Not here for that nosering tho laugh.gif

I'm hoping for an uptempo urban smash and she better bring it this era, not that halfarsed promo like Unapolegetic

Posted by: AdamAloud Aug 24 2014, 02:53 PM

I'm just craving new Rihanna so whether it's a ballad or a dance banger I don't care. Just GIMME!

Posted by: Heezus Aug 24 2014, 02:54 PM

All I hope is that it actually has a chorus and no trumpets. Ideally a banger like Only Girl and We Found Love.

Posted by: Rate Slayerrrrrr Aug 25 2014, 11:47 AM

Here for another mature song like Diamonds!

That will be a classic in a few years!

I'm good with anything as long as we get new Rihanna finally <3 would love something like Only Girl for the lead though.

I agree. Something as game-changing as those two songs were. OG definitely took Rihanna's career up a notch into superstardom (the whole Loud era did tbh) while WFL went stratospheric.

While I really like 'Diamonds', I was extremely underwhelmed by it at first. It was just very safe from an artist like Rihanna. I hope she doesn't follow the trumpet trend and makes her own lane. A reggae sound would be appreciated.

Posted by: Ryan. Aug 26 2014, 04:59 PM

I actually consider 'Diamonds' to be nearly as game-changing as the previous two lead singles as no-one expected Rihanna to come back with a massive ballad as no other pop girl had been releasing ballads as lead singles as far as I remember. Britney had 'Hold It Against Me', Lady Gaga had 'Born This Way', Katy had 'California Girls', Taylor had 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together', Beyoncé had 'Run The World', Pink had 'Blow Me' and so on. So to come back with a ballad in the way Rihanna did was very unexpected I think!

Posted by: *Tim Aug 26 2014, 05:10 PM

I think Diamonds is what got her a #1 album in the US tbh.
I was hugely underwhelmed by the song at first but it grew on me massively and I consider it a RiRi classic now, something that cannot be said for Stay

Posted by: Liаm Aug 26 2014, 05:16 PM

Stay is one of her best wub.gif

I loved Diamonds from listen #1 too! I agree it was a bold move to lead with a ballad, but she did that with Russian Roulette too. I think along with Beyoncé she's one of the artists who can really work a ballad lead single (Best Thing I Never Had and If I a Were A Boy), I wouldn't mind something like Diamonds or Stay at all! I'd be very disappointed if it was along the lines of the trumpet trend, but it could be anything from that to trap like Dark Horse to a club banger, Rihanna is just someone you can't really predict!

Posted by: *Tim Aug 26 2014, 05:24 PM

I'm hoping for some Afrobeats kink.gif

Posted by: Rate Slayerrrrrr Aug 26 2014, 05:25 PM

She is probably the most versatile pop bad biatch out there.

Posted by: luk≡ Aug 26 2014, 06:42 PM

i hope it's 'we found love' meets 'only girl' (wouldn't mind something similar to 'diamonds' or 'rated r' singles/album though <3)

and thanks Cremey for posting that photo. stunning.

Yeah she's do so many types, from Hard (hate it) to dance to U Da 1 from We Found Love, to adult contemporary, Diamonds and Stay (when all the world was tryna be Adele though HA - reductive peers), that she can release ANYTHING now. She refused to be ppigeonholed like the Spices.

Posted by: Davidson Aug 26 2014, 07:33 PM

I would prefer something a little bit more urban to be a lead single smash. And I mean more 'Drunk In Love' than 'Pour It Up' urban, take note Rih.

Posted by: *Tim Aug 26 2014, 07:37 PM

I'd definately be here for that.

Ideally it'd be a pop song with urban flavours. Get a lil' ratchet Ri!

Posted by: Cremey Aug 29 2014, 06:43 AM

I had a dream last night that I was listening to this for the first time and it featured Missy Elliott and RiFF RaFF!
I need to get a life sad.gif

I also seemed to be in Tutankhamun's tomb?! So if the video has some kind of Egyptian theme I will be thoroughly creeped out.

Posted by: *Tim Aug 29 2014, 08:11 AM

You better not be a fortune teller or something because I'm not here for Riff Raff

Posted by: Acoustic Aug 29 2014, 11:36 AM

I'd love another Diamonds like lead single.
Although looking at the producers she's worked with I think it'll have a more urban sound. I can't wait.

