QUOTE
Desperate to know the Top 10 best-selling singles of 2007?

Going Gaga at the thought of never finding out how many songs with “bad”or “romance”in the title have hit Number 1?

Need Katy Perry’s singles’ sales, like, yesterday?!

Well, you’re in luck, because we’re here to scratch that inquisitive charty itch.

The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that OfficialCharts.com got our hair did earlier this year, with a new improved definitive Official Chart archive that gives you even more info on your fave artists and the big hits you love.

Week by week chart positions for every chart single ever, peak positions, weeks on chart, dedicated hubs for every artist that has ever charted in the UK, career tallies –it’s all there (you read more about how to get the most out of our archive here).

We’re now going to open our doors to you lot for a brand new feature – Ask Official Charts. It’s pretty simple, ask us anything you want to know about the Official Charts, the songs, the chart feats, and the stars who make it happen.

It’s time to pop the question! Ask! Us! Anything!

Send your questions to editorial@officialcharts.com, hit us up on Facebook or talk to us on Twitter using the #AskOfficialCharts hashtag. From the weird to the wonderful, we’re looking for the pop stuff you’ve been curious to know, because we’ve most likely got the answer!

Plus if we pick yours, you’ll get your answer right here on OfficialCharts.com, plus a little something extra…

Some terms-type stuff: We won’t be able to pick every question that comes in, nor can we answer them individually. By writing in/tweeting us with your question, you are giving us permission to publish it on OfficialCharts.com and other outlets. If you don’t want your name to be published, please let us know when asking your question. If more than one person asks the same question, we may only credit one of those people.

Not sure if this has been mentioned anywhere. It's probably worth all of us trying our luck and asking them anything we really want to know, and if they do reply, please do share the answer in this thread. biggrin.gif

I saw that earlier and it looks like it could be useful, especially if they're willing to give sales totals! Thought it was exclusive to Twitter, which I don't have, so glad to see that we can ask via Facebook or email as well.

One thing I bet they won't answer.
A list of the records that were removed from the charts any week for not having genuine sales.

Would love to know this! Maybe if enough of us ask!

A list of the million selling albums (or at least of the 21st century) would be nice!

Posted by: Jester May 25 2015, 09:17 PM

Well, I asked.

Posted by: Nick F1 May 25 2015, 09:36 PM

I have asked for Britney sales, esp if we can get album sales kink.gif

The OCC seem to be a lot less willing to give album sales than they are with singles sales which is annoying as I find albums much more interesting!

Posted by: Nick F1 May 25 2015, 10:00 PM

well they have got emails from Britney fans for album sales so they better give us info!

Posted by: Gambo May 26 2015, 12:21 PM

This almost sounds a little too good to be true doesn't it pop-pickers?! I think the key to managing our expectations appropriately on this one is the disclaimer regarding their selective approach to responses - one has to surmise that they knew they'd be getting inundated with innumerable different queries from chart enthusiasts, and so made sure there was no legitimate expectation that everyone's question will get an answer. I think we may find that specific sales-related queries, or those asking for too much detail such as lists of 'starred-out' entries etc, will fall on deaf ears and they will probably just conveniently ignore these and other 'difficult' issues, including those around the various inaccuracies/inconsistencies we've all spotted over the years. That said I completely agree that if nothing's ventured nothing can be gained, so it's worth a punt. I do hope they'll surprise us all with their responsiveness and candour!

I do think a good lead question would be to ask for a list of million-sellers to date that excludes all streaming-derived 'sales' though; I think that info would be easy for them to mine and I can't see a substantive reason as to why they'd object, other than I suppose to protect the idea among the wider public of the streaming-inclusive seven-figure sums being "official".

They already do that - all sales info they give out on their website excludes streams.

Really? I had always thought that all official sales-to-date figures - for singles anyway - were now inclusive of audio stream equivalents. I'll have to investigate this, though I hope you're right...

Posted by: mr_aly May 28 2015, 09:18 PM

Is there a time limit on this, or is it an ongoing thing?

I assume that will depend on how it goes. If they are inundated with unreasonable requests, it will be quietly dropped. If they get a lot of sensible requests, it could last a long time. With that in mind, I would advise against asking for a list of the best-selling songs recorded on a Thursday afternoon in September.

Some sale totals may include streams but not for the million-sellers, which is good, although it'd be nice if they revealed when songs passed 1m with streams included as well.

On a similar note, I wonder when album totals/overall album market figures that MW give out will start including streams. They said they would do it at some point but it's been a while now.

Yes all of mine about The biggest British female artists rolleyes.gif

So they're only going to answer questions which they can spend 5 seconds looking for in their data base. :/ Ah well, nice to see 'Something New' on 180k.

If their database is comprehensive enough, there are a lot of questions which can be answered without too much effort.

Oh wow, surprised Leona has the most top 3s! Hope she can hold onto that record but I don't think she will. Looks like a lot of British female artists will surpass 12 top 10s and overtake Shirely and Petula. Jessie J's on 10, right behind Emeli Sandé and Leona has 9. It's quite amazing to me how low that number of top 10s is. To think there are many non-british artists with many many more.

haven't they blacklisted you due to "threatening behaviour" over a "sustained period" going back to the early 80s?

you shouldn't be so surprised tbh...

Jake hen, that's very slanderous x

Posted by: Heathyheath_ May 31 2015, 07:47 AM

I found it interesting that they don't count Bastille's Pompeii as a million seller because it's only over a million on combined sales. I guess that means the likes of Love Me Like You Do and Take Me To Church will have a bit to go for official one million selling status

Furthermore, using the Best Selling Albums of the Decade list, Alicia Keys The Element of Freedom has finally passed 1m (well, should be on 1,003k so quite a while ago). Also, a few weeks ago, Snow Patrol passed 1m with Up to Now.

Would be good if they could squeeze out a Top 40 of Britney's best sellers as that would show what her best selling album tracks are too.

If anyone wants to do a comparison, this was the last (Top 20) best sellers list they gave for Britney, from December 2013: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/britney-spears-official-top-10-biggest-selling-singles-revealed__3586/
