No sign of The Veronicas, Jessica Mauboy or Vanessa Amorosi on this week's chart? Ouch.

The Veronicas are doing okay at #78 atm, Australian tracks often struggle to get good peaks because their sales/airplay/streaming peaks never line up properly (playlists are also often too busy fulfilling international status quo to bother; the first Australian track on Hot Hits Australia is 17th on the list). Can't speak as well for the others though.

There's a distinct lack of competition this week, but I suspect his reign may be interrupted by the new Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber song. Lil Nas X is still getting more streams but the sales difference might be the key. If that's not incredibly white enough for you, then look no further than this week's top 10 debuts. Shawn Mendes has a huge start out the gate with "If I Can't Have You", the highest debut he's ever had on the singles chart and in fact it's already his equal highest charter. "Stitches", "Treat You Better" and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" all peaked at #4, so it will be interesting to see if this can get higher in the future. Probably not getting higher in the future is Logic's new song, though it does notably become his 2nd top 10 hit. Not deterred by two new entries, "Sunflower" only drops to #8 in its record extending 28th week in the top 10. It might leave the top 10 next week as Avicii & Lewis Capaldi are making a lot of headway in streaming. Because we're stuck with a shitty system that doesn't care about local content, we've only had two fluke 1 week top 10 hits from Australian artists this year, therefore it feels like an achievement that Hilltop Hoods have scored a second top 20 hit from their latest album. Also a noteworthy achievement is that Stormzy has scored a top 50 hit, adding to the very small handful of UK rappers I can think of that have done so, including Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, The Streets, Lady Sovereign and...Big Shaq. Lizzo also does the same because ARIA is being more competent than Billboard somehow. After last week's chaos, this week is relatively low key. P!nk safely holds #1 for a second week. I suspect she will again unless Lee Kernaghan is pulling some crazy numbers. While Billie Eilish is getting about 70% of her weekly sales from streams, The Seekers are getting about 98% of theirs from physical album sales, and they climb to #3 this week, possibly facing a big decline after Mother's Day. While not necessarily my top choice for a new album from an artist who last released in 2013, Vampire Weekend have returned with their 4th album, and it's a slight decline from their 3rd album's #7 peak, debuting at #8. Their best chart performance was their 2nd album debuting at #2. |

G'won Stormzy get dat international $ma$h hit!!
Which also makes me think, Australia seemingly have had about the same amount of British rap songs as Australian rap songs in the chart, which is very low - Aussie seems to care very little for its homegrown rap in general aside from Hilltop Hoods. |

Which also makes me think, Australia seemingly have had about the same amount of British rap songs as Australian rap songs in the chart, which is very low - Aussie seems to care very little for its homegrown rap in general aside from Hilltop Hoods. I feel like there is a healthy audience, but it's hard to go far because a lot of hip hop heads will instinctively source from the US, and a lot of the people who want to support Australian music will draw the line at that rap stuff. Generally when it can break through, it's very safe and draws from a limited reference pool of about 4 artists (I was gonna keep going with the links bit until I realised I would just be using the same artists over and over again). It's hard too because the more diverse and interesting artists don't even get a proper leg up of acclaim because there's no avenue of credibility to do so like there is in the UK. The ARIA Awards have nominated two hip hop albums for Album Of The Year ever (360 & Illy both at peak pop-rap) but both in years where they inevitably got cleaned up by the obvious award bait (Gotye, Gang Of Youths). No idea what they're after but I think Australian critical faculties are too stuck in their rockist past to see a rapper as any sort of esteemed auteur. you reckon #10 is gonna be the peak for Someone You Loved or could the song keep climbing? It definitely hasn't peaked yet I think. Today's Top Hits gave it a massive international boost a few days ago that's rippling over to Australia so it's still gaining consistently in streams. There's heaps of room to grow on radio (it's only up to #12 there) and his album out next week will probably help too. Not sure if it'll go top 5 but definitely will be back in the top 10. In all seriousness though, we have a new #1 this week courtesy of Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber. For both of them, it's their 5th #1 hit. If that feels like a small tally for Ed, remember that he has 5 #2 hits as well, 4 of them having been blocked by other Ed Sheeran songs in 2017. With Lil Nas X still holding #1 on the Streaming Chart, it looks like it was a close battle won over by those early digital sales, because "Old Town Road" sits at #2, #10 & #25 on this week's Digital Tracks chart. Lil Nas X is firmly back in the lead on both formats though so it'll very likely return to #1 next week. Lewis Capaldi climbs back into the top 10 with a new peak of #7, and despite what I may have said recently, I do now think he can sneak into the top 5 next week. "Sunflower" drops to #10 but extends its top 10 run record to 29 weeks. It's a toss up whether or not it can make it to 30 weeks, it looks like overtaking "ME!" but might fall behind "Talk" or "Here With Me". In uplifting news, we have now matched last year's tally of Australian artists newly scoring a top 50 hit this year, as Tones And I's debut single climbs to #40 and makes her the 3rd artist to do so. Incidentally her 2nd single was released last week but didn't quite make the chart yet, because Australian playlists only put international megastars on their priority list. Speaking of which, in spite of this, FISHER has scored a 2nd top 50 hit this week, just a few places shy of "Losing It"'s peak. But don't worry, Hot Hits Australia definitely supports Australian music, because KIAN's "Waiting" has been on the playlist for 9 months running now. P!nk holds #1 for a 3rd week running. It's a big week of new releases but they may well still end up behind her. Take your pick between Conrad Sewell, The National, Tyler, The Creator, Lewis Capaldi & Rammstein because I have no idea how this is all going to pile together. This week was a bit more quiet as the only top 10 debut came from Lee Kernaghan who now has 10 top 10 albums to his name. After two top 10 albums last year, Logic retreats to a more modest #12, and Mac Demarco lands in the #21-#25 section for the 3rd time in a row with his new album. |

