Mel & Kim - Where Is Love

I'm a bit confused about how Mel & Kim are releasing a new single when Mel died in 1990? Is this a reworked demo from 30 years ago or something, anyone know? I can't find much info on it on google either.

Posted by: ML Hammer95 23rd February 2018, 10:29 AM

Post Malone at #29 already! The chorus is so melodic that I wouldn't be surprised if this was another hit!

Yeah, it's a shame they've jumped on the tropical bandwagon but at least they've kept the guitars in. I actually quite like the song.

I'm surprised the Kylie remix is doing so well. I guess it's just her fanbase buying it, but even so remixes don't usually get so high do they? (I know the New Rules Initial Talk remix did quite well).

Guess strictly did nothing for Alexandra popularity I thought she would have managed top 100 at least with sales so low

Regardless, the majority of the biggest demographic of Spotify users would skip past "Dancing" if it came on on shuffle. We're in an era where music has to be "cool" and Kylie just isn't. Personally I like "Dancing" though!

Posted by: Joe. 24th February 2018, 10:13 PM

Kylie is 16 now!

And Dancing is somewhat modern for a Kylie song. I don’t think it would be skipped THAT much. It would be far from a streaming smash but if it was on Hot Hits it’d have a decent top 40 run, at least.

Posted by: Regina 24th February 2018, 10:15 PM

The fact that Dancing sounds similar to Anywhere means it'd get a fair few streams on playlists and alot of people would choose to listen to it.

Posted by: Joe. 24th February 2018, 10:19 PM

It’s a perfectly passable song for the ‘Spotify demography’. Pink’s music, for example sounds actually a bit more mature, and What About Us did plenty fine on streaming. Some people would skip but if a song is on a playlist most listeners will just play it through mindlessly anyway.

Posted by: JosephSprayberry 24th February 2018, 10:20 PM

If Dancing had Rita Ora's name attached to it instead of Kylie's, I'm confident it'd be a big hit. I think Dancing is perfectly commercial. A huge #1? No way, but I think it could be a solid top 40 if people stopped the "she's irrelevant" mindset when she's one of the biggest artists of all-time, still producing better pop music than most of the people who are charting higher than she is.

Posted by: iain 24th February 2018, 10:22 PM

Yeah, it would do fine on streaming if it was on some playlists. Either way, it’s setting up the album nicely, which has already has over 10,000 preorders in the UK (I know I sound like a deluded stan but it’s from someone pretty reliable]. Also it’s 15 and 34 now.

I would take the 10k pre orders with a pinch of salt. Those figures generally do not get released. Fans more often than not make them up and I think 10k at this point might be slightly ambitious.

Yeah I would usually agree, though this figure is from TheHeadlessPostman, who works in the industry and is pretty much the oracle of insider Kylie knowledge. Given those mad Golden bundles where you get like a cd, vinyl and cassette (!) per purchase, and the fact that she sold out 1500+ UK tickets at £85 per ticket in seconds for her album launch concert, I think the core fandom is stronger than ever at the moment and willing to buy in bulk...but maybe it’s wishful thinking on my part!

I mean, I was just estimating that Dancing would get maybe to around, say, #60 , on Spotfiy (I know that’s not great) with major playlists support , which with ACR would be enough for a few weeks top 40? I don’t think that’s a dramatic estimation given she’s been just outside the top 40 once already and very possibly will be again this week.

I know, but it shouldn't be. Ultimately, age is the only thing that is making Kylie "irrelevant". The Aphrodite era was successful so it's not like Radio 1 began ignoring her because she was flopping. Furthermore, Into the Blue sounded massive to me. It's a shame that one station can just decide when an artist isn't relevant to youth anymore.

It's not just that; it's clear that urban music is the focus genre being promoted to younger people these days. It seems to be the BBC's agenda. BBC Radio 1Xtra is huge now too. Artists like Kylie are the complete opposite of this.

