I trace back Madonna falling out of UK public favour around the same time she divorced from Guy and moved out of the country. She was everywhere, promoting on TV shows and constantly in the press. I don't think the UK ever saw Madonna as "one of our own" but it seemed like everything she said or did was of interest to the media and the public. By the time of her next album, MDNA, there was next to no promotion in the UK (aside the Graham Norton Show, which was more for W.E.) and it feels like any media attention Madonna has received since has been largely negative. There's obviously other factors at play, but could there be a correlation between where Madonna was based and her popularity? If she remained in the UK, would she be more in favour with the public?

BuzzJack Idol Joined: 8 December 2010 Posts: 50,917 User: 12,472	I just rewatched the Madonna & Guy: Where Did It All Go Wrong documentary that aired on something like Channel 5 and it got me thinking about it. The way the gossip magazine journalists talk about the marriage and divorce, practically foaming from the mouth, I just can't imagine them getting excited about anything Madonna would do nowadays. 4Rpfh2AE-JE Probably doesn't help that Madonna went very quite following the wrap up of the S&S Tour, obviously busy writing and directing W.E. too. Then we get the massive news of the Superbowl which Madonna and her team fail to capitalise on by having no other musical promotion, expecting the music to hold up on its own when it was too weak to do so. Promo was better for Rebel Heart but it was far too late by then and the BRITs fall was unfortunately painted as a joke by many. So yeah, there are many factors at play, but I just wonder what might have happened if Madonna's marriage had survived or she at least remained in the UK. I'm not at all suggesting that she should have done, of course, just curious. Like, had she not have met and married Guy at all, would her popularity in the UK have lasted as long as it did?

Can you remember the Madonna steals baby , Madonna cheats system .... This was the beginning of it for me . Then she turned 50 Then she started realising songs like GMAYL

BuzzJack Idol Joined: 8 December 2010 Posts: 50,917 User: 12,472	I was too young to really remember the adoption stuff or indeed anything about Madonna's divorce, it's only with hindsight that I'm able to recognise these things and notice what could have been possible factors in Madonna's declining popularity with the media. I feel like there was a shift around 2009-11 time with regards to radio and who they'd be willing to play. Like, previously it was pretty common to see acts in their 40s, 50s and 60s still be playlisted by mainstream radio, but this period saw lots of big acts getting phased out due to their age and radio deciding it meant they were no longer relevant. This threads kinda me thinking out loud, as I say I can notice these things with hindsight but it's not the same as being aware of it at the time.
