This could be a pretty exhaustive list, so lets get it started with the obvious choice;
Are there any other songs that hung around the Top 40 longer than they deserved to or long enough that they became irritating to hear each week on the Top 40 Countdown? Plenty to choose from in recent years, so get listing! |

before someone you loved we had thinking out loud which seemingly refused to ever leave although syl takes it to a whole new level with it still being top ten over a year after it made number 1.

I remember it felt like 'Happy' would never leave, but I don't think I've seen a song hang around as much as 'Someone You Loved' ever before!

This is obviously going to be very subjective but I'll go for all of the above mentioned ones plus I'll add 'One Dance'.

so many people, so many different tastes... I mean, every person can make his own longlist of shockingly unendurable tracks/songs from Top 40 and put like everything there.
For example, song A has been enormously dreadful for me since the day 1, but for the other guy this can be the song of the year so... --- p.s. I still don't mind 'Someone You Loved' tho. |

Tbh, even songs I LOVE I get sick of if they stay around too long. I can't fathom how people can still listen to the same song for over a year, I love discovering fresh new music every week. I get that the majority of the public doesn't care though and will stick on any old thing.

Pretty much everything that was a significant hit in 2016!
That year was hell in chart terms, and also in other ways too. Gawd. |

And of course a rare overplayed female hit: Anne-Marie - 2002

I would be more interested in hearing from older members here what songs were overplayed 20+ years ago.

^Bryan Adams - Everything I Do, Wet Wet Wet - Love is all Around
but back then the advantage was that after a while singles got deleted to move to the next single so unlike in the streaming era nothing was top 40 for a year |

I think I posted this before but here's a list of songs that spent the longest in the chart throughout the 2010s, so these would be objectively the ones that most outstayed their welcome in recent history (it excludes Jan/Feb of this year so just imagine Lewis Capaldi having 8 additional weeks top 40/top 20, and 7 additional weeks top 10).
Top 40 longest Top 100 runs [2010s]
Top 40 longest Top 75 runs [2010s]
Top 40 longest Top 40 runs [2010s]
Top 40 longest Top 20 runs [2010s]
Top 40 longest Top 10 runs [2010s]
Top 40 longest Top 5 runs [2010s]

I get that the majority of the public doesn't care though and will stick on any old thing. Yeah I can relate to that. Best example for me is Rather Be which I absolutely loved before it charted but by the end of 2014 I was sick to the back teeth of it. Unfortunately a lot of the songs high up on those lists Dan just posted I never liked to begin with so have effectively gone past the point of me ever being able to like them. |

I would be more interested in hearing from older members here what songs were overplayed 20+ years ago. I remember in 2006/2007 'Chasing Cars' had an exceptionally lengthy chart run for its time and it was kinda funny seeing the collective groans in the chart show thread whenever it got played. |

'Rather Be' is a good example. I also loved 'Bad Guy', now I can barely listen to it due to overexposure. |