Sunflower really needs to GTFO now, ridiculous that it's still top 10. Good to see that Ed may only have 1 week at #1 here I guess.
What's Luke Combs doing as high as #51 too? :\ |

Australia once again proves that democracy doesn't work, but enough about the chart, let's talk about the weekend's federal election. In all seriousness though, we have a new #1 this week courtesy of Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber. Very good Also how the hell is Sunflower still top ten there?! And good options for potential new number one albums next week, not one I dislike in there so as long as it's not P!nk for a fourth week it's great! I think it's fairly unlikely but it would be great to see Rammstein do it. |

What's Luke Combs doing as high as #51 too? :\ I'm not entirely sure why except possibly that the country music TV station must have a big audience, but his album has been in the top 50 since June last year so it's a lot of gradual fanbase building in lead up to his first new standalone single in ages. He actually got to #1 on iTunes and would probably be in the top 50 if not for a badly timed release. |

Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber continue to show strong figures but no forward momentum is really in sight for them. The whole top 3 is actually way ahead of the pack, even with #4 & #5 on steady combinations of sales & streams. In fact, if you combine all versions of "Old Town Road", the official, digital & streaming top 5 charts are almost exactly the same this week, the only difference is that Lewis is outselling Shawn. "Sunflower" racks up a 30th week in the top 10, but the margins remain slim and it could fall prey to the new Ed Sheeran song which is likely to debut in the top 10 (around #6 imo). There are also surprise threats from Marshmello who is seeing a second wind, and surprisingly the week's highest debut from Tyler, The Creator. In a surprising show of taste (not the Tyga kind of course), Tyler's entire album almost debuted this week, only the final two tracks just missed out by <10 positions. He'd previously only charted with "Who Dat Boy", but that along with "911 / Mr. Lonely" and "See You Again" from his last album have all been certified gold. The highest debut is of course "EARFQUAKE" at #11 which I believe is the first ever chart appearance for Playboi Carti. It severely lacks sales but its growing streams on Spotify this week might be able to sneak it into the top 10 next week, I can only hope. Halsey is not far behind with "Nightmare" at #13 which does have sales on its side but streaming is already stalling so I'm not sure it can get much higher yet. To a lesser extent, DJ Khaled has also impacted the chart with 4 new entries, I don't think he's ever had a single debut on album release before, but this week he's had 4. In just ARIA things news, only "Celebrate" has its feature artists credited, apologies to SZA, Post Malone, Travis Scott, Cardi B & 21 Savage. In a hefty week of new releases, the winner is...Conrad. Possibly helped by the fact that it was selling on iTunes for $9.99, possibly helped by the streaming numbers provided by the inclusion of his 4 year old #1 single "Start Again", possibly helped by TV appearances and whatnot. Though he's the complete antithesis of what I'm interested in with Australian music, it's commendable nonetheless. With P!nk dropping down to #4, maybe she was being helped significantly by Mother's Day after all. Also debuting is of course Tyler, The Creator, who scores a 2nd top 10 album but 5 places higher than "Flower Boy" (which re-enters the top 100 this week) did at #8. Rammstein also see new chart heights with their first new album in 10 years. They'd made the top 10 3 times before, but always just scraping it, so their highest before was oddly enough, the tour album they did alongside Korn and others in 1999 which got to #8. Their self-titled new album enters at #5. On the decline however is The National, whose last 2 albums peaked at #2 (due to the unwise decisions to release on the same week as Daft Punk and...Anthony Callea), but they may be aging out of their formerly very strong triple j audience as they can only manage a #6 debut. DJ Khaled is a bit more consistent, with 2016's "Major Key" debuting at #6 and 2017's "Grateful" at #7. He sticks in this general region with "Father Of Asahd" at #7. Finishing up the top 10 debuts is Lewis Capaldi, whose longevity is yet to be clear as he only has 1 charting song thus far, but maybe with how many singles he's got going around, he'll get some good streaming numbers. Alex Lahey & Carly Rae Jepsen also debut lower down which is cool, though perhaps underwhelming from past performance. There's a general lack of noteworthy studio albums out this week, but we are ready for another round of the Soundtrack menace, courtesy of Elton John, Will Smith & surrounding artists. |

