7th May 1989
A second and final week on top for the Bee Gees while Stevie Nicks biggest solo hit fires up at 2, closely followed by Transvision Vamp’s 2nd Top 10, and Edelweiss’ novelty Abba tune at 7, and The Cure’s return to the 10 after a few relative failures, gives them 7 Top 10’s and 14 hits in 9 years. Sam Brown gets her witness to confirm she’s gone from 70 to 14, while Bobby Brown gets a high entry at 20 with the great dance track Every Little Step, only 6 years since he was in New Edition with a voice that hadn’t broken. Macca’s up to 22 putting on a brave face at not being in the 20 yet, while Debbie Gibson is electrifying at 29 (not really!) and Rod just can’t say no at 33 (I think we all knew that already). Cyndi meanwhile drove all night to get to 37 and De La Soul annoyingly just miss the 40 at 41 with me, myself and I. I lie, it was them, not me. Two legends struggle with new singles, Stevie Wonder and Queen, not to mention Morrissey’s not-so interesting drug, leaving PIL disappointed at 61 11 years on from their debut hit. Meanwhile comebacks from ABC and Diana Ross, Animotion’s follow-up to Number One Obsession 3 years late, Bon Jovi, Natalie Cole and Carly Simon all slip in amongst the much superior Manchild from Neneh Cherry, a lovely record. 1 ( 1 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 2 ( 24 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 3 ( 2 ) ETERNAL FLAME The Bangles 4 ( 8 ) THE LOOK Roxette 5 ( 13 ) BABY I DON'T CARE Transvision Vamp 6 ( 10 ) BEDS ARE BURNING Midnight Oil 7 ( 30 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 8 ( 3 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 9 ( 5 ) GOOD THING Fine Young Cannibals 10 ( 16 ) LULLABY The Cure 11 ( 4 ) AMERICANOS Holly Johnson 12 ( 25 ) I'M EVERY WOMAN '89 Chaka Khan 13 ( 19 ) YOU ON MY MIND Swing Out Sister 14 ( 70 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 15 ( 11 ) WHO'S IN THE HOUSE Beatmasters featuring Merlin 16 ( 9 ) I BEG YOUR PARDON Kon Kan 17 ( 17 ) REQUIEM The London Boys 18 ( 7 ) GOT TO KEEP ON The Cookie Crew featuring Edwin Starr 19 ( 6 ) GET BACK The Beatles with Billy Preston 20 ( NEW ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 21 ( 12 ) OF COURSE I'M LYING Yello 22 ( 31 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 23 ( 14 ) PEOPLE HOLD ON Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield 24 ( 71 ) HAND ON YOUR HEART Kylie Minogue 25 ( 33 ) I WON'T BACK DOWN Tom Petty 26 ( 21 ) THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL Donna Summer 27 ( 39 ) WHERE HAS ALL THE LOVE GONE Yazz 28 ( 15 ) AIN'T NOBODY BETTER Inner City 29 ( 46 ) ELECTRIC YOUTH Debbie Gibson 30 ( 26 ) STOP! 14th May 1989
Stevie Nicks gets her only solo Number One, to add to her 2 Fleetwood Mac chart-toppers in 1979 and 1987, though she’d written many that came close for Mac, and deserves more. Bobby Brown steps up to 3, and Chaka Khan takes her 1978 Top 20 hit further second-time round and goes to 4 albeit in plinkety-plonk 1989 stylee, as remixing oldies (and not improving them in retrospect) continues as the rage: witness Style Council’s classic 1983 Long Hot summer at 14, and Gibson Brothers 1979 Que Sera Mi Vida at 18. Macca goes top 10, Neneh Top 40, and highest proper new entry at 38 is the fab Pink Sunshine giving Fuzzbox two pop gems in a row. Eddy Grant takes his own cover of his song covered and a hit for Rockers Revenge in 1982 in to the Top 40 - Walkin’ On Sunshine, for 20 years of hits. Flicking through the other new entries though I’m not inspired to wax lyrical on the quality music being produced, or nostalgia tinting my appreciation - frankly, it was a music scene desperately in need of a new youth movement. The old-timers were dominating my chart, give or take the odd OK dance track. Topping the real chart were charity records like Ferry Cross The Mersey, a great 60’s song and fave from my days living in Liverpool. One of my friends has a relative who died at Hillsborough, so I know what it means in Merseyside, and approve of the sentiment. 1 ( 2 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 2 ( 1 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 3 ( 20 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 4 ( 12 ) I'M EVERY WOMAN '89 Chaka Khan 5 ( 7 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 6 ( 3 ) ETERNAL FLAME The Bangles 7 ( 4 ) THE LOOK Roxette 8 ( 22 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 9 ( 5 ) BABY I DON'T CARE Transvision Vamp 10 ( 13 ) YOU ON MY MIND Swing Out Sister 11 ( 14 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 12 ( 6 ) BEDS ARE BURNING Midnight Oil 13 ( 8 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 14 ( NEW ) THE LONG HOT SUMMER 89 The Style Council 15 ( 9 ) GOOD THING Fine Young Cannibals 16 ( 24 ) HAND ON YOUR HEART Kylie Minogue 17 ( 11 ) AMERICANOS Holly Johnson 18 ( NEW ) QUE SERA MI VIDA 89 The Gibson Brothers 19 ( 17 ) REQUIEM The London Boys 20 ( 27 ) WHERE HAS ALL THE LOVE GONE Yazz 21 ( 16 ) I BEG YOUR PARDON Kon Kan 22 ( 10 ) LULLABY The Cure 23 ( 29 ) ELECTRIC YOUTH Debbie Gibson 24 ( 25 ) I WON'T BACK DOWN Tom Petty 25 ( 18 ) GOT TO KEEP ON The Cookie Crew featuring Edwin Starr 26 ( 15 ) WHO'S IN THE HOUSE Beatmasters featuring Merlin 27 ( 21 ) OF COURSE I'M LYING Yello 28 ( 42 ) ELISABETH'S EYES Nik Kershaw 29 ( 33 ) MY HEART CAN'T TELL YOU NO Rod Stewart 30 ( 19 ) GET BACK The Beatles with Billy Preston 31 ( 26 ) THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL Donna Summer 32 ( 71 ) I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU Bon Jovi 33 ( 23 ) PEOPLE HOLD ON Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield 34 ( 72 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 35 ( 31 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 36 ( 30 ) STOP! Another new number one, Bobby Brown for the first time, while Paul McCartney goes Top 3 not for the first time - but for 21 years to date. The Style Council go Top 5 for the second time with Long Hot Summer, while Gibson Brothers go higher than they did first time round for a third Top 10 hit. Sealed With A Kiss is back - not the top 5 1975 reissue of the Brian Hyland original, though, it’s an inferior identical Jason Donovan cover nestling cosily next to Kylie at 13. Neneh goes to 15, Fuzzbox 20, and Cappella debut at 27 to kickstart a 90’s dance run of hits. Madonna’s back, and with a great single, expressing herself at 37, showcasing what a great album Like A Prayer is, chock full of great tracks. Robert Palmer’s in at 39, Malcolm McLaren is waltzing at 47 - he did like mixing his musical styles - and Sinitta butchers another 1975 classic at 51. SAW obviously flicking through Hits of 1975 looking for ideas. Enya waethers some storms in Africa at 70, a pleasant new entry, and The Jacksons are back - minus Michael - sounding more like Janet than Michael. The Bible take a visit to Graceland, in the footsteps of Paul Simon presumably, but their track is pretty good. 1 ( 3 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 2 ( 1 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 3 ( 8 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 4 ( 11 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 5 ( 14 ) THE LONG HOT SUMMER 89 The Style Council 6 ( 2 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 7 ( 4 ) I'M EVERY WOMAN '89 Chaka Khan 8 ( 5 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 9 ( 18 ) QUE SERA MI VIDA 89 The Gibson Brothers 10 ( 7 ) THE LOOK Roxette 11 ( 6 ) ETERNAL FLAME The Bangles 12 ( NEW ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 13 ( 16 ) HAND ON YOUR HEART Kylie Minogue 14 ( 12 ) BEDS ARE BURNING Midnight Oil 15 ( 34 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 16 ( 10 ) YOU ON MY MIND Swing Out Sister 17 ( 24 ) I WON'T BACK DOWN Tom Petty 18 ( 15 ) GOOD THING Fine Young Cannibals 19 ( 9 ) BABY I DON'T CARE Transvision Vamp 20 ( 38 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 21 ( 13 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 22 ( 17 ) AMERICANOS Holly Johnson 23 ( 23 ) ELECTRIC YOUTH Debbie Gibson 24 ( 52 ) FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden & Stock, Aitken & Waterman 25 ( 37 ) I DROVE ALL NIGHT Cyndi Lauper 26 ( 21 ) I BEG YOUR PARDON Kon Kan 27 ( NEW ) HELLYOM HABIB Cappella 28 ( 19 ) REQUIEM The London Boys 29 ( 67 ) VOICES OF BABYLON The Outfield 30 ( 39 ) WALKIN' ON SUNSHINE Eddy Grant 31 ( 25 ) GOT TO KEEP ON The Cookie Crew featuring Edwin Starr 32 ( 20 ) WHERE HAS ALL THE LOVE GONE Yazz 33 ( 40 ) ONE BETTER WORLD ABC 34 ( 26 ) WHO'S IN THE HOUSE Beatmasters featuring Merlin 35 ( 42 ) MY TELEPHONE Coldcut 36 ( 49 ) DISAPPOINTED Public Image Limited 37 ( NEW ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 38 ( 27 ) OF COURSE I'M LYING Yello 39 ( NEW ) CHANGE HIS WAYS Robert Palmer 40 ( 47 ) FREE Stevie Wonder 41 ( 36 ) STOP! Another week another new number one, and Paul McCartney’s