Please state your answer and your reasoning to join the discussion!

For me, a music video is part of the SINGLE package. I think including streams of these in the chart is as fair as including general streams in the chart. I think this will also help us get closer to a singles chart than we have been for a long time, as well.

With regards to the YouTube side I'd only allow music videos to count from the official pages, not so sure about lyric videos, but definitely not any other.

Middle one mostly because I believe only paid for streaming should be chart eligible

However if they let free streams count YouTube ones should be able to chart

YouTube - no
Spotify, Apple Music etc - maybe

I think the new Spotify-video thing is a good marketing tactic, but I’m worried that people watch the video and don’t actually listen to it. For example, I watched the FRIENDS Spotify-video on Hot Hits UK, but I didn’t listen to it whilst I was watching it. That video stream should not count towards the chart imo.

YouTube... no. We would probably see a huge rise of novelty songs doing well, as well as old songs. I think This Is What You Came For was still in the YouTube UK Top 10 in December 2017 which is just ridiculous. The current U.K. Youtube Top 10 is probably filled with 2017 songs.

Ideally I would say that only streams that would be eligible are from paid accounts (video and normal). Same for videos that are bought on itunes, seeing as far as I am aware, those don't currently count to the charts. Anyone know for certain if this is the case?

Where free spotify steams are included, I am not completely opposed to youtube/vevo videos counting as I don't see them as that much different to free streaming, as long as it is official music videos that are counted. Don't want a situation like in the US, where songs would do well due to their use in a popular advert or for being used in a meme (like harlem shake).

Agreed I’d let official lyric videos too as some artists are a little slow in making official videos laugh.gif

I think YouTube plays should be included with paid-for audio streams all with an equal 1:100. If I bought a single I'd probably listen to it 100 times during my lifetime on average so 1:100 would be fine for me. Basing this on my last fm playcounts.

Playing a video is not the same as playing a song, so I don't think it should be measured as such. Therefore it's a resounding no!

I say no to all. It would totally kill the singles chart altogether as it would certainly be bias against whatever the most popular genre is at the moment (Urban) and further slow down and clog up for weeks on end.

The ratios are still not right now.

Rather have a sales chart based on pure sales only even if they are low.

Has anybody got the current video streaming chart or YouTube chart to help us see if this would actually be the case?

Yeah, it is a popular way of listening to music these days so why not. It isn't much different to streaming a song from Spotify.

It's interesting how we are literally split down the middle yes/no with this. My hunch is that if non-chart fans were voting, this'd sway quite strongly towards yes.

No thanks... will mean better positions for artist like Drake who get a trillion views of their videos.

Definitely not as this would mean Drake, Sheeran, Bieber etc hogging up the whole top 10 and potentially putting budding musicians out of work.

I've got the current Vevo Streaming chart that is in the current issue of Music Week. The YouTube video chart should be obtainable from the YouTube website but I can't remember how to view it. Apologies for the poor formatting but it's a copy and paste job.

Thanks Robbie - some interesting songs in there! The song from Moana, that's been out forever as well laugh.gif

Taylor Swift at 5 so clearly a lot more popular than its peak position would suggest.

If video streams were to be included then they may as well include everything else too - ringtones, airplay, video purchases etc., - The charts are a hot mess so they may as well add to it.

Let’s not get ridiculous though yes music video purchases I’d also agree should be included.

So 50% of the music video top 20 are 2017 songs

Which is why MVs should not be counted