I still think it might be just a waiting game. Maybe people will see how well Kylie seems to be doing on iTunes and Spotify will reciprocate one way or another

Posted by: Midge 24th February 2018, 11:11 PM

The only way Kylie is going to get a top 40 hit out of this is if the fans all buy each remix singularly, on the same week, and try and stream each version as much as possible - thus fabricating the position. Outside of the fanbase, it just won't catch on.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 24th February 2018, 11:11 PM

Simply cannot see it if no one is streaming. Even if orginal and remix could get 20,000 a day it would help, but nothing

Shame as she did some promo with Spotify and Apple etc but not getting played. Silly Kylie fans would rather watch on YouTube etc rather than a simple sign up on Spotify and put on repeat with volume down for 30 mins lol.

Ant and Dec repeat at 1pm on itv1 tomorrow so she could hold a few sales again tomorrow and the 59p price will help .... The physicals are being released 6th April again a strange decision but helps to sell the album bundles so that's why....... She could have easily had a top 40 hit but again plan failed really. Anyhow album will sell ok

Illyus and Barrientos remix out on Friday 2nd and already had radio 1 play etc but you can't hear Kylie lol. Anton Powers mix out on 9th March also .... A radio 1 DJ surely will promote it. .... If we stream all four remixes on same week etc

It’s been out for 5 weeks and hasn’t fallen outside the iTunes top 100 despite minimal radio support outside Radio 2. Other artists relying solely on Radio 2 support (Shania, Blondie, Manics, Texas etc) see their single charting briefly in the iTunes top 100 (if that) and then drop like a stone. The fan base would have bought it in week one. Clearly it’s appealing to *somebody* outside the fan base, and given a little more Radio and Spotify support could be a decent hit.

It’s also 13 and 34 on iTunes now.

A lot of those would have been curiosity streams. It would have significantly decreased the next day even if it got added to Hot Hits UK.

I don't think Hot Hits support would do anything for 'Dancing' at this stage. There's 70 songs on Hot Hits now, so less impact for each especially those towards the bottom of the playlist, which Kylie would no doubt be if she did ever get added.

Posted by: cqmerqn 24th February 2018, 11:29 PM

You'll find the iTunes chart is more 'mature' than the Spotify chart in terms of the demographic using it; plus sales have dwindled so much that it's easier to sit in the top 100 these days. It's also much easier to shoot right up in a matter of hours. I think I'd compare Kylie as an act now to Steps last year: clearly there's an appetite for her, but she's a legacy act now. There's nothing she can do to appeal to the kids, unfortunately.

Posted by: Midge 24th February 2018, 11:30 PM

Posted by: SmileyKylie 24th February 2018, 11:40 PM

Yes what I mean with Spotify is I don't expect her to get 100-300k a day, I just thought she would be capable of 40-50 for a week and then the sales would get her a top 40. But she is probably getting 10-15k only a day sadly.

The good thing is any streams for the Initial Talk Remix will be added to those for the album version - both capped separately. So if Initial Talk Remix is doing, say, 15k a day, and the album version is doing 50k a day after the 10-streams-per-user-cap, then that's 65k a day streams.

Posted by: cqmerqn 24th February 2018, 11:53 PM

She has overtaken Dua Lipa on iTunes into 13th. Long step up now to 5 seconds and Ed etc..... 0.29 currently and needs 0.38ish. let's hope she can stay up there while Ant and Dec airs again at 1pm tomorrow

That’s quite the boost from SNT. It goes to show how accessible the song is, even if it is a little generic.

Completely different.

It is a shame though. Maybe the BBC should open its playlist additions up to the public vote. Although with our history, it'll Brexit our radio and leave us with the worst music in Europe kink.gif

Well sadly she got to number 2 in iTunes in week one and only managed 47th and that was with a few days of good streams..... She would have to reallysell consistent all week to get another place like that.

Interestingly she has another version coming out and I heard it was for Magic FM audience. https://dbr.ee/afKs not too different but a but more country.

See! Kylie and BMG need to ring Spotify and tell them to sort it out

Posted by: T Boy 25th February 2018, 10:09 AM

Again, I hate the sexism arguments. How come Madonna was having huge no.1s into her late 40s? How come Robbie Williams can’t get a hit in his 40s? It’s people choosing facts to support their argument rather than forming it from using all evidence.