first to go beyond runners-up spot since Mull Of Kintyre - he’d had at least 5 peak at 2 in between - which makes it an 11-year gap, though it was also his 5th chart-topper since the Beatles split and a minor pop gem. Madonna meanwhile gets another top 5 with a bullet, and Guns ‘n’ Roses classic 1988 single is reissued and comes back with a bang at 6, beating it’s original peak of 12. Yet another remix, yet another oldie hit, this time M and Pop Musik at 15. Happily, it was already synthtastic and the remix didn’t mess it up too much, so 10 years on a hit all over again. Neneh Cherry and Fuzzbox get 2 top 10’s in a row, Tone Loc gets all funky rocketing up to 19, and Donna Summer meets SAW and follows-up her great topper with I Don’t Wanna Get Hurt at 22. James Bond time = hit single, invariably, and this time Licence To Kill gives Gladys Knight a welcome chart return at 39 for a 17-year run and a great Bond theme tune. The Beautiful South debut lowly - although it’s really The Housemartins Plus and Minus members (notably minus Norman Cook) - and Youssou N’Dour debuts with Peter Gabriel. One of those three acts would get a 90’s chart-topper. Hint: Senegal. UB40 keep their run of hits up to 9 years non-stop and Led Zep enter. Actually, unlike the fabulous CCS hit version, this version of Whole Lotta Love is a plodding 80’s dance version. 75 is about right... On the social front I had two concerts this week in 1989: Bananarama live in Southampton, though not the full Siobhan-inclusive line-up, this is the post-SAW version, which meant they had a good 8 years of hits to do, and they did them very well, surpassing my expectations actually. The concert details have faded a bit from memory (and I’m not digging out the notes of the time, will do that someday), but I recall it being camp, dancing-heavy and great fun. Top songs on the night? 1. Venus 2. Cruel Summer 3. Love Truth And Honesty The other concert was at Wembley Arena, Elton John in concert. It was my sister-in-law’s birthday and she’d never been to a concert so it was a treat for her and for my mum (who’d also never been to one). Elton was having a low period of success (“my last album went cardboard” he quipped) quite undeservedly (he hit the big time again a year later), but he gave a great concert. Nik Kershaw was support, I’d seen him in 1984 when he was a current pop star, now his career was struggling a bit, but it boosted his current single in my charts. The stars were out in force for Elton though (we sat a few rows away from Phil Collin) and he ran through a selection of classic hits, was amusing, and was fabulous. Top 3 tracks? 1. Philadelphia Freedom 2. I’m Still Standing 3. Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word. The last one was a surprise as it’d never been a particular fave of mine... 1 ( 3 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 2 ( 2 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 3 ( 1 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 4 ( 37 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 5 ( 4 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 6 ( NEW ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 7 ( 15 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 8 ( 6 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 9 ( 5 ) THE LONG HOT SUMMER 89 The Style Council 10 ( 20 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 11 ( 12 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 12 ( 10 ) THE LOOK Roxette 13 ( 7 ) I'M EVERY WOMAN '89 Chaka Khan 14 ( 8 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 15 ( NEW ) POP MUSIK '89 M 16 ( 13 ) HAND ON YOUR HEART Kylie Minogue 17 ( 25 ) I DROVE ALL NIGHT Cyndi Lauper 18 ( 9 ) QUE SERA MI VIDA 89 The Gibson Brothers 19 ( 60 ) FUNKY COLD MEDINA Tone Loc 20 ( 14 ) BEDS ARE BURNING Midnight Oil 21 ( 11 ) ETERNAL FLAME The Bangles 22 ( NEW ) I DON'T WANNA GET HURT Donna Summer 23 ( 17 ) I WON'T BACK DOWN Tom Petty 24 ( 35 ) MY TELEPHONE Coldcut 25 ( 27 ) HELLYOM HABIB Cappella 26 ( 45 ) ELISABETH'S EYES Nik Kershaw 27 ( 47 ) WALTZ DARLING Malcolm McLaren 28 ( 24 ) FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden & Stock, Aitken & Waterman 29 ( 68 ) NOTHIN' (THAT COMPARES 2 U) The Jacksons 30 ( 33 ) ONE BETTER WORLD ABC 31 ( 21 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 32 ( 18 ) GOOD THING Fine Young Cannibals 33 ( 51 ) RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM Sinitta 34 ( 16 ) YOU ON MY MIND Swing Out Sister 35 ( 30 ) WALKIN' ON SUNSHINE Eddy Grant 36 ( 39 ) CHANGE HIS WAYS Robert Palmer 37 ( 22 ) AMERICANOS Holly Johnson 38 ( 29 ) VOICES OF BABYLON The Outfield 39 ( NEW ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 40 ( 49 ) I WANT IT ALL Queen 41 ( NEW ) FOREVER YOUR GIRL Paula Abdul 42 ( 26 ) I BEG YOUR PARDON Kon Kan 43 ( NEW ) SAY IT'S NOT TOO LATE Matt Bianco 44 ( 19 ) BABY I DON'T CARE Transvision Vamp 45 ( 42 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 46 ( 41 ) STOP! The run of one-weekers on top continues as Guns ‘n’ Roses finally get that rock classic to the top, Sweet Child ‘o’ Mine is still an awesome record. Sealed With A Kiss makes my top 10 for the second time, this time for Jason Donovan, but not as high as Brian Hyland’s version. M, meantime also get a second run in the top 10, Popping upwards. Bananarama’s 1983 goodie is also back, as Cruel Summer ’89 heads into the 20 for the second time, highest new entry at 18, just ahead of Gladys Knight’s Bond theme goodie. That gave her 17 years of top 20 hits. In at 36, Soul II Soul’s 2nd hit is a bonafide classic, Back To Life shuffling it’s way gloriously in as the highest actual “new” new entry. Big leaps for UB40, up to 32, ever-chartbound in the 80’s and 90’s, well, I will do for you, I daresay. Two great follow-up singles from The Bangles and The Bee Gees enter into the 50, both fell far short of the UK chart positions they deserved, but happily did better here. Meanwhile Prince’s Batman movie theme enters at 60, though it’s more of a montage than a song. Cliff’s back with a Richard Marx song for his 100th single, I think it was. Despite the claim of the lyric it really wasn’t the Best of him. U2 meanwhile scrape in with a track that’s also not even the best track on the album, ballad All I Want Is You, though it’s not bad. 1 ( 6 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 2 ( 4 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 3 ( 1 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 4 ( 3 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 5 ( 2 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 6 ( 7 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 7 ( 5 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 8 ( 11 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 9 ( 10 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 10 ( 15 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 11 ( 8 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 12 ( 17 ) I DROVE ALL NIGHT Cyndi Lauper 13 ( 9 ) THE LONG HOT SUMMER 89 The Style Council 14 ( 19 ) FUNKY COLD MEDINA Tone Loc 15 ( 22 ) I DON'T WANNA GET HURT Donna Summer 16 ( 12 ) THE LOOK Roxette 17 ( 24 ) MY TELEPHONE Coldcut 18 ( NEW ) CRUEL SUMMER '89 Bananarama 19 ( 39 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 20 ( 29 ) NOTHIN' (THAT COMPARES 2 U) The Jacksons 21 ( 13 ) I'M EVERY WOMAN '89 Chaka Khan 22 ( 14 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 23 ( 27 ) WALTZ DARLING Malcolm McLaren 24 ( 18 ) QUE SERA MI VIDA 89 The Gibson Brothers 25 ( 23 ) I WON'T BACK DOWN Tom Petty 26 ( 20 ) BEDS ARE BURNING Midnight Oil 27 ( 30 ) ONE BETTER WORLD ABC 28 ( 33 ) RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM Sinitta 29 ( RE ) DOWNTOWN One 2 Many 30 ( 16 ) HAND ON YOUR HEART Kylie Minogue 31 ( 21 ) ETERNAL FLAME The Bangles 32 ( 71 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 33 ( 36 ) CHANGE HIS WAYS Robert Palmer 34 ( 25 ) HELLYOM HABIB Cappella 35 ( 31 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 36 ( NEW ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 37 ( 41 ) FOREVER YOUR GIRL Paula Abdul 38 ( 28 ) FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden & Stock, Aitken & Waterman 39 ( 58 ) SONG FOR WHOEVER The Beautiful South 40 ( 35 ) WALKIN' ON SUNSHINE Eddy Grant 41 ( 26 ) ELISABETH'S EYES Nik Kershaw 42 ( 32 ) GOOD THING Fine Young Cannibals 43 ( 43 ) SAY IT'S NOT TOO LATE Matt Bianco 44 ( NEW ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 45 ( 37 ) AMERICANOS Holly Johnson 46 ( NEW ) ONE The Bee Gees 47 ( 45 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 48 ( NEW ) GOOD GOOD FEELING Eric and The Good Good Feeling 49 ( 60 ) JUST KEEP ROCKIN' Double Trouble 50 ( 46 ) STOP! 11th June 1989 A batch of oldies back again, joining the oldies and remixes already in the chart, topped by the Beatles, in at 1 with The Ballad Of John And Yoko for it’s 20th birthday re-issue. First-time round I loved it but it didn’t quite get to the top, although it topped my oldies chart in 1976 when the Beatles re-issue invasion forced me to banish most of them to a separate chart, but justice served anyway at last. Joining the Fabs, Carly Simon’s Chic-tastic Why pops back into the top 10 7 years on. And Why not, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were fab. In 1989 proper, though, Tone Loc goes Top 10 funkily, while back in 1983 mode the Nana’s improve on first-time round at 8 with their great Cruel Summer. Big climber for The Bee Gees One, up 30 places to 16 ahead of Malcolm McLaren’s waltzing, darling, and Nik Kershaw’s Elisabeth’s Eyes, one of his better singles but the ever-fickle pop-chart had decided he was yesterday’s news by now. Clannad and Bono duet on a moody Celtic ballad and are rewarded with yet another oldie (1985) re-charting. REM sprint in with some Orange Crush, one of their great early singles, at 38. 