QUOTE(Dircadirca @ May 6 2020, 01:32 PM) *
I made a joke about this last week laugh.gif

It feels like radio is perpetually cutting back on their obligation to support what's big in the charts since it doesn't really reflect their audience. There's a precursor to this from when London Grammar's "Strong" was taking off from triple j, and top 40 radio instead started playing High Contrast's drum & bass remix so it fit in more. This was back when they played nearly everything at the top of the charts but nowadays I expect they would just pretend it doesn't exist laugh.gif So I guess this year they've started trying hard to find workarounds to having to play slow ballads. Despite being one of the biggest radio hits of last year, "Someone You Loved" was also pretty much completely replaced on Nova by a remix a couple months ago, I guess "Before You Go" is just up-tempo enough to avoid the same fate at the moment. Naturally, radio will eventually just become 50% ads, 50% brando re-interpreting old songs in his goofy voice.

laugh.gif

In all fairless the High Contrast remix of Strong is a good song, the original is better but I enjoy the remix just as much these days - a very rare case where radio had it right laugh.gif It has become unbearable lately though and the fact One Thing Right is still Top 40 astonishes me. Nova is one of the worst offenders but you see it across all the commercial stations playing the same stuff over and over and over again. I was complaining the other day because they played Ride It, Post Malone, and One Thing Right basically back to back advertising "fresh hits" then had the audacity to play Memories once again mellow.gif

I think a major gripe I have is how anything r&b or hip hop is completely ignored by the pop radio stations but then when they all have their "old school/throwbacks" day because you can't be a popular radio station without relying on old songs apparently they play mainly r&b songs from the late 90s/early 00s. It's them trying to appeal to their target demographic I know but it's so hypocritical laugh.gif

Yeah, I was annoyed at the time but I really like the Strong remix now. Feels like it has its own merit beyond the original's coattails.

What astounds me about Nova is that they somehow win the 18-25 radio demographic but their programming feels completely at odds with this as they further transition into Hot AC. It makes me wonder what the future of R&B Fridays will be. Like in 10 years will they be playing the 'classics' from Travis Scott, Migos & Drake that they literally didn't play when they were hits laugh.gif

It's a very similar situation with the UK's commercial radio too, Capital (the hit music rival to Radio 1) has also been playing the Luca Schreiner remix of This City instead of the original, and they also insisted on playing the Future Humans remix of Someone You Loved instead laugh.gif

SAINt JHN has now been #1 for 5 weeks. Considering that the last two singles to go to #1 spent 35 weeks there combined, it is debatable if this can be considered an impressively long time. I would say he's odds-on favourite to take #1 next week, but it'll be quite close with The Weeknd (again) and also the new Ariana Grande/Justin Bieber song. DaBaby is also #1 on Spotify now with quite good sales but won't contend until next week. Thanks to the new remix, Meghan The Stallion makes for a nice TW/LW combination and scores a top 10 hit in the process. In a slow week, Marshmello & Halsey have the only new entry in the top 50. This is largely because Drake probably should have had a small handful of entries but mah singles only chart nonsense.

Drake scores his 3rd #1 album this week following "Views" and "Scorpion". Given that his closest competition is lingering streaming monsters, I imagine it didn't take much to do it. There's not really a lot to note. Not sure much can be expected next week, the top debut will probably come from one of Hp Boyz, Young Thug & Chris Brown, Katie Noonan or Kehlani.

For a 6th and seemingly last week, SAINt JHN is #1. The instigator appears to not be The Weeknd who remains close, but DaBaby who has rocketed ahead on streaming. Given the invisible divide between paid & free streaming, it's not impossible for SAINt JHN to stay at #1, but I'm leaning to DaBaby for this week. Of course, he's #4 this week because debuting ahead of him is Gal Gadot & co.'s cover of "Imagine". The next highest debut is from 6ix9ine who falls 6 places shy of his career high of #8 with "FEFE". If you get off to feeling superior for using arbitrary moral grounds to judge people for listening to something you wouldn't aurally enjoy in the first place, then good news because he's probably not getting any higher. Speaking of ~problematic~, ONEFOUR for the 3rd single in a row have landed a top 40 hit, and in turn, given A$AP Ferg his first ever top 50 hit (though "Plain Jane" is triple platinum iirc). "Say It Again" would probably be their highest charter if not for its badly timed release day. Don Toliver & Topic also score their 2nd top 50 hits, Topic had a #11 hit with "Home" back in 2016 that was rather held back by streaming, "Breaking Me" is already close to overtaking its Spotify peak.