I'm pretty confident it'll retain it again next week which will tie the #1 set by non-credited Billy Ray Cyrus in 1992 with "Achy Breaky Heart". While most of the top 10 lightly shuffles around, I get to lavish in the fact I made a correct prediction as Ed Sheeran's "Cross Me" enters at #6. This is the first time in the chart for PnB Rock, but Chance The Rapper has turned up on a top 10 hit for 4 years in a row now. Less familiar to the top 10 is Tyler, The Creator, who thanks to the wonders of delayed streaming reactions, despite all but 2 of his tracks dropping out of the top 100 this week, sees an improvement for "EARFQUAKE" into the top 10. Perhaps the real wild outcome here is that I get to say that Tyler, The Creator is responsible for ending the longest top 10 run in the history of the Australian charts, as "Sunflower" drops to #11 this week. The longest run at the moment in the top 10 is "Sucker"'s 13 weeks so it's pretty safely holding this record for a good while. Just in time to replace The Chainsmokers for Australian quotas, is an actual 5 Seconds Of Summer entry with "Easier" already outpeaking "Who Do You Love" at #12. Young Thug also scores a debut in the top 20, his first as a lead artist following his eclectic set of previous collaborators on ARIA Charting singles: Camila Cabello, Calvin Harris & Jamie xx. Helped again by immense Spotify pushing is OneRepublic's first top 50 hit in 3 years, "Rescue Me", while Joyner Lucas has now scored top 50 hits alongside both "Homicide" collaborators. For the third time this decade we have a charting entry which is a collaboration between two artists who begin with the letter Z. Billie Eilish Stephen Bradburys her way to a 4th week at #1 on the album chart. I have to deal with another round of soundtracks as the only two high entries this week are the Aladdin & Rocketman soundtracks. Elton John's GH set "Diamonds" is probably being helped by not suffering the same streaming fate as Queen's sets and scores a new top 10 peak at #8. Despite what the format might entail, the Vinyl Albums chart is looking particularly youthful in its top 3. Alongside Billie Eilish are two young Australian bands, Amyl and the Sniffers with their self-titled debut, and Middle Kids with an EP. In classic ARIA confusion, YG debuts at #25 with his album, while "Go Loko" is curiously absent from tracking, maybe next week they'll fix it. |

It continues to severely lack competition so prepare for that to be 8 weeks next week. Katy Perry interrupts what continues to be a remarkably stagnant top 10 as "Never Really Over" debuts at #7, bringing her back to the top 10 for the first time since "Chained To The Rhythm" & "Feels" in 2017. In a close duel for those final few spots, "Sunflower" manages to return for a 31st non-consecutive week in the top 10, 6 ahead of the next longest runner. With the Jonas Brothers releasing a new album, it looks unlikely for it to stick around again next week. Belatedly YG debuts with "Go Loko" which gives him his first ever top 50 hit, having only previously charted in 2013 with "My Ni**a". 2 years of Spotify trying their hardest to make Ruel a thing nets him his first top 50 single, which makes him the 4th Australian artist to do so for the first time in 2019, following Ocean Alley, FISHER & Tones And I. By comparison only 3 Australian artists did so in 2018. Elton John scores two entries this week courtesy of the "Rocketman" biopic. Both songs originally charted together and peaked at #13 in the early 1970s, ARIA tend to be inconsistent in regards to which pre-ARIA hits they count as re-entries. On the album chart, Jimmy Barnes makes history by scoring his 12th solo #1 album. This makes him the solo artist with the most #1 albums ever, having previously been tied with Madonna (who theoretically could tie him again with her new album). Overall only The Beatles have scored more #1 albums (14). Causing further confusion as to whether anyone under the age of 40 is buying albums lately, Susan Boyle also makes a return to the chart at #5, an improvement on several of her recent peaks, and also the first time she's released an album outside of the Christmas season. Miley Cyrus sneaks into the top 10 with her EP which is just long enough to make the album chart. Skepta falls just shy of his #13 peak with his last album, but Denzel Curry manages his first top 50 peaking album, single "RICKY" was close to giving him his first singles chart entry also. |

Ruel finally making the top 50! *.* Fingers crossed Painkiller can keep on climbing. He's been building a steady stream of hype for a while now, feel like he could be on the cusp of something big.

