Ari just confirmed on twitter this is the next single!

I can see this dropping today or next Friday 😍

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 4th January 2019, 09:54 AM

I wonder if she means on your fingers, or on the phone?

The writer could have been clever and used a double entendre. I wrote a song once called "Over You", and one of the lines was "Got your number, got your ring." which was open to interpretation, I did a crappy low budget lyric video that showed a phone and then a ring. However in this case I believe it's about her friendship rings she has with her bestfriends.

Posted by: Juan Carlos ⚡️ 10th January 2019, 08:05 PM

Out next Friday.

Posted by: Theo. 10th January 2019, 08:24 PM

Oh that's soon! The artwork is very... questionable but judging from her post https://www.instagram.com/p/BsWK4bGA_Z2/, she's already filmed the video

Posted by: Jordan Lee 11th January 2019, 12:55 PM

Is the album having a Japanese theme?

The artwork for imagine also had Japanese writing.

Coincidence possibly?

Excited to hear this though. Possibly the next UK #1 single?

Posted by: Jack 11th January 2019, 02:07 PM

^ The artwork for '7 Rings' isn't Japanese writing, it's graffiti? laugh.gif

Posted by: danuary 11th January 2019, 02:35 PM

There seems to be two Parental Advisory stickers, one of them is Japanese.

That’s what I was meaning on this one not the Graffiti laugh.gif

I only asked that as Ariana has shown a lot of interest in Japan and Japanese culture for a while now.

Posted by: Jack 11th January 2019, 03:32 PM

Oh lmao I missed that, sorry!

Posted by: John-James 11th January 2019, 10:14 PM

She's one of the biggest western artists in Japan so she's probably just trying to be a bit more inclusive

Posted by: DexTheHalls 12th January 2019, 04:54 AM

Is it just her being oddly inclusive or could it possibly have Japanese lyrics in it? Maybe a big Japanese artist? Idk maybe it’s just her new style

Probably not. Imagine had it too and there were no Japanese lyrics in that.

hype

wish rihanna would have this release strategy

Posted by: Jordan Lee 14th January 2019, 12:54 AM

Apparently the music at the very start of the thank u, next music video is actually the instrumental to 7 rings.

Posted by: Blond 2.0 14th January 2019, 09:16 PM

Can't wait to hear it

https://www.instagram.com/p/BsoDyrfATiV/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=18wy8ajh7yj6h

Hyped for this! Interesting that she's gone back to the pre-TUN release strategy for this (and to a lesser extent, Imagine) when it worked so well for that

Posted by: jakewild 14th January 2019, 09:53 PM

hannah lux again im guessing from that preview...

tbh i want dave meyers back asap tho to give us another NTLTC/GIAW moment!

Posted by: Juliano 17th January 2019, 02:36 PM

There's a 15 second LQ snippet circulating, sounds catchy af, very R&B too.

Posted by: Liаm 18th January 2019, 04:44 AM

Omg it samples My Favourite Things from Sound Of Music!!

It's... interesting. I definitely like it, it's like a more put together version of 7/11 by Beyonce to me a bit. The Julie Andrews melody works bizarrely well too laugh.gif

I WANT IT. I GOT IT. I WANT IT. I GOT IT.

I’m gonna have that stuck in my head when I go to sleep, thanks Ari

Posted by: liamk97 18th January 2019, 07:41 AM

"You like. My hair. Gee, thanks. Just bought it."

This is such a catchy song! I was hooked by my first listen and I say that as someone who took time getting into 'thank u, next'. The sample doesn't really feel jarring despite being so recognisable. Pretty sure someone else sampled 'My Favourite Things' and failed to pull it off and the less said about JLS' 'The Club is Alive'... (although it is a bop).

Posted by: Theo. 18th January 2019, 08:15 AM

This is amazing but it's far too short?! It kinda just ended abruptly. Would be amazing for it to be another #1 for her but we'll see, Sweet But Psycho is still doing good numbers

I'm in two minds as to how I feel. It's infectious and catchy, but it's not really my thing and I doubt I'd be giving it the time of day beyond the first listen if it was pretty much anyone else..

The video is fantastic though! The visuals and aesthetics are orgasmic!