Only under baffling circumstances could we possibly see this week where Drake's "Dark Lane Demo Tapes" lasts a 2nd week at #1, hanging on ahead of the 3 streaming inertia giants behind him. "Scorpion" lasted 3 weeks at #1 so this is not his longest runner but it's spent longer there than "Views". In classic me fashion, I looked through the iTunes charts to work out what might debut highest last week and of course the one big one I missed was literally the highest of them all again. But shout out to Hayley Williams landing at #6. Paramore have had 3 top 10 albums including 2 #1's. Next is Hp Boyz actually making their ARIA Chart debut only because like all drill & drill-adjacent Australian hip-hop, their appearance on the charts can never be relied upon, though "Engineers" was a huge hit in New Zealand. Despite streaming rules severely hampering EPs, they do well to land at #7. Kehlani also continues her upward trajectory with her highest charting album to date at #17. I have flat out no idea what to expect for next week's entries. Maybe Future will do okay, same with Charli XCX and Asking Alexandria. There's a Teskey Brothers live album at #1 on iTunes at the moment so they might have such scarce competition to take the top spot.

New #1's across the board. I made a bad prediction months ago that "The Box" would get to the top, but Roddy Ricch does have a #1 hit now alongside DaBaby on "ROCKSTAR". Increasingly adult contemporary leaning radio means that this song hasn't even cracked top 40 on airplay, meanwhile the 2nd most played song on Australian radio last week was brando of "Body" fame interpolating Charles & Eddie's 1992 hit "Would I Lie To You", which isn't even in the ARIA top 100, which bodes well for inevitable articles scolding millennials kids these days for not listening to the radio. Thus "Blinding Lights"'s 17 week run in the top 2 is over. "Don't Start Now" clinches a top 10 spot again, which means it overtakes "Circles" as the outright 3rd longest running top 10 hit. She may have trouble doing so again what with Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande certainly taking up one peg above "Don't Start Now" next week. I have been doing my best to determine its prospects on next week's chart, and my conclusion is that I really can't call it. I'm pretty sure "Rain On Me" will land in the top 2, but I'm unsure how to stack up its massive sales lead over DaBaby's massive streaming lead. I'm estimating ~3,000-3,500 ahead on digital, and maybe ~2,500-4,000 behind on streaming, so it could go either way. As an amusing side note, "Rain On Me" was dethroned early on iTunes on Monday night by..."Always Remember Us This Way", due to it being covered on The Voice. As I write this, it's just about to take back the top spot from..."Jealous" by Labrinth for the same reason. It's uncertain if the loss of promo from not being #1 on iTunes for a couple of days is offset by the streaming influx to Lady Gaga in general. Elsewhere this week, Katy Perry continues her knack for always *just* making the top 40 (apart from a random John Mayer collaboration, none of her top 100 entries have ever missed the top 40). With her streaming taking a little longer to peak, she may last a 2nd week in the top 50. StaySolidRocky gets his first top 50 hit while Kygo finally translates his bizarrely good digital sales of late into an instant top 50 hit with "Lose Somebody". This one is actually doing better than usual for him on streaming as well so it should climb next week.

It's been a good run in 2020 for Australian artists getting the top spot on the album chart. The latest is The Teskey Brothers who seem to have captured the modern boomer real music audience ever since their last album debuted at #2 with great longevity and ARIA Awards to show for it. This isn't just a quick fan grab though as their back catalogue has boosted on the chart too. Harry Styles' unusually successful post-album already-been-a-platinum-single single has also boosted him across the board enough to lead the pack on the streaming inertia albums, so he's poised to take back the top spot at some point, and further cement his prospects of having the biggest album of 2020. I have no idea why Luke Combs has two albums in the top 10 at once. Though he's only ever had a very brief running top 100 hit once here, Polo G manages a top 10 debut and even beats out Future. "High Off Life" is Future's highest charting album to date though at #15. Also seeing new heights is Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit at #19. Charli XCX isn't anywhere near where she charted last year understandably but I'm impressed she actually made the top 40 here and in New Zealand. Last year's Eurovision album got to #13 but considering the event wasn't even held, it's impressive that it makes the top 50 at all this year. Next week is the highly awaited battle for supremacy from The 1975, KSI & Agust D, where bizarrely I feel like KSI might have the best chance due to his stronger streaming. Elsewhere could be entries for Gunna & Custard, and maybe a bunch of Powderfinger albums.

