In this thread you'll find UK chart information for Steps as a group and soloists, including full chart runs, total sales, first week sales and certifications!
Contents: Steps - Singles Steps - Albums H & Claire - Singles H & Claire - Album Claire Richards - Singles Claire Richards - Album Lisa Scott-Lee - Singles Lisa Scott-Lee Album Faye Tozer - Single A note about the singles chart runs included in this thread: The Top 200 chart runs (from 1997, to 29th April 2001) are sourced from the "Hit Music" charts, as used by http://www.zobbel.de/ website. Beyond that date, the Top 200s are sourced from the "Official Charts Company" charts. These two charts differed. "Hit Music" chart was a Top 200 list of the best selling singles, i.e. #200 was the 200th best seller of the week. However, in the "Official Charts Company" ("OCC") chart, only the Top 75 singles were the best sellers in order; the 76-200 section featured "compressed positions", which means that certain titles were removed from the chart. OCC's old rules regarding their 76-200 section: "A single which, in the normal course of events, would appear between positions 76 and 200 of the combined Singles Chart is excluded if its sales have fallen for two or more consecutive weeks AND have fallen by more than 20% in the past week. Once excluded in this way, a record will only re-appear in the chart if its sales increase. Records excluded by this rule are shown on the printed chart report with their sales index and asterisks (***) in place of a chart position." All the Top 200 chart runs from 6th May 2001 to 10th April 2005 are from OCC's "compressed" charts, which will explain the seemingly sudden drop outs from the charts & the erratic re-entries that occur; you'll see this clearly in the chart runs of their solo releases from these years. From 5,6,7,8 (November 1997) up to the release of 'It's the Way You Make Me Feel' (January 2001) I've included the Hit Music Top 200 chart run and the Official Charts Company Top 100 chart run (as posted on their website). January 2007 marked the first time that all songs were allowed to chart if they were available to download, regardless of whether a physical format existed - 'Light Up the World' charted in 2012 with just download sales. Streaming was introduced in 2014 and quickly became the dominant form of music consumption, which affected Steps' ability to have much presence in the singles chart since their 2017 comeback. The singles chart was reduced from Top 200 to just the Top 100 from July 2017. This affected Better Best Forgotten in its 17th week on sale, which was originally shown to be #57. In February 2015, the correct chart was published via the Official Charts website, and it was revealed that 'Better Best Forgotten' should have placed at #69! I've kept the position as being #57 in its "Hit Music" chart run, but for the OCC chart run I've changed that 17th week position to #69. I wonder if the next album will hit #1. I feel like it might as long as they smash the singles out the park. I mean, I'm surprised they haven't hit #1 since their revival based on Nostalgia alone

The UK charts and sales thread is now live!
I've completed the Steps singles and albums sections. I've yet to do the solo entries, but that shouldn't take too long. If you spot any mistakes or have any info that isn't included, please let me know! Feel free to reply to this thread to comment about their UK chart runs/sales. |

Heartbeat/Tragedy total sales are a bit of a mystery...
OCC stated 1.16m as its total in March 2017, but also listed download sales of the two songs as being 50,500 combined, making it 1.21m overall... but that's not how sales work for Double A sides. Only one song's download sales contributes to a Double A side single's overall sales. In September 2017, in OCC's Millionaires list, they gave overall sales as being 1,253,389 - but again, this seems to include downloads of both Heartbeat and Tragedy, and maybe streaming data from both as them as well. In November 2020, the OCC went back to stating 1.16m as the single's sales - the same figure as March 2017. Heartbeat/Tragedy has yet to be certified 2xPlatinum (1.2m). My theory is that only Heartbeat's downloads/streams are included in the Double A side's totals, which would explain why it's still not managed to reach 1.2m. Heartbeat has had less than 2 million streams on Spotify worldwide. I'm guessing that Tragedy downloads/streams are going towards a separate Tragedy entry in their database. It'll be interesting to see whether at some point in time we'll see that song certify Silver in its own right. ------ Pre-2013, certifications for singles and albums were based on shipments, not sales. Quite a few Steps releases benefited from this. Better Best Forgotten and Say You'll Be Mine/Better the Devil You Know are both Gold certified, but have sold less than 400,000. After the Love Has Gone is Silver but probably hasn't reached 200,000 sales. Step One is 5xPlatinum (1.5m+ shipments), but its sales total is 1.4m. Gold is 4xPlat (1.2m) but as of April 2017 it had sold 1.13m. Its total sales stalled for years because of The Ultimate Collection, but since that album was removed from digital platforms I'm assuming that Gold will be benefiting and should exceed 1.2m eventually. |

Big thanks for old sales numbers from pre-digital days.
Always wanted to know the sales of my favourite singles from 1999-2003 years. This post has been edited by Last Dreamer: 28th April 2021, 11:55 AM |

This is fantastic Jay, thank you. I remember following the UK charts back in this time and this is a great flashback! It takes me right back to those days too! I've now edited in info for H & Claire, Lisa and Faye... unfortunately there's barely any sales information, and what I did find for DJ and Lately is very old. I just need to edit in Claire Richards information soon - not sure how well or not she did in the download charts with her singles! Lol at the H & Claire album being certified Silver - their label must have really overestimated demand for it. I doubt its first week sales were any higher than 15,000. |
