QUOTE
This may not come as a shock to anyone who's marveled at her multitasking ways, but just four months after the release of her Born This Way album, says she's already working on the follow-up, which she says will be released "sooner rather than later."

That's what she told Ryan Seacrest just before the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas, adding that the new disc is just one of many projects she's juggling at the moment.

"I'm actually already working on my next album," she said. "So I've been working on that. I've been planning the next tour, which keeps me very excited and busy because I have lots of new ideas, and I know exactly how I want it to look. I'm also planning my next music video. I have lots of things to do, but in truth, I feel like I'm the most alive when I'm onstage."

And while there's still no release date (or any concrete information) on Gaga's next album, her manager, Troy Carter, recently suggested that, if he has his way, Gaga might give the record away for free.

Check out photos of Lady Gaga and others at the iHeartRadio festival.

"If it was up to me, I'd give away the next album and put it on every handset that I can put it on," Carter said last week at the f8 conference in San Francisco. "You can't be scared to fail. Sometimes we're going to get big results, and sometimes you learn a lesson, make an adjustment and move on."

Gaga made waves back in May with the multitude of methods she promoted Born This Way, including a much-discussed 99-cent pricing scheme with Amazon.com, which temporarily crashed the site.

A spokesperson for Gaga's label could not be reached for comment by MTV News about the new album.

I would like a new Album. Born this Way didnt impress me. Her best album was the Fame Monster

Posted by: Propilot87 Sep 30 2011, 03:14 AM

hmm i wonder which direction she'll take her sound in with this album, im really curious to see if she'll keep it similar to BTW or go back to the fame/fame monster sound, or evolve it completely.

Born This Way wasn't as good as them 2 imo, it's still excellent that said biggrin.gif

Gaga has revealed to MTV that she already has the name for the album, and has chosen Fernando Garibay as the producer.

QUOTE
Lady Gaga is perhaps the busiest monster of them all. Just six months after dropping her chart-topping Born This Way, the Mother Monster is already hard at work on its follow-up.

"I've started writing it and I have the name for it and all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place," she told MTV News at Jingle Ball in Los Angeles, where she also talked about her Grammy nods and "Marry the Night" video. "I'm excited to put it out, but it's not done yet. So I'll put it out when it's done."

BTW contributor Fernando Garibay recently stopped by the MTV News offices in Santa Monica, California, and shared the vision he has in mind for Gaga's next release.

"I get a little bit of anxiety thinking about that right now," the producer said of plans for the album. "I wanna just always try to outdo ourselves, our songs.

"They're already incredible songs. But I feel like she's so young," he said, adding that the record is in its early stages and that "there's a lot of room to grow."

While Gaga will hit the road on the Born This Way Tour next year, Garibay said that won't halt the recording process. "The last record we made in bus stops and hotel rooms," he said. "Wherever she's at, we'll make it."

However the recording schedule pans out, Garibay knows he and Gaga will continue experimenting with new sounds. "She's the perfect platform for me to express myself," he said. "You can do stuff with her that you can't do with anybody else. It's amazing."

She could finish the singles off Born This Way in May 2012 with Schiesse and Americano as final singles in February and May 2012. Then I think she should release the first single off this (as a held back release!!!!) in November 2012 then second single (as held back release!!!) in February 2013 along with the album!

Posted by: Oricon Dec 6 2011, 09:47 PM

I want RedOne, has Gaga fallen out with him or something? He is producing less and less songs for Gaga. Has she forgotten who made her famous? Same with Gibson her ex-choreographer, why suddenly fire her as well..

Posted by: Slick Dec 7 2011, 12:39 AM

She's probably trying to try new things. Using the same producer all the time isn't going to help her push boundaries is it?

Posted by: Oricon Dec 7 2011, 01:33 AM

I'm not asking her to use the same producer, I just hope RedOne has produced 1-2 tracks on her new album as I love his work with Gaga wub.gif

Sorry mate but compare GaGa's early RedOne produced tracks to the most recent? 'Just Dance' to 'Scheiβe'. It speaks for itself.

Garibay SEEPS into the background in comparison.

Posted by: jark∞ Dec 7 2011, 12:48 PM

They both do good stuff with her. Outside of Gaga, Garibay's output is mediocre but their songs together have a chemistry so of course they should continue collaborating. Judas is pretty poor objectively and Hair is not exactly loved (although I love it). Two RedOne songs would be quite enough for me I think. Anyway Garibay can do RedOne's 'sound' better than RedOne can nowadays! (see Bloody Mary)

I'm saying using the same producer isn't going to take her anywhere new musically "mate", which is surely what someone like GaGa should be doing. The fact that she and RedOne can come up with good songs for two different albums isn't really relevant. If she wants to progress, she would naturally (as the original post said) be using RedOne less and exploring different avenues.

Posted by: Oricon Dec 7 2011, 02:48 PM

Then again using Garibay again and again isn't going to progress her either..

I think she will probably move on from him after the follow-up to BTW, so for album 4/5 (Depending on whether you count TFM) she'll probably have a different executive producer and only a few tracks with Garibay, like RedOne with BTW, only producing Judas, Hair, Scheisse & Highway Unicorn.

Posted by: Jáhq Dec 7 2011, 06:22 PM

She seems to move too fast for me, it seems silly to be naming the album already before she even knows what the whole 'sound' is like, and by the time she's finished she may want a different name anyway. I'm not complaining about potential new material but at least let the album settle & START TOURING IT before trying to move on. Late 2012/early 2013 could be perfect for the next single, with the album about two years after BTW.

That's a bit late IMO. She needs to keep in public attention. Id love for her to do a Rihanna and churn out albums ASAP if possible.

Posted by: Jáhq Dec 7 2011, 08:38 PM

I think keeping in the public attention is the opposite of what she needs to do! I've heard stuff about her being over-exposed in the past and with parts of the public turning against her this era with the singles not doing so well I think a break could do her some good. Having a new album two years after BTW isn't that different to some other artists, like Katy Perry who has released in 2008, 2010 and likely 2012. I'd prefer her to finish the Born This Way Ball before releasing another completely different album.

Write FOR? I'm presuming it's Rihanna then...

Posted by: JACK! Dec 10 2011, 10:57 PM

Yeah, the writing credits on Born This Way were pretty much just Lady GaGa herself & the producers (RedOne, Garibay, DJ White Shadow). Rihanna makes a bit more sense I think, given she doesn't always have writing credits herself (none of Loud I don't think, though some on TTT). Katy Perry also has writing credits on Teenage Dream, no idea who else it would be if not any of those three.

Gaga confirmed in an interview with The Insider that a new album will be released this year!

Posted by: CHЯIS Jan 4 2012, 04:06 PM

A NEW ALBUM, THIS YEAR?! Stupid. She just needs to get on with the tour.

If she so desperately wants to release a new album, she should just re-release 'Born This Way' with another 8 tracks (a la 'The Fame Monster') and that'll do till 2014.

NO!

Move on, do not linger on an era where the mainstream consensus is that she's going too far to the point of ridicule.