10,000 Maniacs were an under-rated band, and the sweet Trouble Me pops in at 73, just behind follow-up singles for Holly Johnson and Transvision Vamp. All the oldies, though, suggest a music scene still gagging for some excitement.... 1 ( NEW ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 2 ( 1 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 3 ( 2 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 4 ( 6 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 5 ( 4 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 6 ( 8 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 7 ( 10 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 8 ( 18 ) CRUEL SUMMER '89 Bananarama 9 ( 14 ) FUNKY COLD MEDINA Tone Loc 10 ( NEW ) WHY Carly Simon 11 ( 5 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 12 ( 3 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 13 ( 9 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 14 ( 7 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 15 ( 15 ) I DON'T WANNA GET HURT Donna Summer 16 ( 46 ) ONE The Bee Gees 17 ( 23 ) WALTZ DARLING Malcolm McLaren 18 ( 41 ) ELISABETH'S EYES Nik Kershaw 19 ( 19 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 20 ( 12 ) I DROVE ALL NIGHT Cyndi Lauper 21 ( 11 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 22 ( 16 ) THE LOOK Roxette 23 ( 29 ) DOWNTOWN One 2 Many 24 ( 36 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 25 ( 13 ) THE LONG HOT SUMMER 89 The Style Council 26 ( 28 ) RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM Sinitta 27 ( 32 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 28 ( 44 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 29 ( 17 ) MY TELEPHONE Coldcut 30 ( NEW ) IN A LIFETIME Clannad and Bono 31 ( 20 ) NOTHIN' (THAT COMPARES 2 U) The Jacksons 32 ( 31 ) ETERNAL FLAME The Bangles 33 ( 21 ) I'M EVERY WOMAN '89 Chaka Khan 34 ( 37 ) FOREVER YOUR GIRL Paula Abdul 35 ( NEW ) JOY AND PAIN Donna Allen 36 ( NEW ) ROCK ON (SHEP PETTIBONE MIX) David Essex 37 ( 22 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 38 ( 39 ) SONG FOR WHOEVER The Beautiful South 39 ( NEW ) ORANGE JUICE REM 40 ( 71 ) THE BEST OF ME Cliff Richard 41 ( 35 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 42 ( 25 ) I WON'T BACK DOWN Tom Petty 43 ( 49 ) JUST KEEP ROCKIN' Double Trouble 44 ( 26 ) BEDS ARE BURNING Midnight Oil 45 ( 24 ) QUE SERA MI VIDA 89 The Gibson Brothers 46 ( 56 ) STORMS IN AFRICA PART II Enya 47 ( 27 ) ONE BETTER WORLD ABC 48 ( 48 ) GOOD GOOD FEELING Eric and The Good Good Feeling 49 ( 61 ) VOICES OF BABYLON The Outfield 50 ( 47 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 51 ( 33 ) CHANGE HIS WAYS Robert Palmer 52 ( 50 ) STOP! Things pick up a bit this week, as Madonna goes one higher than classic Like A Prayer managed, getting her 6th Number One in just over 5 years with Express Yourself, a great pop dance track. The Bangles also peaked at 2 with their classic Eternal Flame, but follow-up Be With You rockets to 4 in compensation. Donna Summer meanwhile follows-up her SAW number one with a SAW number 10 for 12 years-worth of them. Soul II Soul represent the new sound of British Urban soul, shooting to 9 as they come Back To Life. Back to reality? It’s a welcome breath of fresh air, though Danny Wilson also herald in the new sounds a-coming with Second Summer Of Love at 61, 2 years on from Mary’s Prayer. Gladys Knight is the last new Top Tenner, her final Bond fling in her occasional big time hits over 16 years. Highest new entry is the fabulous Pet Shop Boys at 19, a remixed shortened version of the epic album cover version of a Sterling Void political song. Neil Tennant added in another verse dealing with environmental issues to give a powerful single. PSB nay-sayers, as always, completely miss the point (“they all sound the same”). No they don’t. Pet Shop Boys records cover a wealth of (sometimes eternal) topics, literate, intelligent, inventive, and if you pay attention, no they don’t all sound the same. They just have the same lead singer and are based in dance. Clannad and Bono go top 20 as U2 stay away from it. Living In A Box have another go with the withdrawn Gatecrashing (following the Hillsborough tragedy), and REM get a Top 20 hit ahead of Prince who suddenly Batdances to 22. The Batusi, I assume. Holly Johnson gets a 3rd Top 40 solo hit, Enya gets another too, and Suzi Quatro pops in at 39 with Baby You’re A Star, her first Top 40 hit in years to give her 16 years of them in the week oldie If You Can’t Give Me Love was my non-chart oldie of the week. Baby Ford covers T.Rex at 60, Jennifer Rush-es back with Placido Domingo for a bit of class-ical 4 years on from Power Of Love. Then the rockers return, with Queen, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Vixen hogging the lower-end new entries, all of them fine, but not classic, rock. 1 ( 3 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 2 ( 1 ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 3 ( 2 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 4 ( 28 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 5 ( 6 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 6 ( 9 ) FUNKY COLD MEDINA Tone Loc 7 ( 10 ) WHY Carly Simon 8 ( 19 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 9 ( 24 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 10 ( 15 ) I DON'T WANNA GET HURT Donna Summer 11 ( 4 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 12 ( 5 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 13 ( 17 ) WALTZ DARLING Malcolm McLaren 14 ( 8 ) CRUEL SUMMER '89 Bananarama 15 ( 13 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 16 ( 16 ) ONE The Bee Gees 17 ( 30 ) IN A LIFETIME Clannad and Bono 18 ( 11 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 19 ( NEW ) IT'S ALRIGHT Pet Shop Boys 20 ( 39 ) ORANGE JUICE REM 21 ( 23 ) DOWNTOWN One 2 Many 22 ( 59 ) BATDANCE Prince 23 ( 14 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 24 ( 12 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 25 ( 20 ) I DROVE ALL NIGHT Cyndi Lauper 26 ( 70 ) WALKIN' ON SUNSHINE Eddy Grant 27 ( 43 ) JUST KEEP ROCKIN' Double Trouble and the Rebel MC 28 ( 35 ) JOY AND PAIN Donna Allen 29 ( 7 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 30 ( 68 ) ATOMIC CITY Holly Johnson 31 ( 18 ) ELISABETH'S EYES Nik Kershaw 32 ( RE ) GATECRASHING Living In A Box 33 ( 21 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 34 ( RE ) SPIRIT OF THE FOREST Spirit Of The Forest 35 ( 46 ) STORMS IN AFRICA PART II Enya 36 ( 40 ) THE BEST OF ME Cliff Richard 37 ( 22 ) THE LOOK Roxette 38 ( 71 ) THE ONLY ONE Transvision Vamp 39 ( NEW ) BABY YOU'RE A STAR Suzi Quatro 40 ( 25 ) THE LONG HOT SUMMER 89 The Style Council 41 ( 32 ) ETERNAL FLAME The Bangles 42 ( 27 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 43 ( 37 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 44 ( 41 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 45 ( 38 ) SONG FOR WHOEVER The Beautiful South 46 ( 26 ) RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM Sinitta 47 ( 36 ) ROCK ON (SHEP PETTIBONE MIX) David Essex 48 ( 55 ) CRY Waterfront 49 ( 33 ) I'M EVERY WOMAN '89 Chaka Khan 50 ( RE ) CALLING OUT TO CAROL Stan Ridgeway 51 ( 29 ) MY TELEPHONE Coldcut 52 ( 50 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 53 ( 34 ) FOREVER YOUR GIRL Paula Abdul 54 ( 42 ) I WON'T BACK DOWN Tom Petty 55 ( 54 ) HEY JUDE The Beatles 56 ( 52 ) STOP! 25th June 1989
