Hey, what's up, hello. This is the part where I'd say I'm also waiting for the 2022 EOY but I'm actually not. ARIA posted it this morning. I shall complete last year's thread when I get the time.

It's the big Christmas week, only to be surpassed with next year whose tracking week is more favourable for this sort of thing. Maybe then we'll see a changing of the guard because the big news is that seemingly Brenda Lee's streams have been cleaned up. Every year she gets undercounted because the song's streams are split between two different recordings, but in actuality, she gets higher streaming numbers than Mariah Carey on Spotify when you put them together (though she's a bit behind on Apple). She's also aided by a generally American trend for this year's Christmas affairs, where a lot of the Britons and Paul Kelly lag behind a bit this time, although The Pogues do get a new peak. Nat King Cole is the big winner for getting two new entries in the top 50, as well as anyone who wants a particularly holly jolly Christmas, with Michael Buble & Burl Ives both having massive new peaks for that song. Watch the space next week for a big climb for RAYE & 070 Shake who are #2 combined on Spotify yesterday. Tiesto & Tate McRae have also been highly blessed by the Hot Hits Australia gods, so now are looking at making a big impression next week.

Is this the first time The Pogues have made the top 50? Feels very strange seeing that chart outside the UK and Ireland!

It also made the top 50 in 2019 & 2021 (2020 was an unfavourable tracking week, but was possibly its best performance) and it's been making the Spotify top 100 every year since 2015, so I'd say it's established Christmas canon here.

It's easy to want to say this is the week that everything resets back to normal but I disagree. New Year's Eve lingers strongly on this particular tracking week, to the extent that it probably decided the #1 single this week! I have to believe that "Kill Bill" performed best on six of the seven tracking days, but "Unholy" was among various songs that vaulted strongly on December 31st and that's enough to get it back to #1. "I'm Good (Blue)" was actually back to #1 on Spotify on that day, while Eliza Rose, LF System, "Cold Heart" and "Levitating" among others had significant boosts then. RAYE scores her first ever top 10 single ("You Don't Know Me" got to #12). Between this, "golden hour" and the imminent arrival of "ceilings" to a Spotify chart near you, it's been a good time for songs I like belatedly becoming hits. One to watch next week is "Until I Found You" which is soaring up next week. Tiësto also arrives in the top 50 this week and looks to stick the landing and keep climbing next week. It is a particularly drab time for Australian music as we only have two in the top 50 (and only two compilations in the albums chart!), I have to highlight that the big new hope being plugged on Hot Hits Australia is "You Were Right", a RÜFÜS DU SOL hit from back in 2015 when they were still called RÜFÜS. It's #2 on the playlist for no explainable reason but it's also probably getting pretty close to the ARIA top 50 so maybe it'll work??

"Midnights" keeps racking up weeks at #1, it's now up to 9. SZA is currently stuck at #2 on both charts, and though I strongly suspect it won't be the case next week, I think she has the second most #2's across both charts without a #1 to her name, behind Radiohead's 6 (or if you will, Thom Yorke's 7), SZA has three #2 singles and one #2 album. Otherwise this week's chart can be seen as a preview for the 2023 EOY albums chart, because I believe 47/50 of last year's equivalent chart made the cut, and I think there's a case to be made for basically every album on this week's chart to pull it off too.

Good to see Escapism climb into the top 10. Will be interesting to see if it can get to #1 like it did in the UK.

I approve of any sort of payola that gives RÜFÜS DU SOL a hit tbh. Good song choice (was a top 5 hit in BJSC 5 years ago, though not quite as good as their other BJSC top 5 hit 'Innerbloom').

Oh I should clarify that "You Were Right" is already a hit, it got to #22 and is 6 times platinum. I think maybe it's the 2nd highest certified Australian dance hit only behind "Never Be Like You"(!) (and "Innerbloom" is doing alright at triple platinum)

