I'm sorry about the cover in the opening post. The link from Wikipedia isn't letting me embed Selena.png

Hopefully when Joseph gets time, he'll be able to make it look neater sarah11.png

EDIT: Found a better one but it still looks like it's horrible quality drama.gif

2nd album time now. I ofc remember all the singles! 'The Show' is one of my favourite GA singles. Love the 80's electro synths. 'Love Machine' just gets worse and worse for me with each listen, oops. It's really irritating! 'I'll Stand By You' is SO cute though. A bit "by the numbers" when it comes to covers, but it's nice. 'Jump' was on the first album (a reissue?) lmaoooo but one of my favourite covers from them. 'Wake Me Up' is so catchy & fun! It's a tad dated now, but I feel like it's always been one of their most underrated singles.

My Ranking:
1. The Show
2. Wake Me Up
3. Jump
4. Big Brother
5. Graffiti My Soul
6. Here We Go
7. Real Life
8. Thank Me Daddy
9. I'll Stand By You
10. Deadlines & Diets
11. Love Machine
12. Hear Me Out
13. 100 Different Ways
14. I Say A Prayer For You

I like the vibe and feel of 'Big Brother' a lot. Would've made a good single I think. It reminds me of a more mid-tempo 'Wake Me Up'. 'Graffiti My Soul' is v interesting. Quirky and different. 'Here We Go', 'Real Life' & 'Thank Me Daddy' are all fun & decent. These have potential to grow if I become more accustomed to the album. 'Hear Me Out', I'm sorry, but I wasn't feeling that much at all </3 I didn't dislike it, I just wasn't bothered by it.

Not won over by the original ballads (basically the bonus tracks) on this album I'm afraid! They're just kinda... there. Meh. 'Love Machine' is definitely their most irritating song/single to me. They definitely found their sound more with this album. It's good! Definitely enjoyed it more than I remembered I did in the past, at least. Solid album! I like it.

Album Rankings:
01. What Will the Neighbours Say?
02. Sound of the Underground

WWTNS? has always been such a fun record and I have very sweet memories attached to it. Starting already with the artwork, which was fab, as was the artwork for the singles as well (CD2 of Love Machine- iconic). You could feel they were really starting to find their sound with this one, obviously helped by Xenomania and the fact this was their first album to work together on every song. Funnily enough, I'll Say A Prayer For You has always been a highlight for me- Nicola's vocals are just stunning <3 The singles were all brilliant; ISBY is maybe not one of their most popular ones but I have always loved it. Here We Go was also a fun one for me as well, given that an earlier version of the song was used in the Totally Spies intro.

Posted by: Jade Mar 31 2021, 08:33 AM

That WordArt front cover DeadBanana.gif really happy to see the 'Wake Me Up' love, Jonjo, as that's in my GA top 5 full stop - so underrated!

I bought the promo vinyl of this album on eBay last year for a double-figure amount and there's currently one on there for £500 tearsmile.gif

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Mar 31 2021, 08:13 PM

I was never a fan of the album cover but the album itself is fun and i think they showed great progression from the first album as the style was different this time around, none of the songs came close to been as good as no good advice or sound of the underground for me but i still enjoyed the album alot and still do.

What an era this was for them, such a shame Love Machine just missed out on #1 as that is such a career defining song for them. I always loved the artwork , very of it's time but very colourful and fun. The only thing I didn't like about it was that the girls were different sizes always wondered whether that would have caused any tensions within the group.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Apr 2 2021, 05:19 PM

Its s shame they dont have more number 1s, was live machine the closest they were to number 1 without actually getting there.

I had actually never realised this, until you pointed it out. It is very strange indeed, I mean, Nadine was seen as the voice of the group and Cheryl as the most well known one, so I guess that's why they are bigger but it's s still a strange one.

Also agree with both of you that it's a shame LM missed out the top spot. At the same time, it also shows getting a #1 position is not all that. LM is remembered a lot more than a lot of #1's around that time (especially thinking of those Mcfly songs that got to #1 and pretty much fell down the charts in a matter of weeks afterwards).

Call The Shots and Life Got Cold, despite *only* peaking at #3, were actually closer to the #1 spot than their #2 hits!