I'd also like a full colour cover this time Gaga!

This!!! Especially about the full colour cover! I think it would be more inviting than black & white.

Also, I want GaGa to do something more fun for this album, although I love Born This Way! When I say fun, I do not mean in the club songs, AT ALL! If she did an album like that I would lose all respect for her! I want a fun album, but not a generic album.

Posted by: Liаm Jan 4 2012, 04:47 PM

I'm happy with another album happy.gif She needs to be more fun, along the lines of Just Dance, Telephone and Born This Way rather than Judas, Bloody Mary and You & I, although I prefer 'darker' Gaga, for commercial success though.

Posted by: Oricon Jan 4 2012, 10:28 PM

I said I wanted a more fun Gaga and my wish better come true.

A new album on the way is good and I'm happy. happy.gif She needs to put Born This Way back. Now where's all the hype for her third album going to be at..? VMAs announcement again..?

Posted by: HausofKubrick Jan 5 2012, 03:50 PM

Im pretty sure that Jeff guy (someone close to Gaga) on Twitter has said somewhere that the new album already has a more TF(M) Gagaesque feel to it, but i doubt anything has even been recorded yet.

She REALLY needs to get this tour started. If she releases an EP like TFMonster then that would work with the tour, but a new album just wouldnt...

Posted by: Jack500 Jan 5 2012, 04:07 PM

i thought this was the 3rd album after the fame with rerealse and born this way

Posted by: Oricon Jan 5 2012, 04:46 PM

The Fame Monster was classified as an album but then got reclassified into an EP only for some reason...

Posted by: ▲▲▲ Jan 5 2012, 04:52 PM

Coldplay's Twitter account retweeted that Gaga tweet, and loads of people are guessing that they are collaborating on this album! I wouldn't have thought of Gaga and Coldplay collaborating, but it would be exciting! ohmy.gif

Posted by: CHЯIS Mar 25 2012, 12:30 AM

I wasn't expecting a collaboration with Coldplay, but if its true I'm looking forward to hearing it! She said her next collab would be with Elton John, which doesn't excite me as much as the rumoured Coldplay one. Wasn't there confirmation late last year that she'd also worked with Nicki Minaj on a track? Or was it just a rumour? Whatever it was it better be true.

Posted by: Aidan Mar 25 2012, 12:35 AM

How much did her last album sell?

Posted by: HausofKubrick Mar 25 2012, 08:57 PM

My prediction for the next album is that it will get much darker.

I really think Gaga is giving hints about her next album with her recent tweets. I expect death and murder; the opposite to Born This Way. The Fame went dark with The Fame Monster and I predict Born This Way is heading the same way.

If this is the case, Marry The Night as the final single would make perfect sense (marrying the darkness)

I also think Kill The Bitch will be a future single name kink.gif

Rumours flying all over Twitter about 'White Roses'.

Gaga sang Americano at the btwball in Brisbane holding white roses, and her partner's on the album have been tweeting about roses/thorns, and apparently there have been loads of other hints (roses in the backgrounds of some pics she has tweeted). They are Princess Diana's favourite flowers (there is a song about her on the new album) and so White Roses (which is trending worldwide) could be a new single or concept on the album.

Probably just us reading too much into all these tiny hints but watch this space.......

I think it's good they are leaving a bit of a gap between the last single and the new album. She was constantly releasing singles from the start of the fame up until the end of born this way and it was kinda a bit overkill.

Completely agree. There is a reason Rihanna and Katy are doing better than her at the moment and that's because they don't take themselves too seriously. 'Born This Way' is a GOOD album but it takes itself way too seriously, due to Gaga, as you say 'attempting to revolutionise pop' - fair enough if it's meaningful ballads with profound lyrics, then sure, then the music and lyrics should be taken seriously, but the kind of pop she came out with was not that at all. People don't want to have to take upbeat pop music seriously. Pop music is known for being fun and for one of the top 5 major players in the pop music field right now, she made a record that just wasn't fun enough for the general public to buy into.

Don't get your hopes up.
Anyway, Katy, Rihanna, Britney, Nicki etc. are all doing 'fun generic pop' fine, we don't need Gaga too.

You have a point about her taking herself too seriously, I agree, but people have to remember that her audience is totally different to Katy Perry's and Rihanna's, it's much older, she appeals to a wider audience, and that's down to her sound being more mature, as well as people knowing she has the talent to back herself up (unlike others).

I disagree about the album not being 'fun' enough for the public to buy into. It was never going to perform as well as The Fame/Monster did (as much as she hyped the album up), and I think the single choices didn't help personally. Born This Way was the perfect first single, but then it should've been The Edge of Glory, (ALBUM RELEASED HERE) Scheiße, Heavy Metal Lover, Marry The Night and Judas. Infact, there's a handful of fun pop songs on the album, but because they aren't generic club bangers, with lyrics about dancing in clubs, sex and getting wasted, they're labelled as 'not being fun'.

Posted by: Silver Rocket Jul 26 2012, 07:41 PM

I still think Born This Way is an astonishing pop album and the best of last year, but she really just needs a SINGLE that is up to the epic heights of 'Poker Face' or 'Bad Romance', singlewise there was not one song close to those on there but I think as a whole it's far better than The Fame and The Fame Monster.

Surely March would count as Spring? Does in my book anyway. I am guessing the single will be released in December with an X Factor final performance and then the album will come late January or early February.

Release date: 23th June, 2013.

also she said that she's in less serious mood and that album will sound like that. YES.

23rd June 2013?

Almost a year sad.gif Quite like the title though.

Alright title. Don't love it, don't hate it.
If the album's released in June, then we might be getting 2 singles before the album again. Hopefully we get it sooner though.

She's also announced that "she'll be stealing the VMAs limelight" after not receiving any nominations. I wonder what she's got planned...

Posted by: Robot Aug 4 2012, 12:51 PM

Sorry, but I really dislike that title sad.gif But, yay for the less serious stuff, her 2nd album really let me down and pretty much lost me as a fan, because it did feel like she was taking herself too seriously.

Yeah I thought of that immediately after posting it. It sounds almost like she's implying that her 'pop' is better and more 'arty' than other pop. Which ain't at all the attitude I like in a popstar.

I still like the name though. It's probably my favourite of the three/four so far.

To me her music is nowhere as serious as she pretends it to be.
"Born this way" is a great pop song for example, but it's not more "serious" than the great pop songs that Britney or Katy P release. I don't have a problem with her music, I'm only questionning her atittude. I mean, she acts like her music is some kind of alternative when it's just good pop music. She's not Björk and she needs to stop acting like she is.

She's always said that her music is art, even in the Just Dance days. I don't think she's pretentious.

She should stick to the Born This Way sound, a lot better than The Fame sound.

I get this and I sort of agree. I just separate Gaga the personality from Gaga the popstar really easily. It doesn't bother me that she's delusional and pretentious. When I stick Born This Way on I'm not listening to her ranting at a concert, I'm listening to a top notch pop record. That's good enough for me.