And ofc if it gets #1 it's gonna piss me off even more that NTLTC and GIAW didn't do it laugh.gif

Now that you mention it I do recall them sampling it although I feel they're could be a more recent example. I could just be remembering wrong. Either way, the sample in '7 Rings' doesn't feel jarring or corny and it's not even relied on as the main hook of the song.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 18th January 2019, 09:37 AM

It reminds me of Scream by Kelis

I really love it though. On first two listens I like it more than I did thank u, next at the time of premiere.

Love the video too. It really makes a difference for me a song and video are released together.

I can easily see this being the next UK #1 and I can easily see it being her second US #1 too

Fab. Soooo much better than the dull Thank U Next

Posted by: LewisGT 18th January 2019, 08:27 PM

This is the weakest of the 3 we've heard from the album so far for me.

Although it's still like a 10/10 though. I don't think she's capable of releasing a song I don't instantly love any more. wub.gif

Posted by: BotchLikeThis 18th January 2019, 08:49 PM

This is a triumph! The song is so catchy and the video is perfect for it. The third verse *.*

Posted by: Cqmerqn 18th January 2019, 10:47 PM

Don’t get the hate for this from some people. It’s pop perfection? Absolutely incredible, it’s everything I want from her.

Posted by: Joe. 18th January 2019, 11:23 PM

Yeah this seems to be being torn apart in most places which is a bit over the top. My thoughts:

The sound of music sample is so done and cheesy, but the rest of the song bops. It’s a bit cringy white girl wasted, but I’m still enjoying it. It’s not as deep and intricate as Thank U Next, but not every song has to me! I reckon it’ll go down really well in a club!

Posted by: Liаm 19th January 2019, 12:54 AM

Some of the reactions are ridiculous, of course not everyone has to like it and there's no way they will but I think a lot of people either will just hate everything she does anyway because they only listen to Reel muzik like The 1975, or they won't accept anything less than another Into You. I can see why people don't like it, but I haven't seen much substance as to why people don't, it just feels like the same groups hate on her because she's popular and isn't releasing exactly what they want drama.gif

The official Spotify numbers aren't out yet but over 12 million would be worldwide streams I think!

This is growing on me more and more with each listen! So immediately quotable, I just wish it was a little bit longer

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 19th January 2019, 09:11 AM

Ari has to be careful, Princess Nokia in on her case as she is saying Ariana has copied and appropriated a song of hers called "Mine". They do sound similar from the clips I've heard, but not too much as it's "only" the structure of the verse that's really similar..

At least she's on it straight away and not waited something ridiculous like 4 years x laugh.gif

Posted by: Cqmerqn 19th January 2019, 10:57 AM

12m!!! It won’t be that officially though due to time zones, but it should be 8-9m!

It does sound awfully similar, I think she'll maybe have to add writing credits and hand over some royalties. ohmy.gif

Posted by: Slick 19th January 2019, 12:27 PM

Really love this. Much more instant than 'Thank U, Next' which I still don't think deserved all of that success. She is smashing it with her single releases.

Posted by: Jack 19th January 2019, 12:46 PM

I like it but it feels much more superficial / shallow than most of her output prior to this and I find it hard to connect with, I always have with songs when they just talk about how much money they have. I still enjoy it though and I think some people's reactions are a bit over the top.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 19th January 2019, 01:21 PM

Listened to this 5 times in a row this morning.

It’s a definite BOP. I can see why it’s smashing.

It’s obviously not meant to be taken seriously and it’s a great song for what it is, I can’t wait to hear this in a club.

It’s also very Spotify friendly too I knew it would smash on Spotify as soon as I heard it.

Posted by: liamk97 19th January 2019, 01:47 PM

In regards to time length, I think it should be longer but in terms of the outro rather than the lyrical content. There's three verses which is absolutely sufficient, it's just a shame it just ends when she stops singing when there's room for a 30 second outro.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 19th January 2019, 02:09 PM

ISSA BOP.

Easily the best from this era so far <3 I was a bit worried that the sample would come across tacky but it actually works fine (although the verses > - definitely getting a Beyoncé vibe from it in the best possible way)

I'm enjoying them, but I don't really care for them much. Well, 7R is growing on me, but we'll see.

Posted by: danuary 19th January 2019, 10:36 PM

Thought it was rather tacky but it's grown on me on second listen. I'd prefer it if they didn't base it so heavily around the Favourite Things sample but it's a bit of a bop.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 19th January 2019, 10:54 PM

This is easily my 3rd favourite Ariana song now, behind One Last Time and No Tears Left To Cry

Posted by: dobbo 19th January 2019, 11:16 PM

I actually like the sample and the chorus. Not a big fan of the verses which are monotonous and repetitive. Prefer it to thank u next on balance, however.