1- IGNITION (REMIX)- R Kelly (72,000)
2- NO GOOD ADVICE- Girls Aloud (42,000)

1- BREATHE- Blu Cantrell Ft Sean Paul (40,000)
2- DANCE (WITH U)- Lemar (33,000)
3- LIFE GOT COLD- Girls Aloud (32,000)

1- MANDY- Westlife (68,620)
2- JUMP- Girls Aloud (59,000)

1- BURN- Usher (49,334)
2- THE SHOW- Girls Aloud (28,572)

1- CALL ON ME- Eric Prydz (68,138)
2- LOVE MACHINE- Girls Aloud (35,800)

1- STAR GIRL- McFly (54,802)
2- PUT YOUR HANDS UP FOR DETROIT- Fedde Le Grand (46,896)
3- SOMETHING KINDA OOOOH- Girls Aloud (42,114)

1- BLEEDING LOVE- Leona Lewis (40,530)
2- HEARTBROKEN- T2 Ft Jodie Aysha (31,768)
3- CALL THE SHOTS- Girls Aloud (31,457)

1- TROUBLEMAKER- Olly Murs Ft Flo Rida (121,497)
2- SOMETHING NEW- Girls Aloud (70,850)

Annoyingly, Jump and Love Machine would have been #1 if they were released a week earlier! sad.gif

This album places last out of Girls Aloud's albums for me, but it's undoubtedly the moment they really discovered their sound. I think people tend to overlook just how edgy their music could be and I definitely get the sense that the girls and Xenomania had a close working relationship. The artwork is my favourite, although the gap between Nadine's arm and the shadow of the 'A' has always annoyed me!

The singles campaign leading up to the album release was spot on and the results speak for themselves: 392k sold in just 5 weeks, compared with 245k across 7 months for their debut album.

Ya jump was way better than mandy but i find it easier to lose out on number 1 by 9000 rather than the 200 odd they lost out on top 10 with the chemistry album.

I love the show too, it's so funky, quite underrated really deserved more success.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jul 6 2021, 11:50 AM

'The Show' has really stood the test of time remarkably well for me.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Jul 6 2021, 12:25 PM

I like the show but never really loved it, and its not one of their biggies for me.

Posted by: JosephStyles Sep 12 2021, 02:56 PM

Though I'd probably "only" rank this 4th out of 5 in terms of their albums, I've been going back to it more and more recently. I think the renewed love for Hear Me Out started that rediscovery off but there are so many good album tracks here - Big Brother, Graffiti My Soul and Here We Go are my other album track faves. Obviously the singles are all excellent and I think they picked them perfectly, there's nothing I'd swap in or out.

Jump's inclusion always felt random though! laugh.gif I guess not everyone will have picked up the SOTU re-issue but it sorta annoys me that it features on two albums kink.gif

Posted by: -Jay- Sep 13 2021, 12:48 PM

17 years ago today, Love Machine was released heart.gif It peaked at #2 in the UK where it remained for a fortnight. Last year it became Gold certified! It's their third best selling single.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 13 2021, 01:05 PM

Good that it finally went gold,, I do like love machine but prefer a few other girls Aloud singles to it.Its probably one of their better known singles to the casual listener.

Posted by: Chemistry Sep 13 2021, 05:48 PM

Love Machine is obviously a classic in their discography, but I could at least name ten singles I prefer. Having said that, it's still a very very good pop song of course and in a better sales climate, it would have surely been platinum already.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Sep 13 2021, 05:56 PM

I'm not as fond of 'Love Machine' these days, I think the fact it's been so overused in things like sofa adverts has tainted it for me.

I think WWTNS? is such a solid album really. Aside from 'Deadlines & Diets', '100 Different Ways' and 'I Say a Little Prayer For You' all, these songs are pretty much classics for me.

Posted by: schizo_spice Sep 14 2021, 09:37 AM

I love the production for Love Machine. It undoubtedly makes the song.

Posted by: Run_For_Cover Dec 9 2021, 03:19 AM

Listening to this album now for the first time and it's actually very good. I'm up to Hear Me Out.

Posted by: Run_For_Cover Dec 9 2021, 04:01 AM

This was more enjoyable than I was expecting. Again they nailed the singles.

The Show, Love Machine, I'll Stand By You, Wake Me Up, Deadlines & Diets, Graffiti My Soul and Hear Me Out the highlights.

What Will the Neighbours Say? was released 18 years ago - 29th November 2004! It peaked at #6 in the UK albums chart and sold over 600,000 copies. Happy 18th anniversary to this fabulous album *.*

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Nov 30 2022, 02:49 AM

Happy birthday what will the neighbours say, the album did well for them and sold much better than their debut but at the time I was disappointed with it missing the top 5 as I fully expected no lower than top 3.

