth checking out if you have enjoyed any of their other albums.

Posted by: Drpepper 6th January 2017, 12:56 PM

I only started with Viva....but Ghost Stories is my favourite Coldplay album. It's excellent - low key,but excellent.

Posted by: Sambuu-Yondon 6th January 2017, 02:45 PM

My Ghost Stories Rank

Always in My Head - 8.0/10
Magic - 8.5/10
Ink - 9/10 (One of Best Tracks of GS)
True Love - 7.5/10
Midnight - 10/10 (One of Best Coldplay songs, Produced by Jon Hopkins)
Another's Arms - 9.5/10
Oceans - 8/10 (Remind old Coldplay style)
A Sky Full of Stars - 9/10
O (Fly On) - 9.5/10

Guys if you haven't listened to Ghost Stories yet, should listen. It's very different Coldplay album.

70. UNAPOLOGETIC- Rihanna (58-46-55-61-70) 716,900
69. GREATEST HITS- Foo Fighters (71-66-68-70-70-66-69) 720,300 (T/S 1,036,300)
68. FALL TO GRACE- Paloma Faith (62-58-63-62-68) 721,400
67. ULTIMATE COLLECTION- Whitney Houston (81-97-76-75-67) 722,100 (T/S 1,432,700)
66. TIME FLIES 1994-2009- Oasis (38-62-67-77-72-72-66) 723,400

Another couple of albums here that haven’t made the top 10, but both Foo Fighters and Whitney Houston continue to shift healthy numbers of their back catalogue even though they are both million sellers already. Rihanna’s first album of three appears though it certainly looks like “Anti” won’t be joining this list at any point- damn those free copies, we get the second Paloma Faith album and of course an Oasis GH set that sells consistently over the years.

Posted by: cqmerqn 6th January 2017, 05:49 PM

Nice bunch there.

Hoping to get 2 Ellie Goulding albums in the top 50!

Posted by: Gezza 6th January 2017, 05:53 PM

65. IN AND OUT OF CONSCIOUSNESS- GREATEST HITS 1990-2010- Robbie Williams (14-29-36-43-51-57-65) 727,800
64. SINCE I SAW YOU LAST- Gary Barlow (76-52-60-64) 728,200
63. SWINGS BOTH WAYS- Robbie Williams (52-50-58-63) 740,600
62. JAKE BUGG- Jake Bugg (57-53-59-62) 754,800
61. CHAOS AND THE CALM- James Bay (98-61) 756,900

A whopping 37 place climb for James Bay (the third biggest in the chart) shows what a good year he’s had but its former bandmates Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams that make up the bulk of this selection, the latter’s “Take The Crown” slips off the survey and won’t be replaced by “Heavy Entertainment Show” with any speed judging by performance so far.

Posted by: 777666jason 6th January 2017, 10:33 PM

Gary slowly creeping up on the Robbie album that was released at same time its prob gonna pass before decade end

Posted by: Steve201 7th January 2017, 01:52 AM

Some great consistency for the bunch of greatest hits releases there from Witney (for obv reasons) Foo Fighters and Oasis!

Posted by: Gezza 7th January 2017, 02:37 PM

60. BACK TO BLACK- Amy Winehouse (55-60-78-80-74-60) 755,900 (T/S 3,787,900)
59. LADY KILLER- Cee-Lo Green (23-28-37-45-54-59) 765,600
58. A PERFECT CONTRADICTION- Paloma Faith (82-56-58) 766,200
57. CEREMONIALS- Florence + The Machine (54-38-44-54-55-57) 768,600
56. MY WORLD- Justin Bieber (12-22-29-40-47-52-56) 784,100

Another strong year for Any Winehouse with “Back To Black” becoming a regular in the top 100 and shifting over 100,000 copies last year, one of just 15 albums here to do it, meanwhile “A Perfect Contradiction” becomes Paloma Faith’s biggest seller finally. The first of two albums by both Florence + The Machine and Justin Bieber appear, for the former it shows the diminishing return the outfit is having from the album market, but for Bieber he’s finally bettered his debut album- but by how much?