Posted by: mr_aly Aug 29 2014, 11:40 AM

I hate 'Diamonds' with every fibre of my being, I hope it's at least better than that.

Posted by: *Tim Sep 9 2014, 09:57 PM

Ri is apparantly shooting the video for the single
Her best friend has been posting pictures from a set and both Ri's hairdresser and stylist flew in to LA on the same day her friend started posting these pictures.

The stylist also has a PA for Rihanna bussiness only, who is in LA too. This is of course all speculation going on on the internet right now, but it seems very likely to me that she is indeed shooting the video before the song even has been mentioned like she did during Loud

Posted by: Cremey Sep 9 2014, 10:37 PM

I hope that's true, need this NOW.

What if she drops her single in time to chart in the last chart of 2014 and it goes to number 1 officially in the UK and she keeps her "#1 every year" record going?! w00t.gif (It won't happen though unforch! drama.gif)

on what basis makes you think she'll do a new year announcement.

at this rate we might as well pull out any old holiday. i think she will go for an ash wednesday launch myself.

Posted by: ░░░░ Dec 31 2014, 03:33 PM

in all seriousness though, she's releasing an entire concept album as the score to that rubbish looking 'drive' film and that's out in march so i can't really see her releasing anything before that as it's just a total clash of interests. apparently the album won't be based around cars rather songs that compliment moments in the film. it will either be fabulous or utterly awful.

then a mega summer jam would be perfect tbh *.*

i'm hoping rihanna either starts the trends once again or jumps on the alt-R&B train and takes it somewhere incredible [if she worked with gesaffelstein / arca etc !]

Posted by: Liаm Jan 2 2015, 05:22 PM

^ omg yes that would be a brilliant sound! I'd not mind some Kygo-esque tropical house from her either maybe if she's gonna be setting trends, since that hasn't really taken off in the mainstream yet.

That's not a neccesarily new single tho. It's just a song with writing credits for Florence.

I think it's the song used in the R8 Experience as people were tweeting A Night, which is the title of the song registered.
Rumours are flying that it samples Florence's song If Only For A Night

I'mDEAD excited now tho

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 20 2015, 02:33 PM

Ew. No Florence please puke.gif

I can deal if it's just sampling the track or something as long as Florence's shrieky and warbly vocals are away from this.

Posted by: Robot Jan 25 2015, 02:07 AM

It's alright, I'd file it under "nice" which isn't really I come for when I hear there's new Rihanna. Her voice sounds good on it though and it's at least nice to hear some new material from her even if I'm not particularly fussed about it.

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 25 2015, 02:12 AM

WELL AND TRULY SLAYED! <3

Something so different, yet again. Looking forward to the proper single (if this is indeed only a promo single!)

Not surprised you love the cover, instantly thought of you when I saw it as it reminds me of something you'd create for the CD Cover thing we had on this forum (which were always absolutely stunning btw.)

Posted by: Liаm Jan 25 2015, 03:15 AM

This is lovely <3 Her voice really shines on a raw acoustic track like this. I doubt it's the single though and I'd rather it wasn't, not commercial at all.

Posted by: ░░░░ Jan 25 2015, 04:02 AM

i think it's bloody awful. feels very smug like it belongs on a television advert or some such. it's struggle to look at the mccartney-rihanna-kanye triad as much more than superstar posturing; the cover art certainly feeds into that.

i assume on the how it's being spun that this is a non-album single.

Posted by: ♡ Heezus Froot ♡ Jan 25 2015, 07:51 AM

Dear Lord, what a banger.

Posted by: April Jan 25 2015, 08:36 AM

Well that's certainly unexpected to say the least!

Posted by: Cremey Jan 25 2015, 09:54 AM

Unsurprisingly loving this. Love how it's something completely different for her again (+ Kanye is obviously always a big plus).
So good to have something new, she sounds incredible.

And like Jark says, the artwork is wonderful.

Posted by: *Tim Jan 25 2015, 10:14 AM

She sounds absolutely amazing! The song is not something I wouldexpect for a Rih lead single but it's good.

