20th Century Fox has a load of superhero movies in the works. Deadpool 2, The New Mutants, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, X-Force and Multiple Man to name but a few.

But perhaps the most interesting is the Kitty Pryde film, starring one of the X-Men's oldest and most popular members.

She has already had a small but significant role in various X-Men films – portrayed by Ellen Page – but she has never been the main focus of any of the stories told on the big screen. Here's everything you need to know about Kitty and what might be next for her in the movies.

Katherine Pryde was introduced in 1980's X-Men #129. She was the first character to join the team after the second wave of mutants – including favourites like Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Colossus – had become X-Men in the mid-'70s.

Just 13 years old at the time, Kitty was the only daughter of a middle-class Jewish couple from Illinois. She began to suffer alarming headaches which turned out to signal the manifestation of her mutant power to 'phase' – ie to move through solid objects.

Kitty started out as the annoying teenage sidekick with all the petty rebellions and mood swings that suggests, but her character has evolved dramatically over the years. After training with Wolverine and, er, being possessed by the spirit of an evil ninja, she became a badass fighter. She was a key member of the X-Men spin-off team Excalibur, and as she grew into one of the X-Men's longest serving members. She was even promoted to headmistress of Xavier's School for Youngsters.

She also joined the Guardians of the Galaxy for a while, travelling the universe as the replacement Star-Lord.

She's gone by various codenames including Shadowcat, Sprite and Ariel, but as they're all a bit rubbish she's usually just known as 'Kitty' (or 'Kate' if she's feeling grown up).

(Kitty also gave her name to Pryde of the X-Men, an animated show that never got further than the pilot – although it did give us this rocking theme tune.)

The Kitty Pryde movie was first rumoured in January 2018 with Deadpool director Tim Miller said to be running the show. That rumour has apparently been confirmed with the revelation that Miller is working with writer Brian Michael Bendis – a big name at Marvel Comics for the last two decades – on a film they are currently calling '143'.

1981's Uncanny X-Men #143 was an early solo adventure for Kitty, who was alone in Xavier's mansion over Christmas when it came under attack by a demon (yes, a demon – this is comics, folks).

Tim Miller originally signed on to direct Deadpool 2 before dropping out. It was always insisted that despite reports of mutual creative differences with Ryan Reynolds, there was no animosity in Miller's departure as director, and Fox hiring him for this movie seems to confirm that.

Interestingly, Bendis is gearing up to leave Marvel and start working at their rival DC Comics for the first time. He's obviously holding on to some serious affection for Kitty, a character he wrote frequently during his tenure on the X-Men comics.

Sumela Kay and Katie Stuart played her in the background of the first two X-Men films, but Ellen Page is the actor most associated with Kitty Pryde. She played her in X-Men: The Last Stand and returned in Days of Future Past. In the comic the latter was based on, she was the one to travel into the past instead of Wolverine, but in the movie it was her (nonsensical) new powers that allowed him to move through time.

Considering the wholesale rebooting and recasting that has gone on in the X-Men series, it seems unlikely that Page will return as the character again. Her recent output has been chiefly of the independent film variety, and she hasn't been talking about the movie on social media. That said, her most recent release was in the Flatliners remake, which flopped hard, and if she was looking for a return to one of her biggest roles we would hardly blame her.

As far as Fox is concerned, we would imagine them going for a younger actress like Florence Pugh, Olivia Cooke or our new favourite, Letitia Wright. 'Being the youngest X-Man' is really Kitty's USP, and without that foundation people probably won't care about her eventual transformation into a badass headteacher/space pirate. Baby steps, guys. Baby steps.

Kitty has been defined in part by some key relationships. As a youngster she became the unlikely sidekick of grumpy, murderous old Wolverine, which as we said helped contribute to her awesome fighting skills. (For fans of the '90s X-Men cartoon, the relationship between Logan and Jubilee was modelled on the Kitty/Wolverine pairing, and we saw it remixed again into the Wolverine/Rogue relationship of the first two X-Men films.)

She is also the sort-of owner of a small, purple, alien dragon called Lockheed, if one can be said to own a sentient dragon. They share a psychic bond, because this is the X-Men and of course they do.

More recently, she fell in with the Guardians of the Galaxy after falling for Star-Lord – aka Peter Quill – when their respective groups teamed up. She was even engaged to him for a time, although the marriage never came about because he's an unreliable cad.

She is currently engaged again, to her long-time crush Colossus. They have shared a tortured and long-unconsummated romance, which was interrupted by things like him being presumed dead for years, not to mention being a huge stick-in-the-mud. The fact that they met when she was 13 and he was a grown man might also explain why this took so long to come about.

In terms of the film, we would expect Lockheed to show up, because who can resist a purple dragon? Colossus would be a likely inclusion too, as he's already being played by Stefan Kapičić in Deadpool – especially if they don't rush to recast Wolverine now that Hugh Jackman has retired.

As for Star-Lord, Disney might be buying Fox, but the MCU/X-Men merger seems to be moving very slowly so they probably aren't developing the Kitty Pryde film with him in mind.

Details are short on the plans for Kitty Pryde at the moment, but we'll let you know as soon as we do hear anything.

Of all the X-men to get a movie why pick this BORE of a woman? The most exciting thing she ever did was get binded to a giant bullet flying through space.

I am shocked by the negative comments on here, I thought more people would be happy for Kitty to be getting her own movie!

Of all the female X-men, Storm is the only one worth giving a solo movie to

Jean Grey, Dazzler and Rogue at a oush, but Kitty Pryde is nothing, he ronly decent stories had better co characters in them to make them decent.

I am really, REALLY surprised that there is no announcement for a Storm solo movie. Surely she is the more worthwhile choice to get a solo outing?

Not only would it be for women, but women of colour will be represented and taking center stage in a huge blockbuster, superhero movie.

Tbh, they should just give up. Just give the rights back to Marvel Studios and let them reboot the way it is intended to. Or at least do what Sony did and work with Marvel Studios.