Posted by: Gezza 7th January 2017, 02:45 PM

55. TO BE LOVED- Michael Buble (50-48-51-55) 794,400
54. SCIENCE AND FAITH- The Script (19-27-30-39-44-50-54) 799,500
53. NEVER BEEN BETTER- Olly Murs (53-53) 816,800
52. NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS- Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (27-32-38-46-48-52) 826,500
51. OLLY MURS- Olly Murs (20-24-27-32-40-46-51) 829,300

Two big names of the decade enter our rundown in this section, Michael Buble who has another 2 albums to come, and Olly Murs who has three (one of only 2 acts to have 4 albums in total here). Murs current album could well become his lowest seller overall but the late appearance of his 2014 set “Never Been Better” warns against predicting that too soon. Noel Gallagher however proved more popular than his old band for now at any rate!

Posted by: Gezza 8th January 2017, 06:09 PM

50. LIGHTS- Ellie Goulding (24-25-35-41-42-47-50) 830,300
49. DISC-OVERY- Tinie Tempah (29-21-26-33-39-45-49) 836,700
48. LIONESS: HIDDEN TREASURES- Amy Winehouse (31-25-31-37-43-48) 857,600
47. NOTHING BUT THE BEAT- David Guetta (90-46-36-41-44-47) 859,000
46. BAD BLOOD- Bastille (79-49-49-46) 863,000

A rather stagnant selection here with only Bastille improving year on year helped no doubt by the release of “Wild World” last year. Ellie Goulding won’t be listing here with “Delirium” but debut set “Lights” has been surpassed by her later album, meanwhile Tinie Tempah and David Guetta seem to have lost some commercial clout since their peak.

Posted by: Gezza 8th January 2017, 06:16 PM

45. THE TRUTH ABOUT LOVE- P!nk (63-34-36-42-45) 873,400
44. ELEMENT OF FREEDOM- Alicia Keys (7-17-24-28-33-41-44) 881,200 (T/S 1,019,700)
43. MIDNIGHT MEMORIES- One Direction (45-34-38-43) 896,700
42. 18 MONTHS- Calvin Harris (89-42-38-40-42) 908,600
41. COME AROUND SUNDOWN- Kings Of Leon (11-15-21-25-30-35-41) 920,700

Moving over the 900,000 mark now which One Direction’s second album on the list is poised to cross at some point in 2017. Already there are Calvin Harris and Kings Of Leon though of course for KOL it sold over 2 million less than “Only By The Night”.

38. RECOVERY- Eminem (9-16-22-26-32-34-38) 961,500
37. AM- Arctic Monkeys (73-43-39-37) 964,100
36. UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX- Bruno Mars (30-29-32-36) 994,200

Second albums on the list by Pink and Eminem denote their biggest sellers of the decade, but it’s Jess Glynne’s moment of glory as her rise of 47 places is the biggest climb on the entire list! Being home to 5 chart toppers in its deluxe version clearly helped. Meanwhile Arctic Monkeys continue to sell well and Bruno Mars should have his second million selling album during 2017.

Posted by: Gezza 9th January 2017, 05:45 PM

35. BORN THIS WAY- Lady Gaga (18-18-22-25-28-35) 1,009,700
34. TAKE ME HOME- One Direction (42-24-28-30-34) 1,018,100
33. A HEAD FULL OF DREAMS- Coldplay (NEW) 1,019,600
32. SUNNY SIDE UP- Paolo Nutini (6-14-20-23-24-27-32) 1,033,000 (T/S 1,843,500)
31. TALK THAT TALK- Rihanna (26-17-20-23-26-31) 1,039,300

So 35 albums are over the million mark so far this decade, creeping over are One Direction and Lady Gaga, but Coldplay’s “A Head Full Of Dreams” is our highest new album. It returns them to the million sellers club after the “disappointment” of “Ghost Stories” and made No 1 in early 2016 after it looked like becoming their first studio set to fail to make the top when it debuted at No 2 behind Adele in December 2015. Second of three albums on the list by Rihanna but it’s fading.

Love this thread! Thanks for doing this.

Great to see Gaga having two albums in the top 40 dance.gif

Yes, thanks Gezza. I'm far more interested in album sales over the years than singles sales.

Pink, Jess Glynne, Arctic Monkeys and Bruno Mars all in one update, I own all of those. Hopefully they'll all push pass a million eventually.

Just shows how beneficial to an artist it is to have greatest hits collections still. Fantastic sellers over the years.

It's been in the top 200 since then so I've had a chance to adjust the figure appropriately.

