BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Ed Sheeran - No.6 Collaborations Project

Posted by: danG 29th August 2018, 05:23 PM

Everyone prepare yourselves for more Ed Sheeran domination because he's apparently http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/ed-sheeran-plans-experimental-release-for-2019-to-clear-the-air-after-three-successful-albums__23753/, supposedly it will be "experimental", similarly to his No. 5 Collaborations Project EP from 2011, and as such it won't be his actual fourth album but something to fill the gap.

Oh and he wants to do a song with https://www.nme.com/news/music/ed-sheeran-dying-collaborate-drake-2372193. I can already hear the collective groans of the whole of Buzzjack as that song effortlessly spends 9 weeks at #1.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 29th August 2018, 06:12 PM

I don't actually mind Ed Sheeran aside from his Divide stuff, so if it's a step away from that I'm not dreading it quite as much.

Posted by: pippa 29th August 2018, 06:15 PM

I enjoy Ed, however, i was positive Divide would get a re-release in this coming quarter.

Think he's going to wait a good few years before dropping Minus, he's supposedly been working on that for ages anyway as he wants it to be the greatest album ever or something.

"Chart Killers"- Ed Sheeran and Drake teaming up. Not even ACR or Jess Glynne could stop that being number 1 for at least 6 months.

He's got a long way to go to achieve that, "Divide" got mostly poor reviews.

Poor reviews but absolutely massive sales. I think he's trying to impress the general public rather than the critics.

Yeah, no doubt no matter how 'experimental' his next era is it'll still be fine-tuned enough to go to #1 and get hammered by the radio rolleyes.gif

He’d better find someone better to record it then.

Well I'm here for a 2019 update of the No. 5 Collaborations Project EP, that was my first introduction to Sheeran and I really rate it. Would like to see him collaborate with UK acts though vs. US rappers - I have a feeling he will so long as the label don't have too much direction in this 'experimental' release.

Posted by: danG 23rd May 2019, 12:28 PM

Giving this a bump now we know the name of the album.

Hopefully there will be some interesting up and coming or lesser known artists on this, not just other huge stars.

No.5 Collaborations Project was actually really interesting, with loads of UK rap and grime artists, I remember enjoying it a lot at the time it came out (which was maybe 8-9 months before The A Team blew up) but I imagine this will be a far more mainstream exercise. Would love to be surprised though.

Posted by: Bré 23rd May 2019, 12:36 PM

The OP of this thread describing this as 'experimental' is kind of hilarious in retrospect after the lead single was... about as far from experimental as you can get.

This seems to be full album length so I'm guessing it is his 4th album after all? Unless it's marketed as a 'mixtape' or something laugh.gif

They're calling it an EP... despite being the length of an album. I don't think it's meant to serve as his 4th album.

A 15 track EP. That term has really lost all meaning...

'Antisocial' is with Travis Scott, the song already leaked a while ago apparently.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 23rd May 2019, 12:53 PM

Antisocial is with Travis Scott, a demo leaked a while ago under the name 'Dont Touch Me'.

Posted by: 365 23rd May 2019, 12:53 PM

One of them has both Camila and Cardi on too someone on Camila's team tweeted and deleted it.

Posted by: SLlewellyn 23rd May 2019, 10:33 PM

I really hope we get some UK artists on this and not just big US acts - think of what it could do for the UK scene to feature on a high profile project like this!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 24th May 2019, 12:54 AM

It’s an album to me.

EPs mixtape album though don’t they all chart on the main albums chart nowadays.

I’m presuming this will chart on the main albums? The Weeknd did with his last year which was only 6 tracks.

I’m excited for this in a way to see whos on there and if there’s any surprise collabs on there.

I’m not as Anti Ed as most forums are but I’m not a huge fan either.

I fully expect he’ll have the top 3 or at least three of the top 5 singles the week this drops as well as having the highest debut sales of a 1 album of the year too.

