BuzzJack Music Forum _ Dance _ Dance Vocalists: RAYE

Posted by: awardinary 21st February 2020, 07:22 PM

A new dance thread concept I thought I would try out periodically! Taking the time to review recording artists as well as what genres and producers work well for them.

I thought I would start this series with the British singer RAYE who came to fame in 2016 as a feature on a Jonas Blue single and has gone onto record with a few other producers too including this week’s most notable new release with Europa. RAYE may not be getting many hits on her own merit, but much of her dance features are commercially friendly and have secured her a handful of hits. She was short-listed for the BBC Music Sound of 2017 and was named in third place.

By Your Side (with Jonas Blue)

You Don’t Know Me (with Jax Jones)

Glue (with Somewhere Else)

Tied Up (with Major Lazer)

1by1 (with Rudimental)

Stay (with David Guetta)

Made It To Heaven (with David Guetta & MORTEN)

Language (with BOOTS)

Tequila (with Europa)

Which of her current dance features is your favourite?

Which dance producers would you like to see her feature with in the future?

This is how I would rate her current dance features from most to least favourite;

1. You Don’t Know Me (with Jax Jones)
2. Stay (with David Guetta)
3. Tequila (with Europa)
4. Made It To Heaven (with David Guetta & MORTEN)
5. By Your Side (with Jonas Blue)
6. 1by1 (with Rudimental)
7. Glue (with Somewhere Else)
8. Language (with BOOTS)
9. Tied Up (with Major Lazer)

I think I would like to see her feature with Clean Bandit or Sigala in the future but I think it’s good she has tried to make music in a variety of dance genres, but her best sound comes from the commercially friendly dance music the likes that these two producers make.

Most definitely By Your Side is the best here.

I meant to vote for Made It To Heaven (with David Guetta & MORTEN)

But I pressed null vote by mistake

1. You Don’t Know Me (with Jax Jones) wub.gif [in my top 10 of the decade]
2. Tequila (with Europa) [too soon to rank this really but I feel this is where it'll end up]
3. By Your Side (with Jonas Blue)
4. Stay (with David Guetta)
5. Make It To Heaven (with David Guetta & MORTEN)

Not heard/don't remember
Language (with BOOTS)
Tied Up (with Major Lazer)

Vocals on “You Don’t Know Me” are on point, though “Make It to Heaven” really shows off her vocals too.

By Your Side!

Posted by: Frenchie 22nd February 2020, 10:30 AM

Easily ‘By Your Side’.

You Don’t Know Me (with Jax Jones) of course tongue.gif

By miles - "You Don't Know Me".

Posted by: Jade 22nd February 2020, 06:25 PM

Yeah definitely 'You Don't Know Me' for me too!

Went with 'Tequila'. But how nostalgic 'By Your Side' sounds already!

Yes she is the second most prolific recent dance feature artist after Becky Hill!

Decline is RAYE’s best song anyways

You’ve got the wrong forum, this is dance.

By Your Side - not a fan of any of the others really

Looks like You Don’t Know Me is the clear winner by some margin in this Dance Vocalists poll, Jax Jones pulling one out the bag here!

The next poll will be for Becky Hill’s dance collaborations!

A Becky Hill poll was ran last year just for reference, though this was before lose control/better off without you so it may be worth running again

Oh right I didn’t see this, and I had prepped the thread already to post! laugh.gif

Maybe for now I can sit on it until we have another Becky Hill dance feature and then post it! I was also going to include her feature with a Pete Tong & The Heritage Orchestra on Sing It Back which wasn’t an official single.

Great idea! Hope to see one for Ina Wroldsen as well after Becky Hill!

My fave is easily "You Don't Know Me" but "By Your Side" and "Make It To Heaven" are both great as well. RAYE really does have a great voice for dance music.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 25th February 2020, 05:06 PM

'You Don't Know Me' just completely outstrips everything else it's not even funny.

Posted by: awardinary 28th February 2020, 11:49 PM

There were a couple of other RAYE features which I forgot to include but since discovered;

One is from 2017 and is a feature with production duo Somewhere Else;

Glue (with Somewhere Else)

Another is from 2019 which was an album track with Rudimental;

1by1 (with Rudimental)

Not particularly memorable, so I put it near the bottom of her features.

Yes its a great live performance, hopefully 'Secrets' will make Top Of The Pops Christmas this year if it isn't COVID cancelled.