Too slow to get the refunded 600 copies joke in there

The greatest hits thing I think pink is most recent released to sell consistent most haven't faired so well

It is cool though that if the artist is big enough they can consistently sell trickles

Only just the most recent. Bon Jovi released one two weeks earlier and they're still to come on the list.

Wonderful to see Gary Barlow selling almost 730,000 sales of Since I Saw You Last and almost 200,000 ahead of the most recent album by Take That.

The Killers' GH is even more recent but was floating around the top 100 almost 2 years after release.

30. GREATEST HITS- Bon Jovi (16-30-31-29-31-31-30) 1,047,500
29. BORN TO DIE- Lana Del Rey (33-27-27-29-29) 1,064,700
28. 1989- Taylor Swift (33-28) 1,092,600
27. IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW- Olly Murs (34-19-18-21-24-27) 1,106,400
26. IF I CAN DREAM- Elvis Presley (37-26) 1,106,900

Taking 5 years to do it Bon Jovi’s “Greatest Hits” becomes their first million seller in over 20 years, it’s also in the top 10 in this list in terms of weeks spent in the charts- consistency. Making gains in a much smaller timeframe are Elvis Presley and Taylor Swift who are top 30 on less than half that time, and it’s album No 3 for Olly Murs.

Posted by: Gezza 10th January 2017, 06:45 PM

25. PURPOSE- Justin Bieber (70-25) 1,123,000
24. BABEL- Mumford & Sons (47-21-22-25-24) 1,131,100
23. UP ALL NIGHT- One Direction (41-23-19-20-23-23) 1,132,900
22. HALCYON- Ellie Goulding (51-26-22-22) 1,172,300
21. WANTED ON VOYAGE- George Ezra (57-21-21) 1,182,900

Frustratingly it looks like George Ezra has run out of sales just as it was about to enter the top 20 of the decade! We’ll have to wait and see if the same happens to Justin Bieber whose “Purpose” drives up the chart 45 places (two less than Glynne) but still needs another 100,000 to make the top 20 but his turnaround remains remarkable. Elsewhere the best sellers for Ellie Goulding and One Direction appear but the first of two Mumford & Sons albums to be here rebounds taking advantage of poor year’s for Olly Murs.

Bruno, Arctic Monkeys and Jess definitely will, the latter two absolutely later this year. Only 5,800 for Bruno (that's only 112 copies a week), so he'll probably get there soon too actually.

20. LUNGS- Florence & The Machine (8-11-16-17-19-20-20) 1,224,800 (T/S 1,740,600)
19. WHO YOU ARE- Jessie J (19-14-14-16-18-19) 1,279,900
18. TEENAGE DREAM- Katy Perry (15-12-15-16-18-19-18) 1,283,900
17. RIGHT PLACE RIGHT TIME- Olly Murs (48-15-15-17-17) 1,350,700
16. DEFAMATION OF STRICKLAND BANKS- Plan B (5-8-12-13-14-16-16) 1,373,600

One of the consequences of the poor year for album sales is that the top 20 remains rather stale. These 5 have all been on this survey for at least 5 years and their campaigns are well and truly over, Olly Murs and Florence + The Machine doing the best in 2016, and of course Katy Perry slips past Jessie J.

Posted by: Gezza 11th January 2017, 05:50 PM

15. MYLO XYLOTO- Coldplay (13-11-11-12-15-15) 1,512,900
14. SIGH NO MORE- Mumford & Sons (10-10-13-12-13-14-14) 1,533,300 (T/S 1,685,300)
13. THE FAME/ MONSTER- Lady Gaga (3-5-9-10-11-13-13) 1,551,000 (T/S 2,940,000)
12. DOO WOPS AND HOOLIGANS- Bruno Mars (9-8-9-9-12-12) 1,719,200
11. 19- ADELE (xx-6-6-8-10-11-11) 1,773,600 (T/S 2,350,300)

Pretty much the same here with no movement at all though somewhat predictably Adele the best out of them in 2016. Even taking into consideration her total sales of “19” it’s still her poorest seller- incredible, and it’s also in the top 10 in terms of wks in the top 10 this decade by albums featured here. The release of “Joanne” did little to push her back catalogue and Lady Gaga can only dream of those kind of numbers occurring again, meanwhile Coldplay, Bruno Mars, and Mumford & Sons are all here with their decade bests.