Posted by: Bjork 24th May 2019, 07:35 AM

I imagined the collaborators were gonna be revealed with the pre-order but they aren't as fas as I can see

it's 100% an album

Posted by: Bjork 24th May 2019, 11:39 AM

wonder if the collabs thing is an strategy to avoid the 3-track rule? maybe this way he can get away with more songs charting

Posted by: danG 24th May 2019, 11:45 AM

Lol no, only 3 songs from this project will be allowed to chart at any one time. Ed is still the lead artist on all the songs.

Posted by: Bjork 24th May 2019, 11:55 AM

but knowing how inconsistent the occ is, I wouldn't be surprised if a few slip in

Posted by: dobbo 24th May 2019, 12:11 PM

David Guetta got 4 in the chart once iirc? He was "joint-lead" on one of the entries but that should still count.

QUOTE(dobbo @ May 24 2019, 01:11 PM) *

The difference was one of them was credited to Jason Derulo & David Guetta, rather than the other way around.
In most cases it depends on which artist is credited first.
There was that one time XXXTENTACION had 4 as a lead when they decided his Lil Pump collab was a Lil Pump song for some reason though, but other than that the OCC have been fairly consistent about this.

Posted by: Bré 24th May 2019, 04:13 PM

Linkin Park was also an exception to that ('Numb/Encore' not being allowed despite Jay-Z being the first artist listed).

Posted by: myxxd 27th May 2019, 07:23 PM

There's a South of the Border registered under Ed on ascap and is written with Steve Mac and Fred Gibson

Feels is registered on BMI with writers Young Thug, Ed and Valentin Blavatnik

4. Take Me Back to London feat. Stormzy
5. Best Part of Me feat. YEEBA

9. Feels feat. Young Thug & J Hus
10. Put It all On My feat. Ella Mai
11. Nothing On You feat. Paulo Londra & Dave

13. 1000 Nights feat. Meek Mill & A Boogie wit da Hoodie
14. Way to Break My Heart feat. Skrillex
15. Blow w/ Bruno Mars & Chris Stapleton

Way to Break My Heart and Blow are the ones really interesting me!

Posted by: coi 18th June 2019, 05:32 PM

I’ll give the entire album a chance though.

Ed’s not THAT bad tbh.

Posted by: Dexton 18th June 2019, 05:40 PM

VERY intrigued by the tracklist, I already know the Khalid and Travis Scott songs will be amazing. Eminem & 50 Cent has a lot of potential too so long as Ed isn't just on the chorus like he was for River

I wonder if we'll have another song out this week?

Posted by: SKOB 18th June 2019, 06:38 PM

This is gonna be trash to the highest degree

Watch it sell like 20% of what Divide has

'Rumors' on Twitter that the Khalid track is out on Friday, seems likely tbh.

Camila and Cardi on one track! *.*

Posted by: Bré 18th June 2019, 06:57 PM

The inevitable Latin crossover on track 11, but an interesting twist on it having Dave on the same song somehow.

There are a few on there that look potentially interesting (Ed, Young Thug and J Hus all on one song *_) but I already hate the idea of the Khalid song inevitably being the biggest hit from the album when it drops.

Also where did this YEBBA come from? Sneaking her way onto star-packed albums first by Mark Ronson and now Ed Sheeran as well. And this album was meant to be a bunch of people Ed is a big fan of apparently. Bit of a random choice!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 18th June 2019, 06:57 PM

I wish we had that fake tracklisting now...