In what was indeed a close battle, DaBaby takes the top spot for a 2nd week running. "Rain On Me" lands a #2 debut which is familiar territory for its artists, as Ariana Grande now has 3 #2 hits (buwyg,ib & Problem) and Lady Gaga has 5 (Paparazzi, Bad Romance, Alejandro, The Edge Of Glory). That's not to say it's certainly impossible to hit #1, but I suspect its dip in digital sales in this coming week will cost it. Apart from "Rain On Me", there is very little happening this week. As predicted last week, its flashy debut in turn kicks out "Don't Start Now", which has to settle for being the 3rd longest running top 10 hit of all time with 29 weeks in the top 10. After 6 months on the chart and a platinum certification, "Watermelon Sugar" is officially A Single™ and all the people who have been waiting to listen to it now are, and it returns to not quite the peak it reached when it wasn't A Single™. It could get there soon though as it hasn't dropped back down since. On an unrelated note, the well timed remix of "In Your Eyes" sends it back to also nearly a new peak. 11 months of "Dance Monkey" as the top Australian song may be coming to an end as Sam Fischer is just 1 place behind this week, and also Young Thug scores his 6th top 50 hit with "Go Crazy".

When The 1975 released their last album, it came packed with no hits and an effectively December release which meant that it debuted at #4 behind 3 soundtrack related albums (though it would be #3 based on the rules ARIA changed 6 months later). This week there are no obstacles to prevent them scoring a 2nd #1 album, following their first in 2016. It was still relatively close though as Agust D debuted behind at #2, while KSI also lands at #4. Gunna hits new highs at #17 this week, having previously just sneaked into the top 50 with his Lil Baby collab, though given ARIA I'm not sure how trustworthy the data is on that. BENEE released a vinyl set last week combining both of her EPs which sold enough to be at #5 on the Vinyl Albums chart this week, but it gives her a first ever top 50 album presumably because the streaming album rules severely impact EPs but now she can soak up the sweet sweet track equivalent streams from "Soaked" and "Find An Island". I'm very interested to see where she is next week. Caligula's Horse are also seeing new heights while Donny Benet has his first ever top 50 album. Australian indie rock royalty Custard disbanded at the turn of the century, but reformed a decade later. They've since put out 3 albums but their latest is their first to make the top 50 since 1999. At least for this week, they are indeed bigger than Tina. Next week is a mystery but if I had to take a guess, I would suspect that Lady Gaga is about to earn another #1 album.

I think it's worth noting that it's fairly difficult to debut at #1 in Australia, the last song to do so ("I Don't Care") was over a year ago. I feel like there's less promotional push for big new singles over here, and a lot of major worldwide stars tend to release their new singles at midnight US time, meaning half a day has already passed here with no sales & streams (while also missing the morning news cycle). Whenever a big new single comes out like this, kworb always shows Australia & New Zealand with fairly lackluster Friday debuts, but often being the few places where they climb on Saturday. All this is combined with playlist lag, where sometimes Hot Hits Australia takes a while to make major updates ("Yummy" took like 3 days to appear on it), and we don't get the top 50 playlists updated until the next day is almost done, leading to a 2 day lag on the 'top 50 effect'*. Even some of the most obvious big hits can limp their way in at #20 on Friday and crawl towards the top as the week goes by, and by the time they've made that weak entrance, you know they're not going to beat out the incumbent.

*It has this startling effect where songs now have to survive 2 days in a row to entrench themselves. Recently "Daisies" had a day to day performance of 53-50-51-50-52-49-51-52-63, never able to last the 2nd day, and doomed as soon as it missed 2 days in a row.

ARIA don't report figures but I was tracking it closely all week and estimated about 500 sales difference, which is indeed enough for half a day of missing streams to make the difference.

Somehow I just ended up looking back through previous chart threads and got super nostalgic looking at this thread and now I'm listening to some hella throwbacks from 2014: Replay, Live It Up, Up!, Mmm Yeah, Heart Beats Slow, drama.gif