How can you compare an album with a song? That's redundant. And none of Britney's last three records even come close to Born This Way. She just turns up and sings what she's given so of course the quality is unlikely to compare.

Firstly, "Blackout" shits all over Lady Gaga's career.

Secondly, I was referring to songs in vein of "Government Hooker", there are many aspects to "Born This Way", some great, some awful i.e. "Government Hooker", "Born This Way", "Americano", "Fashion Of His Love". Need I go on? Whilst the quality of tracks like "Monster" and "Speechless" are wonderful.

And just because Britney doesn't overhype her music, and bang on and on about what the album means to her and it's worth and being an album of our generation, doesn't mean anything. None of us know what goes on behind closed doors, how do you know that Britney doesn't personally select the music herself? I mean it's very obvious she picks the majority of the singles.

OH and lastly, no-one has a problem with the fact Rihanna just turns up and sings whatever.

LOL. No.

BTW is the most pretentious album ever. Serious Gaga was good when she was doing 'The Fame Monster'.

I fail to see why people find BTW so great. It's solid, yet fails to compare to her previous work.

Posted by: Liаm Aug 6 2012, 03:04 PM

Now I love Gaga and Born This Way is one of my all time favourite albums (perhaps a bit premature to claim that but that's another story) but you can hardly deny the whole 'album of the century which will revolutionise pop' thing she was claiming for ages before release was pretentious!

She does admittedly take herself a bit too seriously, the whole 'you have to capitalise Artpop' thing is one example of that. I do love her beyond belief though, I think she just loves her music and that shows, but she needs to lighten up a little to be totally honest.

Posted by: ▲▲▲ Aug 6 2012, 09:17 PM

The word pretentious is thrown around way too much. It's such a lazy criticism. Her comment about Born This Way being the "album of this generation" was obviously misguided and moronic but she clearly gets caught up in her own hype.

No regressing back to 'The Fame' sound please. Other than being well managed and successful I don't quite understand why it is held with such high regard. It's just a few dated hits scattered across a basic and generic album. Everything she has done since then has been infinitely more interesting. She's developing as an artist, she doesn't need to be Rihanna or Katy Perry.

BASICALLY EVERYTHING JARK SAID.

Posted by: AaronTM Aug 6 2012, 10:09 PM

I think the perfect sound for GaGa was the stuff from "The Fame Monster". It was a step up in quality and production from "The Fame" but not overbearingly so, like a lot of "Born This Way". I do like all three albums, but "Born This Way" featured song structures and production that made for difficult access. The charm of her music was lost and it effected my enjoyment of the album.

"ARTPOP" does give off a slightly pretentious vibe, but I'm glad that she seems to be doing something a bit more fun with the next album.

I don't really understand this comment. Maybe one or two tracks didn't have a typical verse-chorus structure but most did and it's not like Girls Aloud ever got any criticism for putting out songs which avoided that formula - if anything the internet gays tried to claim them as left field pop geniuses for it!

I third (?) all this, she's obviously got a knack for writing massive pop songs and it's just a case of balancing that with the sonic progression BTW offered.

Posted by: Casey__ Aug 7 2012, 04:17 AM

I rather like the album title, certainly better than 'Born This Way' for me. I'm glad she's apparently in a 'less serious mood', which will hopefully reflect on this album. After being such a huge fan of the 'Fame/Fame Monster' era, 'Born This Way' left me disappointed to begin with. I think this was largely due to finding 'Born This Way' (the single) absolutely HORRIFIC and 'Judas' not being much better. Basically after the release of 'Marry The Night' I actually gave the album a chance, it's definitely a more consistent album than 'The Fame', but just doesn't have the highs of 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face' for me.

'The Fame Monster' is BY FAR her best era, almost perfect, from the album itself, to the single choices and videos. I feel with 'Born This Way' she got caught up in her own hype and hopefully she'll return to being a bit LOONY, but not overbearingly so as seen in the 'BTW' era, where I think she actually thought she was the second coming.

I do hope one of the videos for 'ARTPOP', seeing as it'll be "less srs", will continue where 'Telephone' left off.

the hype she creates for these releases is so off-putting... for the 'born this way' album we were promised the album of a generation and an ode to everything that "keeps us up at night"... then she talks about oral sex and not having the freedom to have your hair LOL OKAY

if she stopped trying to tell us what her music is and let us decide i probably wouldn't find it so anticlimactic and downright ridiculous when she DOES reveal / release it. she's scarily creative, makes good pop songs... it literally is down to how seriously she takes herself and how inspirational she thinks she is. she always says "she's there for the fans" but she manipulates them and portrays herself as some sort of know-all figure / false idol to these adoring fans. it's so damn unhealthy. her music should be a vehicle to listen and relate like she's intending to but she makes it so heavy with all the extra crap on top that it's so difficult to absorb.

as an artist, she is making amazing sonic progression and if the new album is 'less serious' (capitalisation crisis ASIDE) then we should have the lightness of the fame / fame monster with the creativity she portrayed on 'born this way'. BEST OF BOTH~

Well, I didn't believe it. But it can't be ignored, it was said... and it didn't deliver. If 'BTW' were chock full of 'Bad Romances', or songs close to it's immense quality, it would probably be recognized as one of the albums of our generation. She was in the best spot to get the most recognition possible with a very broad audience, because she was at the highest peak of her career, when it comes to anticipation of a new record.

You can't expect people to not judge an album in accordance to what the artist said it would be. Album of the generation, no... better then, 'The Fame Monster'? Should have at least done that, and for me it didn't.

That's all I'm saying, in regards to my opinion.

no-one does believe something as hyperbolic (well i assume it must have been because no way can someone be that deluded), but you do expect at least a solid 10/10 album out of a statement like that. an album to really be enjoyed (if you love pop at least), but i found the whole package a 6/10-whimper-going-on-7 at a push.

and i know you say a lot of artists, but it's annoying because if anyone is going to give us a 10/10 album of incredible stuff, it's her. she's the artist out of everyone who had the headstart to actually MAKING such an album.

Posted by: JakeWild Aug 9 2012, 08:16 AM

I've never thought of Born This Way as pretentious in the slightest. If she'd gone all 4'33'' and recorded it all backwards or something to try and have this deep meaning to it all for the sake of it then I could get it but even then that's just down to what people are used to and are willing to accept and take in. Maybe my tolerance is heightened from being around SERIOUSLY pretentious work and people all day but even then I can't see how this majorly mainstream pop album is trying to fool anyone into think it's any deeper than it actually is.

plus people saying the title ARTPOP and her suggesting people capitalize it is pretentious is just BAFFLING to me. the people who call things pretentious are usually the ones who don't understand them.

Each track on 4 is a masterpiece, even its iTunes bonus track, whereas BTW has too many fillers (still less than those on The Fame). And while no '4' single was a proper hit, at least they picked the right ones imo.