. Beautiful People feat. Adele
2. South of the Border feat. Emeli Sande & Tinie Tempah
3. Cross Me feat. Chance the Rapper & PnB Rock
4. Take Me Back to London feat. Clean Bandit
5. Best Part of Me feat. Anne-Marie
6. I Don't Care w/ Justin Bieber
7. Antisocial feat. Travis Scott
8. Remember the Name feat. Eminem & Will.i.am
9. Feels feat. Take That & Camila Cabello
10. Put It all On My feat. Bruno Mars
11. Nothing On You feat. The 1975 & Martin Garrix
12. I Don't Want You feat. Tom Odell
13. 1000 Nights feat. Bastille & Steve Aoki
14. Way to Break My Heart feat. Foxes
15. Blow w/ Marshmello & DNCE

Just realised it got Eminem correct... (and Travis, but that demo leaked a while ago)

Posted by: Jordan Lee 18th June 2019, 07:34 PM

Hoping Camila / Cardi track is the next single.

We’ve had two male collabs already plus River is still fairly recent.

It’ll also pick up streams bc both Cardi and Camila do well on Spotify.

There are rap features on 8/15 tracks, and one of those also has a pop singer on it, so it's basically exactly 50/50, hardly 'most of them'. There's plenty of variation in sound between the rappers on there as well (if anything they're more varied than the non-rap artists he's chosen).

And of course it shouldn't be surprisng, as the No. 5 Collabs Project was a rap EP.

It's not the follow-up to Divide.

It'll do well, but it definitely won't do as well as his 'usual' albums. The general response I've seen online from his usual fanbase has been fairly negative - not surprising given the direction though.

Mixed feelings about the tracklisting. I’ll be giving the ‘album’ a few listens when it comes out for sure, just hoped he was going to collaborate with some more UK names (rather than US ones) - e.g., Skepta, Giggs, Stefflon Don. Great that Stormzy, Dave and J Hus all feature on this high profile release though, should do wonders for them (although Stormzy is headlining Glastonbury...)

Posted by: Jordan Lee 8th July 2019, 05:28 PM

What are people thinking this will sell?

I’m gonna go for around the 180K mark for week one.

Big sales but not catastrophic like Divide.

Very likely he’ll get the highest streaming sales so far too!
Does Lewis currently have the highest streams of the year to date for week one or is that Ariana?

Posted by: pippa 9th July 2019, 06:14 PM

I think it will sell enough to enter the best selling albums of the year chart around Number 7 on its debut week which would result in 180,000-185,000 sales.
Streaming, most likely will gain the album a huge advantage.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 11th July 2019, 10:15 AM

The whole album leaked yesterday and I've listened to a few of the album tracks:

The one with Eminem + 50 Cent is really good, and the Stormzy one is decent as well. Worst one I've heard is with Young Thug and J Hus - really bland.

A decent album indeed on first listen.

South Of The Border and Remember The Name are both good and sound big, and Put It All On Me is really nice.

Also still really liking Cross Me and Beautiful People. There are a few fillers towards the end which I'd have left off but the first two thirds are very strong.

The intro to Put It All On Me sounds a bit like Becky Hills I Could Get Used To This

I genuinely loathe him.

he needs someone to tell him, look this one is shit, write something better biggrin.gif

sometimes I have to go and doublecheck the lyrics online cos I think it's impossible he wrote such crap... like in the Stormy one
can't believe he sings "Grossed half a billion the Divide Tour " :/

Not heard the album in full yet (will be this weekend) but South of the Border is EXCELLENT, easily better than any of the singles!

Posted by: ThePensmith 13th July 2019, 05:19 PM

So according to Mint Royale on Twitter, this is unsurprisingly leading for number one on the albums but not with the gigantic sales people would be expecting.

'South of the Border' is probably the worst thing he's ever done, but I quite like 'Beautiful People'.

HDD predicts 170k opening in the US, that's pretty low! Will be #1 of course.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 13th July 2019, 09:38 PM

UK wise it’s predicted to be #1 but not with huge sales.

I’m surprised tbh I thought he’d easily get the biggest first week sales of the year to date.

I do feel that his next solo album will perhaps fair better albums wise though.

A lot of the tracks on this are like huge sounding singles but not what would push an album.

Tbh it’s doing great he just has a very big sales track record so it’s an underperformance.