Kylie isn’t connecting with the youth. She did for such a long time but nothing lasts forever. Even Pink, Who has shown amazing consistency through her career, isn’t catching on with the streaming audience despite the fact that she’s still being pushed for them on Radio.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 25th February 2018, 10:18 AM

They are not catching on because radio don't play and streaming is completely biased and a mess. It should be about 5000 streams per sale ratio. Silly I can just sit in a car and listen to a playlist of songs soemone has put together and it counts for a official singles chart.

Last year Kylie sold 100% song at 9.99 on Vinyl yet that sale counts the same as 150 streams on Spotify? Ludicrous to be honest.

Why have we had a whole Ed Sheeran album charting in singles chart

That’s the issue with streaming, it leaves the chart only representing a minority of the public in a major way. But there’s literally no point complaining about it because there’s no way we can go back now. Even if we did revert to a sales only chart, people would still call out inaccuracy because lots of people stream.

I wouldn’t let it bother you. Kylie will be putting out pleny of music for years to come. As long as you enjoy it, it shouldn’t matter if she doesn’t get high peaks. She has her market.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 25th February 2018, 10:31 AM

I ain't worried. But this Irrelevant thing is just not true..... It's the manipulation......

Kylie up to 12th. Ant and Dec airs again at 1pm so we could see at a big push be top 10 on iTunes again today and combined top 8? Will need to keep momentum though.

Rudimental playing live with Jess on Sunday Brunch soon so they may well topple Timberlake at the top of iTunes chart

Posted by: danG 25th February 2018, 10:41 AM

Let's just Agree that Kylie isn't irrelevant but her audience is more the older generation and her long time fans rather than teenagers and students. She's still doing well considering.

Posted by: SM351 25th February 2018, 11:01 AM

I just think they need to make ACR increase the stream ratio for a chart sale quicker than they do. Will at least allow people like Kylie a bit more exposure.

Posted by: Midge 25th February 2018, 11:13 AM

The week Kylie got to 47, there were still 8 songs on ACR above her.

Posted by: pes 25th February 2018, 11:20 AM

I always have thought they should apply the SAVE ON THE LIBRARY method.

I mean if radio play a song a lot..does not mean all the people that listen will buy that song.

So it should be on streaming..where basically the playlists are like the radios...but only if you save the song on your library or your own playlist it counts as a sale (or every 10 saves count like a sale)

2010 I like a song, I buy it
2018 I like a song, I save it on my streaming library

Posted by: cqmerqn 25th February 2018, 11:28 AM

Um no

Posted by: danG 25th February 2018, 11:31 AM

That will just open it up for easy chart manipulation ie boyband fans saving en masse in week one without making the effort to actually stream it. At least back in the day they had to actually part with cash to get their boyband an inflated first week chart position.

Posted by: T Boy 25th February 2018, 11:48 AM

We just need to accept what is. I don’t like the charts anymore but I’m over it.

The word manipulation is a harsh word. It seems to get rolled out in these boards too often as an excuse for why someone a poster doesn’t like is doing well and why their faves aren’t.

In order to chart highly, you basically have to target teenagers. I teach teenagers on a daily basis. I’ve heard Dancing. The majority of today’s teenagers won’t go for it and that’s why it doesn’t get airplay or appear on Spotify playlists. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad song and as long as it’s doing well with her demographic, i don’t see the harm.

Honestly, when Kylie was doing shit in 1997, was it because of chart manipulation?

He didn’t say they’d skip it because of her name though, just because of the track, which isn’t enticing to most teenagers.

Although, I think the Spotify audience is so passive, that a lot wouldn’t skip it.

Read T Boy's post from a teacher's perspective - one who teaches teenagers.

Rather rude to label me an 'obnoxious troll' for having formed an opinion different to yours - the obnoxious comment is yours! As I've already said I like Kylie but kids on the whole are going to be skipping her songs if they're on playlists. She's not what that demographic wants.

Posted by: JosephSprayberry 25th February 2018, 05:11 PM

As someone who also works with teenagers, most of the kids I talk to about music are fans of Drake, Ramz, J Hus, etc. That's not to say there aren't teenagers who'd be fans of Kylie though - I think a song like Dancing would have an audience amongst teenagers. It's not a million miles away from Anywhere and that was a streaming hit after all.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 25th February 2018, 05:14 PM

It's very easy to say that audience "don't care" or "can't connect" to her, but with the main commercial radio stations not playing her and it not being added to any of the key Spotify playlists, what chance does it even have of reaching out to them in the first place?