DaBaby has a pretty cozy route to 3 weeks at #1. He's so severely lacking in competition that it's likely that "Rain On Me" will be overtaken for #2 next week by "Roses". Maybe the only real song to watch is Topic's "Breaking Me", which becomes his first top 10 hit after "Home" was an unlucky #11 peaker. Mind you, it's pacing very similarly to Regard's "Ride It" last year so maybe this current momentum will only amount to a #3 peak. Also entering the top 10 this week is Lady Gaga's "Sour Candy", her 3rd top 10 hit this year. People overseas seem to care more about the semantics of chart crediting than I do, possibly because of how dumb our charts are, but I just want to note that when ARIA published this chart on Saturday, BLACKPINK were not credited, and they weren't until at least Monday. I have no recollection of them ever adjusting credits mid-week, usually they're fixed on the 2nd week publication. Either way, BLACKPINK overtake BTS for the honour of the highest charting single by a Korean group. Possibly helped by the Anne-Marie remix, Sam Fischer finally makes the top 20 this week, and in doing so, overtakes "Dance Monkey" to be the biggest Australian song this week. With Guy Sebastian's "Choir" turning 1 year old about a week ago, no Australian song released in the last 12 months has topped this chart now. Speaking of Tones and I, she now has a 5th top 50 hit with her SpongeBob case title "Ur So F**kInG cOoL", though it's struggling to break the Spotify top 50 so it doesn't look like lasting long. We may soon have only 2 Australian songs in the top 50. Lewis Capaldi scores his 3rd top 50 hit with his oldest single "Bruises", which was not prominently utilised on Fortnite, but instead was covered on The Voice, propelling it to #1 on iTunes for half a week. It's also regrettably pushed up the rest of his catalogue in the process.

To the shock of nobody [citation needed], Lady Gaga scores her 4th #1 album this week, I am in fact counting "A Star Is Born" as a Lady Gaga album, alongside "Born This Way" and "The Fame Monster". I imagine absolutely nothing was close, with the next highest debut being Kip Moore's latest album whose title track is not a cover of Cat Stevens' most cursed song but the lyrics are suspiciously close. It's his highest charting album to date and 2nd top 10. Cold Chisel's iconic "East" album had its 40th anniversary and a vinyl release propels it back into the top 5. Kygo scores his first ever top 10 album with "Golden Hour". On the topic of classic Australian album re-releases, we also see the return of "Internationalist", the first especially big Powderfinger album and notably the one that has "The Day You Come" and "Passenger" on it, whose re-release also roughly coinicides with the band playing their first show together in a decade on an online stream. They only played about 6 songs but amazingly "Thrilloilogy" was one of them. Speaking of Australian bands being disappointing, Birds of Tokyo climbed to #41 this week which breaks their album's 5 week streak of only charting on perfect square numbers. Next week could see entries from Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, The Ghost Inside and Run The Jewels.

4 weeks at #1 for DaBaby. As noted last week, competition is so lacking that "Roses" & "Blinding Lights" have moved back up to #2 & #3. There continues to be very little in the way of competition so a 5th week is pretty much locked in. In part due to ARIA leaving it off the chart initially as they do all BENEE songs, "Supalonely" has until now, spent its entire chart run between #8 & #11. This week the planets align and she climbs to #6. Harry Styles also now matches the #12 peak that "Watermelon Sugar" initially set when it wasn't a single and people were illegally streaming it. "Rover" by S1mba is shaping up to be one of the biggest UK rap hits in quite a long time. It actually should be vaulting close to the top 10 this week thanks to the remix, however since it features Youngn Lipz & Hooligan Hefs, ARIA's not at all dodgy screening process for chart entries may make that count for null (or negative, since the remix has replaced the original on Hot Hits Australia). There's only one new entry in the top 50 and this absolute grift comes from the voice of Loud Luxury's "Body", interpolating "Would I Lie To You?" by Charles & Eddie. Someone out there is trying their absolute hardest to make it a thing, to the point that it has been the most played song on Australian radio for 3 weeks running, but when it first got there, it wasn't even charting in the ARIA top..100. Now it's very high on Hot Hits Australia making sure it's integrated into the national psyche. Imagine if they put this sort of effort into budding Australian artists.

Lady Gaga retains the #1 spot on the album chart, which makes for a noteworthy feat as all of her 4 #1 albums have held it for at least 2 weeks. Given what's directly behind her, it seems to have been done with little pressure. This week's top debut comes from Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, who reach the top 10 for the first time ever at #4. Same goes for The Ghost Inside at #5. Run The Jewels did not chart on release with "Run The Jewels 3" probably due to the timing and release strategy, but did so a month later with the physical release getting to #36. They've jumped up one perfect square as "RTJ4" gets a new high of #25 on immediate release. I have no idea what ARIA did with their digital data from Thursday given the timing of the release. Was it bundled onto this chart, or dumped to never be acknowledged ever? I guess we'll never know. Next week has a strong Australian flavour with a Vika & Linda Greatest Hits, and new albums from The McClymonts & Spacey Jane.

“ Imagine if they put this sort of effort into budding Australian artists.”

