BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: Tinasha 8th January 2017, 01:12 PM

The biggest chart shake up of 2017 comes from the biggest UK male artist of the moment, Mr Sheeran, making the biggest chart battle of the week being between Ed Sheeran and Ed Sheeran, as he releases not one but two singles 'Shape of You' and 'Castle of the Sky'. Elsewhere in the singles chart we should see rises into the top 10 from JP Cooper and top 40 new entries from Snakehips' new collaboration with MØ 'Don't Leave'.

As far as albums go, can YouMeAtSix knock Little Mix's four week #1 album down a place and debut at #1?

Shape of You on 83k according to OCC, Castle on the Hill not far behind, both are individually outselling the rest of the top 10 combined!

Well it's about time we had some good singles sales after how laughable they were over the usually prolific Christmas period.

Biggest selling January #1 since Babylon Zoo then?

Ed Sheeran could've released on Wednesday and made it to last week's #1 easily then!! Insane sales.

Posted by: Davidson 8th January 2017, 01:49 PM

I mean I thought Ed would have a big comeback of maybe around 150-180k but it's looking like both tracks could come close to 'Hello' like sales which is crazy. I knew he was huge but I didn't think he was quite Adele huge.

Very plausible indeed! I think though this will become a common feature in the streaming age as a lot of songs which take a while to take off on streaming would have already entered the sales top 40 back in Nov/Dec. Plus the post-Christmas flush out allows room for debuting tracks alongside all the previous years' best sellers.

Posted by: JosephStyles 8th January 2017, 02:38 PM

I think we've got a potentially very exciting chart this week, with those six new entries that Pete mentioned all being quite likely to enter, plus a potential clearout of half the top 10? ohmy.gif Double Ed is guaranteed to enter of course and then JP Cooper, Starley and Jax Jones are all potentially looking to jump in too...

Posted by: Hadji 8th January 2017, 03:36 PM

Clean Bandit could drop to #4 but #3 seems more likely

James Arthur's Impossible did 223,770 in the week of Xmas No. 1 (eventually clinched by The Justice Collective). It might beat that, so in that case it'll be the highest since Joe McElderry managed 450,838 for No. 2 being beaten by Rage Against the Machine.

Of course it won't, if it's being released in the spring rather than in the run-up to Christmas.

Posted by: 777666jason 8th January 2017, 05:51 PM

I know just curious would 1 have sold a lot more if he only released one of these singles?

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 8th January 2017, 05:54 PM

I doubt it would have made much difference sales wise i think most people are buying both songs. The only negative for Ed is he has probably knocked himself out of having another number 1 unless one knocks the other off. Great to see him having such huge sales, lets hope the album gets huge opening sales aswell.

Posted by: SKOB 8th January 2017, 07:26 PM

It's interesting to see that Ed's songs don't hurt each other. Drake and The Weeknd have released two tracks on a same day but one of the songs have always been a lot more popular than the other.

Posted by: ___∆___ 8th January 2017, 07:51 PM

Anyone know if the David Bowie EP 'No Plan' will count towards the singles or album chart (Or neither?), it has 4 tracks and is currently #2 on the iTunes album chart.

Posted by: Danuary 8th January 2017, 07:54 PM

I think 4-track EPs count toward the singles chart! Although Bowie's probably not selling enough for it to have a chance of charting officially.

If the lead track is 'Lazarus', under chart rules sales of the EP could count towards the sales of that track rather than being counted as a separate release. It depends how the OCC treat the release and / or how the record label have requested how the EP is treated.

I just hope Shape Of You prevents Castle On The Hill ever going to #1, after a couple more listens it's really turning into a fave of mine.

'Shape Of You' is clearly the bigger hit / more commercially friendly song (Capital FM are gonna start hammering it if they haven't already, I don't see them taking to 'Castle On The Hill' near as much) and I think the gap between them will grow rapidly quite soon. I hope 'Castle On The Hill' can still have a decent chart run itself though, I much prefer it (although I like both of them).

Both Shape of You and Castle On The Hill are on S on Capital and are both already being played every hour. In the rolling UK airplay Catsle on The Hill is actually higher at #29 so far with Shape Of You at #39.

Posted by: Steve201 8th January 2017, 10:17 PM

Yeh I prefer Castle on the Hill so I do - quite heavy for Ed too dare I say. The other one sounds ready made for the pop chart/commercial/capital playlist market!

Posted by: Jonjo 8th January 2017, 10:21 PM

I can see radio taking to COTH much more than SOY, but SOY will definitely resonate with the general public a lot more. I do think COTH is the better song. I like both of them, but that one has so much more repeatability for me. So I hope it can last just as long in the charts as SOY.