170k in the USA doesn't seem that bad relatively speaking - the same dropoff from the debut of '÷' in the UK would put him at around 250k and he's clearly not gonna do anywhere near that. And that's with his singles making a lot less impact in the US than they did here as well.

(although I don't know if he has some kind of shady bundling going on to bolster his sales like 80% of other albums do in the US)

He will very likely do a lot better again when he drops another more traditional album, this is really more of a 'mixtape' than an album.

Posted by: SKOB 14th July 2019, 05:32 AM

Dunno, it's kinda both. I mean the promo is definitely on par with "a proper Ed Sheeran album": first single with Bieber, great push on streaming outlets, music videos, pop up shops around the globe. But it doesn't really "feel" like an Ed Sheeran album, just random songs out there.

Posted by: SLlewellyn 15th July 2019, 02:57 PM

Listened through to this in full for the first time today, and wow - what a bore/chore. It just feels like he’s purposefully trying to reach too many markets with this album, and just marketing it as ‘experimental’.

Someone may have mentioned it already in this thread, but part of the instrumental to “Put It All on Me” is a complete rip-off of Becky Hill’s “I Could Get Used to This”.

Posted by: ThePensmith 15th July 2019, 04:44 PM

Leads for number one on 63.5k. Be interesting to see if this clears even three digits by week's end?

Posted by: SKOB 15th July 2019, 07:29 PM

It should, JUST, depending on how big portion of the first bunch is pure sales. Was there a pre-order thing of some sort?

I think 101k or sth by Friday.

How do we know it doesn't sample it? There are numerous tracks used which are very similar to others, I think "Feels" samples Krept n Konan and "Remember The Name" certainly samples something during the chorus too.

I think he will make 3 digits by the end of the week but not as comfortable as i thought Ed would manage.

Posted by: darrens94 15th July 2019, 08:37 PM

The reason why this isn’t selling as much is that the music isn’t calculated like Divide was to appeal to all ages. When Ed released Shape of You and Castle On the Hill that wasn’t for any other reason but to appeal to a young and old audience. The older Radio 2 audience don’t have a Castle on the Hill on this album it’s full of rap songs and Shape of You copies with features that again don’t appeal to an older audience. When Ed releases his next proper album that will be massive but only if he waits for a couple of years and disappears like the last time and build up the hype again.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 16th July 2019, 10:49 AM

I like ed Sheeran myself but this album wouldnt appeal to me, his next album will hopefully be back to his usual style, the album isnt aimed at his usual fans so I dont think it's anything to worry about.

Posted by: SKOB 16th July 2019, 11:30 AM

Who are "the usual fans" of Ed Sheeran? Why IDC and BP wouldn't work for "usual fans"?

I want to know because it's interesting. IDC is exactly like Shape of You as a song and BP is the most least offensive pop single that one can get for airplay in 2019.

It's true that there are not a song like Perfect on the album but there ARE, however, songs like Shape of You and Castle on the Hill on it. And his lyrics haven't changed a bit.

Posted by: myxxd 16th July 2019, 11:55 AM

Maybe for some they don't want him to collab with artists who are "unknown" to them

Posted by: coi 16th July 2019, 11:57 AM

On the contrary, there are songs dominated by the likes of Meek Mill, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Skrillex, Young Thug and J Hus. Do you think the average buyer of Perfect would like these artists?

Posted by: myxxd 16th July 2019, 12:00 PM

And even in the movies, an all-star cast only do little impact on the records overall except for some like Avengers etc

Posted by: SKOB 16th July 2019, 01:17 PM

Maybe Ed Sheeran either doesn't know his fanbase then or don't care?
It's not like this is comparable to the jazz album Gaga made with Tony Bennett (someone mentioned it in the chart forum) - that was a separate project and nothing like she had done or has done since.

To me this is just bunch of Ed Sheeran tracks with urban leaning guests.