For yet another week I'm here to report that the top 3 are pretty much locked in place with almost complete dominance on sales and streams. Taylor Swift may be a contender to disrupt them next week, but I see her landing at #4 as the sales of "You Need To Calm Down" aren't close to how "ME!" did on opening week, it won't even beat "Old Town Road" on sales at this rate. Evidently this week's top 7 has taken cue from the UK Charts. "Sucker" is aided by the new album release to return to the top 10, though for no reason "Only Human" is excluded from the chart, maybe next week. That exclusion makes for a pretty barren list of new entries, with only 4 this week (and only 1 re-entry to the top 100 to boot), two of which involve Chris Brown to your excitement. "No Guidance" is his first top 20 hit as a lead artist since..."Don't Wake Me Up". Avicii also has two simultaneous top 20 hits as "Heaven" sneaks in with its debut, which could possibly be its peak. Huge digital sales spurred on from TV appearances give Guy Sebastian his first top 40 hit since 2016, and a higher profile collaborator gives The Chainsmokers their first since...earlier this year, though that was 3 singles ago. After peaking at #51 partly due to a badly timed release, Luke Combs scores his first top 50 hit as "Beer Never Broke My Heart" is largely buoyed by his EP which was #1 on iTunes pretty much all week. He remains unlucky because another track on his EP lands at #101. Tyga's new album out nets him another chart entry as well as shutting down the last hope that "Taste" could ever sneak onto the chart in case his entire album was given free reign. "Taste" should in fact probably be in the top 100 this week still. Billie Eilish sneaks back to #1 in a week without competition, it's her 5th week there now. Jonas Brothers kind of called it quits on their way up so their album chart history took them to a new high of #5 with nothing to follow, until now. They continue the trajectory as their new album that actually has a proper chart hit on it takes them to #3. The posthumous Avicii album had a bit of confusing foul play (not unlike Luke Combs) by being released simultaneously around the world on a Thursday. This was not a problem in Australia because of time zones so I don't think he lost any pre-order sales. "TIM" enters at #6 which is the 2nd highest album chart entry for him behind "True", which debuted at #2 in 2013 and climbed to #1 in early 2014. Meg Mac's first album in 2017 was one of many casualties of Ed Sheeran's 3rd album as it peaked at #2. 2 years later and she returns with her 2nd album that lands 6 places above "Divide". Despite a distinct lack of ARIA top 10 hits on it, Tyga scores his first solo top 50 album. His collaboration with Chris Brown in 2016 made it to #3, "Legendary" takes him to #12. Polish Club are also in the club of having now released 2 albums since Ed Sheeran's last but they can't quite overtake him, and also slightly miss the #19 peak of their last. Nothing sums up Australia quite like the fact that we have a band called Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. They debut at #1 on the Vinyl Albums chart and #31 overall. Also I'm going overseas next week so Rush will be filling in for me in this thread then This post has been edited by Dircadirca: Jun 18 2019, 06:57 AM |

