Camila!!! Wow! I knew it was a great song but you never know how the public will react. So happy for her and the album is great. She made the right decision then...

Interesting sounding remix! I'll have to check it out soon, I really liked the original and I've bene enjoying Sean Paul & Popcaan's stuff for a while tongue.gif

Posted by: Bjork Jan 12 2018, 08:18 AM

oh river is 59p! surprising, thought it was an album track at this stage
guess they figured out Perfect is gonna be on acr so they really wanna get that #1

Posted by: Dexton Jan 12 2018, 08:24 AM

River should definately be #1 next week then biggrin.gif Would also be fantastic if Craig David and/or Rita/Liam could make it there in the coming weeks too.

In a perfect world, Dua Lipa & Camila would grab second #1's with their respective follow-up singles also. But I don't have high hopes for that tongue.gif

Just incredible how Eminem is going to have a no1 single in 2018 especially after 'Walk on water's flooped. Nearly 20 years. Him and JT showing consistancy..

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 12 2018, 10:24 AM

It's a shame 'River' is just so bland and uninteresting. Ughhh.

Posted by: M4NG0 Jan 12 2018, 10:25 AM

New Honey G single is the worst song I've heard for a while, it's SO bad laugh.gif

JT is looking to have a Bionic-shaped mess if he doesn't follow Filthy up quickly.

Lets not get too ahead of ourselves. At absolute WORST he'll do a 20/20 Experience Part 2. Which still spawned a couple of hits despite the album majorly under performing for him. But I think we can expect it to do better than that already.

The amazing Sigrid just won BBC SOUND OF 2018. Let's see how it will go from here.

He will be fine. Album will be massive in the US after the Super Bowl and will easily get to no1 here.

Single at 28

Lets hope all this hype that has been lavished onto Sigrid over the last year actually amounts to something, an incredible amount of money must have been ploughed into her already.

At least Not Myself Tonight was catchy...

Filthy is just dull and repetitive. Unless he has a huge follow up like with Mirrors, I can’t see the album doing much outside of America.

Really praying something somehow blocks 'River' from just going to #1 by default this week. I'd genuinely prefer 'Perfect' just staying there (as I expect it still would if it weren't going to ACR). Won't happen though... a massively underwhelming first new #1 of the year, it sounded ok on first listen but it's already got so old, it's just another lazy 'Love The Way You Lie' clone sad.gif A bit mystifying that it's doing so well when I see nearly no one being positive or excited about it or Eminem in general at the moment.

Presumably most of these sales are from people who hadn't previously heard of her... tongue.gif

She's up to #9 now, a good sign that she could actually have some success (this is a far bigger effect than Ray BLK got from winning last year).

Posted by: cqmerqnita Jan 12 2018, 11:33 PM

She’s got R1, R2, Capital and Apple/iTunes support but nothing from Spotify.

Yeh true it's just been Alisted on radio 1 for a while and she performed on Sounds Like in early December and it didn't do much at all for Strangers.

Radio 1 must have decided to go for a pop artist this year after Ray Blk last Jan!

Same considering it’s got 2 of the current biggest artists out there

Posted by: Avicii Jan 13 2018, 04:18 PM

General public clearly not enjoying the song then, an Ed feature can only sell a poor song so much.

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 13 2018, 04:20 PM

Tbf neither End Game nor IDGAF have had big video boosts yet, which is bizarre... but iirc, premiering videos on Fri-Sun always seem to be boosted less than if they prem'd middle of the week?

Not a fan of 'Strangers' or Sigrid tbh. Which is odd aa I feel like she is someone I should stan... but something leaves me feeling quite.. cold when I listen to her songs. 'Don't Kill My Vibe' was good though.

But is she climbing on Spotify??

Pop hits do well all the time on iTunes, but become minor hits overall - like Screech's pop - because of Spotify and the majority of people using that. The popsters are still using iTunes, hence the big difference between iTunes and the real charts

It was still pretty major though, top 3 officially, decent chart run, still selling, launching a big no.1 album and it also had a lot of cultural impact. Pink obviously struggles with streaming but she’s doing very well for a woman almost 18 years into her career.

Plus at the time, everyone knew that just because she sold well on iTunes, didn’t mean she would get official no.1.

Posted by: cqmerqnita Jan 13 2018, 05:46 PM

What About Us felt bigger than it was

Posted by: Shia LeMuffQueef Jan 13 2018, 05:47 PM

Only to pop fans and itunes followers. In real life, it was minor. I hardly ever heard it, ever, and it made no waves on Spotify, like 70% of the market.