Posted by: rundmck 12th January 2017, 12:19 PM

Adele's 19 should be about 30k (or one years sales) away from a place in the top 60 of all time then.
The only risk to her being kept out that I can see is Ed's ÷

19 has the luxury of streaming sales though. It will need many more pure sales to overtake Automatic for the People.

Kind of incredible and yet sobering to see so many old albums remain standing here, I mean, surely no one would have called Plan B to be in the top 20 of the decade even though he started at #5 and yet he's probably locked for top 30 if not staying in the bracket he is for decade-end.

I can't believe we live in a world where Plan B outsells Katy Perry, Jessie J and Olly Murs.

10. CRAZY LOVE- MICHAEL BUBLE (2-4-5-6-7-10-10) 1,915,300 (T/S 3,112,700)

Ah the Buble, an album selling machine which all really shifted in gear with this 2009 album which sold 1.1 million in 11 weeks, funny to think how it was initially held off the top by albums by Alexandra Burke and Cheryl Cole. It’s ticking along nicely at roughly 20k a year meaning it may make 2 million sales in this decade alone depending on Buble’s profile.

Posted by: Gezza 12th January 2017, 08:49 PM

09. LOUD- RIHANNA (4-3-3-5-5-9-9) 1,978,000

Debuting at No 2 behind Take That it took “Loud” seven weeks to top the charts but once it got into its stride the album spent its first 24 weeks in the top 10. By the end of December 2010 Rihanna had three singles in the top 10, quite an achievement, whilst this was flying off the shelf, it should reach 2 million before the decade end. She did have the help of David Guetta, Drake, Ne-Yo, Timbaland, and Nicki Minaj to help on the album, pretty much a who’s who of pop in 2010.

Posted by: Gezza 12th January 2017, 08:53 PM

08. + - ED SHEERAN (20-7-7-6-8-8) 2,123,800

Trailing in in 3rd place in the 2012 listings to the two Adele’s, Ed Sheeran’s debut album proper saw him catapulted into the “A List”ers of pop stars, no album on this list or indeed this decade has spent more weeks in the top 100 (249) than “+” and it’s also just one of five albums to spend a whole 52 wks in the top 10 (consecutive or otherwise)- the others are all to come!

Posted by: raphaelalm 12th January 2017, 09:14 PM

excited to see top 5

Posted by: JCM20 12th January 2017, 09:57 PM

Loud's sold almost 30,000 since the release of Anti, despite last entering the top 100 in June 2013. Forget "by the end of the decade", hitting 2 million could happen by this time next year!

Posted by: Gezza 13th January 2017, 06:01 PM

07. IN THE LONELY HOUR- SAM SMITH (17-7-7) 2,274,900

Transforming Smith into an international superstar his debut album spent 71 of its first 72 weeks in the top 10 producing 7 top 10 singles by the end and 3 chart toppers (in its deluxe version). Along the way it garnered him BRITS and Grammy’s and put him in line to do the Bond theme!

Posted by: Gezza 13th January 2017, 06:05 PM

06. OUR VERSION OF EVENTS- EMELI SANDE (10-3-4-6-6) 2,323,700

Time now for the best seller of 2012 and almost 2013 until it was overtaken in the dying days by One Direction. Can anyone forget the near saturation of Sande back in those days? We finally got the follow up last month so we’ll have to see if it can do anywhere near this but the fact that it remains in the record books as the first debut album to spend its first 66 weeks in the top 10 illustrates how popular she was.

Posted by: vibe 14th January 2017, 11:06 AM

Id be interested to know how many of the albums in the top 10 were reeeleased.

Posted by: Gezza 14th January 2017, 12:19 PM

05. PROGRESS- TAKE THAT (1-2-2-2-2-4-5) 2,382,800

Considerable press attention focused on Robbie’s return to the Take That fold back in 2010 and sure enough “Progress” sold a mighty 518k in its first week (still the 3rd highest ever 7 day sale) and 1.8 million in its first 7 weeks. Sales cooled quickly however though a deluxe version issued in June 2011 saw the set return to the top spot, it marks the final appearance for both Robbie and Jason in the group- perhaps forever?