It should have been a 12-track album tbh:

1. "Marry the Night" -Single#5
2. "Born This Way" -Single#1
3. "Government Hooker"
4. "Judas"
5. "Americano"
6. "Hair" -Single#2
7. "Scheiße" -Single#3
8. "Bloody Mary"
9. "Black Jesus † Amen Fashion"
10. "Bad Kids"
11. "Heavy Metal Lover"
12. "The Edge of Glory" -Single#4

(no I didn't include You and I because it's horrible (imo always) and it's out of place in BTW despite its success as a single.)

To get back on topic, I really hope they get everything right with ARTPOP as its the album that will prove Gags longevity. or not.

People are way too harsh on Born This Way. Yeah it has it's filler but cut the crap and you have the best 10 track pop album released in quite some time.

01 Marry The Night
02 Born This Way
03 Government Hooker
04 Judas
05 Americano
06 Scheiße
07 Bloody Mary
08 Heavy Metal Lover
09 Yoü and I
10 The Edge Of Glory

It's incredibly strong and how someone cannot see that is beyond me!

Compare it to The Fame where, if you remove just 3 of the singles, you're left with an album of piss poor tracks that even Pete Waterman would reject as sub standard.

Posted by: Dandy* Aug 29 2012, 07:15 PM

Oh and ARTPOP is a great title (caps for you gaga) and it doesn't sound pretentious at all. It's a play on words in the same way so many other artists do with their titles, it's just that gaga has chosen a subject that's actually worth paying homage to.

Posted by: Silver Rocket Aug 29 2012, 08:27 PM

I doubt we'd get an album cover so early on anyway, and I'm optimistic it won't be worse than the Born This Way cover! (still can't believe that)

Completely agree. The filler tracks for me are Black Jesus and Fashion of his Love.

The Queen is a highlight of the album, so I'd include it in your list.

And musically my life is dead right now. I NEED new Gaga music!!!!!

Posted by: ż CHARLIE ? Aug 30 2012, 12:10 AM

Well if we're playing this game:

01 Marry The Night
02 Born This Way
03 Government Hooker
04 Hair
05 Americano
06 Scheiße
07 Bloody Mary
08 Heavy Metal Lover
09 Yoü and I
10 The Edge of Glory

Only a similar crop of "Born To Die" would challenge that as the best mainstream pop album of the last couple of years.

Posted by: _Chris Aug 30 2012, 05:02 PM

01 Marry The Night
02 Born This Way
03 Government Hooker
04 Judas
05 Americano
06 Scheiße
07 Bloody Mary
08 Heavy Metal Lover
09 Yoü and I
10 The Edge of Glory

I actually really like Bad Kids, Highway Unicorn and Black Jesus, but compared to everything else on the album they're piss poor.
Fashion of His Love and Electric Chapel, I just automatically skip when they come on.
The tracklist above, and the single releases Gaga wanted (BTW, Marry The Night, Scheiße, TEoG) would've been an era hard to top.

Posted by: Klumzee Aug 30 2012, 05:12 PM

I'd agree with Chris' BTW album but I'd keep Hair in as well to make an 11 track album, never understood the hate for it at all!

Posted by: Liаm Aug 30 2012, 05:26 PM

Electric Chapel is the worst on the whole album.

My 10 would probably be...

01 Marry The Night
02 Born This Way
03 Government Hooker
04 Judas
05 Hair
06 Scheisse
07 Bloody Mary
08 Heavy Metal Lover
09 You & I
10 The Edge Of Glory

There's not really a track below 7.5/10 on the whole album though to be honest!

Posted by: _Chris Aug 31 2012, 01:28 PM

The Queen is easily the worst, and Hair is just 4 minutes of dull cheese, in my opinion of course.
In hindsight the album should have been;

STANDARD
10.0 Scheiße
10.0 Heavy Metal Lover
10.0 Marry The Night
09.5 Bloody Mary
09.0 Born This Way
09.0 Judas
08.5 Government Hooker
08.5 Yoü and I
08.5 The Edge of Glory
08.5 Americano
-
DELUXE
07.5 Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)
07.5 Bad Kids
07.0 Black Jesus † Amen Fashion
06.0 Electric Chapel
-
BIN
05.0 Hair
05.0 Fashion of His Love
02.0 The Queen

Three 10/10 moments for me, and despite a few awful tracks, and not the right single choice's it was still easily the best pop album of 2011. I just hope ARTPOP will be to a similar standard, if not better.

Posted by: Cal Sep 1 2012, 03:32 PM

Don't get the hate for 'Electric Chapel' at all. 'The Queen' is BY FAR the worst, followed by 'Hair'!

Azealia Banks has confirmed her collaboration with Lady Gaga.

The rapper revealed that she has worked on a new song with the 'Born This Way' star, but is unsure if it will make the final version of her upcoming album ARTPOP.
"Yeah, I worked on a song for her," Banks told Capital FM. "I don't know if it will make her record. I hope it will make her record, but we'll wait and see."

This is going to be crazy. It'll either be a hot mess, or incredible.

There will be a special APP version, which she will be able to update regularly etc (and also the regular digital and physical version).

ARTPOP is not just an ALBUM its a PROJECT

Im excited to tell you all that ARTPOP is going to be a multimedia experience that comes in different forms. The most major way to fully immerse yourself in ARTPOP is through the APP. ARTPOP will be released as an IPAD, iPhone, mobile and computer compatible application (WORLD) that is completely interactive with chats, films for every song, extra music, content, gaga inspired games, fashion updates, magazines, and more still in the works! I will also be able to upload new things to the APP all the time, the same way i upload to twitter and LM.com. You inspired me to create something that communicated with images, because YOU do, YOU communicate with me and each other with .gifs and pictures, and artwork, graphics ALL DAY 24/7/ YOU'RE an ARTPOP generation. Im hoping you will all continue to grow together and stay connected through your creativity. much love.

love, gaga

p.s (start asking for IPADS FOR XMAS!!) its gonna be so fun. but dont worry. it will also be released in the regular physical and digitals which will be unique and different to the app.

HEYLO! Good morning angels! been reading your comments/questions about ARTPOP APP and wanted to answer your questions!

1. ARTPOP APP will be available to work on computers (for example your laptops,) in addition to iPads, tablets, smartphone, Android, (compatible with as many formats that this technology can function on at this time) if you have a laptop this will fully suffice you to utilize it, so do not fret! I already anticipated you would say that smile.gif Nobody will be missing out on anything special! Nothing is different except I've giving you more stuff to play with and have fun.

2. It will not be more expensive than album. I find digital music to be overpriced (as it is not the same value as a physical copy) and this is a way to give you more.

2. Bjork (who had always been on the cutting edge) was the first artist to release her music in this way, to my knowledge. There are also other international underground musicians and business that use the APP as well to sell various products. The use of an APP as a way to sell albums, in my opinion is the future of music. I am in no way taking credit for the invention of the APP, or claiming to be the first artist to distribute music this way. An APP is "CANVAS" a medium. Like an MP3 is a medium for digital music, except I can attach a variety of sub-mediums within the APP to create a visual/interactive world for you. This world is built organically by the HAUS OF GAGA, and will be a completely unique and different experience from other music-sale based APPs because its inspired by us and the new sound of my music. However I am hoping that *god willing* the success of ARTPOPs music will propel the use of artist driven APPs further into the music industry stratosphere. Im excited to be apart of it. Ultimately the APP is unimportant if the music isn't great though right?