You are right but a increasing single on iTunes can still lead to Radio taking notice and increasing airplay and therefore increasingly on major Spotify playlists.

It's clearly had an affect, I just thought they'd have been a bit bigger considering the names attached/where each of the artists are in their careers right now (but then again RFI had a similar sort of boost - a good one, but one which I expected to do more).

They're clearly gonna be hits so it won't matter in the long run. I dunnooo... Maybe I expected a bit too much from the video boosts haha.

you must be either completely anti-social or deaf to have 'not heard What About Us much' - it's been EVERYWHERE being used in the background of talent shows and on the radio - and it also got to #9 on Spotify, so it's not like it did badly on there.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 13 2018, 06:24 PM

lol people that argue they never hear certain songs on the radio
but actually never listen to the radio
smile.gif

What about us has been massive, only a person blinded by his personal hate for pink would say otherwise

there are lots of ways to see if a song is popular, itunes and spotify are very age-biased and particularly spotify only reflects a very particular demographic
but you can see you how big the song was cos then the album sold thousands and thousands, why? cos of what about us, it wouldn't have if the song had been a flop, it would have been a joanne otherwise

Posted by: Lomadz Jan 13 2018, 06:26 PM

Im not even a fan of Pink but that song was massive. My wife who doesn't really listen to music even loved it.

Because the few times I had it on this year, never heard it, just Coldplay and boring dance/hiphop and a couple of the big pop songs. Nope - Screech always has fans buying albums as she has always had a rabbid fan base, unlike GaGa or Katy Perry who have attracted casual listeners primarily - and then alienated them by releasing rubbish

So how do you explain P!nk's album being in the top 10 since it was released 4 months ago, and selling big quantities outside of its first week if it was "just fans" buying her music?

Why is this in the itunes chart, a couple of years old this song is! Is it on an advert? Great tune anyway!

EDIT: I remember it is on an advert recently with a fairground in it! And apparently its not just a couple of years old (I initially thought it was a 90s revival track from late 2013 as that was when it was added to itunes) but from 1991!

Looks like they're pretty much guaranteed to get 2 or 3 entries in the sales top 10 this week. Hope they can get at least one song into the official top 40.

Pleased Linger is highest, I thought Zombie had more or less overtaken it as their 'signature song' in the years since release.

They are one of those bands with three songs that are almost as well-known as each other though, as iTunes is showing right now.

All three are classics, Linger is beautiful and Dreams is so good, the Dario G cover Dream To Me is also one of my favourite trance songs.

Posted by: BillyH Jan 16 2018, 02:41 PM

I don't understand how Zombie only peaked at #14 when it was a massive #1/top 3 single all over Europe and Australia/New Zealand - I presume the subject matter made airplay/publicity a bit more challenging in this country. All three of those Cranberries songs deserve higher peaks.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 16 2018, 02:42 PM

now combined
1 River 1.00
2 Linger 0.90
3 Zombie 0.86

nice to see all this love for the Cranberries, always thought back then they were equally loved and hated, thats why Zombie wasn't bigger, I love it myself but it also ended up in a lot of worst song of the year/decade lists
+ they were also more album than single sellers

Posted by: Bré Jan 16 2018, 03:01 PM

I had no idea that 'Linger' was ever their 'signature song' tbh, I've always known it as 'that other hit they had' and thought 'Zombie' was the main song they were known for.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 16 2018, 03:06 PM

for instance in the US, Linger is their only big hit, went to #8
but I think Zombie was never released as single in the US, a common strategy in the mid-90s by labels to sell more albums, many classics like Don't Speak they never charted

Posted by: Joe. Jan 16 2018, 03:06 PM

'Dreams' is their best song and the one I knew the most growing up, 'Linger' closely followed behind. I wasn't aware of 'Zombie' until I was a little older.

You’re not alone - Zombie was the go to track for me and what I thought was their signature song

Posted by: Bjork Jan 16 2018, 03:14 PM

Linger was their breakthru hit in both UK and US, Dreams was the follow-up and by comparison did less chart-wise but it was also a post-album single
I'd say Zombie is their most iconic song and the song everyone knows and the song that made them huge everywhere in the world
but Zombie also had a lot of haters, as I was saying in another thread

Posted by: liamk97 Jan 16 2018, 03:16 PM

Agreed about 'Zombie' being their signature hit. Perhaps it's just my personal experience, but I hear 'Zombie' all the time, whereas I don't think I've ever knowingly heard 'Linger'.