Posted by: Jessie Where Nov 30 2022, 08:06 PM

What a fabulous album/era. You could really get the sense by late 2004 that they were taking things to the next level and becoming something to be noticed.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Dec 1 2022, 01:16 AM

The momentum was really growing at this point plus people saw them as Girls Aloud rather than the 5 girls put together on popstar the rivals.

Posted by: -Jay- Dec 5 2022, 05:05 PM

On this date 18 years ago, What Will the Neighbours Say? entered the UK albums chart with first week sales of 85,717!

Unfortunately sales info from that week is a bit thin on the ground (at least I can't find much) but Lemar was #8 with 78,266, so it looks like it was a bit of a tight race for Girls Aloud to end up at #6. I wonder what #5 sold?

Those sales in todays climate look amazing, i really miss the days when albums could sell numbers like this or higher and not get top 5, i think we had times in q4 where all album in the top 10 could clear 100k.

I have #5 (Kylie's 'Ultimate Kylie') estimated at 95k (was 33rd on the YTD chart after four weeks with total sales estimated at 425k; three of the four weekly sales had been revealed by official sources).

Today is 19 years since The Show!

formukdesign posted about it. It could just be to mark the anniversary, but... could they be starting work on a WWTNS reissue? thinking.gif https://www.instagram.com/stories/formukdesign/3134641833916535430/

Yes please What Will The Neighbours Say? reissue wub.gif I do have the promo vinyl but that only includes 6 tracks so would love the full set.

I definitely remember being intrigued by the quirkiness of 'The Show's lyrics at the time (e.g. "should've fluttered my mascara like a butterfly") but it didn't turn into a proper favourite until I was a bit older and appreciated synth-pop of its kind more - nowadays it would rank very high for me. Posted by: schizo_spice Dec 1 2023, 10:13 AM

In many ways this feels like their proper debut album.

Sound of the Underground was so messy as a complete record and didn’t really know what it wanted to be.

This feels like them and what they evolved into.

Looking forward to hearing that sliding doors career moment (and the other two unreleased songs! Yay for them opening the vault).

Very nice that they're including the TV/Performance edits of the singles. They didn't do that for No Good Advice, Life Got Cold or Jump on the Sound of the Underground re-release, so I wasn't anticipating it for What Will the Neighbours Say? - so that's pleasantly surprising.

Baby When You Go I am almost 99.9% certain will be the same song that Mania (the short lived Xenomania duo of Niara Scarlett and Giselle Somerville) recorded for their cancelled debut album, "Do You Know Your Daughter's On The Roof?", which was due out the same year but cancelled after their single "Looking For A Place" flopped.

Their version is here at about 15:15 on this video of their album sampler:

I've lived with the Mania version for 18 years (I acquired their album sampler on eBay around 2006 in lieu of the fact that a handful of their songs on it, namely "I'm Not Shy" and "Money In My Pocket", ended up re-recorded by Frank, the band who supported GA on the Chemistry Tour who had their own T4 show Totally Frank! Small old world really when it comes to Xenomania).

Posted by: Rob Jan 18 2024, 09:17 AM

I really can't express how inspiring it is to see a team who really care about their artists managing these re-releases. The fact we're getting a whole bunch of unreleased stuff, in addition to remixes, rare tracks, etc. is just unheard of and really reads like fanfic. There's a lot of acts Spice Girls who should really take note with how much love has been poured into this project.

Looking forward to the electronic mix of I’ll Stand By You too, missed that when I first saw the track listing, i’m assuming that was the version they were originally going to release before they went to the standard ballad version for CIN

it's a good day for my pop faves with Ariana and Girls Aloud releasing on the same day *.*

Pre-ordered the blue vinyl and 3CD set. FormUK have excelled themselves once again - thank goodness they contacted Universal to get involved! I can't lie and say I'm a bit disappointed there's no T-Shirts or even hoodies like last time, but I am imagining that they are channelling efforts for those into the tour, which is understandable. Guess I'll be making my own to make up for it using what assets are available!

Interesting to see this, different options for the album cover?

I like the bottom right one the most!

I like the look of the blue vinyl and fits well with the album cover itself.