It’s a shock new Number One, keeping off my beloved Pet Shop Boys at 2, and it’s Michael Jackson’s Bad album track. Two years on, the album that was my 1987 USA holiday album, along with Pet Shop Boys, Actually, and singles are still coming off it - while the PSB’s are into their next album (and there were plenty more worthy singles on Actually). Librarian Girl, actually it was a sweet superstar-full cameo video that made it excusable, that, and the fact that it had originally been one of my fave tracks on the album. It still felt like an oldie though, which is why it could enter at 1, being as I’d already been very familiar with it for 2 years. It's also MJ's 16th chart-topper in various guises in 19 years. Spirit Of The Forest meanwhile rocket to 3, as an all-star charity record fails to have the same impact as others. A tree-huggers new age wanna-be anthem. That’ll be me then, cos every warning that was given then has come true in spades since. Or, more accurately, in buzzsaws since. Money rules everything and damn the consequences. All those Sting-quipping, Bono-hating, cynical do-nothing-but-whinge-about-those-that-try-to-do-something crap stand-ups can just piss off. The record's not as good as it's intentions though, not even with Kate Bush on it. I refer back to the previous weeks Pet Shop Boys song comments, they do it WAY better. Kudos though, to all those involved. Talking of Bono, he’s back again with U2 as well as Clannad. Bee Gees and Prince get their umpteenth Top 10 hit, the Gibbs being at 2 in my first-ever chart in 1968, but looking for One this time. Talking of Prince, highest new entry is Sheena Easton, 9 years on from being a Modern Girl, and looking very different. 101 is her best record. It should have been massive. Prince wrote and produced it, and it sounds like classic Prince, moody, percussive, building to a climax, and Sheena certainly has one at the end. Fab. Lots of records upping and downing and back-upping - I have no idea why, to be honest, it looks like I’m all over the place emotionally still. UB40 go top 20, Rufus and Chaka remix it back 5 years on and Ain’t Nobody can argue with that at 26. Baby Ford’s Second-summer-of-love dance version of T.Rex shoots to 33, just behind similarly-titled Danny Wilson’s popfun at 29. At 45, the much-missed great Kirsty Maccoll covers the Kinks Days, and improves on it. Simply Red switch to cha-cha rhythms at 53, while Eartha Kitt and Bronski Beat actually quote them at 74. The great Rev. Al Green is back for one of his occasional comebacks outside the church at 63, 18 years on from his great debut. Finally it’s Tin Machine at 71. Eh? David Bowie. 71 is about right.... 1 ( NEW ) LIBERIAN GIRL Michael Jackson 2 ( 19 ) IT'S ALRIGHT Pet Shop Boys 3 ( 34 ) SPIRIT OF THE FOREST Spirit Of The Forest 4 ( 4 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 5 ( 9 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 6 ( 22 ) BATDANCE Prince 7 ( 8 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 8 ( 2 ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 9 ( 1 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 10 ( 16 ) ONE The Bee Gees 11 ( 29 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 12 ( 3 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 13 ( 17 ) IN A LIFETIME Clannad and Bono 14 ( 5 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 15 ( 13 ) WALTZ DARLING Malcolm McLaren 16 ( NEW ) 101" Sheena Easton 17 ( 11 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 18 ( 15 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 19 ( 28 ) JOY AND PAIN Donna Allen 20 ( 42 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 21 ( 7 ) WHY Carly Simon 22 ( 12 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 23 ( 32 ) GATECRASHING Living In A Box 24 ( 6 ) FUNKY COLD MEDINA Tone Loc 25 ( 25 ) I DROVE ALL NIGHT Cyndi Lauper 26 ( NEW ) AIN'T NOBODY '89 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan 27 ( 10 ) I DON'T WANNA GET HURT Donna Summer 28 ( 30 ) ATOMIC CITY Holly Johnson 29 ( 61 ) SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE Danny Wilson 30 ( 18 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 31 ( 14 ) CRUEL SUMMER '89 Bananarama 32 ( 27 ) JUST KEEP ROCKIN' Double Trouble and the Rebel MC 33 ( 60 ) CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION Baby Ford 34 ( 21 ) DOWNTOWN One 2 Many 35 ( 20 ) ORANGE JUICE REM 36 ( 23 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 37 ( 39 ) BABY YOU'RE A STAR Suzi Quatro 38 ( 74 ) BREAKTHRU Queen 39 ( 24 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 40 ( 48 ) CRY Waterfront 41 ( NEW ) DEAD HEART Midnight Oil 42 ( 33 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 43 ( 26 ) WALKIN' ON SUNSHINE Eddy Grant 44 ( 50 ) CALLING OUT TO CAROL Stan Ridgeway 45 ( NEW ) DAYS Kirsty Maccoll 46 ( 44 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 47 ( 38 ) THE ONLY ONE Transvision Vamp 48 ( 31 ) ELISABETH'S EYES Nik Kershaw 49 ( 63 ) TILL I LOVED YOU Placido Domingo and Jennifer Rush 50 ( 40 ) THE LONG HOT SUMMER 89 The Style Council 51 ( 37 ) THE LOOK Roxette 52 ( 41 ) ETERNAL FLAME The Bangles 53 ( NEW ) A NEW FLAME Simply Red 54 ( 57 ) TROUBLE ME 10,000 Maniacs 55 ( 52 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 56 ( 55 ) HEY JUDE The Beatles 57 ( 36 ) THE BEST OF ME Cliff Richard 58 ( 43 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 59 ( NEW ) LOOKING FOR A LOVE Joyce Sims 60 ( 59 ) LITTLE LIES Fleetwood Mac 61 ( 56 ) STOP! A 10-years-old track (albeit remixed) goes one place higher 2nd time around, as Pop Musik tops for Robin Scott aka M. Quite right too! Still, he had his other job in Bond movies to keep him going in between hits. Sheena Easton breaks into the top 3 for the first time with Prince’s 101 and a sexy image, something that seemed most unlikely when she was the wholesome Modern Girl in jumpers in 1980. Baby Ford takes T.Rex into the 20, and Danny Wilson bring the Second Summer Of Love in too, while new (to my charts) Ella Fitzgerald’s classic version of the brilliant standard Summertime enters at 26, 7 years after Fun Boy Three last charted it. Just behind are the London Boys, and their best record, London Nights, while Queen Breakthru into the 30 at 29. Yello have a great new entry at 52 (Blazing Saddles) while yet another SAW act, Sonia, belts in at 49. Some good low entries though, for Swing Out Sister, Gloria Estefan and Bobby Brown, all going higher, and one which wasn’t - Public Enemy’s Fight The Power. I wasn’t a huge fan of their confrontational rap, and the lack of airplay meant I never really got a chance to reconsider - which is deservedly far more well-known and respected now than it was in 1989. So, my life, taken from actual diary notes? I’ll try to be interesting, as I was working on a temporary contract surveying Parks, with local Councils mid-way through a major Thatcher-imposed reorganisation and tendering processes. Cost savings were the aim - but awful standards tended to follow in the 90’s for those Council’s that prepared rubbish contractor-friendly contracts, as they just stuck to the word of the contract and charged for all sorts of extras. Our Council was actually very well prepared with a fairly water-tight one carried out by ex-council-staff (those left at any rate after job-cuts). So, everyone I worked with was getting itchy feet and applying for jobs, I played tennis; had a dilemma about forthcoming strike-action (being one of the few union people, while also being aware I was on a temporary contract...); my sis-in-law and 6-year-old niece Vicki, 4-year-old nephew Gavin were living with me (and wearing me out!), Vicki needed hospital treatment for a hearing problem; I got a new comics fanzine to read, Inertron, having recently joined-up, and as it turns out shortly to split acrimoniously in two, with Legion Of Super Heroes fans setting up their own fanzine, Apa247. I joined them with issue 1 and am there still to this day, lots of long-time friends now all 25-years-older like myself but still refusing to go on-line like everyone. We prefer to meet-up in person not virtually, and at times professional writers and artists for Comics have been members which makes for interesting gossip about people in the industry. Hah! I bought lots of vinyl and cd’s, went to the pictures to see Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, noting it was a re-run of Raiders but Sean Connery being in it saved it, giving it comedic and characterisation input, well-acted, well-directed enjoyable film. Connery and Harrison, I opined, are both Stars. 2 of my mates were considering the possibility of an American holiday adventure tour (North-East) so that was being discussed, through me, as they didn’t know each other. My garden pond was getting established, put fish in it. Chris Evert’s final Wimbledon game (lost to Steffi Graf) while the weather was hot, humid and thundery in Dorset - just like today! Finally, my Pet Shop Boys tickets arrived in the post, hooray! 