BuzzJack Music Forum _ Kylie and Dannii Minogue _ No11 hits

Posted by: slowdown73 9th February 2021, 12:56 AM

Hi, Kylie has had a few songs which have just missed the T10. I just wondered if anybody knew how many copies she was away from reaching T10 with these songs and if she was actually T10 in the midweeks but then dropped by the Sunday. Cheers

Finer feelings
Put yourself in my place
Where the wild roses grow

I dont think any were midweek top 10s but I'm not positive.
I love where the wild rose's grow and put yourself in my place and both deserved top 10, I'm not a huge finer feelings fan.

I don't think there's any way of finding the answers to those questions I'm afraid. The closest I can give is these estimates from Gezza from his week-by-week Top 10 sale estimates for the 90s:

02 May 1992
10. Ten Sharp - You 12,000
11. Kylie Minogue - Finer Feelings

03 December 1994
10. Bon Jovi - Always 18,000
11. Kylie Minogue - Put Yourself in My Place

14 October 1995
10. The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You 23,000
11. Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue - Where the Wild Roses Grow

Thanks for your replies. Which one do you think most deserves T10? Difficult choice for me between put yourself in my place and where the wild roses grow. I absolutely adore the abbey road version of finer feelings though.

Out of personal preference I'd say 'Put Yourself in My Place'. Trying to think more 'objectively', 'Put Yourself in My Place' was the bigger radio hit (where it did reach Top 10) and 'Where the Wild Roses Grow' has the better total sales and does best on streaming (it's also Nick Cave's best charting hit in the UK so it would be fitting to give him a Top 10).

I do remember Did It Again was top ten on The Chart Show but don’t recall these earlier hits midweek positions. There was no Internet forums back then either haha.

I used to avidly read Music Week in my local library, the chart analysis used to sometimes refer to midweeks...a small recollection that Roses was number ten at one point. I remember reading Madonna’s 1995 You’ll See only climbed from its entry at 11 until after her impactful performance on TOTP. I know that is veering off topic but the midweek information may be out there if the chart analysis text is uncovered.

For me if i was to choose which of the 3 should have went top 10 it would be where the wild roses grow, a very important Kylie release but i have loved the song since i first heard it, put yourself in my place i liked when it was released but wasnt a huge fan of it until years later where i really came to enjoy it and appreciate it. Its good to see where the wild roses grow has picked up sales over the years to give it a decent total as for years it was on very low sales.

Posted by: slowdown73 9th February 2021, 05:39 PM

Put yourself in my place is probably my favourite of the three although where the wild roses grow is very close behind.

Maybe we should do a poll to see fans favourite on here? I don’t know how to do a poll sorry.

Danniis Success spent 3 continuous weeks at number 11 , really unfair.

I think shocked by Kylie was at number 10 on one of the weeks !!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 10th February 2021, 03:40 PM

Ya shocked was number 10 on one of those weeks and im almost sure it was on the 2nd week success was number 11.

IIRC, both Did It Again and Breathe were top ten in the midweeks (around #8 I think), but of course both ended up at #14.

'Did It Again' was probably unlucky to be released at such a competitive time of year. These are the estimated sales for the Top 10 the week it debuted at #14:

1- PERFECT DAY- Various Artists (274,000)
2- BABY CAN I HOLD YOU/ SHOOTING STAR- Boyzone (137,000)
3- BARBIE GIRL- Aqua (121,000)
4- WIND BENEATH MY WINGS- Steve Houghton (96,000)
5- TORN- Natalie Imbruglia (88,000)
6- NEVER EVER- All Saints (85,000)
7- LUCKY MAN- The Verve (81,000)
8- TELL HIM- Celine Dion & Barbra Streisand (69,000)
9- AIN’T THAT JUST THE WAY- Lutricia McNeal (63,000)
10- CANDLE IN THE WIND 97/ SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT- Elton John (49,000)

I don't know what 'Did It Again' sold but I reckon it would have sold enough to be Top 10 in most other weeks of the year. Certainly must have been a fair bit more than 'Some Kind of Bliss'.

I am happy breathe and did it again got midweek top 10 , especially breathe, even though they didnt hold on, them missing top 10 wasnt a huge shock after some kind of bliss, from what i think i can remember when i saw the first mids for some kind of bliss it was number 20 and i was shocked it was so low as i had thought its a lead single and will go top 10, when it missed the top 20 officially i was gutted, especially when i love the song.

It's right up there for me too, comfortably inside my top 10.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 11th February 2021, 09:19 PM

I do like did it again but its the worst of the 3 IP singles for me by far, while i like the song it doesn't rank all that high on my list of Kylie singles but equally there are a few singles well below it.

Posted by: slowdown73 12th February 2021, 12:10 AM

I think breathe was worthy of being a T10 single but I’m not a big fan of did it again. Those T10 sales for the week did it again was released are really high!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 12th February 2021, 01:55 AM

Breathe deserved to be a big hit, I'd love it to get a kygo and Kylie type remix to help get it more sales recognition as its still sold less than 70k. Where the wild rose's grow has grown its sales alot over the years and I'd have loved breathe to have done the same.
It's strange when we look at how kylie singles track now, dancing, say something and magic for example all have much lower chart peaks but have/will outsell so many of kylies with much higher peaks.
It shows aswell how things change, some kind of bliss, breathe type chart peaks we would see now as huge kylie success where back then they were truly disappointing.
Out of these number 11 hits, I do think where the wild roses grow is the more well known outside the fans.

Breathe needs to be given a new lease of life via a remix, Joel Corry, Kygo etc could change the fortunes of the song.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 12th February 2021, 03:59 PM

Maybe if they release the Ip viny breathe could be the promotional single in a new remix ( in a dream world scenario) Was get outta my way ever on track for Number 11 in any of the midweeks when it was released?

'Get Outta My Way' started out at #8, then fell to #11 where it remained all week until charting at #12.

Shame it didnt hold on to give her another top 10.

Posted by: pippa 14th February 2021, 06:05 PM

It was a shock to fans it missed the Top 10.

Still not over any of those missing the Top 10 drama.gif PYIMP especially deserved so much more - such a sublime song and great video but I guess that was the start of the Kylie Deconstruction downturn.