Fair enough, but I doubt that'll continue in the long run, especially with 'Shape Of You' already pulling ahead on iTunes/Spotify. I'd be happy to be wrong though.

'Castle On The Hill' must sound extremely out of place on Capital surely... laugh.gif

Posted by: mdh 8th January 2017, 10:32 PM

In the world of Year 13 Snapchat stories Shape Of You is already proving the more popular, although I'd assume the likes of Heart and local radio stations will take to Castle On The Hill - where as Capital are bound to prefer Shape Of You.

Posted by: Steve201 8th January 2017, 10:44 PM

Yeh COTH could do well on the AirPlay chart as radio 1&2 will play it!

Posted by: Davidson 8th January 2017, 11:44 PM

I think we need to forget about the whole "only one can do well in a dual release" mentality when looking at these two songs. They are both looking at doing 250k+ this week and both will be in the top 10 for a hell of a long time I suspect, probably for months on end. I reckon the next three or four weeks we will see Ed claiming the two top spots unless something really big comes along.

Both songs will remain two of the biggest hits of 2017, they have both already shown to be sales and streaming giants, and radio seems happy supporting both at the same time. His power is just immense.

Posted by: Tinasha 8th January 2017, 11:48 PM

Yeah, I agree with the above. I think Ed is going to occupy the top 2 officially for at least 3 weeks. Castle on The Hill may not be going to #1 this week but it's still selling a lot and has the second highest 1 day streaming record now.

Posted by: mr_pmt 9th January 2017, 12:56 AM

So, is this the modern day way of doing a double A-side?

Posted by: iain 9th January 2017, 08:33 AM

I wonder if Ed will drip release any more songs up to the release of the album. WE could potentially be looking at an Ed no 1 for some time yet if he does.

Posted by: FleetSeb 9th January 2017, 09:30 AM

Castle on the Hill sounds SO much like a Mumford & Sons second album song, starts and builds exactly the same way. And the intro to Shape of You reminds me a lot of Rockabye.

I like both, prefer COTH but can see why Shape of You is more popular as it definitely sounds more 2016/17. I reckon if they had been released in 2010-12 COTH would have been the bigger song.

Posted by: Dark Horse 9th January 2017, 10:17 AM

I wouldn't want Ed releasing anymore singles just yet, top 2 is enough, otherwise he will be occupying the top 3/5 for a few more weeks, just makes the singles chart look so boring, week on week. The more singles he releases will just make the chart more staler, other acts won't even bother.

Posted by: Karma 9th January 2017, 11:41 AM

I have to be honest, if i was Ed and his team - i would release more in the next few weeks - he would make history occupying the whole top 5 if he did release another 3 songs for example! There's no stopping him.

Yeah i agree with you there, definitely perfect strategy so far. To be honest, once the album is released the individual songs could be downloaded and streamed enough to make the singles chart anyway, and he could occupy many positions in the official top 10! ohmy.gif

This is why I actually quite liked ADELE's strategy in regards to only having the singles being promoted at the time go on streaming services and then after things have calmed down a bit put the whole album up.

I imagine if 25 was available straight away to streaming she would have had quite a few top 40 entries for a while, which might have been overkill.

It also made it more rewarding to buy the album as you felt you were getting something extra than those who would have been listening to it for free via streaming.

No chance of Ed doing anything like that of course seeing as streaming has played a huge role in the overall success of X globally. Can't imagine he would restrict access to his music in any form.

I assume so, yes, because they did Everything Has Changed a fair while before x was released. Not that this really would have any impact on whether the new album goes on streaming services or not, hasn't stopped people like Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding and Hailee Steinfeld who are in Taylor's "squad" tongue.gif

I wish Ed had released one of his singles on Christmas week, then we wouldn't have had Rockabye which is the most awful Christmas number 1 atrocity since the birth of Jesus Christ...

Just because you don't like rockabye doesn't mean it's not a good track. It's far better than all the dreary X factor winning singles and a lot of charity xmas hits. I don't particularly like Ed Sheeran so I'm glad he didn't dominate the xmas chart but unfortunately he will do now.

The first song since 2015's Xmas #1 to pass 100k paid-for sales in a week. I'd have much preferred for Ed to release one of the songs this week and one of them next week. I just hope both his songs get turns at #1. I also hope that Sean Lipa, Snakehips and MGK can remain top 40 and that Starley can remain top 10

Lovely to see it looking like we'll have 5 new tracks in the top 10 - would also be nice if The Weeknd could sneak in again! Really hoping that one of the three climbers from 7-9 can reach the top 5, that'd be cool.

