Robbie Williams cut an animated figure as he watched his beloved Port Vale for the first time in his new role. The global pop star, who enjoyed huge hits such as 'Angels' and 'Let Me Entertain You, was named as Vale's new club president this week. As a result, he was in attendance at Vale Park to soak up their League One clash with Portsmouth, a match that they went on to lose 1-0 thanks to a late Colby Bishop effort.

The match was marred by a Port Vale supporter storming the pitch and chasing the referee, but that didn't stop Williams from enjoying himself in his private box as he watched on keenly, while appearing to chant and sing along with the home supporters in attendance. The 49-year-old is far from a stuffy, corporate head and so fans can probably expect similar animated displays at matches that he attends in future.

After all, he is the man who referred to himself as 'El Presidente' in his unveiling interview. Speaking to Port Vale's media channels, he said: "My life is bizarre and wonderful and has taken many turns and twists and to find myself from the Railway Paddock to be 'El Presidente' is pretty special. "It feels as though I need to be doing more in and around this place." Williams added: "Football clubs are run by people with certain characters.

"The reason why I hadn't come back up to Port Vale in the longest time, was I never met the characters that ran the place. The club hadn't felt loving, homely or welcoming. "Then Carol and her family came in, revitalised, changed the place and I noticed this happening from afar and thought that's incredibly interesting.

"And it sort of got me to reinvest, first interest and then - meeting the family and coming and seeing what was going on - investing my heart back into the club.
"Let the good times roll," he added.

Port Vale undoubtedly need to 'Feel' victory once again with defeat to Portsmouth leaving them in 20th spot in League One.

Port Vale owner: 'Signing Robbie Williams is not about the money!'

Port Vale owner Carol Shanahan has revealed her close friendship with Robbie Williams after asking him to become club president. Robbie, who grew up in Burslem and Tunstall, took up the new role at his boyhood club on Friday (January 26). Speaking to StokeonTrentLive, businesswoman Carol, who purchased Port Vale in 2019 with husband Kevin, revealed she asked the global megastar to be president 'some time ago' before he was officially presented at the club/
"He was very pleased and grateful," Carol added. "Ages ago, when I’d seen him, I asked him if he would be president, and I didn’t know how he would react; but he was really emotional."

The pair became acquainted when Robbie's manager contacted Carol in November 2019, six months after she bought the club.
Robbie asked if he could put on his homecoming concert at Vale Park, with Carol saying 'it was important' to the singer, who grew up watching Vale from the Railway Paddock. The gig went ahead in June 2022, with Carol saying: "I still think it’s the best concert he has ever done, because it was the one concert that was purely about him. He did everything for it, and it was amazing. Carol said the pair became friends through that experience, with Robbie texting Carol after matches he'd been able to watch. "We got to know each other and then he’s been to a few matches, and there’s a few little projects that we’ve talked about.

"Nothing has fallen quite right yet, just ways to work together," said Carol, who spoke to the board about appointing Robbie alongside Vale legend John Rudge. "He's an amazing president," Carol said of Rudge. "He comes to all matches, home and away with us, and we’ve become good friends with him and his wife, Del.

"We just wanted that depth to Port Vale. Sometimes there’s this joke about ‘little old Port Vale’ — but we’re not ‘little old’. We’re talked about the world over, and we want to grow that. I think that Robbie is such a good ambassador for us, and we wanted to recognise that.

"We wanted to do it officially with him there [at Vale Park], but we had to wait for the end of the tour, which has only recently finished, and for him to be in the country, because he travels the world a lot, and so this match was picked as the one he could do."

Carol said Robbie was already 'integral' to the club before being made president, referencing The Robbie Williams Lounge at the stadium, opened to coincide with the homecoming gig. She said: "We also use it as the works canteen, and at half-past twelve, the whole of Port Vale — all the staff — we all go upstairs and we eat together in Robbie’s, which is lovely, because it brings us together as a community everyday.

"The players eat in the players' lounge because they have to have their set food, but the academy lads eat with us. So I said to him, we kind of pay homage to him everyday. He’s part of us every day, because every day we have lunch together in Robbie’s." Carol added: "People will say to me about Port Vale, wherever I go, ‘Oh yeah, that’s Robbie Williams, isn’t it?’"

Robbie, who joked on Friday that he wishes to be addressed as 'El Presidente' from here on out, was present at Vale's match game against Portsmouth Saturday (January 27), wearing a Vale-branded jacket. "He’s lovely," said Carol. "And, Friday and yesterday, I’d never seen him more relaxed."

She added Robbie gave a speech in the Valiant Suite after the game. She said: "He just said to everyone how proud he was, and how he’d come from the Railway Paddock, and when he used to sit in the Railway he could never have imagined becoming president of the club. "He sees it as part of his journey. He was great, and he had time for everybody. He’s a lovely, lovely man."

As for Robbie's future, Carol said: "He is going to be doing more. We were talking about that on Friday. "I don’t want it to be about money, and I did say to him, ‘You know this announcement is going to be out, and within five minutes people will be saying you should buy us a striker.’ It was actually two minutes after we put it on social media. "And I don’t want it to be about that, I want it to be about what else he does for the club. He gives us a more global platform.

"A lot of football is about contacts, and whether it's your contacts within football or anywhere else, that’s what you need, and he’s certainly got those in abundance. He just wants to help, we want him to help and we want to get it right."

I love his connection to his football team -a suite in his honour and now the President of the club - it can only be a win win for both sides.

Also loving the time he was giving to young fans asking him questions. He's got a lovely heart heart.gif

This has to be very important to him , I hope people do not down go the line of making it about money & have unfair expectations. Robbie seems to have a really good relationship with the current owners .