Posted by: Liam.k. Jan 19 2024, 05:14 PM

I've pre-ordered the blue vinyl! Looking forward to those unreleased songs, especially - as mentioned - hearing 'Wicked Game' after all this time, although I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't live up to expectations! laugh.gif Intrigued by the electronic mix of 'I'll Stand By You'.

I think there's a lot to love from their debut album, but I agree this is where they really found their sound. I think lyrically it really captures the thoughts of five young women; I know the Xenomania team would get lyric ideas from the girls just telling them about their day and that really comes across on this album.

Posted by: One_For_Sorrow Jan 21 2024, 08:40 PM

Wow wasn’t expecting Wicked Game. I’m looking forward to hearing it!

Wasn’t it meant to lead the Chemistry album though? Not complaining. smile.gif

Posted by: -Jay- Jan 21 2024, 10:38 PM

It was scheduled to come out as a single in May 2005 (during the What Will the Neighbours Say? tour). So I think with the single being scrapped before that point, it can comfortably be slotted into the second album era instead of the third!

Have to say, even on 17 seconds alone, not at all what I was imagining - in the best possible way! It almost sounds a bit dubsteppy - before that was even a thing.

Posted by: ThePensmith Feb 2 2024, 10:03 PM

Also just noticed something - all the videos from this album now have special thumbnails like the ones they did for the SOTU reissue! (Although this does mean Jump now has a new thumbnail too. Canonically, I feel like it belongs with the last album era as well but them's the rules I guess)

Posted by: -Jay- Feb 3 2024, 07:50 AM

^ Ooh I like the updated thumbnails! Kind of surprised that they went to the trouble of redoing it for Jump, but I’m glad they have because the previous one was using a LQ still!

Nicola mentioned on her story that Wicked Game has “new production tweaks”, but then removed that text, so maybe we weren’t supposed to know that detail lol. So it seems it’s not going to be precisely what existed in 2005, but I don’t mind, if they’ve touched it up to make it a better listening experience then that’s great.

Posted by: gooddelta Feb 3 2024, 09:04 AM

Wow, wasn't expecting that production, I thought it would be a straight sonic retread like See The Day or I'll Stand By You. Intriguing!

Posted by: spiceboy Feb 3 2024, 10:26 AM

Didn’t Sarah say in her book that they filmed a video for this? Wonder if we will see that as part of this eras campaign?

Posted by: -Jay- Feb 3 2024, 10:46 AM

Nope, only that one was planned and that it had a concept, but they didn’t go as far as shooting it!

I'll Stand By You was not meant to be that straight at first, but the more daring version was deeemed inappropriate for a charity single - which is exactly why I'm so excited we'll get to hear it finallly!

The 2nd album was deffo a big step up and more exciting but the album reissues are largely a high cash in by the record companies. I’ve already got the cd singles box set and there is very little if any new material on these releases to make them worth buying.

Posted by: Jessie Where Feb 16 2024, 12:00 PM

I think as far as reissues go, this is actually one of the better ones in terms of value for what you're getting. You've got 3 previously unheard songs, a host of remixes which have been previously unavailable and different edits of existing tracks in studio form.

It's not like a Spiceworld kind of affair where they've done the bare minimum laugh.gif

Posted by: -Jay- Feb 16 2024, 01:43 PM

Yeah! I don’t see how this reissue could feasibly be much better than it is. I struggle to think of any other pop reissue that includes as many as 14 tracks that can’t be found on any previous commercial releases. thinking.gif

To be honest in this day and age we’re lucky that the reissues aren’t just the vinyl. Girls Aloud’s team/label curating a new track list for cd and digital is additional effort, and they’ve put more into this track list than they really needed to.

All of the remixes are already available on the box set. The edits don’t really appeal so that leaves just 3 new tracks. It’s a good set if you don’t already own the box set but for me it’s just a cash in and not something I’m interested in paying over £20 to buy.

Posted by: -Jay- Feb 23 2024, 12:37 AM

Excluding the edits, there's still these that aren't found on the box set! -

Deadlines & Diets (Version 2)
I'll Stand By You (Electronic Mix)
I'm Every Woman
Wake Me Up (Flip & Fill Remix)

(Obviously it's anyone's prerogative to not want to buy it, my posts aren't fighting against that. My posts are just to highlight that there are a fair few tracks included that have never appeared on previous Girls Aloud releases. Including some edited mixes is a step beyond the label just settling to only include the original full lengths. I'm happy they've had a thorough search through the vaults to make a CD/Digital reissue as worthwhile as a reissue is feasibly ever going to be - at least they can be listened to on streaming for those who aren't fussed to buy it)

Posted by: pippa Feb 23 2024, 12:44 AM

The label have clearly put work into the release and haven't just delivered a cheap cash in release.