1 ( 11 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 2 ( 2 ) IT'S ALRIGHT Pet Shop Boys 3 ( 16 ) 101" Sheena Easton 4 ( 1 ) LIBERIAN GIRL Michael Jackson 5 ( 5 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 6 ( 6 ) BATDANCE Prince 7 ( 4 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 8 ( 10 ) ONE The Bee Gees 9 ( 34 ) DOWNTOWN One 2 Many 10 ( 3 ) SPIRIT OF THE FOREST Spirit Of The Forest 11 ( 7 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 12 ( 8 ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 13 ( 13 ) IN A LIFETIME Clannad and Bono 14 ( 9 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 15 ( 12 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 16 ( 33 ) CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION Baby Ford 17 ( 23 ) GATECRASHING Living In A Box 18 ( 19 ) JOY AND PAIN Donna Allen 19 ( 26 ) AIN'T NOBODY '89 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan 20 ( 29 ) SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE Danny Wilson 21 ( 15 ) WALTZ DARLING Malcolm McLaren 22 ( 14 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 23 ( 18 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 24 ( 28 ) ATOMIC CITY Holly Johnson 25 ( 17 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 26 ( NEW ) SUMMERTIME Ella Fitzgerald 27 ( NEW ) LONDON NIGHTS The London Boys 28 ( 21 ) WHY Carly Simon 29 ( 38 ) BREAKTHRU Queen 30 ( 22 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 31 ( 40 ) CRY Waterfront 32 ( 20 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 33 ( 30 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 34 ( 45 ) DAYS Kirsty Maccoll 35 ( 27 ) I DON'T WANNA GET HURT Donna Summer 36 ( 25 ) I DROVE ALL NIGHT Cyndi Lauper 37 ( 41 ) DEAD HEART Midnight Oil 38 ( 24 ) FUNKY COLD MEDINA Tone Loc 39 ( 32 ) JUST KEEP ROCKIN' Double Trouble and the Rebel MC 40 ( 31 ) CRUEL SUMMER '89 Bananarama 41 ( 39 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 42 ( 36 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 43 ( 53 ) A NEW FLAME Simply Red 44 ( 59 ) LOOKING FOR A LOVE Joyce Sims 45 ( 42 ) ORDINARY PEOPLE The Bee Gees 46 ( 46 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 47 ( 35 ) ORANGE JUICE REM 48 ( 37 ) BABY YOU'RE A STAR Suzi Quatro 49 ( NEW ) YOU'LL NEVER STOP ME FROM LOVING YOU Sonia 50 ( 44 ) CALLING OUT TO CAROL Stan Ridgeway 51 ( 50 ) THE LONG HOT SUMMER 89 The Style Council 52 ( NEW ) BLAZING SADDLES Yello 53 ( 48 ) ELISABETH'S EYES Nik Kershaw 54 ( 68 ) ALL I WANT IS YOU U2 55 ( 43 ) WALKIN' ON SUNSHINE Eddy Grant 56 ( 56 ) HEY JUDE The Beatles 57 ( 65 ) I'M THAT KIND OF GUY LL Cool J 58 ( 58 ) BRING ME EDELWEISS Edelweiss 59 ( 55 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 60 ( 60 ) LITTLE LIES Fleetwood Mac 61 ( 74 ) CHA CHA HEELS Eartha Kitt and Bronski Beat 62 ( 62 ) THE AIR THAT I BREATHE The Hollies 63 ( 63 ) AS LONG AS WE'RE TOGETHER Al Green 64 ( 66 ) SUGAR SUGAR The Archies 65 ( 61 ) STOP! 10th number one for Pet Shop Boys, out of 12 singles, plus a couple written/produced for Dusty and Liza. That’s pretty consistent for under 4 years. It's Alright isn't one of their own songs, but the video and message remain relevant to 2014. I can think of many politicians who should be forced to sit and watch it. Meanwhile, The London Boys club it up to 7, while Ain’t Nobody goes top 10 for the second time in 5 years. Yello are Blazin’ up to 16, pity it wasn’t a hit, while late legend Roy Orbison gets another Top 20 hit off his terrific posthumous album, California Blue. De La Soul are new at 26, continuing the run of good singles with Say No Go (sampling Hall & Oates and others), and Aswad cover a 70’s MOR goodie and do it reggae well. Norman Cook pops in with a future Beats International hit, Won’t Talk About It but shhh that’s him under another name. Paul “Beatle” Somebody is in at 57 with one of his most-melodic singles in 5 or 6 years, the Beatlestastic This One, while soul great Roberta Flack is back again 17 years on from the first time ever I saw her face. Uh uh? Ooh Ooh! Comedy great Bette Midler lets the wind beneath her wings escape into the charts, and it’s not even slightly amusing! Rip-off! Apparently she’s had a cheque for over 100 dollars off a streaming site for over 5 million plays of her songs. Can’t say they aren’t generous. No, you really can’t. Karyn White takes a Superwoman into my charts, but I’ll take Supergirl (Graham Bonney), Superman (Laurie Anderson) or Superboy (yet to be written) over this one. Or the Blow Monkeys good Choice 2 places lower. Me, I bought Now 11 - gosh up to 11th in the series! I wonder if it’ll go on to ooh maybe as high as 20 or even 30!! The new boy at work was a bit difficult for our team to adjust to, as we’d been a great team of 4 up to then, but bloody ambitious chatty youngsters, come in and think they’re bloody experts right away, eh!? Err, actually he runs that department now, so doff of the cap to him. Mel Blanc, he of Bugs Bunny and man of a thousand voices, passed away, which meant a lot more to me than Laurence Olivier dying. On TV Star Trek: The Next Generation was getting into it’s stride at long last, and I was re-enjoying 60’s Mel Brooks TV series Get Smart. After being an 8 and a half-stone weakling most of my life, and tiring of sand being kicked in my face (hypothetical sand, mostly) I’d taken up doing weights to build up my bod a bit to show off at the beach. Amazingly I succeeded. I became a 9 and a half-stone weakling. Hah! What do I care now though, I’m still only 10-stone-ish! Not bad for 95-year-old. Sheena Easton gets her one and only chart-topper, the very-obviously Prince-dominated dance track 101, and it’s fabulous, the song builds and builds and then climaxes mightily. Criminally never a big hit. It, frankly, pisses all over 9 To 5 (My Baby Takes The Yawning Train). Almost there are Soul II Soul’s classic Back To Life at 3, and lots of huge jumps, topped by Gloria Estefan, and another classy ballad up from 52 to 5. Macca’s fab This One almost leaps 50 places to 8, his second Top 10 of the year, while Blow Monkeys choose number 13, up from 75. Funkay! De La Soul, Kirsty and Bobby Brown go top 20, and Swing Out Sister’s increasingly 60’s-cocktailjazz-pop sound slides into the 30. Few new entries, highest being The Darling Buds at 50, joined by Roxette, Bros and nothing much else of note. All fine, but none great. So, 2 members of our team of 4 had job interviews, which depressed Cathy and me, potentially left behind. I went to see Cathy last week, as it happens, happily, so we got over it! I was getting stressed at not having any “me-time” at home, so I got a day’s break from the kids, and took them to Arne nature reserve with mum on Saturday to make up for it, as the long hot summer continued. On TV, LA Law, Hooperman, Top Of The Pops, , and my beloved Legion Of Super Heroes comic was being given a grim n gritty “5 year gap” and creative team change. Effectively this was the end of the classic days. Booo! Someone mentioned their impression of me was self-confident and balanced, which shows how good I must have been at covering up my shyness, insecurity and emotional crises! Played tennis, and yay, Pet Shop Boys at Wembley Arena with mate Bob on Thursday 20th, a scorching hot day, shopping in record megastores (ah memories!) , marvelled at interesting Londoners passing by Pizzaland, had lots of laughs, and then off to Wembley. PET SHOP BOYS LIVE AT WEMBLEY ARENA Seated near the side back of the venue, my review: “Overall an enjoyable, OTT, camp, fast-paced run through of (most) highlights of their career, certain criticisms of of the show (too much happening with dancers, mega-screen Jarman films, and loads of costume changes)....plus the heat, the poor sound quality, Neil Tennant’s awful singing voice and too-fast tempo, plus being dog-tired, didn’t stop it being a really good concert; had we been nearer the stage, p’raps THE best (!).” Not to worry, they just got better and better with age as a live draw, Neil learnt to sing, and they remain my all-time fave live act, and one of my three all-time greats. Best songs: One More Chance, Opportunities, Left To My Own Devices, Heart, Rent, Love Comes Quickly. A Highlight was Chris Lowe’s Paninaro, plus casual dance! Brilliant. It’s A Sin really good, Sound Of The Atom Splitting not. Later Tonight, Nothing Has Been Proved, Shopping, King’s Cross, Domino Dancing, Always On My Mind and then to the encore’s West End Girls, It’s Alright. I must have been getting into it, as I moved my legs and hands to the beats. Not dancing, of course, I have to be drunk for that in public. A late drive back to Dorset 1.20 meant I was (apparently) semi-comatose all day at work friday. Hopefully not literally. 