It helps block Taylor Swift from #1 for a second time, but unlike in the US, only one of those Taylor singles could manage #2. I'd tell you how close "You Need To Calm Down" was, but the figures haven't arrived yet for reasons unknown to me. Shawn & Camila are currently #1 on Spotify and Apple Music, even almost beating "Old Town Road" combined on the former, so they might be a contender for #1 next week. "No Guidance" becomes Drake's 13th top 10 hit and Chris Brown's 14th, a tally Drake will likely soon surpass as Chris Brown's last top 10 hit as lead artist ("Don't Wake Me Up") pre-dates all but one of Drake's top 10 hits ("Take Care"). For this week though, Chris Brown is the hotter property as the less climate-destroying of Drake's celebrations of the Raptors' win could only send its 2 tracks to #12 and #69. The former, "Money In The Grave", is the highest Rick Ross has ever charted, his previous best being #39 on Skrillex's "Purple Lamborghini" in 2016. Following some relatively-false starts with a mixtape and a single that didn't do much, Flume has finally returned with a higher-profile release and instantly scores his highest-charting song since his pair of smashes in 2016 (emphasis on 'song', as he did place slightly higher with an EP in late 2016), and returns London Grammar to the top 50 for the first time since "Strong", which became a top 5 hit in early 2014 (with the help of commercial radio playing the High Contrast remix). Joji managed to reach the top 20 with his "BALLADS 1" album last year and following some slow-burning success particularly with the song "SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK", his new track instantly brings him into the singles chart for the first time, although it's not the first time he's impacted it, as he was the YouTuber who started the "Harlem Shake" viral dance trend. And speaking of trends, the unofficial "Old Town Road" sequel, Blanco Brown's "The Git Up", is already in the top 50 - strangely doing best on sales, having been top 10 on iTunes for almost 2 weeks whereas, as of this chart's cutoff, it had barely cracked the Spotify top 100 (though it's much higher on Apple Music). Possibly of note for next week is that Jessica Mauboy has just performed her new single "Little Things" on The Voice and it's #2 on iTunes, so maybe she'll manage to crack the top 100 unlike her last single "Sunday" which, despite being her long-awaited (by me if no one else) return to non-TV-affiliated music, only reached #57 on iTunes (and didn't make the Spotify top 200). Bruce Springsteen only hit #1 once with a studio album (and once with a compilation) before this decade, but in very on-brand news for late-stage album sales, he's now made #1 with both of his last 2 albums. It was not in fact close at all between him and Madonna, as he sold almost twice as much; Madonna was much closer to #3 than to #1. It's the first time Madonna has missed #1 with a studio album since "American Life" (#3 behind the 2 biggest selling albums of 2003, Delta Goodrem and Norah Jones). For minor achievements, she did outsell Bruce on both the digital and vinyl charts. Australian dance producer Hayden James first hit the chart in early 2015 and has finally dropped his debut album (your move Peking Duk), including his long-running mid-level hits "NUMB" and "Just Friends". For all the effort Hot Hits Australia put into helping maintain those singles, he barely outranks an Australian country artist I personally have not previously heard of. No amount of Marshmello-sponsored longevity or Seeb-sponsored googly-eyed watermelons have saved Bastille from decline, their hit-free new album just missing the top 20 compared to "Wild World" reaching #7 in 2016. Next week, Mark Ronson might place somewhere in the top 10 (I have no idea really), and maybe Lil Nas X's EP will chart somewhere provided ARIA count its streaming correctly. |

Bastille not even making the top 20 is quite an ouch moment when their last two made the top 10.
Good to see Flume get another top 40 hit too. |

With 82% as many units, "Seņorita" wasn't particularly close in the end... but still closer than anything else has come to "Old Town Road", bar the first week of "I Don't Care". If you thought I'd get through writing 2 weeks of commentary without graphing something, you do not know me: "Seņorita" instantly becomes Shawn's highest charter, him having previously peaked at #4 with "Stitches", "Treat You Better", "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" and "If I Can't Have You", for a combined total of 12 weeks at #4. The Drake sidekick preferences are in Rick Ross' favour this week, so that's now 14 top 10 hits for Drake, and Meduza prove that the 2014 mould of UK-originating dance hits still has life in it with a top 10 entry. Mississauga's second-finest export, Ali Gatie instantly hit the Spotify charts worldwide when he dropped "It's You" 2 weeks ago (I'm not sure how) and Australia is taking to it faster than almost every other country. Jessica Mauboy's The Voice performance last week pays off; "Little Things" reached #1 on iTunes and debuts at #62. That's mostly from sales (it's #6 on the digital tracks chart) but not completely, and I've been seeing her on the home tab of Spotify this week as the Get Popped! playlist cover photo, so maybe there's minor streaming potential. No particularly big new albums this week, so that means Billie returns for a 6th week, only 2 of those being consecutive (1-1-2-1-2-2-2-2-1-2-1-3-1). When I mentioned Lil Nas X's EP last week I didn't think it would be anywhere high as the streams seemed much more concentrated on the top 3 tracks than I expected, but surprisingly it debuts at #5, with ~95% of its units coming from streaming. (For comparison, Billie is ~70%, and Bruce is ~5%). Mark Ronson also nets himself a top 10 position, though a decline from the #6 and #2 peaks of his last 2 albums, but maybe if "Find U Again" keeps going it'll become his first album with multiple top 50 hits. This week's mid-range Australian debut is probably better known than usual, as dream pop artist Hatchie has been getting some solid international attention over the last 2 years leading up to her debut album, not that her past singles/EP tracks are included. Next week has the likes of Kylie, The Black Keys, Mustard, and of course Chris Brown's latest data dump if anyone finds the time to sift through it, to maybe contend for #1 or top 10 spots. |