I agree it is a cash in as someone who owns all their albums and singles plus the box set, £20 is alot for 3 songs. It is a great album to buy though if you don't own the original WWTNS. As for the merchandise it is very plain. I am holding off until the tour for Merchandise.

Re-issues are always cash-ins, and anniversary re-issues are becoming more and more common, but I do think this has a significantly higher amount of effort put into it than some do (even more so than SOTU with the unheard songs). Not only is it a more complete product representing the entire era for fans to own, but it tidies and adds to their streaming presence too which I think is very important, not to mention the vinyl release!

Posted by: Liam.k. Mar 8 2024, 12:14 AM

Their version of 'Wicked Game' is lush! I don't know how it would have faired as a single, let alone potential lead for 'Chemistry', but it's nice to have it finally available and for it to not disappoint. 'Disco Bunny' is a banger and 'Baby When You Go' is lovely too.

I thought the electronic mix for 'I'll Stand By You' would have different production but it's only a slightly enhanced beat to it. Do I spy some of the girls singing new lines and giving different vocal takes?

They made the right choice with the final version of 'Wake Me Up', that original first verse just doesn't work for me. I've never heard the demo version of 'Love Machine', was this previously available? If this is what the girls were first presented with then I'm not surprised they hated the song! laugh.gif

Posted by: Liam.k. Mar 8 2024, 12:29 AM

'Disco Bunny' is on the New Music Friday playlist! cheer.gif

As the very last song.

Posted by: -Jay- Mar 8 2024, 12:52 AM

I’m delighted with these “new” songs wub.gif

Baby When You Go is really, really lovely! I just wish that it had a middle 8 to flesh it out fully, it has a slight feeling of incompleteness. I’m not sure if it was them or Mania who recorded it first. Mania’s version apparently does have a middle 8. I’d take this song over History or Loving Is Easy any day. I think a fully completed version of this could have stood out in a good way had it been included on the original album.

Disco Bunny - it’s a banger! 💃🏻🪩🐇 It’s definitely my favourite of the three! Maybe it’s a bit rash to say this within an hour of hearing it but I already think it’s better than the B Sides we got from this era, and honestly maybe even some of the original album tracks. ohmy.gif

It’s very surreal to hear Wicked Game, 19 years on from the tease of it being their new single. I actually really like it! Lush is a great word to describe it. The production and their vocals are very dreamy. However I do think the right call was made to not go ahead with it as a single. It is a bit one note throughout and I can’t really imagine it seeming like an exciting release from them in 2005. Although scrapping it altogether was pretty harsh laugh.gif! It worked out well in the end though. Girls Aloud having a mythical unreleased track that was almost a single was an interesting footnote in their career and increased the excitement to finally hear it.

I think I’ll have to have a closer listen to their released version of I’ll Stand by You vs. this electronic mix to detect all differences, because on first listen it seems only quite subtle. I do notice the production difference in the chorus, but it’s not like it’s a radical difference from the finished product.

^ I did chuckle seeing Disco Bunny as the very last track on NMF! laugh.gif Like a token addition. Spotify you could have done better than that! At least it’s there at all I suppose. kink.gif

Posted by: Liam.k. Mar 8 2024, 01:23 AM

The unheard tracks seem to be going down really well online and I can definitely see some personalised album tracking lists being made! I'd comfortably place 'Disco Bunny' over some of the released tracks, I wasn't quite sure of it fitting with the sound of the album but I suppose it's not that far removed from 'Big Brother' or 'Thank Me Daddy'. I've always had a soft spot for 'Loving is Easy' but I think the only B-side that could have had a place on the album was 'Androgynous Girls'.

I wasn't expecting any Girls Aloud on NMF but thought I'd check anyway just on the off chance, it is kinda hilarious how they've placed it dead last!