The US & UK are having other ideas but in Australia SZA gets her first ever #1 single with "Kill Bill". She sets a new bar for low pure sales at #1 since radio is largely not getting on board (although triple j just added the track this week), but given that I've scarcely ever seen the song in the iTunes top 100, I hesitate to think it's even sold 50 copies yet, which is pretty unprecedented and also not a diss. Anyway we'll get a new #1 next week because "Flowers" has more than twice as many streams on Spotify currently so Miley Cyrus will probably be getting her first solo #1, ruining a trivia question I wrote last year in the process. Despite this, RAYE should be able to climb to #3 next week as the sped up version has gotten a huge boost in the past week. Stephen Sanchez climbs a lot but also fell a lot on Spotify in the past week which might drop him a few spots on the chart and not at all give hint to this bizarre trajectory through these weekly snapshots. Our first new hit song of 2023 comes from Skrillex, Fred again.. & Flowdan. It's the first time Fred again.. has been credited as a performer on a chart entry, though obviously he has produced multiple #1 hits in the past. In classic ARIA dealings, there is no Miguel or Hotel Ugly on the chart. Next week they're both threatening the top 20 but ARIA's midweeks released today don't mention either of them so who knows. Also "Riptide" by Vance Joy is higher on Spotify than it has been in about 7 years (it got to #17 the other day), while also still being nestled in the top 20 on Apple so like what even is this week's chart.

"Midnights" is #1 for a 10th week, which overtakes "1989" as Taylor Swift's longest reigning #1 to date. With seemingly nothing to stop her next week, 11 looks likely. "AM" reaches its equal highest point outside of its debut week, and has also now been in the top 10 for 4 weeks in a row, which is its longest continuous span ever (actually it's only spent 10 weeks ever in the top 10 despite the longevity). Arctic Monkeys are in the country at the moment and so is Elton John who might leap ahead next week, I've often spotted "Diamonds" at #1 on iTunes albums lately.

Miley Cyrus finally achieves a long sought milestone of having charted higher as a lead artist than her brother as "Flowers" gets to #1 easily. ARIA are reporting that this is her first #1 hit but it's not true as they themselves went out of their way to credit her on The Kid LAROI's "WITHOUT YOU" on the week it hit #1 (and every week since). Incidentally this big new entry renewing extra interest in her catalogue makes it one of the few weeks that's justified as it's certainly responsible for "WITHOUT YOU" returning to the top 20 Australian tracks chart. In case you were wondering, "Flowers" has the 3rd highest daily Spotify total for a song not associated with Christmas. The highest of these still belongs to "drivers license" which happened around the auspicious time of triple j's Hottest 100 where Glass Animals were somewhat unlucky to have their strongest week stuck behind a monster, though they would eventually get to #1 in the long run. What I'm saying is that this is probably not a going concern for Miley Cyrus but it's interesting that no matter what happens on the weekend, we have to accept that we're not getting an absolute game-changer unless people really get Stephen Sansick of "Flowers" in the next few days. I'm also labouring this point because thanks to ARIA's scrutiny and lack thereof, there isn't much else to talk about this week. Hotel Ugly are still missing from the chart, Vance Joy is still missing (although he's lost a decent amount of steam on Spotify so it's not as egregious now), and Miguel is still missing. Today's midweeks at least ensure "Sure Thing" is debuting next week, what a terrible system. We do have a debut for Taeyang & Jimin, which is surely a beneficiary of YouTube being included in the chart, which if nothing else has expanded K-Pop's prospects in the past 10 months as the song never even touched the Spotify top 200. To update the pitiful state of Australian music support, Hot Hits Australia just updated today and only 8 out of 50 songs are 'Australian', which includes the generous inclusion of "Love Lost" and "Sway My Way". At this point you have to wonder if "LET GO" is so high on the list because Passenger used to live in Australia.

At this point you might wonder what the last album to spent the 11 weeks at #1 "Midnights" has managed. The answer is of course "÷" which managed 27 weeks at #1, so it'll be a while before it's worth updating progress on that front. Arctic Monkeys come within spitting distance of a new peak for their latest album which is interesting because "AM" actually sold more vinyl this week than "The Car", and certainly got more streams. There's only one debut this week and it's a first time entry for Australian country singer Duncan Toombs. Next week's midweeks only note a potential debut for Mĺneskin, who have never charted on the album chart before, or indeed at all outside of those two songs.

What's with the rise for 'The Car' then? thinking.gif

Glad to see 'Kill Bill' got #1 in Australia since Miley is likely putting paid to its chances of ever getting there in the US (or the UK) now.

Arctic Monkeys have been in the country recently! Might couple up with backlogged copies being shipped I guess.