Posted by: Joe. Jan 16 2018, 03:18 PM

This Wolf Alice song always reminded me of Dreams on the instrumental .

Posted by: timjimlee Jan 16 2018, 03:31 PM

I can understand why people are describing 'Zombie' as the iconic hit from The Cranberries but for me 'Linger' was the song that I remember them most for, it was their breakthrough hit, it went Top 10 in the US. I saw them live in 1994 at Shepherd's Bush Empire, Dolores had a unique voice for which both songs show off the uniqueness compared to some of their other more generic songs.

Posted by: Avicii Jan 16 2018, 04:13 PM

I thought 'Zombie' would be higher too, I've heard it a lot more on the radio in recent years and it is also their biggest song on streaming and YouTube. I suppose 'Linger' is doing slightly better because of its sadder tone.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 16 2018, 04:16 PM

oh Linger is now #1 combined

1 Linger .7612 + .2466 = 1.0088
2 River 1.0000
3 Zombie .5883 +.4064 = .9947
4 Dreams .5835 + .1271 = .71
5 Craig Cavid .65

well nice for Cranberries to have 1,3 & 4
Zombie vcirtually tied with Linger

Posted by: photografdemon Jan 16 2018, 05:31 PM

and now Zombie takes the lead! 103.46% vs. 103.09% for Linger

Posted by: AcerBen Jan 16 2018, 05:38 PM

Zombie's probably had a boost from some news articles (eg BBC News online) explaining what it's about

I think Linger has probably had more mainstream airplay than Zombie, whereas maybe Zombie has had lot of play from the rockier stations.

Who cares - they're both tunes.

Posted by: Evil Houdini Jan 16 2018, 05:45 PM

It's a shame that iTunes doesn't carry as much weight as it used to and also the fact that the chart is now Fri-Thur instead of Sun-Sat otherwise these songs from The Cranberries could have been #1 contenders. I thought that I'd never heard their music but then when I typed the band's name on YouTube I saw the thumbnail for Zombie and realised that it looked familiar and once I listened to the song I realised that I heard it before during a TV programme about the 90's.

Being honest it's not the kind of music that I like but it would have been a good tribute for any of these songs to go to #1 and it's a terrible shame that Dolores passed away at only 46 years old sad.gif

Posted by: timjimlee Jan 16 2018, 05:47 PM

I think we can all agree it is a close call between these 2 songs and there is not much to choose in terms of popularity. They even originally peaked in the same #14 position (ignoring fact that Linger took a reissue to get Top 20). I do think they have held up well today, it may be a sign of low download sales but I think it does show how popular The Cranberries (and Dolores O'Riordan in particular) are and this popularity didn't always translate to high chart positions.

Posted by: BillyH Jan 16 2018, 05:48 PM

The Linger/Zombie thing is similar to The Gossip - ask anyone in the UK to name their most famous song and (if they've heard of them) they'll probably say Standing In The Way of Control, which peaked at #7 here. But in several countries it was 2009's Heavy Cross that was their one massive hit single, which only peaked low top 40 in the UK but top ten in many other places.

Doing a bit of research after my last post and the huge success of Zombie overseas only came several months after the UK release, in late 1994/early 1995 - in Australia it was Triple J's #1 song of the year in their Hot 100 poll. Normally if that happened a song would be re-released in the UK (like Sparks's 'When Do I Get To Sing My Way' which got reissued after it was randomly a big hit single in Germany) but it didn't seem to happen with Zombie. Happy that both it and Linger have done so well and amazing to see a song about the Northern Ireland troubles gaining so much audience.

Posted by: Esmerelda Jan 16 2018, 05:52 PM

I remember hearing Linger and Dreams on the radio a lot back in the 90s. Oddly, I had zero knowledge of "Zombie" until I scrolled through the most watched music videos on Youtube and saw it right up there.

The album was pretty much permanently in the top 20 throughout '95 though so they probably felt it wasn't necessary

For what it's worth, though the Hottest 100 is a big cultural force now, it was still in its infancy in the '90s and not remotely mainstream (the station had also only just recently gone national, and wasn't widely available in regional areas where it gets a bigger market share nowadays), to the point that there was no evident sales impact through polling success, and that now there are a whole bunch of people whinging that the date has been changed because they don't remember how much that happened in the '90s. It's very difficult to even find news articles about it from back then because it really was just a radio countdown with not much prestige or interest.