Posted by: -Jay- Mar 8 2024, 04:56 AM

I played all of Disc 2, so I heard Loving Is Easy and History for the first time in many years. It actually reminded me that I quite like Loving Is Easy ater all! History is ok. I remember I found it so boring when it came out, but it's nice enough.

~~~
Regarding the performance edits at the end of Disc 2, which are tagged as:
Love Machine - CD:UK Edit
The Show - Popworld Edit
I'll Stand by You - TV Edit
Wake Me Up - Off the Record Edit
I had these downloaded for many years; the first three leaked from a Polydor Sampler CD-R, while Wake Me Up was initially released on a Promo CD and eventually included on 'Ten'. I just had them tagged as "(Performance Edit)" because the above tags didn't exist until this year.
In I'll Stand by You there are some vocal differences compared to the original album/single version! I'm not sure if I noticed them years ago...
Sarah sings 'Cause I've seen the dark side too instead of Kimberley
Nadine sings "When the night falls on you, you don't know what to do" instead of Cheryl
Nadine sings "Come on and talk to me now" instead of Kimberley
Nadine sings "I get angry too" instead of Nicola
These differences all apply to the Electronic Mix too! Therefore the TV Edit has the same vocal structure as the Electronic Mix (it's also the same length), but it has the production of the longer album/single version.
Anyway, that's quite interesting! At some stage they must have thought the vocals needed a fairer distribution.
Posted by: Lukuzz Mar 8 2024, 08:45 AM
Loving all 3 of the ‘new’ tracks on first listen, Wicked Game cover is so good, I do love all the singles from this era though so not sure how it would have faired.
Disco Bunny is great, bit of a banger, I can’t imagine it on the original album, Baby When You Go would have been the best fit of the 3 I think to be on the original album.
Was expecting more from the electronic mix of I’ll Stand By You it’s not as different as I thought it would be, but still can’t complain!
Posted by: One_For_Sorrow Mar 8 2024, 09:10 AM
Really looking Wicked Game. It’s great to finally be able to hear it.
Posted by: gooddelta Mar 8 2024, 10:03 AM
Obsessed with Disco Bunny, what a chorus!
Wicked Game is very subtle, definitely think it would have struggled as a lead single, not that I dislike it. The production is very nice.
The Love Machine demo has definitely been released before as part of the singles boxset and on a Popjustice compilation. The bare bones are there but the lyrics don’t work. The final part is sonically interesting, some of those sound effects used remind me of the intro to Me Plus One by Annie, which was released the same year.
Posted by: Jessie Where Mar 8 2024, 12:54 PM
Gosh, between all the excitement of Kylie + Madonna and Ariana actually releasing a good album again I've only just got round to hearing all these! The gays have certainly been fed and watered today.
I pretty much agree with all of this word for word! It's somewhat surreal we finally get to hear 'Wicked Game', especially as it was accepted the recording of it had been lost and nobody knew where it was!
The Show (Bang Bang Klub Vocal Mix) - 7:38 (originally 8:46)
The Show (Gravitas Club Mix) - 6:15 (originally 6:50)
Midweek #10! biggrin.gif
Posted by: Willm Mar 11 2024, 05:18 PM
I'm not going to lie I'm a bit disappointed with #10 I thought it would be higher than the new release by Bananarama which is at #6 and only just above Kylie who is at #11 with a vinyl release and no bonus tracks
Posted by: sammy01 Mar 11 2024, 05:55 PM
No cheap CD will kill its release as I said. It will barely sell another copy rest of the week as people wont fork out 20 or 30 quid on a whim purchase.
Posted by: -Jay- Mar 11 2024, 05:57 PM
I guess Bananarama have the edge because they're doing active promo, they've done hmv signings & TV appearances! Whereas for Girls Aloud it's essentially restricted to their social media.
I had hoped for a higher start than Sound of the Underground and ultimately for WWTNS to do better than it. So being a place lower in the midweeks isn't the most encouraging start for that being achieved. I guess all we can do is see what the rest of the week holds and hope that it can stay Top 40! cry.gif Wish I could find out what WWTNS' sales are today but unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to. Maybe somebody might know on Popjustice if the question is asked there? thinking.gif
Again I do agree with this, will be interesting to see how it charts. I think SOTU could have gone top 30 even maybe top 20 if they had done the cheap CD and cassette alongside it.
Posted by: Padamic Tension Mar 11 2024, 08:52 PM
Yes, most of the sales are probably already achieved apart from maybe a few late shipments and a handful of fans ordering this week.
I also agree that the price point is likely freezing out a more casual fan making a purchase. £23 on a CD and approaching £30 on a vinyl is quite a commitment!