1 ( 3 ) 101" Sheena Easton 2 ( 1 ) IT'S ALRIGHT Pet Shop Boys 3 ( 4 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 4 ( 2 ) LIBERIAN GIRL Michael Jackson 5 ( 52 ) I DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine 6 ( 7 ) LONDON NIGHTS The London Boys 7 ( 6 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 8 ( 57 ) THIS ONE Paul McCartney 9 ( 5 ) BATDANCE Prince 10 ( 10 ) SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE Danny Wilson 11 ( 9 ) AIN'T NOBODY '89 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan 12 ( 11 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 13 ( 75 ) CHOICE The Blow Monkeys featuring Sylvia Teller 14 ( 8 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 15 ( 17 ) CALIFORNIA BLUE Roy Orbison 16 ( 16 ) BLAZING SADDLES Yello 17 ( 26 ) SAY NO GO De La Soul 18 ( 24 ) DAYS Kirsty Maccoll 19 ( 12 ) ONE The Bee Gees 20 ( 32 ) ON OUR OWN Bobby Brown 21 ( 13 ) IN A LIFETIME Clannad and Bono 22 ( 15 ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 23 ( 37 ) A NEW FLAME Simply Red 24 ( 19 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 25 ( 59 ) WHERE IN THE WORLD Swing Out Sister 26 ( 14 ) GATECRASHING Living In A Box 27 ( 40 ) ON AND ON Aswad 28 ( 28 ) CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION Baby Ford 29 ( 29 ) YOU'LL NEVER STOP ME FROM LOVING YOU Sonia 30 ( 22 ) BREAKTHRU Queen 31 ( 20 ) SUMMERTIME Ella Fitzgerald 32 ( 55 ) WON'T TALK ABOUT IT/ BASSLINE Norman Cook 33 ( 33 ) CRY Waterfront 34 ( 21 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 35 ( 31 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 36 ( 25 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 37 ( 27 ) JOY AND PAIN Donna Allen 38 ( 71 ) WIND BENEATH MY WINGS Bette Midler 39 ( 48 ) GRANDPA'S PARTY Monie Love 40 ( 18 ) DOWNTOWN One 2 Many 41 ( 39 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 42 ( 36 ) WHY Carly Simon 43 ( 30 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 44 ( 23 ) SPIRIT OF THE FOREST Spirit Of The Forest 45 ( 38 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 46 ( 35 ) WALTZ DARLING Malcolm McLaren 47 ( 41 ) I DROVE ALL NIGHT Cyndi Lauper 48 ( 34 ) ATOMIC CITY Holly Johnson 49 ( 49 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 50 ( NEW ) YOU'VE GOT TO CHOOSE The Darling Buds 51 ( 51 ) ORDINARY LIVES The Bee Gees 52 ( 46 ) FUNKY COLD MEDINA Tone Loc 53 ( 42 ) DEAD HEART Midnight Oil 54 ( 45 ) CRUEL SUMMER '89 Bananarama 55 ( 47 ) JUST KEEP ROCKIN' Double Trouble and the Rebel MC 56 ( 56 ) HEY JUDE The Beatles 57 ( 43 ) I DON'T WANNA GET HURT Donna Summer 58 ( 60 ) LITTLE LIES Fleetwood Mac 59 ( NEW ) VOODOO RAY A Guy Called Gerald 60 ( 53 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 61 ( 61 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 62 ( NEW ) TOO MUCH Bros 63 ( 54 ) CAN I GET A WITNESS Sam Brown 64 ( 64 ) SUGAR SUGAR The Archies 65 ( 65 ) UH UH OOH OOH LOOK OUT (HERE IT COMES) Roberta Flack 66 ( 63 ) THE AIR THAT I BREATHE The Hollies 67 ( NEW ) DRESSED FOR SUCCESS Roxette 68 ( NEW ) I NEED YOUR LOVE June Montana 69 ( 44 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 70 ( 50 ) ALL I WANT IS YOU U2 71 ( 68 ) STOP! 22nd July 1989 Gloria Estefan (and Miami Sound Machine aka husband Emilio) has her first chart-topper after several near-misses, and it’s a nice old-fashioned mildly-latin-flavoured ballad. I was always partial to the very affable Gloria. Meanwhile, Chaka goes higher with Ain’t Nobody 2nd-time around, and Yello get a 2nd Top 10, Blow Monkeys a 4th. Simply Red virtually tango into the 20 with A New Flame, and Aswad reggae it in too, while Norman Cook gets an early Top 20 hit of a later bigger version. Highest new entry is for the clips of old songs contained it, rather than the combination of them for the enormously popular Jive Bunny “single”. Ah well, at least it introduced 50’s oldies to kids, so shouldn’t grumble. Much more impressive, though is Shakespear’s Sister at 26. Didn’t even know he had one, much less one who was in Bananarama, but You’re History is a quirky delight. At 43 it’s a debut for The Lightning Seeds, consistently under-rated, and beautifully perfect and melodic pop singles, like Pure, which was. 47, it’s Martika, Toy Soldiers step by stepping into my charts, and rather good too. Other stuff: Bros get a rare Top 40 hit, Kylie enters at 39, The Cult say Ciao Baby, Inner City shuffle back, Stevie Nicks gets another solo hit, Fine Young cannibals keep hits a coming, Cyndi has her 5-year-run continuing, and Roachford sneaks in at 75. More of note, is Dion at 61, his first street-cred single in 20 years, and his first hit bar a 1976 reissue of The Wanderer, one of his many early-60’s goodies. In life, tennis with mate Bob, holiday estimates going on, me getting stroppy with my lovely niece and nephew, especially considering the unemployed young pyscho neighbour opposite had a garden with a helpful rusty nail for Vicki to fall on while playing with his kids, so that meant a trip to the hospital out-patients. “Psycho” is a fair (if slightly-overstated) description of the twat as will become more obvious in an anecdote or two yet to come. I went out for a coastal walk on the hottest day since 1976, took off my shirt it was so hot (well, until I saw other people, that is, then popped it back on) a great rarity for me in those days. I also got all optimistic about George Bush Senior’s announcement for funds for NASA for a proposed moonbase and manned trip to Mars project to celebrate 20 years since Apollo 11. Ah well, come back in another 50 years, most likely, not going to happen any time soon. 1 ( 5 ) I DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine 2 ( 1 ) 101" Sheena Easton 3 ( 2 ) IT'S ALRIGHT Pet Shop Boys 4 ( 4 ) LIBERIAN GIRL Michael Jackson 5 ( 11 ) AIN'T NOBODY '89 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan 6 ( 8 ) THIS ONE Paul McCartney 7 ( 3 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 8 ( 6 ) LONDON NIGHTS The London Boys 9 ( 16 ) BLAZING SADDLES Yello 10 ( 13 ) CHOICE The Blow Monkeys featuring Sylvia Teller 11 ( 10 ) SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE Danny Wilson 12 ( 20 ) ON OUR OWN Bobby Brown 13 ( 7 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 14 ( 9 ) BATDANCE Prince 15 ( 12 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 16 ( 17 ) SAY NO GO De La Soul 17 ( 18 ) DAYS Kirsty Maccoll 18 ( 23 ) A NEW FLAME Simply Red 19 ( 27 ) ON AND ON Aswad 20 ( 32 ) WON'T TALK ABOUT IT/ BASSLINE Norman Cook 21 ( 14 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 22 ( 29 ) YOU'LL NEVER STOP ME FROM LOVING YOU Sonia 23 ( 15 ) CALIFORNIA BLUE Roy Orbison 24 ( NEW ) SWING THE MOOD Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers 25 ( 25 ) WHERE IN THE WORLD Swing Out Sister 26 ( NEW ) YOU'RE HISTORY Shakespear's Sister 27 ( 22 ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 28 ( 19 ) ONE The Bee Gees 29 ( 24 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 30 ( 39 ) GRANDPA'S PARTY Monie Love 31 ( 62 ) TOO MUCH Bros 32 ( 38 ) WIND BENEATH MY WINGS Bette Midler 33 ( 33 ) CRY Waterfront 34 ( 21 ) IN A LIFETIME Clannad and Bono 35 ( 35 ) MANCHILD Neneh Cherry 36 ( 50 ) YOU'VE GOT TO CHOOSE The Darling Buds 37 ( 28 ) CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION Baby Ford 38 ( 36 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan 39 ( NEW ) I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING Kylie Minogue 40 ( 34 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 41 ( 41 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 42 ( 31 ) SUMMERTIME Ella Fitzgerald 43 ( NEW ) PURE The LIghtning Seeds 44 ( 26 ) GATECRASHING Living In A Box 45 ( 69 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 46 ( NEW ) EDIE (CIAO BABY) The Cult 47 ( NEW ) TOY SOLDIERS Martika 48 ( 37 ) JOY AND PAIN Donna Allen 49 ( 49 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 50 ( 45 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 51 ( 30 ) BREAKTHRU Queen 52 ( 42 ) WHY Carly Simon 53 ( NEW ) DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU FEEL Inner City 54 ( 51 ) ORDINARY LIVES The Bee Gees 55 ( 43 ) PINK SUNSHINE Fuzzbox 56 ( 68 ) I NEED YOUR LOVE June Montana 57 ( 56 ) HEY JUDE The Beatles 58 ( 59 ) VOODOO RAY A Guy Called Gerald 59 ( 58 ) LITTLE LIES Fleetwood Mac 60 ( 67 ) DRESSED FOR SUCCESS Roxette 61 ( NEW ) KING OF THE NEW YORK STREETS Dion 62 ( 61 ) NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED Dusty Springfield 63 ( NEW ) LONG WAY TO GO Stevie Nicks 64 ( 40 ) DOWNTOWN One 2 Many 65 ( 64 ) SUGAR SUGAR The Archies 66 ( 46 ) WALTZ DARLING Malcolm McLaren 67 ( 66 ) THE AIR THAT I BREATHE The Hollies 68 ( 75 ) GET LOOSE LA Mix featuring Jazzy P 69 ( NEW ) DON'T LOOK BACK Fine Young Cannibals 70 ( 60 ) MY BRAVE FACE Paul McCartney 71 ( NEW ) MY FIRST NIGHT WITHOUT YOU Cyndi Lauper 72 ( 73 ) WHAT HAVE I DONE (TO DESERVE THIS) Pet Shop Boys/ Dusty Springfield 73 ( 71 ) STOP! A deluge of new entries, 6 of them female fronted bands, as Gloria gets a second week on top, and keeps Paul McCartney from his 2nd Number One in a row. Shakespear’s Sister rocket to 5, beating most of Bananarama’s hits in a swoop, while Simply Red get a rare Top 10 as Bobby Brown follows up his chart-topper with another Top 10 hit. The Lightning Seeds are Purely up to 12, and highest new entry is Tom Petty with his (as always) minor-UK-hit Running Down The Dream, just edging out glamrock legend Alice Cooper’s big comeback single, Poison. Very 80’s metal