Anybody else getting 'NASA' by Ariana vibes from Anti-Social? Every time that staggered drop happens I always burst into the chorus of 'NASA' laugh.gif

Overall, I liked this album more than I thought I would. A lot of the songs blend into one for me but there are a couple that stand out. South of the Border, Cross Me, Remember the Name, Take Me Back To London and BLOW all stand out to me, especially BLOW. wub.gif

I also hate that I Don't Care has grown on me sad.gif

Posted by: Bré 18th July 2019, 04:13 PM

Decided to listen to all of the songs on here just out of interest, the quality is a bit inconsistent but chopping off some of the filler there is a very solid EP hiding in there. 'Cross Me' is still probably my fave but I'm really liking 'Antisocial' straight away (and the video for it is pretty funny as well, his videos this era beyond the 50p budget one for 'I Don't Care' have actually been really good) and 'Take Me Back To London' and 'Nothing On You' are my other highlights from the songs not already released before the album. The only big disappointment really was 'Feels' as I thought the artist lineup on that one looked pretty good but the song is very bland and I don't like the chorus at all oops. 'Remember The Name' also had potential but I'm not feeling it too much, I didn't have super high expectations though after how terrible the last Ed & Eminem collab was (it is at least better than that laugh.gif) meanwhile the tracks with Ella Mai and H.E.R. were actually both surprisingly decent.

rolleyes.gif

Ed Sheeran takes a break from music = we will have dozens of features and songs written by Ed Sheeran.

Posted by: JosephStyles 28th August 2019, 01:09 PM

Taking a break doesn't mean he has to stop writing altogether, hence him writing songs for other people...!

Also doesn't mean this era is over yet considering how he's got this far on no promo kink.gif

Posted by: lewistgreen 28th August 2019, 01:17 PM

He’s actually only confirmed a break from touring and live shows so yeah the music will probably continue

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 28th August 2019, 01:20 PM

He also said that "this might be the last loop pedal gig".

Which doesn't surprise me - I remember hearing an interview recently where he said he wanted to bring a full band on tour (for songs like Blow).

I doubt they'll re-release No. 6 seeing as these are solo tracks - and from a movie.

It'll probably it's own EP.

Seeing that those tracks are already known and have been performed they might not be as in demand as an heard track if he’s releasing two tracks then.

South Of The Border and BLOW are by far the two best tracks on this though. Which probably means they won’t do anything sad.gif

Posted by: SLlewellyn 31st August 2019, 09:08 PM

"South of the Border" HAS to be the next single after "Antisocial"/"Take Me Back to London" surely?! It's still holding up well on streaming platforms behind/amongst the singles.

Why does he need to *announce* a break? Most artists naturally have one between albums anyway laugh.gif

Presumably his announcement is more to do with the fact he’s taking a break from social media (which it makes more sense to announce) rather than from releasing music.

hope it's a true break and doesn't even do features or
even songs written by him for others

He's probably already written some that haven't been released yet.

I think it’s still ok if he writes for other artists during that time as he isn’t really in the limelight in those scenarios, rather than just the odd mention here and there

He’ll still be in the charts for the next month or so anyway as we have “Own It” likely to re-peak this week and hang around.

MK Remix of Antisocial is out now

Posted by: LMLou 5th February 2020, 09:49 PM

The original of Antisocial is pretty great, but that remix takes pretty much all the life out of it

I do think he should release another single from the album

Havent we suffered enough?

I think the albums done well enough that another single wouldn’t really be needed.

The best song on the album is BLOW but it’s not very commercial sounding for Ed. I think it would’ve been a single by now though if it was gonna be one.

Cant see any more singles coming and in time the album will easily go 3x platinum.

Posted by: dan-G 22nd June 2020, 02:49 PM

he went on his social media hiatus earlier this year so that was confirmation that this era is done.

Sorry to drag up an old post but I agree with this - perhaps for about 50/60 years?

Yeah but I’d rather suffer with a new single than suffer with Perfect

Don't listen to 'Perfect' then xo