Apparantly according to The Rolling Stone this is a Kanye single that'll most likely end up on Kanye's album and could possibly also end up on R8 but I don't think this is the actual lead single.
Still waiting for official confirmation before I change titles/merge threads

Posted by: Atonement Jan 25 2015, 10:16 AM

Well this is awful.

First I had one of those YT links whose song had been replaced with an instrumental of something but it started really good so I was hopeful. Then I realized it wasn't real *cries*.

But yeah, this ain't good but then I usually only live for her singles so as long as those are bangers.

Posted by: ░░░░ Jan 25 2015, 10:17 AM

i think this is quite clearly a kanye single given the fact that he's worked with paul mccartney on much of his new album, also rihanna's team would never launch the lead single from an album 2.5 years in the making with a silent release of a song on a sunday with the same unusual pairing as a single first premiered a week or so ago (kanye/paul)

what basis are people calling this her single? the fact her name comes first on the itunes credit? that's no proof at all...

Posted by: *Tim Jan 25 2015, 10:20 AM

The fact that her website are advertising it caused a lot of confusing + her tweeting about "her new music" with a snippet of this

Posted by: ░░░░ Jan 25 2015, 10:26 AM

i guess it's just because it's the first time she's been in the spotlight for some time / connecting up the social media for biggest impact

Posted by: Cremey Jan 25 2015, 11:07 AM

I saw somewhere that it's supposedly on hers and Kanye's albums, which would make sense.
Won't be the lead single though.

Posted by: HausofKubrick Jan 25 2015, 11:30 AM

The song WILL feature on both Kanye's upcoming album and R8. As Cremey says, i doubt it's her official lead single, but it does apparently give a feel of what the rest of the album will sound like. I think they're treating it as Kanye's second single though?

(i've made a thread in Urban not to divert attention, but because it is his single too and most likely just an album track for her)

Posted by: ░░░░ Jan 25 2015, 11:38 AM

"a feel for what the rest of the album will be like"? based on the producers mentioned i can't quite picture the likes of dj mustard and paul epworth getting their acoustic guitar on.

please rihanna we don't need an ed sheeran tribute ;(

Posted by: jark Jan 25 2015, 12:10 PM

There are rumours the DJ Mustard stuff was scrapped and the direction of the album u-turned completely. Also rumours it won't be out for months yet. We'll see...

Posted by: ░░░░ Jan 25 2015, 12:18 PM

well either way i think going in an ed sheeran direction would be a total misstep. i don't know who that would really appeal to?

riri does like her red herrings, we shall see...

I imagine these are true tho. I;ve eard rumours about grammy releases/superbowl releases but Home is coming in around March so I highly doubt they'd release 2 Rihanna albums so close to each other

Posted by: Acoustic Jan 25 2015, 02:34 PM

I wasn't really a fan of 'Unapologetic' and am left feeling a bit cold about this but this is a bit of a ridiculous statement given she is only 26. I know she is already 7 albums into her career but lots of pop icons release a lot of albums and seeing as she is so young and is such a massive star, I don't see why she shouldn't release something closer to 27 albums, re-inventing herself many times along the way. I hope so anyway.

It's 'FourFiveSeconds' without spaces. It's very important.

Also, the song is so dull.

I wish I could have an OMG NEW RIRI I AM SLAIN reaction but this isn't really the comeback I was hoping for.

Her vocals make it better than Only One at least, hopefully it grows on me as it doesn't exactly sound instant.

Posted by: Joe. Jan 26 2015, 09:47 AM

This is such a let down on every level. I'm failing to see anything positive about this track. I hope this isn't representative of the rest of the upcoming album.

Close to debuting on both Urban and Rhytmic as well

And the song is growing on me immensely as well! Just like Diamonds did in the end

Posted by: Jay ジ Jan 27 2015, 07:16 AM

This is failing to grow on me. sad.gif If anything it's getting more annoying. The lyrics are terrible... that's possibly the most offensive thing about the song. The demo like production draws more attention to the lyrics too, and they're just not worth hearing.

Ready for the next single, wake me up when it arrives!

