Into The Groove being her all time biggest song in the UK always feels strange to me.
It’s definitely not what I’d consider her best and it’s not one I hear often as well. I hear Vogue and Hung Up the most if i go out. |

It's a case of all things coming together at the right time really. It is one of her most known hits anyway but a combination of full-on Madonna-mania taking off + high single sales + benefit of being a new release + Live Aid + Madonna getting married all helped it out in becoming her biggest in terms of sales.

Thank you raindrops9977 and Liam! Madonna finally coming for millionaire status *.* I hope the OCC will do an article when it happens, because it’s always been a notably surprising fact that none of her singles had managed a million units. Beautiful Stranger really does come across as one of her most forgotten big hits. Have to admit it’s never been a huge favourite of mine! Beautiful Stranger is amazing, one of my ultimate favourites |

Am I right that whilst it was a huge hit here it wasn’t one in the US? She’s had a few hits what have been huge here but not so much there. Yet Take A Bow is probably the best example of one the other way around. |

I don't think it was properly released in the US. It was sent to clubs as the B-side to Angel and did really well in that area, but nothing more than that.
Take a Bow being, I believe, Madonna's longest running #1 in the US yet the first in like 10 years to miss the Top 10 in the UK is so strange! |

That's really good for Rebel Heart! Was not expecting it to be Gold in a year. I guess her streaming for her new stuff is better in the UK than anticipated.

Was it promoted well over there or used at some form of big event for it to have been so big or was it just the power of the song? I guess it was the perfect kind of song to win back the fans she lost in Erotica. |

I guess it was the perfect kind of song to win back the fans she lost in Erotica. I think Babyface, who produced the song, and his type of sound was just huge in the US so 'Take a Bow' was a big hit as a result. They did perform the track together at the American Music Awards too. As for the UK, I think Madonna was still battling though the backlash of Erotica period which may explain why 'Take a Bow' didn't perform as well as expected. 'Bedtime Stories', which followed, probably only made #4 as a result of the BRITs and the fact it had the most expensive video of the time (I believe, can't remember if MJ's 'Scream' came first or after). |

Wasn’t take a bow released in December ?
That was the main problem . They would never ever have expected it to miss the top 10 ! No promo It still outsold human nature and bedtime story that peaked higher ! |

From Music Week:
QUOTE The highest ever sale for a No.4 is 245,911, set by Madonna’s Music in the week leading up to Christmas 2000 – more than 45 times as many as Billie Eilish’s album sold to hold the same position this week.

I've been reviewing my million sellers list and I reckon 'Into the Groove' must pass one million very soon, if it hasn't already. It had sold 958k as of August 2018, so would need to sell just over 700 copies a week to have passed by now. We found out in August that it was averaging 35k a year which works out at just under 700 copies a week.

OCC:
QUOTE Madonna - Music
Chart peak: 1 Chart sales as of 2020: 1.64 million Madonna reinvented herself as a cowgirl ror her eighth album, adding a lick of pop genius to a mix of country-meets-experimental dance. It spent two weeks at Number 1 and produced three hits: Music (1), Don't Tell Me (1) and What It Feels Like For A Girl (7). |

Yeah, it might seem like a number one but Don't Tell Me "only" reached #4.
I'm pretty surprised that it's sold as much 1.64m since they only ended up releasing three singles from it (partially due to the conflict with Amazing / Impressive Instant), though I guess American Pie was tacked onto most EU editions. |

Album sales were huge over the festive period in 2000 - on Christmas week, they topped the 10m mark for the first time ever, on which week Music was at #4 with 246k. That definitely helped the album, plus media attention was huge again now that Madonna was living in the UK and married to Guy Ritchie. She was just untouchable at that point. |
