It’s Saturday morning, it’s 2am, and this is the Buzzjack Song Contest semi final 1.

I’m Jameela Jamil and I’ll be hosting the first actual semi! We have loads of insane songs all hoping for your points.



As always, you will vote for your 10 actual favourites in the following format:

Will any country do the UNTHINKABLE and get yet another win, or will we have a new Ellie Goulding where a country finally gets their first win? We’ll all find out before long, but before then, let’s meet the ones to watch:

One thing’s for sure, this semi final is looking to be insane from start to finish, especially without actual cheap entries like Icona Pop’s 'I Don’t Care'.

The actual deadline for your votes is Friday 15th August 2014 at 23:59 GMT, make sure you get your votes in before then or you will actually drive me insane.

• SEMI 001 VOTES TO BE SENT TO JOSEPHSTYLES.
• The deadline in the first post is final. If there are any changes to this, we'll let you know.
• If you fail to vote, or incorrectly vote within this timeframe, your entry will be subject to a 33% deduction. This may be overlooked in exceptional circumstances.
• As the semis and final results are separate, only the host of that semi / final will know the results: Joseph will know the Semi 001 results, Jay will know the Semi 002 results, I will know the final results. Aside from that, we won't know the results of what we're not hosting. Makes it a bit more interesting... no-one will know or have any indication of who will win until they win!
• I have put Bellamia and Jayrusalem in opposite semis to the ones they are hosting, to make it fair. And a bit more fun.
• Aeroche AND Jamvale will vote in both Semi 001 + Semi 002.
• I, ✖ ketalina ✖, will still partake in the odds / predictions thread for the week of the semi-finals, as I will be blind to the information supplied to my two co-hosts.

Yay for 2am semis.

DAMN at Ethanola not being in my semi, after discovering he posted a thread for 'Cry For Freedom' way back when it was fresh off the press in oh nine (something I'm mildly annoyed to discover as I thought it was just an obscure fave of mine but at least the thread had no replies, might go give it one now actually). Mdiče you know the song already cos it was track 1 in my CD Swap that one time. Hopefully it'll be PHRESH to everyone else I haven't specifically sent it to.

Remember a vote for Persephonia is a vote for peace in the Middle East. Or something.

I see Karin Park being mined from the Persephonia entry history this month ~

I couldn't work out if it would appeal to EVERYONE or NO-ONE. And I prefer my current entry now even if every other track on the album is said to be better!

I have discovered the Persephonia 23rd/24th place conspiracy runs deeper than I thought.

In the 13 contests since Truls I've been drawn into semi-final 1 four times. I've also finished 23rd/24th four times. They were the exact same 4 contests!!1! ('Serbia' was drawn into semi-final 1 as well but to preserve the conspiracy the semis were cancelled).

So yeah Jay Dabhi is gonna come 23rd/24th.

Some random observations from Semi 1...

The Architecture in Helsinki track sounds like a slightly cooler Steps

The chorus of Bignia's track is like a leftover from Take That's Progress (still good though)

Persephonia's entry is their best in a very long time, coming for another 2nd place *.*

I'm glad you like the song though, I know you don't like your opinion being held in higher regard than others but my songs appeal to you so rarely that it still feels quite SPECIAL when they do ~ Especially when this is one of my favourite songs I've entered.

My thoughts on the semi:

Really good semi overall )no need to wade through loads and loads of dance this month.

I have seen one of the worst dresses I have seen in one video. Sack does not do it justice.

Thank you BJSC for finding an XTC song that is utter tripe. (Something I did not think was possible.)

The video for Your Darkness made me feel sugoku natsukashii.

Where was Silent Bob in the Allday video? Or is that just Jay's lovechild?

EDIT: Oh just realised that it's not the XTC I know and love but some DJ. How'd he get away with calling himself that?

I'm not sure if this is just a reflection of how much I loathe where music's at in 2014, but this genuinely feels like the worst semi-final I've ever taken part in. I don't want to give anything my 12 so far.

It may not be deep house PER SE (phonia lololol) but it's still low-key-ish electronic music which isn't exactly miles away from that sound. And it doesn't have an obvious hook either. The year I'll give you ~

Voted. I literally can't remember the last time I listened to a semi-final and had absolutely zero desire to listen to any of the tracks again. There wasn't much actively dreadful stuff but so much of it was just there. I hope semi two's better...