3. My vision for ARTPOP in general is also NOT EXCLUSIVE to the APP. That is just one element. THE ARTPOP PROJECT extends beyond the APP and there will be more surprises in the future NOT related to the APP, perhaps I did not make that clear. SORRY!!

4. I know how protective and loving you all are, especially after the last year. I respect and love you for looking out for me. I don't think I've ever made a personal request from you before but here goes…

Try to release the negativity of last year and open your hearts and minds to a more free-thinking, and happy year. ARTPOP is about POSSIBILITIES. Try not to stress or put energy into a fear that I will be attacked again. I will always be a warrior for you, and expect to be in a line of fire for the next 30 years. (I always expected/wanted to be this kind of polarizing figure) but, I want you to ENJOY THIS EXPERIENCE, don't allow fear of the media to propel you into a frenzy and steal your joy of whats to come. Please trust me. I've grown a lot this year. Lets grow together. I won't let you down.

love you cookie monsters,

Posted by: ▲▲▲ Sep 6 2012, 03:15 PM

I just like that she actually seems to try. You can't say that about a lot of other artists, despite how majority of what she says is covered in cheese.

Posted by: Slick Sep 6 2012, 03:17 PM

I agree. If there's one thing you can say for her, it's that she does like to try new things out and she obviously cares a great deal about what she does.

Posted by: Marina Hurts Sep 6 2012, 06:43 PM

The problem with Gaga isn't that she's trying out new ways. It's that she's trying too hard to pass for an innovative/groundbreaking artiste.

Posted by: 152chris Sep 6 2012, 11:09 PM

People having a go at this are just a bit ridiculous? It's hardly ground breaking stuff so there's not even any pretension to be FOUND. She seems even more grounded and normal recently if anything.

This whole concept so far seems PROMISING

The rumour mill is in overdrive. Take the following with a pinch of salt:

-Scheiße is getting released as a single to promote her FAME fragrance, and the full version of the advert (confirmed September release) is the Scheiße music video.
-Gaga is on Good Morning America on Friday morning (confirmed) and as well as promoting FAME, there'll be a single announcement.
-Rihanna and Lady Gaga are working on a duet together for ARTPOP. (I think people have got this from them Tweeting each other a couple of days ago, and because they're currently staying in the same hotel in London). Hopefully it's not true though.

'Highway Unicorn' is SO underrated.

10 - Scheiße
10 - Yoü and I
10 - Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)
10 - Government Hooker
9.5 - Edge Of Glory
9 - Bloody Mary
9 - Americano
9 - Judas
8 - Marry The Night
7 - Heavy Metal Lover

It drops off QUICKLY for me, after that. With that being said, it put it into perspective for me that it was just as strong as 'TFM', there was just filler on 'BTW', and none on the previous.

I apologize to the fans that this situation with Partynausous is confusing. To it clear it up I must explain this. When I collaborate with an artist i work solely with them, not with their camps or management. Its purely organic and creative. I love Kendrick dearly as a friend, but was not willing to compromise musically to the changes his team was making to my music. This is why I am not his record. I have a very specific vision as a producer and songwriter, and I always have. That song will be released at a different time, for a different project. I love you, and think you should check out his stuff because he is truly great. He's a good kid, its just sometimes a mad city.

Lady Gaga's New Album 'ARTPOP' Sounding "Really Great" According To Label Boss

Lady Gaga's new album 'ARTPOP' is sounding "really great" according to one of her record label bosses.
Streamline Records boss and founder Vincent Herbert promises the 'Marry The Night' singer is working hard to give fans the album they all want, and has suggested it is still on track for release in early 2013.

"The record's coming out really, really great," Streamline Records boss Vincent Herbert revealed to MTV News this week.
"She's just recording and trying to make sure she's giving her fans a great, great album."

Vincent also urged Lady Gaga's fans to go and see her current 'Born This Way Ball' tour when they can, and described it as "phenomenal" that she is always switching things up on the worldwide jaunt.
He added: "If you haven't seen the tour. can't wait for you to see it. It's phenomenal, she's just always changing things."

RedOne on the album:

"It's very focused on writing really good songs and, of course, with the vibe of different sounds, different kinds of productions."

"My intent is the same thing: make history. If we don't feel like this is part of history again, we're not going to do it, but we're enjoying [the process]. We love doing music, so it will be interesting to see what's going to happen."

The musician admitted that he is working on dance-orientated tracks with Lady GaGa and wants to make a "crazy" song.

"I don't want to promise anything but, of course, that's always the intent. To be honest with you, it's all about good songs.

"You can go crazy as you want sonically, which is always what I try to do, but it's always about good songs. Number one is to make a dance song that is like, 'Oh my God!'"

Gaga has written around 50 songs for 'ARTPOP' and promises to release some collaborations whether they make the final tracklisting of the album or not.

The person who leaked Ke$ha Warrior and Beyoncé 4 album snippets has leaked an instrumental claiming it's from ARTPOP,

(I can't find it on Youtube or Soundcloud so here's a link) http://f***yeahladygaga.tumblr.com/post/37851183608/a-new-rumored-artpop-instrumental-leak-uploaded

Sounds a bit too generic to be Gaga, but with vocals it could be a decent album track.

I don't even care about this right now, let me know when a single is premiered.

I look forward to hearing the new material. I do hope Lady Gaga can increase her sales of this album is comparison to Born This Way in terms of UK sales. I hope this album can sell at least 1 million copies for her.

Posted by: Slowpoke Dec 18 2012, 02:06 PM

That instrumental is fantastic... It sounds like a really good club track. Any guesses on producer!? I think I can hear some Dr Luke/Ammo in there?

The way the production switches up in the second verse is great, I wouldn't call it generic. Hope it's real to be honest, it's back to old poppy GaGa, not trying to be overly edgy!

I hope not, the font is horrible. Obviously if it is real then it is nowhere near as bad as 'Born This Way' but I kind of wanted a coloured cover, and although that has colour in it, the background is still predominantly black, and I got bored of that last era.

ARTPOP Producer Zedd on Lady Gaga and the upcoming album:

Outside of your own music, you're working on Lady GaGa's new album. That's quite a big task, isn't it?
"For me, it's the biggest honour as not many people get to work with one of the biggest artists in the world. It's even better that I was a huge fan of GaGa before and it was a dream of mine to produce a song for her. In that sense, the pressure on it is huge! That said, the fact that she is so open-minded musically and creatively has made it easier in some ways."

"She wants me to do the craziest songs I can possibly do. I'm not thinking about fitting a shoe on the right foot. We're doing something completely unique and what we think is new. She's not been saying, 'You need to please my fans so make the songs sound like this', we've just made music."