Posted by: Joe. Jan 27 2015, 07:30 AM

Just compare this to 'We Found Love' lead single...or 'Only Girl'

Posted by: AdamAloud Jan 27 2015, 09:59 AM

I can understand people being disappointed with it but I absolutely love it. One thing about Rihanna is you never know what she's going to do. It's a style I never thought she'd do nor suit it at that, but it's still somehow very Rihanna.

Regarding the artwork, I like it and it does look very 'cool' but Paul McCartney looks so out of place it hurts to look at. He really did not need a credit.

Lead singles:
1. "We Found Love"
2. "Umbrella"
3. "Only Girl (in the World)"
4. "Diamonds"

4. Pon de Replay

7. We Found Love
8. FourFiveSeconds

(9. Take a Bow - but I wouldn't really consider this a lead).

I'm not entirely sure what I think about it. I mean it's good but it's so not Comeback worthy and defo not Rihanna good music worthy. On the other hand it's #2 on iTunes so it must be liked a little bit at least.

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 27 2015, 03:35 PM

It's brilliant. I LOVE how raw it is. Her vocals are great on it! I agree in that as a lead single it's perhaps not strong enough and doesn't make enough of a statement, but as a song I can't help but love it! The melody is incredible!

'Russian Roulette' and 'Umbrella' are always switching places. Both outstanding though. I can see FFS overtaking 'Diamonds' shortly too! I don't hate OG(ITW) it's just a very "7/10" generic, dance pop song. Everything else above though wub.gif She has some stellar lead singles.

Kinda surprised at the lukewarm reaction here, I actually like it quite a lot and I wouldn't call myself a big Rihanna fan. I think it's good that she releases something completely out of the blue and it's an acoustic track that isn't what anyone expected rather than a standard Calvin Harris produced club song. You definitely can't call her predictable.

I'd be surprised if this style is all she has for us though, she'll have something bigger up her sleeve later on I'm sure.

Posted by: *Tim Jan 28 2015, 01:45 PM

I'm certain on that as well. The song she posted a snippet of, Kiss It Better or something like that, does NOT suond like it could fit on an album full of FourFiveSeconds

01 We Found Love
02 Diamonds

Top two are amongst my favourites of all time. Everything is brilliant tbf although Only Girl was very 'of the time' wasn't it? Loved it back in 2010 though!

Posted by: Iz~ Feb 3 2015, 10:16 PM

Face it though, what more success does she need? She's already broken her way into that 'untouchable' level of future legend status assured, she won't have hits forever but while she can, why not do things a little different? That's why I'm especially pleased she came back with this, particularly as I would have just forgotten about the song if it was on a level with Rita Ora and doing the same sort of things that other female pop artists are doing. I'm actually really interested in Rihanna again now, and I thought this might have been the era where I left her behind. It's a fantastic artistic statement for me.

02 Umbrella

Diamonds is pretty bad but I am starting to like it very slowly, four five seconds is very good but I have ink heard it once as I don't think it is on spotify and Pom de replay is also very good. The other 6 are all amazing moments though. We found love is great albeit a bit overrated, SOS and only girl are fantastic tunes and take a bow is beautiful. Umbrella is a classic. Russian roulette is just absolutely stunning and one of the best songs of all time wub.gif

The video is great.

^ omg yes that would be a brilliant sound! I'd not mind some Kygo-esque tropical house from her either maybe if she's gonna be setting trends, since that hasn't really taken off in the mainstream yet.

This aged badly kink.gif

Absolutely deserved. I still go back to this a lot. A FIRM RiRi fave of mine heart.gif It's sales are surprising though. Remember when everyone was saying "this is a flop"? laugh.gif

I love this now but at the time it came out I wasn’t so keen.

I think it only made #7 in my personal chart but I now prefer it to some stuff what made #1.

It’s definitely her single I done the biggest U turn on though and it’s one of her best vocal performances live too.

I still hate this song so much.

It’s so bad, if pretty much anyone else had released this it would have flopped big time, its only sold that well because its Rihanna.

It's not like Bitch Better Have My Money & American Oxygen became huge hits...

I think especially with BBHMM it's a LOT bigger and known than the chart position leads you to believe. Had the video come out sooner it would have been a Top 10 I think.
