The gorgeous Paris set video for the fourth and final single from the Chemistry era - and their landmark 12th consecutive top 10 hit - is now available in 4K:

Oof their team has “done an S Club” and substituted the audio, it’s now the Ash Howes mix rather than the video’s original audio - which had all the girls singing on the chorus towards the end of the song!

I was always under the assumption that they were one and the same?

Nope, the music video had its own audio version! It’s when they’re all sat down together towards the end of the video, it has all of them vocalising (just, not anymore)

Yeah I'd forgotten about that on the video admittedly. But the production is fundamentally the same otherwise as the Ash Howes single mix. Maybe it was a mastering error when the video was first made that meant it was double tracked slightly?

I cant recall ever hearing this back in the day but it is pretty bad. I guess it shows how loyal their fanbase was by then to get it top 10.

Kimberly manages to talk out of tune the first couple of lines which is something #oooops

On the flipside, this is their ballad that I go back to the most, I've always thought it was gorgeous.

Nicola's 'hello, did you call me' line and Sarah's gorgeous outro whisk me instantly back to my uni days, I adore the track still.

Also, the Cheryl sung b-side Crazy Fool is up there with their absolute best for me. If that had been the blueprint for her solo career then it could have been very special indeed.

YES

It's a shame her solo output was nowhere near as exciting as this.

Whole Lotta History is also my fave GA ballad wub.gif Another highlight for me aside from Nicola & Sarah’s parts is Nadine’s “damned if I do and I’m damned if I don’t…” section. heart.gif

Well I think I'm a great addition to these discussions because I come from a neutral view point.

I have/had no feelings on 'Whole Lotta History' before so was listening to it like a new song with no nostalgic feelings. It is pretty shit but then every GA ballad I've heard is so they are at least consistent.

When Chemistry came out, I remember that Whole Lotta History was very warmly received by the fanbase as being a stand out track, which may have been a reason behind the label selecting it to be a single. The label had committed to See the Day being a single way in advance of Chemistry being released, so that fan feedback came too late. I've seen so many posts over the years by fans saying they would have preferred Whole Lotta History released in place of See the Day! Maybe the fan base is a bit of a vacuum but I've never seen anybody think it's awful before (not just aimed at Sammy, I see your post Meekul!!). Obviously you're both entitled to not like it, just saying that of all the Girls Aloud singles it's not one I've noticed strong criticism for, before.

The critical reviews for Chemistry are mostly very concise without going into depth about each song, only one referred to Whole Lotta History and they compared it to "sounding like the Spice Girls in their "2 Become 1" mode", which in my book is solid praise lol.

Commercially speaking... I suppose the fact that Whole Lotta History reached #6 as the fourth single, when two previous singles had peaked lower, was a reasonable result. There could have been far worse outcomes. In 2006, Sugababes - 'Follow Me Home' only reached #32 and Liberty X ended a streak of Top 15 hits when 'X' reached #47. So Whole Lotta History must have been doing something right.

Radio airplay was not strong - it peaked at #55, which made it their worst performing song on radio at that time, which was maybe why Whole Lotta History fell down the singles chart quickly.

09 I'll Stand By You
20 Wake Me Up
42 Long Hot Summer
34 Biology
06 See the Day
55 Whole Lotta History

Radio was relatively frosty towards a lot of their uptempos, whereas both I'll Stand by You and See the Day were airplay hits... so maybe another reason why they chose Whole Lotta History was with the hope that it would be embraced by radio? Which evidently backfired. As far as I can remember Radio 1 was always pretty supportive of Girls Aloud; I'm not sure which other stations were supportive and which weren't, but there must have been some snubbing going on for it to only reach #55!

Always had a soft spot for this song. Such a gorgeous video and stunning vocals (I particularly like Nicola's intro into verse 2)

It bugs me when people take a disliking to slower songs by groups known for their pop tunes. They are allowed to show some versatility!

I admit I generally don't think ballads are GA's strong point at all, but this is fab!

I'd take it any day over the two covers and 'Beautiful...'

I love a good ballad but I cant say any of GA are very good. I'll stand by you is fine but it is just a carbon copy of the original so a bit pointless.

Their uptempos were their strong point.

I mean compare Whole Lotta History to Viva Forever, Never Ever, Too Lost in you or Stronger and you see really it is just blah.