Not much to note at the top of the chart, there's only one position swap in the top 10. "Flowers" is not slowing down very much so there's no competition in sight. Well, there was a competition recently, namely triple j's Hottest 100 which despite feeling like the Spacey Jane and Fred again.. show, looks to be most beneficial here for Flume and Eliza Rose next week. "Say Nothing" originally peaked and debuted at #16 but looks to vault back into the top 50, perhaps into the top 5 next week. It could also help for one last roll of the dice for Luude to hit the top 50 with "Big City Life" because I kid you not, the last Australian song to enter the top 50 was Joji's "Die For You" back in early November. Anyway, Tiesto's Hottest 200 entry "10:35" vaults up into the top 15, behind a new arrival of Miguel's "Sure Thing" which apparently moved zero units last week, crazy. There's a quite high debut for Sabrina Carpenter which is her first top 50 entry although she did make the top 100 about 2 years ago with that song about gaslighting a literal child whom lives rent free in her head. Anyway "Nonsense" might be out of the top 50 next week, I'm sure you're aware of that chestnut. d4vd scores his 2nd top 50 hit and Tory Lanez gets his 3rd (1st as a lead artist). I forgot to mention last week that "Save Your Tears" became the 6th song to reach 100 weeks in the top 50. "Levitating" is looking like it might tap out before overtaking "Someone You Loved" or "Blinding Lights", which means "Heat Waves" is right on its tail going nowhere (although it has dropped quite a bit in recent weeks, we surely have to expect the annual climb to #1 in March).

So much for record breaking Taylor Swift as SZA has managed to surpass her this week and score her first ever #1 album. Otherwise the album chart is in another one of its auto-pilot weeks, with the exception of Mĺneskin scoring an album chart debut. Next week looks like Sam Smith's for the taking, but expect a big rebound for Spacey Jane, and maybe HARDY or Ava Max can figure somewhere, the midweeks haven't come out yet so I'm just taking a punt at this.

Third week at #1 for "Flowers". When I said that it wasn't slowing down very much last week, that turned out to be the opposite of prescient because the song is tanking streams pretty hard lately. Not hard enough to threaten its position at all, but hey, maybe the End Of Year #1 Single isn't as wrapped up as it might have seemed. triple j's Hottest 100 happened a bit over a week ago and it's once again a great time to be Flume, who tends to have a visible benefit on the ARIA Chart from it on most years. He topped the poll back in 2016 but in what to me feels like the doldrums of playlist engineered charts of the time didn't have a drastic effect. His 2019 runner up "Rushing Back" actually got quite a bit higher and became a top 10 hit. That's happened again this year for "Say Nothing" which is now his 2nd highest charting single ever, behind #1 hit "Never Be Like You" of course. It's also the first Australian song to hit the top 10 in quite a bit of time, as we haven't seen one since "Glimpse Of Us" departed from those ranks about 5 months ago. We'll likely get another next week as The Kid LAROI looks to jump up with "Love Again", this week's highest debut. It's a good week for those particular consonant sounds too as we also have a top 50 debut for Coi Leray, who has never charted before. I don't know who needs to hear this but "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five is an absolute classic and worth hearing if it's eluded your life. The MC on the track, Melle Mel, scored a #1 hit here in 2015 with "Downtown".

Sam Smith scores a second #1 album, and first to debut at pole position. We are assured chaos as Taylor Swift jumps back ahead of SZA and I couldn't tell you where they're gonna settle next week. If there's one thing to know about me it's that I'm an avid Hottest 100 nerd/historian/collector/whatnot. A funny thing happened this year because in addition to the first two singles polling last year, Spacey Jane picked up another 6 entries this year, all 8 coming from their second album. It was pretty clear to me that it actually was cheaper to just buy the whole album than cherry pick each individual entry. I'm not saying that anyone else did this but Spacey Jane don't quite crack the ARIA top 50 singles chart, and instead vault back into the top 5 of the albums chart. Elsewhere this week, Bob Dylan continues to chart with the Bootleg Series, almost reaching up to the point in time when they started. Ava Max hasn't really had any singles chart success lately outside of "The Motto" but she does manage to chart again with her 2nd album, having previously made the top 10 with her first. We've also got the return for legendary US prog rock act Lil Yachty, charting just 1 spot lower than their only other entry, "Lil Boat" from 2018. There's a climb for Red Hot Chili Peppers and re-entry for Post Malone, as a prelude to further action next week as they're currently touring together.

'Love Again' only barely debuting higher than it did in the UK seems a bit surprising!

'Say Nothing' is not my favourite song from him but great to see Flume so high up anyway. Not heard much from Spacey Jane but I did enjoy the new version of 'Lots Of Nothing' with BENEE.

What kept Sam's 2nd album off #1?

Incumbent P!nk album, still at #1 on week 4.