Posted by: ___∆___ 25th February 2018, 05:18 PM

Hope Kylie can get a further boost now that she’s Top 10 - the fact it’s 59p should also help keep it stable. Great result from 1 performance and I didn’t think it would make the iTunes Top 10 once let alone twice several weeks apart, just hope she can snatch 1 week Top 40 officially!

Brayden coming with the facts.

While aimed more to that demographic than say iTunes is these days...Y'all know that it's not only kids/teens who use Spotify right? Myself and all my friends are late twenties/early thirties and we all use Spotify (or Apple Music) and I'm pretty sure my parents use it too...Spotify is the main way of music consumption for most of the music-listening population now.

Anyway, I think the point is that a huge proportion of Spotify listeners listen to music/playlists very passively. A lot of the time without even probably knowing who they're listening to. Nobody was saying that Kylie would be the next Post Malone of streaming if added to playlists, but I doubt every single person, if they found themselves bopping to 'Dancing' and checked out who the artist would be like "Oh no, she's not relevant, I'd better not listen to this again'.

Posted by: ___∆___ 25th February 2018, 05:25 PM

^^ Without going off track too much, 99% of my music consumption is streaming however the majority of that is playlists, complications and the charts, I have to go out of my way to create playlists or look up artists I like when they release something new/are not featured on playlists which of course I do but so many songs get played and rack up sales from me because of where they are featured and the fact I use playlists for the gym, background music etc.,

Posted by: iain 25th February 2018, 05:31 PM

I’m actually surprised that Spotify aren’t actively marketing to a slightly older audience, including gearing some of the playlists towards them, it seems like huge untapped potential to me.

Dancing is so so generic sounding (basically sounds like a Kygo produced track) anyway so she and her management have tried her best to fit in with the current sound, and still it hasn't worked the best.

Maybe she would have been better going deep or tech house with a dance producer on board and appealing to that market!

the label should pay and have it added to hot hits on spotify, that's how it works when songs are non-spotify-esque
or do you think sam smith's too good at goodbyes was spotify-friendly? Sam smith is more Adult-oriented than anything
and total opposite of what people stream in spotify, he's the anti-drake, the anti-post malone

but his label got a deal with spotify and he was insta-added as song #1 on all imaginable playlists, of course hot hits and nmf,
and he even had a video... and of course the deal worked and got tons of streams
that's how you play the game and how you make sure you got a comeback

of course not all artist can get this kinda deal, but sure with a little investment, paying a few $$$ to spotify, something can be done

Posted by: Midge 25th February 2018, 06:07 PM

Sam Smith does have the hype behind him though; there were expectations that his comeback would get to number 1.

What happened to Emeli Sandé with the lead single from her 2nd album - I forget what it was even called?!

I think era 3 will really struggle for Sam.

Posted by: cqmerqn 25th February 2018, 06:49 PM

Yup, it’s clear that he won’t get a hit songle again from this album. He will need to rely on features I think.

Posted by: danG 25th February 2018, 06:58 PM

I reckon Sam is begging Disclosure to do another collab to give him a much needed hit single in-between eras. And it'll happen cos Disclosure really need the hit too.

Posted by: Scene 25th February 2018, 06:59 PM

Sam should get MK to remix an album track for single release - his remix of MOMM never gets old and he's bigger than ever right now. Sam needs an upbeat hit like Lana with SS.

Posted by: T Boy 25th February 2018, 07:08 PM

It’s only people, like Sam Smith, who are desperate for a hit single that have to buy a place on Spotify playlists.

Kylie’s Label could easily do it, but she and they are clearly not interested in getting a hit single. All of Kylie’s current promotion is in hope the album will sell well. Kylie has had more than enough top 10 hits between 1988 and 2011, she probably doesn’t care if she never gets another. She’s not in need of them to keep her career going. She did, once, but no longer.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 25th February 2018, 07:11 PM

Well kylie did a small advert I remember with Spotify
But never made any playlists so......
I do wonder if she has something else up her sleeve but doubt it.

