Pop critic and intellect Popjustice's countdown is here from last week: http://www.popjustice.com/articles/the-top...of-2015/139932/
I thought I'd make a topic to discuss. A very good list in my opinion and I agree with the controversial choices to have Shine above King, Your Type above RAWN and LMLY higher than Black Magic. Though I love all these songs. I just don't really agree with #1, possibly one of my least favourite 1989 singles. |

I actually fully agree and understand the #1. It's not even about it being a "favourite" of the singles, I have always seen 'Style' as a very important song. It seems to have really kick-started (or better still, helped accelerate) a new wave of pop music with a much darker tone and that dark/new-synth sound that we're now seeing in so many other songs is so "in" right now and I see 'Style' as one of the best examples of that sound and the one that helped bring it in the mainstream. It shows throughout 'EMOTION' so I owe a lot of appreciation and respect to it for making that sound popular. Whether you enjoy it or not or see it as a favourite, it's such a well crafted and executed pop song.
Great to see Carly getting recognition here too of course - two songs in the top 5 |

I love Style but I'd not put it at #1, it's certainly not my favourite of the 1989 singles! It is more ambitious and clever than most if not all the others though I'd argue, I agree!

OMFG. Their comment on 'Love Me Badder'!
QUOTE One of various songs from 2015 that it would be nice to have heard Rihanna singing. Or Little Mix. Imagine Little Mix doing this! Jesus wept. FUCK YES!

I feel like everything explained here had already been done with Blank Space, yet with better execution. Obviously it's just a matter of taste, so many people love Style, I just find its melody a little dull in comparison to lots of her other singles, regardless of the type of song it is. |

To me Style is the unremarkable single from 1989! Nor would I agree that it's started a 'popular' trend, I don't think any of those new-wave songs have actually been successful? Knew it'd finish higher than I'd want but the list overall is very good

Yeh I would say 'Style' helped kick off a new trend, seen especially in songs like 'Kiss Me'. Plus it's a lot better musically than than 'Bad Blood' and 'Wildest Dreams'.

I feel like everything explained here had already been done with Blank Space, yet with better execution. Obviously it's just a matter of taste, so many people love Style, I just find its melody a little dull in comparison to lots of her other singles, regardless of the type of song it is. I would disagree completely - listening to 'Blank Space' compared to 'Style' and it's so much more pedestrian musically. That is not taking anything away from 'Blank Space' it's incredible and I probably enjoy it more than 'Style' but the instrumentation on 'Style' is so much richer than that of 'Blank Space'. To me Style is the unremarkable single from 1989! Nor would I agree that it's started a 'popular' trend, I don't think any of those new-wave songs have actually been successful? Knew it'd finish higher than I'd want but the list overall is very good I meant popular in that it is being done by a lot of artists not that the songs are selling a lot - this list has nothing to do with "success". By "in the mainstream", I mean big artists are using the sound in their music and it's not an underground style now. I am majorly biased as it's my favourite brand of pop music around, so obvious i'd agree with the list (and the two Carly songs in the top 5). Calling it "unremarkable" though, how!? It's totally remarkable to these ears and though it might be the least "catchy" of the songs it's certainly the most intricately produced for me and the most distinct/well-thought out. I'd say it's a timeless song already and excuse the pun but I can't see it going out of style, while some of the other songs on the album might be seen as cheesy or has-been in a few years time. |

What I don't understand is how did Black Magic win their annual £20 prize thingy for best song. And then only come in at number 18?

Great to see I'm A Ruin so high up.
And that Shine is above King, as I prefer Shine. Taylor is over-rated. Glad the whole list isn't swimming in Justin Bieber |