Posted by: Juliano 20th January 2019, 09:40 AM

Day 3 still smashing!

I think as well, if you take the track as the satire pop that it is, then it's far more enjoyable, if you take it seriously and see it as cocky, it's fun as well, it's a little too brash. There have been a few instances where satire pop has been taken far too seriously by the majority and completely backfired on an artist. "Hard Out Here" by Lily Allen springs to mind.

Ariana is truly killing it right now.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 22nd January 2019, 02:35 AM

Very comfortably midweek #1 in UK

4th #1 incoming.

On sales only won’t this be her 6th as well!! I’m sure one last time and no tears were sales #1 but officially #2.

She’s easily gonna overtake most pop females and be up there with Madonna Rihanna and Spice Girls for female
#1s I think possibly even within the next few years.

Posted by: Jack 23rd January 2019, 09:51 PM

Why am I hating this?! sad.gif

I've loved every single one of her singles since Problem (even 'Everyday'!) and this is just.... nothing? It kind of feels very shallow and hollow, the majority of her other singles seemed to have a bit of depth to them. This just feels like female Drake, it's okay and it's perfectly fine and I'm so happy she's getting crazy success but I can't help but feeling underwhelmed.

Posted by: Rob S~ 24th January 2019, 01:02 AM

I'm preferring this to TUN which I never *got* and thought it's success was a little excessive especially when Tears didn't reach #1. I also loved the video too.. her videos for this year have been really strong and consistent. Not against this doing well by any means.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 25th January 2019, 05:42 PM

Posted by: Conderella 27th January 2019, 09:56 PM

I'm still utterly obsessed with this and i think this radical image change for Ariana is GENIUS.

I am having trouble believing that she is that shallow to finally decide to release a song about how much money she has so I have no problem with the in-your-face boastful arrogant lyrics~
everything just works!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 28th January 2019, 04:38 PM

Her second #1 in the US now as well.

Crazy to think she’d never had one and now she’s had two in such a short space of time.

Also one of very few artists to have two tracks enter at #1 on the Billboard charts as well.

Posted by: Atonement 28th January 2019, 04:59 PM

Posted by: Dexton 1st February 2019, 07:11 AM

A guest verse is what this NEEDS tbh, the only thing holding me back from loving this as much as/more than the last few singles is that third verse where she unnecessarily goes squeaky. The rest of the song is 10/10 but that brief section is sooooo off putting

2 Chainz is an odd choice though, not an artist I’d peg working with Ariana tho Louisa managed to get a throwaway rap verse on YES so I guess he just likes getting paid laugh.gif I would’ve preferred a female guest remix tho to fit more with the song

Its so funny what hype can do for an artist. Lets not pretend this song is anywhere near a great song & will be remembered among her actually good songs.

Then again i am a bitter 2013 went-to-the-intimate-london show she did in 2013 when most disliked her cause she couldnt annunicate.

She becomes the first ever artist to replace herself at UK #1 for 2 consecutive weeks!

Quite an feat from her that is. Easily the biggest artist in the UK chartwise would you say?

chhartwise i can't think of anyone else who has had this kind of dominance in recent years

Posted by: Cqmerqn 11th March 2019, 04:59 PM

I’d say that Ariana is eaassily the biggest artist in the world right now.

In the UK I’d say 2017 Ed Sheeran although chart rules were different then.
Bieber too.

Female wise though I’d say 2009 Lady Gaga.

Rihanna was also huge in the GGGB / Loud eras.

Returns to #1 for a sixth week in the US! Incredible longevity for this and Thank U, Next!

Posted by: Mack. 25th March 2019, 05:16 PM

Chartwise, I would say Rihanna between 2010-2012, and GaGa in 2009 in that year alone regarding female artists.

7th week at #1 for 7 rings

That's so insane! Couldn't be prouder. Bigger things yet to come I can tell.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 26th March 2019, 02:18 AM

As amazing as the success she’s had is I wish I could swap the chart runs and positions from sweetener and thank u next singles wise.

7 rings is a bop though.

Officially Platinum *.*

Blimey she can't do anything wrong at the moment can she?

Woo, I'm glad a song where Ari is the lead, rather than just a feature, is looking likely to become her longest runner now! A smash.