She has more versions around to be released on Itunes and Spotify. Let's see.

She has her concerts in a few weeks which could generate interest and if some of her mixes like Anton Powers and Illyus and barrientos mixes get playlisted who knows. Problem is by them her sales from ituhes will be non existent

Dancing is so so generic sounding (basically sounds like a Kygo produced track) anyway so she and her management have tried her best to fit in with the current sound, and still it hasn't worked the best.

Maybe she would have been better going deep or tech house with a dance producer on board and appealing to that market!

Dancing is not generic at all. The song is a reflection of where she is as an artic. She is 30 years into her career and has nothing to prove to anyone.
She went through hell in 2016 and poured her heaet into this era and the music and was inspired by her surroundings. The country twang to Dancing lends itself to the lyics.
A tech house sound would not lend itself to a song about welcoming death. At all. She does not need to appeal to anyone.

Posted by: cqmerqn 25th February 2018, 07:40 PM

Dancing is a basic bop but I’m LIVING for it

Posted by: Joe. 25th February 2018, 07:48 PM

‘Dancing’ is the first Kylie song I’ve really enjoyed since ‘Slow’. I wouldn’t say it was that basic, though does have some ‘modern’ production elements, namely the drop on the post chorus instrumental, but it’s still quite an interesting song. The double meaning about death is quite beautiful, empowering and euphoric when you think about Kylie’s past.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 25th February 2018, 09:43 PM

Holding on to number 10 on Itunes nicely. 9th combined with the Initial Talk remix. Not going to go any higher and will probably drop but if it can stay top 30 for rest of week then top 100 chart position should be achievable

Both great but "Love At First Sight" slightly edges it from a whole host of tracks for me... her back catalogue (2000s onwards in particular) is filled with great pop tracks with that Kylie charm!

Posted by: mdh 25th February 2018, 11:16 PM

in all honesty, 'Dancing' is a genuinely refreshing take on modern tropical pop - it doesn't have the same, boring, drop reliant structure that most chart music has yet it still manages to sound like a well-crafted pop banger.

Posted by: Cody On Ice 25th February 2018, 11:17 PM

Let's just wait it out you guys. I think the additional promo has been able to generate more hype and something will happen. If she makes the top 40, then great. More exposure for the single.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 25th February 2018, 11:26 PM

Dancing still going well. Up to 8th combined ahead of Drake now. Pity he streams more in one day than she does in a year lol

Let's see if the 59p pricing keeps her up to 30 on Itunes for rest of week, doubtful but would be a nice bonus.

She needs around 9,000 units for top 40 so I doubt she will be anywhere near that but I think she could maybe do around 3.5k sales and 1k streams and make top 100

I think that artists such as Pink, Sam Smith, Taylor Swift, etc have all suffered from releasing their albums after releasing just one single from it. Their first single is a huge hit (mostly #1 or very popular anyway) but second singles come after the album don’t have anywhere near as much momentum or hype because fans have already listened to the songs. For example Beautiful Trauma, could’ve easily been a Top 10 hit if it was released before the albums release but because it was released after, many people had already bought/streamed the song on the album and so couldn’t support it to the extent they could What About Us. Exactly the same can be said about Sam Smith with Too Good... & One Last Song

'Love At First Sight' as a teenager discovering my way in this world is the song that made me a Kylie fan!

It's been the same ever since and I've been what could be described as a 'stan', but the 'I Was Gonna Cancel' video happened and that Christmas album happened. You are right in a lot of aspects, but I still find Dancing quite generic production wise, the country/electronic drop thing has been done loads recently by the likes of Kygo. As you say Kylie has nothing to prove and doesn't need her music to specifically appeal to an audience, so it is disappointing for me Dancing doesn't sound more different to pop music trends recently sad.gif

As for Kylie's best song 'On A Night like this' is definitely my favourite.

Posted by: pippa 26th February 2018, 04:26 PM

Kylie's Dancing is refreshing as there is no other song like it around in the charts at the moment.