I always attributed "Zombie"'s huge Australian success to timing. It blew up in the charts right when rock & alternative were arguably at their commercial peak, and you just had big top 10 hits from The Offspring, Silverchair, Pearl Jam & Nine Inch Nails whose success on the charts really outdoes what would be otherwise expected.

I remember hearing Linger and Dreams on the radio a lot back in the 90s. Oddly, I had zero knowledge of "Zombie" until I scrolled through the most watched music videos on Youtube and saw it right up there.

Honestly same. But maybe because Zombie came afterwards so I kinda checked out afterwards.

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 16 2018, 07:39 PM

'Zombie' was always my fave. 'Linger' is nice and 'Dreams' is really good too, but her voice is so unique and is to a very acquired taste. We had their album on today at work and after the first 4 tracks, it really started to get a bit too much for me/all the songs started sounding the same. laugh.gif But nice to see these make an impact, especially 'Dreams', as I thought that was forgotten about. wub.gif

Such awful news though ofc.

Yes I don't recall hearing Zombie until more recently when it appeared in itunes chart a few years ago after it was reduced to 59p. Dreams and Linger I heard in the late 90s on my parents Cranberries album along with I Still Do (must have been the Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? album).

I think Linger has probably had more mainstream airplay than Zombie, whereas maybe Zombie has had lot of play from the rockier stations.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was true, Zombie is definitely rockier (and less mainstream sounding) than Linger imo.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jan 16 2018, 09:53 PM

Zombie's subject matter and video are, as brilliant as they are, very harrowing so Linger is a bit more appropriate as a tribute for various reasons, though I did always think Zombie was their signature song and was by far the one I've heard the most. Hopefully one of them can stay top 40 for Friday!

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jan 16 2018, 10:44 PM

I was really under the impression that 'Zombie' was by far their most well-known, it's the one I always hear around (even though 'Linger' looks like a bigger hit at the time).

Love both though, 'Linger' is pretty up there with favourite songs.

for instance in the US, Linger is their only big hit, went to #8
but I think Zombie was never released as single in the US, a common strategy in the mid-90s by labels to sell more albums, many classics like Don't Speak they never charted
All three are just about equally popular in the US too I'd say, they're close together in the top 5 on US iTunes. 'Dreams' is the one I seem to hear on the radio the most!

Posted by: Dexton Jan 17 2018, 02:05 AM

Sigrid still #3 without The Cranberries, I’m really surprised at how well she’s doing. I thought she’d shoot up the chart for a day or two after the Sound of 2018 win but she’s still hanging around! Hit in the making

Here in Finland Zombie is easily their signature song. It was so popular that No Need to Argue reached #1 on albums mainly because of it.

Kylie Minogue
Justin Timberlake

Cashmere Cat ft Major Lazer

Will be interesting to hear something else from the new JT album. Filthy wasn't that great, so hopefully he'll have something better coming out. Kylie will do well on iTunes for the first few days, but will flop on streaming sadly no matter how great the track is.

I expect Rudimental should go Top 20 at worst.

I’m sure the Rudimental x Jess Glynne collab will go top 10

'Supplies' is SO much more instant than 'Filthy', I can't believe they didn't go for that as the lead, it would have sailed to #1. If it does well (which I reckon it will) they might make them joint singles or something I'm thinking.

That Middle 8 is pretty cool but it sounds like he switched to a completely different song and then switched back laugh.gif

The middle 8 reminds me of the switch up from 'LoveStoned'/'I Think She Knows'.

What are you guys on about? Supplies is clearly a full single too. He's basically done an Ed Sheeran but on different weeks. If people like it better than Filthy, it will do better.

Maybe the label are disappointed with the reaction to Filthy so have panic released this and will give it a push. Or perhaps it was always the plan. But there's nothing stopping it from doing well.

Well, in this case nope. It's being sent to US Rhythmic Radio but that's as far as it's going atm. I imagine we have 2 other videos to come from this era before the album. He tweeted that 'Filthy' was "1 of 4" about 2 days before release. This was 2 of 4. At this moment it's nothing more than an Instant Grat. Obviously if this ends up doing better in the long run, they'd be silly not to push it further. But we'll see.