ballad, but then he influenced a whole generation of crappy 80‘s imitations, so it’s only fair he get the kudos, and his first Top 20 hit since 1974, and his biggest song since Julie Covington covered Only Women Bleed and took it to the top in 1977. The Primitives, Wendy & Lisa, Texas, Cowboy Junkies, Transvision Vamp and Fuzzbox are the female-fronted bands who enter, while Jonathan King (aka Nemo) gets a reissued hit of his Top 20 1971 1930’s pastiche, a la Noel Coward. I doubt you’ll ever hear it on the radio again, some of the lyrics are not-pc, though it was mildly amusing as a piss-take. Lisa Stansfield has a solo hit, and for the first time ever, so does Liza Minelli, daughter of Judy Garland and showbiz Cabaret legend with an electropop version of a Stephen Sondheim showtune, courtesy of Neil and Chris, who did a great album with her, and appeared on Wogan with her (Pet Shop Boys, natch, and joining Dusty in reinvigorating diva legends using their own style and songs). Amusing to me, Milli Vanilli follow Minelli. All that’s missing is Millie and Molly! At home, my sis-in-law had a street-shouting match with the psycho neighbour over swearing at the kids, he ended up kicking our front door. The children joined in all the shouting. As if that wasn’t enough, some council estate kids who decided to splash me from a paddling pool while I was working on measuring up for plans. How very dare they! On TV, 50’s repeats of The Honeymooners and Jack Benny really did turn back the clock. Not a chance in hell of ever seeing them on TV again, though, not even one of a zillion digital TV channels broadcasts classic TV shows in the UK. Certainly not black and white ones, at any rate. 3 weeks for Gloria, a tad OTT I think, Macca should have been at 1 instead. Apart from Macca, though it’s divas and gals hogging the top 5 as Liza with a Z loses her mind up 45 places to 5, courtesy of Chris n Neil - it’s essentially a PSB cover with Liza singing on top. Fab. Alice Cooper snakes his way into the 10 for the first time in 16 years, and it’s Poison. Pure poison. Pure. Lightning Seeds at 8, breaking into the 10 for the first time, and most definitely not the last time. Martika breaks into the 20, Bros get only a second Top 20 hit, and Cyndi Lauper gets a full 5 years of top 20 hits. Stevie Nicks has a long way to go up to 22, but does it easily, while Transvision Vamp keep the top 40 hits on a landslide. There’s a batch of great new entries though to liven up the charts, headed by Eurythmics getting a 10th anniversary (as The Tourists) Revival at 35 (not the song though, that’s new). Elton John proves he has Healing Hands as the best record he’s done in 6 years shoots in at 36, to UK singles chart indifference. For a year at least, till the gospel marvel of it got a bit more exposure as a double A side number one with Sacrifice. Neneh Cherry has Kisses On The Wind at 39, The Four Tops shine on at 45 (not the famous song, it’s a new one) for 20 years of chart entries, and Jon Bon Jovi begs us to lay our hands on him. I had the opportunity nearly a decade later but managed to restrain myself. Dolly Parton has just released a great version of the song, appropriately enough. Betty Boo raps Hey DJ to the Beatmasters, and starts a brief run of good pop singles, and makes Betty Boop famous again as copyright makes her change her name, ooh any day now. Big debut news though is the KLF, not yet in epic mode, but very much in piss-take mode following The Timelords chart-topper, with the fabulous Kylie Said To Jason. You know you’ve created a great parody record when it’s better than the targets (Kylie and Jason’s current singles) on two levels, as parody, or as borrowing the sound of SAW to make the point yet still make a great pop record. Queen, meanwhile, are a bit invisible at 58 compared to the big comeback singalong thumping rock ballad charm of Cher’s If I Could Turn Back Time, for a sweet 18 years of solo hits. Mustn’t forget Malcolm McLaren’s quirky Shirt Jumping either at 70. Phew! Busy chart. In the real world: Fun Coastal walk with Cathy and Chris from work to Dancing Ledge. Pre-holiday prep anxieties, but all booked. Ageist quips flying at work, with lovely Cathy, a whole decade older than me, on the receiving end. I was on the receiving end of an eraser, quite rightly. Young Andy, a decade younger than me, got a reverse ageist taunt when I suggested puberty was recent traumatic event. Banter! Mansfield friends of parents holiday camping in the garden at home, though Pat my age really, and a College friend rang with news of breast cancer treatment which made me feel bad at not getting in touch, as I had no idea. She’s fine now, very very happily. 1 ( 1 ) I DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine 2 ( 2 ) THIS ONE Paul McCartney 3 ( 5 ) YOU'RE HISTORY Shakespear's Sister 4 ( 3 ) 101" Sheena Easton 5 ( 50 ) LOSING MY MIND Liza Minelli 6 ( 20 ) POISON Alice Cooper 7 ( 8 ) BLAZING SADDLES Yello 8 ( 12 ) PURE The Lightning Seeds 9 ( 4 ) LIBERIAN GIRL Michael Jackson 10 ( 6 ) IT'S ALRIGHT Pet Shop Boys 11 ( 15 ) ON AND ON Aswad 12 ( 7 ) CHOICE The Blow Monkeys featuring Sylvia Teller 13 ( 10 ) ON OUR OWN Bobby Brown 14 ( 25 ) TOY SOLDIERS Martika 15 ( 26 ) TOO MUCH Bros 16 ( 17 ) RUNNING DOWN THE DREAM Tom Petty 17 ( 11 ) LONDON NIGHTS The London Boys 18 ( 13 ) AIN'T NOBODY '89 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan 19 ( 35 ) MY FIRST NIGHT WITHOUT YOU Cyndi Lauper 20 ( 14 ) YOU'LL NEVER STOP ME FROM LOVING YOU Sonia 21 ( 9 ) A NEW FLAME Simply Red 22 ( 63 ) LONG WAY TO GO Stevie Nicks 23 ( 31 ) I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING Kylie Minogue 24 ( 24 ) SWING THE MOOD Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers 25 ( 18 ) BATDANCE Prince 26 ( 39 ) DON'T LOOK BACK Fine Young Cannibals 27 ( 16 ) SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE Danny Wilson 28 ( 28 ) BLUE MOON REVISITED Cowboy Junkies 29 ( 19 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 30 ( 37 ) THIS IS THE RIGHT TIME Lisa Stansfield 31 ( 22 ) SICK OF IT The Primitives 32 ( 60 ) LANDSLIDE OF LOVE Transvision Vamp 33 ( 23 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 34 ( 40 ) SATISFACTION Wendy and Lisa 35 ( NEW ) REVIVAL Eurythmics 36 ( NEW ) HEALING HANDS Elton John 37 ( 21 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 38 ( 48 ) KING OF THE NEW YORK STREETS Dion 39 ( NEW ) KISSES ON THE WIND Neneh Cherry 40 ( NEW ) DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU FEEL Inner City 41 ( 36 ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 42 ( 43 ) BETTER DAYS Gun 43 ( 41 ) CALIFORNIA BLUE Roy Orbison 44 ( 32 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 45 ( NEW ) THE SUN AIN'T GONNA SHINE The Four Tops 46 ( 38 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 47 ( NEW ) LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME Bon Jovi 48 ( 34 ) THE SUN HAS GOT HIS HAT ON Nemo 49 ( 29 ) WON'T TALK ABOUT IT/ BASSLINE Norman Cook 50 ( NEW ) HEY DJ Beatmasters featuring Betty Boop 51 ( 42 ) ONE The Bee Gees 52 ( 55 ) BLAME IT ON THE RAIN Milli Vanilli 53 ( 27 ) SAY NO GO De La Soul 54 ( 47 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 55 ( 30 ) WIND BENEATH MY WINGS Bette Midler 56 ( NEW ) KYLIE SAID TO JASON The KLF 57 ( 54 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 58 ( NEW ) INVISIBLE MAN Queen 59 ( 61 ) LITTLE LIES Fleetwood Mac 60 ( 51 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 61 ( 59 ) HEY JUDE The Beatles 62 ( 33 ) DAYS Kirsty Maccoll 63 ( 75 ) KICK IT IN Simple Minds 64 ( 58 ) ORDINARY LIVES The Bee Gees 65 ( 65 ) SELF Fuzzbox 66 ( 66 ) SUGAR SUGAR The Archies 67 ( 62 ) ROOMS ON FIRE Stevie Nicks 68 ( NEW ) IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME Cher 69 ( 68 ) THE AIR THAT I BREATHE The Hollies 70 ( NEW ) SOMETHING'S JUMPING IN YOUR SHIRT Malcolm McLaren 71 ( 71 ) IT ISN'T IT WASN'T IT AIN'T NEVER GONNA BE Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston 72 ( 74 ) EVERYDAY NOW Texas 73 ( 72 ) WHAT HAVE I DONE (TO DESERVE THIS) Pet Shop Boys/ Dusty Springfield 74 ( 64 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 75 ( 52 ) SEALED WITH A KISS Jason Donovan This post has been edited by popchartfreak: 30th August 2014, 04:04 PM |