Born This Way was a huge album that some considered a flop compared to the success of The Fame. Have her record label been in touch much to oversee things?
"There's always going to be an issue when people expect a lot. People always think the longer they wait the better the album will be, like Daft Punk have been gone for seven years, so people think their next album will be seven times better than their last. It's just a mistake. I think GaGa did exactly what she wanted with Born This Way and I think that's the only way you can be a true artist. It's the same with ARTPOP, she's just doing what she wants to do."

What is she like to work with? Do you get together in the studio much or do you pass things back and forth online?
"We've actually been together for most of the sessions. We spent a few months together in LA a while ago and then I went on tour with her in Asia for almost two months. After the shows we would set up a studio and work on the track. We tried to avoid working solely over email as it's hard to bounce off each other's ideas that way."

Producing while on tour sounds tiring...
"It was. We laid down the musical parts and then I could clean it up in a proper studio afterwards. Seriously, we've been working with the worst speakers you can imagine! That said, her lyrics or vocals won't sound any worse just because she did it in a hotel."

How finished are the songs you've been working on?
"The songs we've worked on aren't finished, but I have no idea how far along the other songs are. If she says they're almost finished then they probably are."

How many of the tracks you've been working on do you think will make the album?
"I honestly have no idea. I wouldn't want to put that kind of pressure on her - it's completely up to her what she puts on the final album."

Tell us about a song you've been working on together.
"There's just been no limitations at all. No set genre, song length, anything. I'm not afraid to show her the least commercial idea I have. She has a certain way of writing and she likes it to be challenged on the production."

“Gaga spoke about ARTPOP, saying that she was much happier while writing and recording it – a process that started directly after she finished with Born This Way. Gaga said that she knew Born This Way was a challenge to most of her fans, and that we endured a lot. She continued and said that she created the album, which ultimately became a movement, as a form of therapy, and she has no regrets about Born This Way, though feels she is now able to move on as a happier and more mature person. When asked if she felt pressured about the new record, Gaga said she would be worried if there wasn’t any pressure, because it helps her work. She said she knows what we want, and that’s fun, dirty, dance music, and there’s no shortage of it on ARTPOP. She explained that the album is pretty much done: there’s vocals and music on all the tracks, but she wants to take three weeks after the tour is over, during her break, to re-record her vocals with her coach Don Lawrence, so that the album is the best quality it can be, because its forever. Gaga mentioned that she considers ARTPOP her first real album, that its about a phoenix rising from the ashes, and is worried if she’ll ever be able to top it because she knows it’s that good.”

Born This Way Ball Tour Cancellation
Thursday, 12 February 2013 - For immediate release. Live Nation Global Touring has confirmed that the remainder of the Lady Gaga Born This Way Ball performances have been cancelled. After additional tests this morning to review the severity of the issue, it has been determined that Lady Gaga has a labral tear of the right hip caused by strenuous repetitive movements in her performances. She will need surgery to repair the problem, followed by strict down time to recover. This unfortunately, will force her to cancel the tour, so she can heal. Refunds for the cancelled performances will be available at point of purchase starting Feb 14, 2013.

So The Born This Way Ball has been cancelled as Gaga needs surgery for a problem she's been covering up for months, and it apparently takes 6 MONTHS to recover from the surgery she's having (to be able to walk properly again).

Doesn't look like we'll be getting ARTPOP anytime soon. Her health comes first though.

Posted by: Oricon Feb 14 2013, 09:51 PM

Oh poor Gaga, I hope she recovers fast! sad.gif

Posted by: ARTPOPchris Feb 15 2013, 08:36 PM

Someone in the Haus has apparently said that Gaga's been told she's not allowed to travel the world promoting ARTPOP, not allowed to do the ARTPOP tour nor dance in any of her upcoming videos.
The reason why we haven't had any new music yet is because she wanted to promote it, but she's been on tour so unable to, now she can't even promote it even if she wanted to, so no idea when we'll be getting this! Probably the end of the year, I doubt she'll let us wait that long though.

WHY GAGA. sad.gif

Posted by: HausofRo˘ky Feb 15 2013, 08:44 PM

While i do think this has royally screwed up the start of the new era (and end of last one), i don't think it will be THAT bad. I mean, she'll travel the world in a wheelchair to promote if she had too, and can get around dancing in music videos (not even the strong point of her videos anyway).

It is annoying that all the plans seemed to be getting the go ahead only for this to put a MASSIVE turd in the process. I just hope she has a speedy recovery (although i am looking forward to how she gets around it all)...

Meh, whatever. I'm getting tired of hearing about this now.

Posted by: ღKΛTH Jul 5 2013, 07:13 PM

I know it's blasphemy for me to say this but I don't think she cares anymore. She's way too pre-occupied with everything else BUT this album, scrapping the theme and album name may actually be for the better.

The industry's changed so much since she begun working on 'ARTPOP' back in 1903, the songs recorded for the album are most likely going to have an irrelevant, dated sound now.

What happened to her Rihanna-like working ethic? I mean she recorded BTW on her freakin' tour bus, she could record ARTPOP at her home in a week and it would be a masterpiece. BUT NO, MOTHER MONSTER DON'T CARE NO MORE.

Posted by: ƆHЯIS Jul 5 2013, 07:37 PM

Of course she cares, she's been working on the album for 2 years, all of her team including DJWS and Zedd have said this album is the best thing she's ever done. Yeah, it's took her what feels like a lifetime to release it, but I'm pretty sure if she didn't need surgery we would've had the album months ago, it was first scheduled for Spring 2013 anyway.

Posted by: ღKΛTH Jul 5 2013, 07:57 PM

I just get the impression since the accident and surgery, she's lost interest and is pre-occupied. She used to be so passionate about her fans on twitter etc, and now she barely tweets. And the little news we do hear of her is not ARTPOP-related, her appearance at a Gay Pride or her views on politics and homophobia etc.

I know I'm being negative and all, just can't help it. I miss her so much sad.gif

Posted by: Griff Newman Jul 5 2013, 08:06 PM

What she needs to do is take a break for five more years and then come back with a KILLER pop album that isn't intending to recreate the wheel.

Yeah great idea, let her fall even more into irrevelant city by not releasing for 5 years.

Posted by: Griff Newman Jul 5 2013, 08:15 PM

You don't become irrelevant if you release the right tunes? Look at Justin Timberlake and Daft Punk. It's the songs, not the amount of time you spend away from the limelight.

Yeah she's not Tweeted much because she's creating hype by saying nothing. You know how much she hyped up the Born This Way era, she's doing the same for ARTPOP. You can't really expect her to release album after album after album, yeah that works for Rihanna but Gaga said she doesn't like to rush things.

After everything that happened yesterday and with all of her team/management suddenly hinting about the album, I'm pretty sure we'll have the first single before the end of this month.