I'd guess "Love Again" would be higher if Hot Hits Australia weren't a little slow to adding it (though Australia in general always feels a couple days behind the pace on new releases). And I guess maybe if ARIA had ACR he could be close to the top 5 laugh.gif

Gonna try something different. Mid last year ARIA started publishing a New Music chart, possibly to satiate the anger around the slow moving chart but if anything making people angrier because it strengthens the idea that ARIA will not change the rules any time soon. In any case, for much of last year, this top 20 chart never actually got lower than the ARIA top 50, so you actually couldn't gleam much info out of it, but lately that isn't the case, so I thought I would highlight the songs that feature on it that are below the top 50, kind of like a Bubbling Under chart but in reality most of them are gonna be songs that already hit the top 50 in the past. The way the chart works is that artists are limited to 3 entries (although Metro Boomin' somehow had 4 late last year), and the songs have to have a release date on ARIA's archive within the last 4 months, which usually means 17 weeks max on this chart, but sometimes songs can get kicked off after 16 weeks. This means that any particularly old song that takes off may be fresh to the chart but not actually on the New Music Chart, so it'll probably never feel like the start of a movie I've seen before. Although in saying that "Sunroof" for some reason got a street date that actually came after when the song hit the Spotify top 200 here, so chaos rules, but I think it's accurate this week at least. We're also close to seeing "Anti-Hero", "Made You Look", "10:35", "Rich Flex", "Just Wanna Rock" and "Delilah (pull me out of this)" retired from the chart so there could be a lot of low charting songs sucked into it in the coming weeks.

"Flowers" is still way ahead but a lesser way ahead than before. In a move that surely pleases people who dislike chart stagnation, "Unholy" has a belated rebound back to #3, unseating the newer "Escapism." but at least it's not the same top 3. The Kid LAROI jumps to #6 to score his 6th top 10 hit, if you can name the 6th highest of those, you'd be excellent at music trivia. I regret to say "Players" has outpeaked "The Message" although I'll inhale the copium and choose to believe that there was limited distribution and/or airplay for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in the early '80s but then at the same time I'm surprised a rap song charted that high at the time. There are a lot of debuts this week! The highest comes from PinkPantheress who has never charted here before I believe outside of not being credited on "Obsessed With You", but she looks poised to vault into the top 10 next week. Morgan Wallen is also in the top 50 for the first time ever, I think he made the top 100 with "Broadway Girls" but this is his first solo outing. I'm expecting a lot of enraged discourse and album tracks in the top 50 in the coming months and am hoping to restrain myself from joining in. For the record I believe in forgiveness and self-reflection/improvement. P!nk is back in the top 50 for the first time in nearly 2 years. Usually lately her songs have been managing a week in the top 100 at most. As you probably know, "TRUSTFALL"'s streaming success is dubious at best but I will note an interesting spin on things as it actually took an extra 2 days before the song collapsed on Spotify here compared to most other countries. Sabrina Carpenter was unanimously on the same day everywhere so I find this an interesting spin, although it did coincide with a P!nk national tour announcement, which if you know anything about Australia is a big deal, so maybe that weathered it for a little bit. In any case, the song may well survive in the top 50 next week as it hasn't fallen particularly far yet on Spotify. Speaking of big Australian tours, I have to say that Fred again.. is so hot right now. His tour with Laneway and associated sideshows that have become an internet meme, in addition to a stellar performance in triple j's Hottest 100 last month has his songs littered everywhere on the Spotify chart. "Delilah (pull me out of this)" is doing the best and may well challenge for a top 20 position if it can hold up well throughout the week (and "Jungle" is close to the top 50 too which is interesting because none of these songs charted this high anywhere else). For now though he gets his second credited top 50 hit. Sam Smith's not here to make friends which is why they're not credited on the song, and NewJeans manage to sneak onto the chart after weeks of hovering below with two of their songs. Oh and the UK has infected us with the green green grass, I'm not sure what the cure is but it might be interesting to know that it's only George Ezra's 4th top 50 hit, he hasn't charted since "Shotgun" became a huge #1 smash. Also if you like maths, all of his previous chart peaks multiply together to this current peak of #50.

As last week may have helped signify, Taylor Swift returns to #1. Shania Twain misses the chance to have #1 albums spanning 4 decades as she lands at #5, having hit #1 with every album since "Come On Over". The chart continues to be even more covered with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Post Malone albums, while Spacey Jane have the only Australian album in the top 50 this week.