An amazingly overlong run at 1 for Gloria keeps Liza at 2. Awwww! Losing My Mind over that one. A quiet week at the top lets Martika, Bobby Brown and Aswad get their 1st, 2nd and third Top 10’s respectively. Elton leaps to 14, something’s Jumpin’ even more - from 70 to 16 it’s Malcolm McLaren’s model-cool dance track. Transvision Vamp and Neneh Cherry both get their 3rd Top 20 hit, meanwhile, as some Classics enter just below, highest at 26 being Black Box, the Italian house classic (with model-fronting Loleatta Holloway Love Sensation-sampling brilliant Ride On Time). Still a classic. Even better, the Beatles-inspired epic Sowing The Seeds Of Love announces Tears For Fears 7th year of fantastic hits. Pure 1967 retro video and All You Need Is Love styled chorus, and juuuuust amazing. Just to keep up the new singles, Sydney Youngblood debuts at 34 with the fab If Only I Could, a great song, snuggling in just behind Cher and Bon Jovi into the 40. Oh but that’s not all! Madonna’s 3rd single off Like A Prayer is at 39, the sweet and pretty Cherish. Sir Cliff is also back with a Stock-Aitken-Waterman biggie, the otherwise not bad I Just Don’t Have The Heart. Minor entries for Spandau, Paula Abdul, Art Of Noise, REM, Jody watley, Debbie Gibson and another fairly bland SAW cover (Mick Jackson’s Blame It On The Boogie) for Big Fun. 1 ( 1 ) I DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine 2 ( 5 ) LOSING MY MIND Liza Minelli 3 ( 3 ) YOU'RE HISTORY Shakespear's Sister 4 ( 2 ) THIS ONE Paul McCartney 5 ( 8 ) PURE The LIghtning Seeds 6 ( 14 ) TOY SOLDIERS Martika 7 ( 13 ) ON OUR OWN Bobby Brown 8 ( 11 ) ON AND ON Aswad 9 ( 6 ) POISON Alice Cooper 10 ( 4 ) 101" Sheena Easton 11 ( 15 ) TOO MUCH Bros 12 ( 9 ) LIBERIAN GIRL Michael Jackson 13 ( 16 ) RUNNING DOWN THE DREAM Tom Petty 14 ( 36 ) HEALING HANDS Elton John 15 ( 19 ) MY FIRST NIGHT WITHOUT YOU Cyndi Lauper 16 ( 70 ) SOMETHING'S JUMPIN' IN YOUR SHIRT Malcolm McLaren featuring The Bootzilla Orchestra and Lisa Marie 17 ( 7 ) BLAZING SADDLES Yello 18 ( 10 ) IT'S ALRIGHT Pet Shop Boys 19 ( 32 ) LANDSLIDE OF LOVE Transvision Vamp 20 ( 39 ) KISSES ON THE WIND Neneh Cherry 21 ( 12 ) CHOICE The Blow Monkeys featuring Sylvia Teller 22 ( 22 ) LONG WAY TO GO Stevie Nicks 23 ( 30 ) THIS IS THE RIGHT TIME Lisa Stansfield 24 ( 17 ) LONDON NIGHTS The London Boys 25 ( 18 ) AIN'T NOBODY '89 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan 26 ( NEW ) RIDE ON TIME Black Box 27 ( NEW ) SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE Tears For Fears 28 ( 50 ) HEY DJ Beatmasters featuring Betty Boop 29 ( 47 ) LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME Bon Jovi 30 ( 38 ) KING OF THE NEW YORK STREETS Dion 31 ( 20 ) YOU'LL NEVER STOP ME FROM LOVING YOU Sonia 32 ( 68 ) IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME Cher 33 ( 25 ) BATDANCE Prince 34 ( NEW ) IF ONLY I COULD Sydney Youngblood 35 ( 35 ) REVIVAL Eurythmics 36 ( 21 ) A NEW FLAME Simply Red 37 ( 26 ) DON'T LOOK BACK Fine Young Cannibals 38 ( 33 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 39 ( NEW ) CHERISH Madonna 40 ( 58 ) INVISIBLE MAN Queen 41 ( 29 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 42 ( 41 ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 43 ( 34 ) SATISFACTION Wendy and Lisa 44 ( 23 ) I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING Kylie Minogue 45 ( 45 ) THE SUN AIN'T GONNA SHINE The Four Tops 46 ( 37 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 47 ( 27 ) SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE Danny Wilson 48 ( 24 ) SWING THE MOOD Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers 49 ( 40 ) DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU FEEL Inner City 50 ( NEW ) I JUST DON'T HAVE THE HEART Cliff Richard 51 ( 51 ) ONE The Bee Gees 52 ( 28 ) BLUE MOON REVISITED Cowboy Junkies 53 ( NEW ) DO THE RIGHT THING Redhead Kingpin And The FBI 54 ( 46 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 55 ( NEW ) BE FREE WITH YOUR LOVE Spandau Ballet 56 ( 44 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 57 ( 43 ) CALIFORNIA BLUE Roy Orbison 58 ( 57 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 59 ( 59 ) LITTLE LIES Fleetwood Mac 60 ( 65 ) SELF Fuzzbox 61 ( 61 ) HEY JUDE The Beatles 62 ( 56 ) KYLIE SAID TO JASON The KLF 63 ( 54 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 64 ( 31 ) SICK OF IT The Primitives 65 ( 60 ) SWEET CHILD O' MINE Guns 'n' Roses 66 ( 66 ) SUGAR SUGAR The Archies 67 ( NEW ) KNOCKED OUT Paula Abdul 68 ( 74 ) I WILL DO FOR YOU UB40 69 ( 69 ) THE AIR THAT I BREATHE The Hollies 70 ( NEW ) YEBO! 20th August 1989
A new number one, and it’s Elton’s fabulous Healing Hands. I have to admit I was completely baffled how this one managed to flop big time in the UK in 1989. His 7th number one in my chart, about as many in the USA, and yet to get a UK chart-topper on his own. Bizarre. Poor ol’ Liza was the bridesmaid again at 2. Highest new entry at 4, a 1966 classic from hippie Donovan, Sunshine Superman, probably his best record and pop psychedelia royalty giving him a belated second Top 20 hit 20 years on. Tears For Fears sow seeds at 5, Black Box ride it to 8, and it’s a Mental new entry at 12 for some Manic MC’s. Crazy. Bon Jovi have their biggest hit in 3 years, and Rocky Horror classic The Time Warp transports in at 19 for Damian. Party classic or what?! Really drives me insa-a-a-a-ane, as Jameela might say. Meanwhile Debbie Gibson inexplicably rockets to 23, as the KLF explicably shoot up to 24. New: Donna Summer’s 3rd SAW hit of the year, Richard Marx debuts with the pleasant Right Here Waiting, The Cure bounce back with Love Song 9 years into the run of great singles, and Janet Jackson’s big comeback single isn’t Missed that much at a lowly 69. I noted the UK singles charts had some good stuff in, but little classic, in my whinge-book, while my boss was trying to find me a permanent job at work, but it meant having to do horticulture courses. Radio One Roadshow with Simon Mayo at the Bournemouth Pier at lunchtime. Saw the Batman movie, very dark, too much for my tastes really, as it made me depressed. Built a new fish pond, parents not impressed. 1 ( 14 ) HEALING HANDS Elton John 2 ( 2 ) LOSING MY MIND Liza Minelli 3 ( 1 ) I DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine 4 ( NEW ) SUNSHINE SUPERMAN Donovan 5 ( 27 ) SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE Tears For Fears 6 ( 3 ) YOU'RE HISTORY Shakespear's Sister 7 ( 16 ) SOMETHING'S JUMPIN' IN YOUR SHIRT Malcolm McLaren featuring The Bootzilla Orchestra and Lisa Marie 8 ( 26 ) RIDE ON TIME Black Box 9 ( 5 ) PURE The LIghtning Seeds 10 ( 4 ) THIS ONE Paul McCartney 11 ( 6 ) TOY SOLDIERS Martika 12 ( NEW ) MENTAL Manic MC's 13 ( 20 ) KISSES ON THE WIND Neneh Cherry 14 ( 29 ) LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME Bon Jovi 15 ( 11 ) TOO MUCH Bros 16 ( 8 ) ON AND ON Aswad 17 ( 10 ) 101" Sheena Easton 18 ( 7 ) ON OUR OWN Bobby Brown 19 ( NEW ) THE TIME WARP Damian 20 ( 12 ) LIBERIAN GIRL Michael Jackson 21 ( 39 ) CHERISH Madonna 22 ( 9 ) POISON Alice Cooper 23 ( 75 ) WE COULD BE TOGETHER Debbie Gibson 24 ( 62 ) KYLIE SAID TO JASON The KLF 25 ( 35 ) REVIVAL Eurythmics 26 ( 34 ) IF ONLY I COULD Sydney Youngblood 27 ( 50 ) I JUST DON'T HAVE THE HEART Cliff Richard 28 ( 32 ) IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME Cher 29 ( 15 ) MY FIRST NIGHT WITHOUT YOU Cyndi Lauper 30 ( 18 ) IT'S ALRIGHT Pet Shop Boys 31 ( 28 ) HEY DJ Beatmasters featuring Betty Boop 32 ( 40 ) INVISIBLE MAN Queen 33 ( 37 ) DON'T LOOK BACK Fine Young Cannibals 34 ( 23 ) THIS IS THE RIGHT TIME Lisa Stansfield 35 ( 13 ) RUNNING DOWN THE DREAM Tom Petty 36 ( 53 ) DO THE RIGHT THING Redhead Kingpin And The FBI 37 ( 21 ) CHOICE The Blow Monkeys featuring Sylvia Teller 38 ( 22 ) LONG WAY TO GO Stevie Nicks 39 ( 24 ) LONDON NIGHTS The London Boys 40 ( 17 ) BLAZING SADDLES Yello 41 ( 19 ) LANDSLIDE OF LOVE Transvision Vamp 42 ( 55 ) BE FREE WITH YOUR LOVE Spandau Ballet 43 ( 60 ) SELF Fuzzbox 44 ( 42 ) THE BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO The Beatles 45 ( 33 ) BATDANCE Prince 46 ( 25 ) AIN'T NOBODY '89 Rufus featuring Chaka Khan 47 ( 30 ) KING OF THE NEW YORK STREETS Dion 48 ( 38 ) POP MUSIK '89 M 49 ( NEW ) LOVE'S ABOUT TO CHANGE MY HEART Donna Summer 50 ( 31 ) YOU'LL NEVER STOP ME FROM LOVING YOU Sonia 51 ( NEW ) A BIT OF U2 Kiss AMC 52 ( 67 ) KNOCKED OUT Paula Abdul 53 ( 36 ) A NEW FLAME Simply Red 54 ( 74 ) FRIENDS Jody Watley featuring Eric B 55 ( 51 ) ONE The Bee Gees 56 ( NEW ) RIGHT HERE WAITING Richard Marx 57 ( 44 ) I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING Kylie Minogue 58 ( 41 ) LICENCE TO KILL Gladys Knight 59 ( 59 ) LITTLE LIES Fleetwood Mac 60 ( NEW ) LOVE SONG The Cure 61 ( 61 ) HEY JUDE The Beatles 62 ( 56 ) BE WITH YOU The Bangles 63 ( 58 ) DAYDREAM BELIEVER/ A LITTLE BIT ME A LITTLE BIT YOU/ MONKEES THEME The Monkees 64 ( 46 ) BACK TO LIFE Soul II Soul featuring Caron Wheeler 65 ( 47 ) SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE Danny Wilson 66 ( 66 ) SUGAR SUGAR The Archies 67 ( NEW ) I NEED YOUR LOVIN' Alyson Williams 68 ( 72 ) BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE Big Fun 69 ( NEW ) MISS YOU MUCH Janet Jackson 70 ( 69 ) THE AIR THAT I BREATHE The Hollies 71 ( 54 ) EXPRESS YOURSELF Madonna 72 ( NEW ) TALK IT OVER Grayson Hugh 73 ( 73 ) WHAT HAVE I DONE (TO DESERVE THIS) Pet Shop Boys/ Dusty Springfield 74 ( 63 ) EVERY LITTLE STEP Bobby Brown 75 ( NEW ) THE BETTER PART OF ME Jaki Graham This post has been edited by popchartfreak: 3rd September 2014, 03:06 PM |