Lady Gaga downplays multimedia expectations for ARTPOP album app

Singer says free app will come as an 'interactive jewel case' rather than big-budget inheritor to Björk's Biophilia

ARTPOP may not be much of a "multimedia experience" after all. Despite having previously described her new album as an "a musical and visual engineering system", Lady Gaga has indicated that the app component is merely "an interactive jewel case".

Back when ARTPOP was announced, fans imagined it as a big-budget inheritor to Björk's Biophilia: a chimeric mash-up of music and app, exploring multiple themes across symbiotic technologies. "ARTPOP is not just an ALBUM it's a PROJECT," Gaga said at the time. Although the music would be released "in regular physical and digitals", the app was the main event: "an iPad, iPhone, mobile and computer compatible application ... that is completely interactive with chats, films for every song, extra music, content, gaga-inspired games, fashion updates, magazines."

Instead, the ARTPOP app has begun to sound like an interactive advertisement, similar to the app for Jay Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail. "The app is in essence, an interactive jewel case," Gaga tweeted yesterday. While fans will be able to "socialise" through the software, it's not an improvement on (or even an alternative to) buying the album: "The app is free, available in App Stores on your device. You can purchase the music through the app once it's downloaded."

Despite the disappointment of Lady Gaga's reined-in software ambitions, there's still lots to anticipate. ARTPOP's lead single, Applause, will be revealed on 19 August, ahead of the singer's performance at the MTV Video Music awards. The video will be released that same day. "[The song] is full of happiness," Gaga told Women's Wear Daily. "What I'm saying ... is that I live for the applause. I live for the way you cheer and scream for me. Give me that thing that I love. Put your hands up, make them touch.'"

Posted by: Michael! Aug 2 2013, 11:04 AM

That is so much better and so much less pretentious - that 'project' would have chased people away. Good decision to keep it all on the music and for fewer pretentious statements about the project. Music at the front, let's get a new Bad Romance!

Yeah it's the same song, there's just some confusion as to what the official title is (i think sources have confirmed it is in fact Aura but not 100% sure yet).

Also rumours abound that it could be featured on the Machete Kills film soundtrack just because of the general sound of it but again nothing is confirmed.

I thought that was most of Born This Way?

I like this on first listen, although I'm wary that it doesn't sound like she's moved on a lot from the robotic aesthetic of a lot of BTW and I'd be more comfortable if I knew this was just a bit of a throwback with her pushing herself more elsewhere on the album.

So basically marijuana + the Holland reference at the end compounding the imagery? haha

The production is interesting, but I can't get over the lyrics. "wear burqa for fun" r u kidding me?????

It's already problematic that so many people think she is the voice of the gay community and she is certainly not a voice for the Muslim community so I don't know why she thinks this is okay lol. This part of her personality really really bugs me.

Posted by: P∆VEL Aug 12 2013, 04:27 PM

Well, not for "fun", but "fashion". I don't really see what's so bad about these lyrics tbh.

Posted by: Mariah Scary Aug 13 2013, 12:21 AM

Must've remembered that line wrong but still...idk this post sort of sums it up well for me. I'm, of course, not personally offended but a lot of people are and that's enough 2 make me listen up. Also seeing a bunch of white twinks on Tumblr using freakin' towels as Burqa's after the song leaked definitely left me with a nasty feeling.

“The thing about this appropriation of the burqa that people need to understand is that people like Lady Gaga haven’t done a thing for the communities [here and abroad] that wear, live and breathe the garb who are subjected to harassment for doing so. The words “appreciation” and “admiration” are painfully hollow when you take a piece of clothing from a community and strip it of its intent and the consequences that come from it. Lady Gaga makes millions and taxes subsequently take a huge chunk of those millions. Therein, a quarter of her taxes are used to ravage Muslim majority populations. Has she spoken out about this? Has anyone orientalist who bast*rdizes our garb done so? Where were they when the Sikh tragedy happened? Where are they now when Newsweek posts a horribly offensive article on Muslim rage, aggressively written by their puppet Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who I’m ashamed to call my fellow Somali? Do they come to our defense when we’re expected to kneel over and apologize on behalf of extremists, who funnily enough kill us as well? If I wear a burqa, niqab.. or hell even a f***ing hijab, I’m a stupid, brown savage who has no capacity to think for herself. But when Gaga wears it, its revolutionary and fashionable. People love to scream equality and colorblindedness when such an event arises, but such a world is completely theoretical until we fix these the caricatured perceptions about Islam. The power dynamics here cannot be ignored.”

It's strange and different to me, but I don't dislike it.

Posted by: Davidson Aug 13 2013, 01:22 PM

This is outstanding. So much better than 'Applause'. My only thing with it is I really wanted one final massive drop after she finally says 'behind the burqa', I feel like the track needed that one last explosion. Oh well, still has given me so much hype for ARTPOP now.

Hmm I didn't think about it that way. Well, tbh I WAS a bit 'wtf?' when the rumours about her new song being called 'Burqa' appeared. Like, it's an Islam thing and she's never touched anything remotely Islamic before. So that was a bit weird and felt out of character.

I hope she will actually DO something though because with the gay thing she did do things that helped people, raised awareness and shit, so it was different and felt more... whole, you know.

Lady Gaga Declares Herself 'Over' in 'ARTPOP' Ad

Singer tries a little reverse psychology in 47-second clip

August 13, 2013 2:29 PM

Lady Gaga's ARTPOP is still a a few months away, but the pop star has been steeling herself for backlash in many of her early public statements about the LP.

"Dont focus on ANY blogger criticism. I have been a producer/songwriter/musician for over 10 years. Trust the artist bloggers are not critics," she tweeted on August 11. In a follow-up post, she added, "#STOPHarassingTheArtist we are here to entertain you."

Gaga tackles the same topic again in a fresh teaser for ARTPOP, a video trailer titled Lady Gaga Is Over: A Film by Haus of Gaga. In the 47-second clip, the "Applause" of the album's first single is replaced by the sound of jeers. Gaga, her face covered in plastic, stars grimly at the camera as messages appear on the bottom of the screen:

"If you don't like pop music, you should turn this off."

"Lady Gaga is no longer relevant."

"Ever since Born This Way, she's a flop."

"DO NOT buy her new single 'Applause' on iTunes."

"Give her no A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E."

"DON'T dance to the song at all."

Reverse psychology? Criticism as art? Hear "Applause," which recalls Gaga's early work on The Fame, here.

Some of her fans copy every look she does and upload it to tumblr / littlemonsters.com, it is tragic, but I don't begrudge however they choose to express themselves or find escapism; most likely it's something they will look back on in embarrassment in years to come.

The difference between Aura and Born This Way is that Gaga isn't trying to take a political stance, so I find the idea that someone would want her to sit down on Newsnight to discuss the percentage of taxes going towards the war on terror a bit too reactionary in its outrage. She wanted to wear a Burqa in "a move of passion", and it's a pretty positive portrayal in any case, she says she is a "woman of choice" and wears a veil to "hide the gorgeousness of [her] face"; she's using a Burqa as a literal metaphor for a woman's mystique and the enigma of the popstar.