Low Sales for You Me At Six in the Album update, wouldn't be surprised to see Little Mix stay at number 1 this week or even Pete Tong to steal it.

Fantastic to see George Michael and David Bowie also in the Top 5.

Disappointing sales for You Me At Six - little over 10k after three days of sales when Cavalier Youth sold 23.5k after 2 days. I should imagine Little Mix will overtake with ease. Still, it saves us, at least for a little while, from a #1 album having a big second week fall, which You Me At Six would likely have had.

Great to see such huge sales in the singles to compensate for the albums. Surely both Ed Sheeran songs are on track for an easy 200k+ each!

Flippin' 'eck! That's more chart units clocked up by Shape Of You in just three days than all but seven weeks' number ones made (in the whole week) for the entirety of last year!
And that's with one day's streaming points missing!

The George Michael L&G compilation now back in stock on Amazon and seen it in Asda today too so that accounts for it's climb.

Not really, its still a little bit tropical in a Clean Bandit sort of way (definitely not as much as most recent dance tracks though). Also it is still rather minimal too and has those infernal pitched voices. sad.gif

So glad Tom Zanetti won't be a big hit, we definitely don't need that kind of dull bassline house back after it was so dominant in 2014 and early 2015 smile.gif

Official Singles/Albums Chart Update Top 100
Source: OCC
Missing Data: Spotify (Sunday), Apple Music (Sunday)

http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-chart-update/

1 Ed Sheeran - Shape of You (112.5k) *
2 Ed Sheeran - Castle on the Hill (102.6k) *

The OCC website says that the two Ed Sheeran tracks have clocked up just under 4 million streams each.
So, if we guesstimate that figure as 3.9 million each, that means the chart units shown above include 26,000 streaming points for each song. That gives a breakdown for each song so far as;

1. Shape Of You: 86,500 sales + 26,000 streaming points = 112,500 chart units
2. Castle On The Hill: 76,600 sales + 26,000 streaming points = 102,600 chart units

This means that Shape of You has already sold more than ANY number one last year, beating Lukas Graham's best week in just three days. Castle On The Hill has almost done it too (and will do easily before Thursday night).
As Hadji says above, the next sales target to beat is the 124,340 that A Bridge Over You sold, just over 12 months ago.

The sales are still as shown, obviously, but, for the benefit of those who can't be bothered to work out the chart units, under the old 100:1 ratio, today's figures would be;

1. Shape Of You: 86,500 sales + 39,000 streaming points = 125,500 chart units
2. Castle On The Hill: 76,600 sales + 39,000 streaming points = 115,600 chart units

(Using the same assumption as above, that just under four million streams for each song so far is 3.9 million each.)

Posted by: Doctor Blind 9th January 2017, 08:13 PM

Adele was at 164.5K by the Monday in her release week (total: 332,599)

That suggests around 227K and 207K totals for Ed's singles - obviously large error bars around that.

I think, but don't quote me on it, the new ratio is making some difference, obviously there be streaming data missing from yesterday, there are a few tracks that have taken a tumble, within the top 40, for instance Justin Timberlake is down to 37 from 21, One Dance is down to 40 from 24, Hailee Steinfeld down to 30 from 18, taking those as examples, there are a few others.

Great achievement for Ed Sheeran in the singles and i welcome seeing X returning to the top 10 albums, while i know the album will eventually reach 3 million i am hoping the release of his new album will speed up the process which now looks certain.

It is wonderful to see Little Mix have another week number 1 in the album chart. This will make it week 5 which is a great achievement in itself but, particularly great for a girlband.

Let the Little Mix slayage continue.

Im surprised Bradley Walsh is still holding on so strong, i never initially thought the album would do much, i was surprised by its high debut but expected a sharp drop and that has not happened.

Those Ed Sheeran sales are wonderful,if only every number 1 sold that much it would bring back the days of how prestigious a number 1 was. Shape of You has really pulled ahead of Castle on the Hill in sales, while Shape of You will easily pass 200,000 it would be wonderful of Castle on the Hill did the same.

I suspect SOY might have managed 250k or more if COTH didn't exist. But it was a good strategy to show off two very different sides/sounds of the album.

Then again, Ed has such a high profile that the album would have sold in its hundreds of thousands first week out even if nobody had heard a note of music from it!

Yeah but he will have lost 10-20k sales due to new streaming ratio
