Nearly time to hear brand new version of Robbie Williams' hit Angels

The wait is nearly over to see a brand new version of the Robbie Williams' hit song Angels.

The powerful song, which has brought a tear to many eyes, over the years is set to once again take centre stage as a thank you to key workers on Staffordshire Day.

Volunteers across the county have pulled out their cameras and warmed up their vocal cords to sing the 1997 classic.

Now, there is not long to wait to hear the finished version as it is set to premiere on YouTube tomorrow, Friday, May 1 - and it could well feature some faces that you know.

Earlier this month, tourism group Enjoy Staffordshire, with the help of Staffordshire County Council, asked people to record themselves singing the tune and email it in.

The entries have now been edited into one video, dedicated to the thousands of NHS staff, carers, armed forces personnel, delivery drivers, supermarket workers, farmers, emergency services staff and other "angels" who are keeping the county going.

Its debut is part of this year's online-only Staffordshire Day programme, which will also features poetry readings, art classes, cooking demonstrations, talks and live music.

The big day has taken the form of being online this year as the country remains on lockdown due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

The main man himself, Robbie Williams, and his management team at IE Music, gave Enjoy Staffordshire the permission needed to use the hit.

Robbie Williams is one of Staffordshire's own after being born and raised in Burslem, Stoke on Trent and stays in touch with his roots, including being a Port Vale Football Club fan.

Staffordshire Day will feature a programme of arts and crafts sessions, poetry, music and demonstrations all online this year due to coronavirus. Usually a series of events take place at venues across the county to mark the annual day.

It will be the fifth annual county day and will begin with a puppet show on Josiah Wedgwood – who established his world-famous ceramics firm in the county on May 1, 1759. There will also be story-telling from the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum, Lichfield.

Families will be able to watch arts and crafts activities, including Staffordshire Libraries Pyjamarama sessions from 11am to 4pm, a drawing workshop for children with artist Eleanor Heath, and a Staffordshire Hoard-inspired embroidery class with Cheslyn Hay textile artist Katherine Keatley.

There will be poetry reading from the county's poet laureate Mel Wardle Woodend, including a new poem written specifically for Staffordshire Day. There will also be The Rattlebag Poetry Challenge with Stafford-based poet Ingrid Wagner.

People will be able to hear music from from Stafford band Naked Sunday and Yarnfield singer Lauren May and there will be a cooking demonstration from chef Cris Cohen on making Staffordshire's sourdough oatcakes. A talk on politics and activism from Staffordshire Youth Union will also be online.

And a live webinar, hosted by Staffordshire University, will give small and micro0businesses practical tips for surviving the coronavirus lockdown.

A family disco, and a themed quiz from Staffordshire branch of Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) will bring the day to a close.

For animal lovers, a live stream from Trentham Monkey Forest will reveal why the monkeys came to Staffordshire.

"We have a great programme of events and activities which you can enjoy from your sofa, and there is something for everyone, from creative fun for the children to cooking demonstrations and performances from talented local musicians.