As for Kylie's best song, i would have 5 standouts from her catalogue but it is a tough call between All The Lovers and Better The Devil You Know. Like others have posted, Kylie has nothing to prove, after 30 years of delivering hits she has her name cemented. For her to still be in the charts, releasing albums and singles, touring and receiving good tv promotion is a bonus. Her medley on SNT was 5 minutes of feel music and it also highlighted how down to earth she is, she seemed to have a great time performing the medley with Ant and Dec.

Because management team have used it as a selling point for for fans to have to buy the album bundles....

She has also done a Cd single + t-shirt offer or Australian Mardi Gras. You get the tshirt now but have to wait for the single. Makes money I guess.

She also has the remixes coming out week by week rather than in a bundle. So instead of a £1.49 or £1.99 bundle of 3/4 songs sheis keeping you 99p for each 😏

Posted by: Midge 27th February 2018, 09:39 AM

I think the marketing strategy for "Dancing" makes sense, while it sacrifices a higher peak position it will keep fans interest in the song right up until the album release with something new to grab each week. It should keep the song top 100 for a few weeks as there are enough fans to purchase each new remix each week.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 27th February 2018, 10:10 AM

Kylie started the drop on iTunes. Needed to sustain that momentum all week and the remix to hang around. Needed one more promo slit really and there isn't any other than tickets on sale tomorrow. The silly leak and early release cost. Her a top 40 hit.

Sigala and Paloma now up to 10, Kylie down to 12 sad.gif

Posted by: iain 27th February 2018, 10:18 AM

I mean the Kylie drop was inevitable. A big promo slot sends it into the top 10 for a couple of days, but no radio play means that it drops as soon as the promo impact wears off.

Posted by: Joe. 27th February 2018, 10:20 AM

Capital and Heart both supported Into The Blue, and I feel like Dancing is a bit more modern-radio friendly with more potential to hang around a bit, so it's a shame they've not given Dancing any support. I suppose it was inevitable though.

Or perhaps, she came over and did some promo? (Like someone has already stated)

Yes but promo or not getting top 50 on itunes just doesn't mean anything anymore was my point. People on this forum still hold far too much weight to getting into the top 50 on itunes singles chart.

50 downloads per day and you're top 100 on itunes, that's what it takes (not much)

I think we're coming from the perspective "Toni Braxton even selling 10 singles in 2018 is somewhat an achievement".

Go on Bebe, a star in the making even if it's taking time.

I'm not usually one to slate artists as each to their own but Lily Allen is really embarrasing herself. First with her Taking immagrants in crap (She didn't) and now this song.

Glad to see George Ezra getting a hit...... I wonder if his new album will even sell half the number of copies his last album has sold🤔😣

Posted by: Bjork 1st March 2018, 10:23 AM

half? he'd probably won't even do 1/10 (sadly)

Pretty sure 120k of his album is achievable now he's acquiring a decent sized hit from it.

Posted by: Bjork 1st March 2018, 10:38 AM

i mean, I can see him doing 100-ish K but don't think he can repeat the success of his debut or even do half of it
if even sam smith can only do 500k

Surprised this is still doing as well as it is. I believe it's top 20 when combined. Shame it isn't doing anything on streaming. Even if it was around #100 on spotify for a week it would likely manage a top 40 position.

After Don't Matter Now's performance never expected to see George top 10 on i-tunes again!

Posted by: SmileyKylie 1st March 2018, 03:51 PM

Kylie Dancing gone dark green again on last update and moved up from 19 to 17. Done really well this week. Another Illyus & Barrientos Club Mix coming tomorrow and a more commercial/mainstream country mix may also drop that seems to be playing on Heart FM

Kylie will probably sell more tomorrow than she did last Friday so could be another ok week for her. The 59p is helping to sustain it. They should drop both remixes to 59p too! If she can make the top 100 again next week I will be happy.

Hope Tongue becomes a hit!

Love George being top 10 if they reduce to 59p tomorrow then could climb a lot further

Posted by: Lomadz 1st March 2018, 10:09 PM

Is the Meghan Trainor song a proper single?

Posted by: cqmerqn 1st March 2018, 10:17 PM

Yes, it’s the lead single and it’s doing TERRIBLY.

Meghan's not a fanbase act either, NO took a few weeks to go top 40 and obviously Me Too didn't even make it close, so let's not set our expectations too high.