Posted by: JosephAvery 26th August 2019, 05:31 PM

Wow!! Actually quite surprised she's not had a longer runner than that ohmy.gif

Posted by: Cqmerqn 30th August 2019, 03:07 PM

Smash!

Posted by: Jade 20th November 2019, 04:23 PM

This is nominated for 'Record of the Year' and 'Best Pop Solo Performance' at the Grammy Awards!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 20th November 2019, 05:16 PM

I really thought that thank u, next would’ve been her single to get nominations but happy non the less!

Last year I was certain it would’ve been no tears too and it was God is a woman laugh.gif

What was the cut-off point for nominations? I only ask because 'thank u, next' (song) was released on November 3rd last year, so I'm not sure if it would count!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 21st November 2019, 06:49 PM

I think it was August 31 for the 2020 ones. Earlier than usual smile.gif

Posted by: Jade 21st November 2019, 06:58 PM

Ahh okay, thank you, I had no idea! In that case I'm surprised about '7 rings' being chosen over 'thank u, next' too. Her only AMA nomination that revolves around a song (albeit for the visuals) is '7 rings' as well. I guess 'thank u, next' is the one smashing on the EOY lists instead - so both of them getting the chance to shine in different ways!

Achieved in less than a year! 'thank u, next' is very close to 1 billion as well.

Posted by: 𝕮𝖖𝖒x 2nd January 2020, 04:11 PM

Omg but it’s at 999.3m!!

(Her best song did that!)

Well I think this calls for a ’7 rings’ streaming party to close the gap for real! cheer.gif

One year since she dropped this *.* I’m still not bored of it, one of my favourites in her discography!

Posted by: Cqmerqn 18th January 2020, 09:43 AM

I was just saying earlier that I love it just as much as when it came out! Sooo good and defo my fave Ari song!

Posted by: LewisGT 18th January 2020, 09:23 PM

I can't believe it's been a year already. ohmy.gif

The song's held up super well for me too.

Posted by: Juliano 18th January 2020, 09:51 PM

Literally just thinking about how 2019 was the quickest year of my life.

Posted by: Jade 18th January 2021, 03:09 PM

...and now it's been 2 years! Happy birthday to this smash *.*

Still my favourite single from the 'thank u, next' era heart.gif

The Kelly and Ari content has been non-stop this week!

Posted by: DangerousJulian 3rd December 2021, 06:05 PM

I am LOVING all this content, I can't believe how hard Kelly just slayed '7 rings'. ohmy.gif cool.gif

Posted by: Jade 1st January 2022, 01:39 AM

This is currently climbing up Apple... New Year's Eve effect?

Posted by: Jade 18th January 2022, 06:04 PM

3 years!! I must admit that I was more fond of it at the time than I am now, it was my favourite on 'thank u, next' - now that is 'ghostin', but still a banger and so huge for her.

Posted by: LewisGT 18th January 2022, 09:21 PM

What a time that was to be an Ariana fan!

I know right?! Around this time I was starting a brand new job role and was feeling daunted so the whole era was a massive comfort *.* time has just zoomed since then, would not have believed that 3 years later I was working from home most of the time laugh.gif and that Ariana had been a coach on The Voice lmao.

A forever iconic snapshot in time:

Posted by: LewisGT 18th January 2023, 03:43 PM

Four years since Ariana released her biggest hit.

Oh wow ohmy.gif I don't think '7 rings' has aged massively well already compared to a lot of 'thank u, next' but I was obsessed at the time.

Posted by: Jade 18th January 2024, 05:51 PM

Today marks 5 years since this was released ohmy.gif happy birthday, '7 rings'! What a smash it was.

Posted by: Jord 18th January 2024, 07:19 PM

This still feels really recent to me! Doesn’t at all feel like five years since this!

I’ve always liked it for what it is. It doesn’t necessarily have a huge vocal moment what I tend to love from her but it’s joyous, fun, not necessarily to be taken seriously and I think a song like this probably really helped at her at the time of release when she was experiencing what she was experiencing.

I probably prefer a chunk of the album tracks of the thank u, next era to the singles though but can definitely also see why she chose those tracks to be the singles (and they all become UK #1s so she chose well).

I think my pre-Covid job situation feeling like a lifetime ago has a knock on effect for my perception of time towards this era, as I heavily associate the two laugh.gif

I was obsessed with this song at the time but I'm not as fond of the trap sound now. I think 'ghostin' will be the most evergreen track from the album for me <3