Of course, I can't say whether or not it's offensive to Islamic women, but assigning a different meaning on what is seen by some as a symbol of oppressive patriarchy is not necessarily a bad thing. Here's a pretty good read about the issue;

I'm reading regularly about how people think this would have done better than Applause, which I think is crazy. Personally I believe Burqa is so dated and would have fit in with the Fame Monster era, it's basically Bad Romance just far from as great.

Pop star or avant-garde artist? Lady Gaga wants to be the next Warhol

Stefani Germanotta has conquered the pop world as Lady Gaga, and now she wants to be taken seriously in the art world. As she heads for London, we ask some 'real' artists to rate her chances

Poker face: Lady Gaga in Los Angeles last week. Photograph: MAXA /Landov / Barcroft Media

Vanessa Thorpe

The message is crystal clear: do not buy Lady Gaga's latest album or download tracks because she is "over" and "no longer relevant". Many will be happy to obey, but it's not quite that simple. The clarity of the instruction is undermined by the fact that it's Gaga herself who is telling her audience to chuck her over in favour of something new.

Her promotional trailer for the album Artpop is not the first to deploy reverse psychology in the marketplace, but the flamboyant New York singer could well be the first to bill her campaign as the birth of a new artistic movement. Citing the work of pop artist Andy Warhol, Gaga, 27, is setting out "to alter the human experience with social media" and to "bring art culture into pop in a reverse Warholian expedition".

So what exactly is she asking fans to sign up to? An early clue came last week when Gaga, who has already sold 23m albums, was forced to release Applause, the first single from the album, a week early after it was leaked online. Gaga, who performs at London's Roundhouse on September 1, quickly put out a "pop music emergency" tweet to her millions of followers before taking to the streets of Manhattan with her face painted to promote the track. Far from a disaster then, since her perverse advertising push for the album was under way, and she is due to sing the song live at the MTV Music Awards next Sunday.

This will be her first performance following hip surgery in February, and the first time fans will see her newly reduced body shape. Unusually, the Gaga body has been more in focus than the Gaga wardrobe this summer because of a series of nude photo sessions for the next cover of V Magazine , and work with the avant-garde Serbian artist Marina Abramovic.

It's all part of a concerted association with the art world that is to be clinched next month with the launch of a social media app that seeks "to make connections between music, art, fashion and technology". True, you could argue these connections are already there, but these will be Gaga's own connections, fabricated in her bespoke Haus of Gaga workshop. Her team promise to "explode on to the physical and virtual universe" with the album, which will announce a new age, "an age where art drives pop, and the artist once again is in control of the icon".

Cynics may wonder whether the move towards a legitimate artworld platform is simply a strategy to refresh the Gaga brand. And yet the connection with pop art has credibility, not only because of her ironic epigrams about "lying profusely" in interviews, or her preoccupation with fame (her bestselling debut album of 2008 was called The Fame), but because she has picked up on abiding themes in the work of Warhol, the artist who once said: "Making money is art, and working is art, and good business is the best art."

The movement known as pop art began in Britain in the mid-50s, but was taken to the heart of New York's art scene by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Warhol, who wanted to steer culture away from its association with elite groups. Irony and kitsch became central elements, as did highlighting the methods by which art was being reproduced for the masses. As a well-heeled Manhattan student, the young Gaga's thesis was on the art of Damien Hirst and the New York-based photographer Spencer Tunick. This weekend Tunick said that he approved of the singer's use of her "phenomenal success". "Any time there is a new perception within the mass culture, there is growth and enlightenment. Whether it's through museums, mass media and, in Lady Gaga's case, music, the inclusion of depth and art into a viral expressive mass outlet like pop music is invaluable in the expansion of new ideas. Hats off to Lady Gaga."

Tunick said Gaga's involvement would "bring a new perception or an experience of the avant garde to a mass audience": "Any artistic intervention into the masses will only move societies in borderline conservative countries to have more acceptance towards human rights issues, women's rights and artistic freedom. Art cannot change the world within a bubble. It takes artists like Warhol, Koons and Abramovic to make strong waves of change in conservative societies."

Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller also sees Gaga's creative ambitions as entirely acceptable, even necessary. "She's not Warhol. He was a genius who was consistently blank, rather than outrageous. But she is doing exactly what she should be doing as a pop star, looking at everything that has happened in the 20th century and now, in the digital era," he said. If people are outraged, that is in the pop tradition, he argues: "It's about being provocative, and a lot of contemporary art is also about pushing boundaries and innovation. You end up remembering those who did it first."

Deller's art is often inspired by popular music, and his next show, All that is Solid Melts into Air, opening at Manchester Art Gallery in October, looks at working-class musical culture. He admires Gaga, he says, for building a community among her fans, who are known as Little Monsters to her Mother Monster. "She nurtures them rather than just communicates."

Pop music's links to the avant garde date back to its birth and were solemnised when Yoko Ono married John Lennon. More recently, while the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has recorded a rock track, Abramovic has worked with Jay-Z. Gaga first talked of working with the performance artist in 2010 and has just made a Kickstarter video to raise funds for a centre for the practice of Abramovic's patented exercises, designed to train artists for physical endurance. "She is a hardcore student," she said of Gaga. "I had to blindfold her, and she was in the forest for three hours, eaten by mosquitoes and spiders, scratched by the bushes. It was quite incredible."

Gaga has also worked with the Canadian artist Terence Koh, performing together in Tokyo to an ecstatic, if bewildered, crowd at a cosmetics promotion. "When I'm around Terence I just want to poop out art ideas nonstop," she has said. Koh sounds less convinced, concluding: "Art is a diamond. The rest is just soft, silk pillows for art to tear apart."

For some, however, it is more than Gaga's artistic credentials that are in doubt. In 2010 the feminist writer Camille Paglia pilloried the singer for peddling explicit imagery in a meaningless, asexual way. "Can it be that Gaga represents the exhausted end of the sexual revolution?" she asked. Fans swiftly countered that, for them, this is why Gaga is subversive. By highlighting both the artifice and her status as a plastic pop mannequin with the trademark deadpan expression Paglia has called her "flat affect", the singer is really being more honest. If so, there are echoes of the "deeply superficial" Warhol again.

Yet even among those who get the Gaga message, some have issues with the music itself.

"Lady Gaga has presented herself as a high-concept pop maverick from moment one," said Observer music writer Kitty Empire. "She has consistently referenced Bowie and Warhol, and even came complete with a warehouse-cum-atelier of her own, Haus of Gaga. The trouble is, with the exception of her Bad Romance single, which sounded properly alien and exciting, much of Gaga's musical output has been thoroughly conventional dance-pop. Her new single, Applause, is no exception."

Empire admits that, as a diverting entertainer, Gaga can still deliver. "Her get-ups and pronouncements and cultural nods are roughly 347% more fun, and preposterous, and outré, and enjoyable than most other mainstream pop artists. So when Gaga sings, 'now art's in pop culture's in me', it's not entirely posturing."

Artpop is due for release in November.