Posted by: Gezza 14th January 2017, 12:22 PM

04. CHRISTMAS- MICHAEL BUBLE (7-4-4-3-5-4) 2,577,000

Well isn’t this just turning into the “All I Want For Christmas Is You” of the album charts? When it charts you just know that the big day is almost here, of all the albums on this list this was the 9th highest of 2016 proving that it’s when you chart that counts. It charted higher in 2016 than in any year since 2012 but with only 52 weeks charted it’s the shortest lived album in the top 10.

Posted by: Gezza 15th January 2017, 02:08 PM

03. x- ED SHEERAN (8-2-3) 2,898,400

And so what happened to Emeli Sande in 2012/13 happened to Sheeran in 14/15, the clear winner in sales terms in the first year and on course to become the best seller again in the second year until beaten at the last minute. His second album “x” moved 8-2 in the 2015 listings but it falls back this year unable to cope with the Adele onslaught, that move despite selling almost a quarter of a million in 2016 with no new single to assist- not bad going, with both his albums placing in the top 10 of the decade can he add a third with his new album?

Posted by: Gezza 15th January 2017, 02:10 PM

02. 25- ADELE (3-2) 3,249,100

Naturally the top 2 belong to Adele, let’s have a quick recap of the feats of the album include the largest opening weekly sale of 800,000 which was followed by 4 weeks with over 350k registering 5 of the 21 biggest weekly sales of all time and becoming the fastest album to reach first the million mark (10 days) then the 2 million mark (29 days) and finally the 3 million mark (220 days). The final landmark coincided with her star turn at Glastonbury which saw the album return to No 1 and yet it’s still 1.7 million away from making it to the top here!

Posted by: Gezza 15th January 2017, 02:13 PM

01. 21- ADELE (1-1-1-1-1) 4,999,100

Still easily clear and looking untouchable, “21” is of course the best selling album of the decade so far and the fourth biggest album of all time selling its five millionth copy this month. It spent its first 72 weeks in the top 10 including 23 weeks at No 1 even stealing a cheeky week in the top 10 last year after her Glastonbury stint. It launched her as an international superstar and sold 3.8 million in its first year on the charts becoming the best selling album in the UK for 2011 and then the second biggest seller of 2012- could anything brake her top 2 stranglehold by 2020?

The top 4 next year could very well consist of just Ed Sheeran and Adele albums, as ÷ will obviously sell amazingly.

Posted by: Bradders 15th January 2017, 05:00 PM

Is this Adele's 6th year at the top?

All the same, congrats for compiling this list! It must be so time consuming for you!

I think it's unlikely that Ed will sell the 2.7m he needs this year to reach the top 4, but it seems certain that 50% of the top 12 will be Adele and Ed albums.

I can't imagine anything will be even near competing with Adele by the end of the decade, it would have to be something truly earth shattering

Posted by: King Rollo 15th January 2017, 07:06 PM

I don't own any of those 100 albums. I have several that reached no.1 but they didn't have the sales longevity to get into that top 100.

Posted by: cqmerqn 15th January 2017, 07:10 PM

I only own 6 albums of the top 100!

Hopefully we get a top 200 at end of decade

Looking at the previous decade it is amazing to see how much album sales have falle but with the right artist the can still be massive

It's weird to see that only a decade ago single sales were fairly low but albums were massive yet now they are reversed

Kind of incredible and yet sobering to see so many old albums remain standing here, I mean, surely no one would have called Plan B to be in the top 20 of the decade even though he started at #5 and yet he's probably locked for top 30 if not staying in the bracket he is for decade-end.

I was just gonna exclaim at how huge his sales are lol - such a great album, pity he has disappeared!

Great countdown as always Gezza!

From a very recent 'Music Week'.

"The 16-times platinum album, which is currently the fourth biggest selling British album of all time, achieved the feat six years after its release. The only British albums to have shifted more copies are The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (5.1 millions sales), ABBA’s Gold compilation (5.2m) and Queen’s Greatest Hits (6.1m)".

What 'Music Week' said about ABBA Gold was out of Date. In July 2016 The OCC said that ABBA Gold
was 'almost' on 5,300,000 UK Sales. It went on to sell at least 50,000 to 60,000 more UK copies by
the final Sales Chart of 2016 - W/E 5th January 2017. So, even on The OCC's much lower Total than
Gezza's, (5,504,000), ABBA Gold is now on about 5,320,000 to 5,350,000 UK Sales.