HONESTLY

With the frequent TV ad promo Thelma Plum’s cover of These Days would be an INSTANT hit in Australia if it had any radio play & playlist support. I can already see it contending for Top 30 at least in the Hottest 100 next year... like it can be a hit by an Aboriginal artist. Yes it’s a cover of a white Aussie band but if anything that should help it take it off. Then next time she releases a real single it might get some decent support right away

I've said years ago that I feel like in some respects, they fall back on established artists because those are the kinds who have enough initial fanfare that the playlist boost can push them into the chart, but as a result, you get a situation where every new Australian hit is by Hilltop Hoods, Dean Lewis, Pnau, Illy, Vance Joy, The Rubens, Flume, 5SOS, Bliss N Eso, Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy, Birds of Tokyo, Amy Shark (and recently Tones And I), giving off this vague feeling of diversity among those artists but in reality it's just the same artists year in year out. But not only is it unsustainable (I'm Good?, Then What, Live In Life, Two Of Us all were not even top 200 on Spotify for weeks before HHA kicked in), they're falling behind the times and ignoring the Australian artists that are making waves. You see it in the Hottest 100 when the old guard (Flume excepted) all get shown up by Mallrat, Thelma Plum, G Flip etc, or how counter to those prior examples, basically every new song by ONEFOUR, Hooligan Hefs, Hp Boyz, The Kid LAROI makes the Spotify chart on day 1 with no support, only dropping off because the support never arrives (though The Kid LAROI should get a top 50 hit next week). Bands and artists can still do fine without top 50 exposure (The Jungle Giants might have 6 platinum singles soon enough) but it's not good going forward if a new generation grow up only exposed to international artists. It has a bad trickling down effect.

DaBaby has now been #1 for 5 weeks. This means it's the shortest running #1 hit in the past 10 months, but it should match the 6 week run for "Roses" safely next week. The main contender to watch out for now is Jawsh 685 with instantly massive sales and fast climbing streams. He'll be top 10 for certain next week and maybe top 5 at that. Utilising the stop-gap before then, we have two new top 10s this week, with Harry Styles getting there with "Watermelon Sugar" whose 2nd wave is so drawn out that I've run out of ways to make fun of it, and S1mba whose "Rover" sees a massive climb thanks to the remix version featuring Hooligan Hefs, Youngn Lipz & Hooks, the former two of which would have various reasonably charting singles in Australia if our chart were competent. But it makes for an interesting elevation for UK rap as I can scarcely think of any that has charted this high ever. The only loose examples I can think of are Labrinth's "Earthquake" featuring Tinie Tempah reaching #4, and Big Brovaz having multiple top 10 hits, but this feels like new ground. The only UK rapper I can think of with a top 10 album is KSI, as Stormzy, The Streets & Skepta all narrowly missed out. Speaking of non-US rappers, the highest debut of the week isn't Jawsh 685 but it's actually The Kid LAROI, the 16 year old Australian rapper who has had multiple top 100 charting hits this year but his Juice WRLD collab "GO" becomes his first ever top 50. Drake's "Chicago Freestyle" is still egregiously missing from the chart.

It was a battle for #1 between Victoria, New South Wales & Western Australia this week. Considering that COVID restrictions were increased in Victoria this week, Vika & Linda can possibly count themselves lucky that this wasn't until after they secured their #1 debut or things could have been different. The sister duo have never had a top 50 charting single (a #51 mind you) but several strong selling albums in the '90s. This greatest hits set is a first for them at #1 though. In doing so they hold off some new local upstarts, as we add to the always growing list of triple j Unearthed artists who have peaked at #2 on the album chart. Spacey Jane hail from Fremantle so it is really easy to compare them to San Cisco even before you find out that they're a 4 piece band with one girl (San Cisco are down to 3 now mind you), who of course also reached #2 on the album chart. 2 years ago I saw them live as an opening act before LANKS, Heaps Good Friends, Asta & The Jungle Giants, and they have gotten significantly more popular since then. Behind them are The McClymonts, Australia's stalwart country trio who are quite accustomed to charting high, but are still yet to have a #1 album, reaching their highest peak in 2010 behind a long incumbent Susan Boyle album. The 1975 immediately dropped out of the top 50 from #1 before but some manner of physical release has brought them back for a 2nd week in the top 50. Justice For The Damned reach a new chart peak, while Norah Jones has hit a new low. Next week is another competitive one, as we have new albums from Ocean Alley, Bob Dylan & Lamb Of God, as well as yet another compilation relief soundtrack.