It seems that Universal is completely driven by achieving purchases of highly priced items, and aren't so fussed about how that ends up being reflected in the UK chart thinking.gif I mean the fact that they forged ahead with What Will the Neighbours Say? must indicate that Sound of the Underground reaching #42 with a little below 3,000 sales wasn't an offputting factor for them, to continue the Girls Aloud reissues project. So at the very least they must have been satisifed with the money that was generated!
It's a shame they're disregarding a cassette. Not that it would be a massive seller but even a few hundred would likely bump up the position a fair few places! 1 x CD format and 2 x Vinyl formats isn't pushing the boat out compared to some reissues.
I'm a bit disappointed as well, in the way that this re-release is far superior to the first one, and the original album itself is infinitely better than the first album. I also thought the "new" songs would make it all a lot more attractive. Get some tiktokers on board and make Wicked Game number 1 now.
Tomorrows midweek update will give us a good idea of where it will end up on Friday and hopefully its the right side of the top 40.
Thanks for posting! wub.gif That was an enjoyable read.
It still blows my mind that they were ever on such shaky ground regarding getting a chance to progress to album 2… until Jump reassured the powers that be that it was worth continuing on with Girls Aloud. Thank goodness things worked out as they did!
Interesting to know that Wicked Game was intended to lead a reissued WWTNS back then. At least I don’t think we ever had confirmation that a reissue was a plan back then. thinking.gif I wonder if it would have been a good idea to get more sales out of that era before moving on to Chemistry?
I know right... I mean, I know the album wasn't a blockbuster seller but it was far from a flop and every single thing they'd released had gone top 3. Surely they must have seen the potential there to build on it? (Although like you say, thank heavens they did!)
#22 in today's mids, might be touch and go as to whether ity stays top 40?
'Sound of the Underground' was #21 on the Wednesday update so 'Neighbours' is literally one place behind again. I fear this is destined to just miss out on the Top 40 as well! sad.gif
Posted by: Padamic Tension Mar 13 2024, 06:28 PM
I have a feeling they will manage to stay in the top 40.
Posted by: Willm Mar 13 2024, 06:51 PM
It will be frustrating if it misses Top 40 but I can live with that as long as the sales are better than the debut all this extra effort for this release definitely warrants selling more copies
Posted by: Lukuzz Mar 13 2024, 06:54 PM
Oh damn, would have loved Top 40 but looks like probably 45-50ish region I think
Just read this - fantastic and so insightful!
I wrote about the album on my blog this week as well if anyone wants to read: https://wp.me/p4UO9N-2Vc
I've so loved reimmersing myself in this album era again. It's such a perfect reissue! And I love the unreleased gems we've gotten as well.
Posted by: Liam.k. Mar 13 2024, 10:28 PM
Finished reading that article too and loved it! This is the sort of pop insight I crave! I'd love them to do this for their other albums - I want to know more about their version of 'Made of Glass' that was written in the 'Chemistry' sessions but was recorded by Kylie instead.
Agreed! I guess it wasn't just about chart performance, it was also perceptions of the girls' image and not yet distinguishing their own personalities; would this be a band people wanted to buy into long-term?
Shocked to discover they were in any danger at the end of The Sound of The Underground era.
We can be thankful the right decisions were made.
#35 in the UK! So it did make the top 40 in the end heart.gif
Pretty good result I’d say!
Posted by: -Jay- Mar 15 2024, 05:10 PM
cheer.gif so glad that it held on to the Top 40! That’s what I wanted to see, it outperforming Sound of the Underground. biggrin.gif
From Music Week:
QUOTE
Girls Aloud’s second studio album, What Will The Neighbours Say?, reached No.6 in 2004, and re-enters at No.35 (2,925 sales) after being released in a number of new editions, while Kylie Minogue’s ninth studio album, Body Language – No.6 in 2003 – re-enters at No.34 (2,943 sales) after being released on vinyl for the first time. Cumulative sales: What Will The Neighbours Say? – 618,569, and Body Language – 407,731.
Thrilled it stayed Top 40!
Pleased to see it stayed top 40! That's amazing news 👏🏻 ☺️
Posted by: -Jay- Mar 15 2024, 06:29 PM
How funny, that is the exact same amount of copies that Sound of the Underground sold last year in its release week! laugh.gif
I'm glad that on this occasion that resulted in being within Top 40 rather than missing out.
Posted by: Padamic Tension Mar 15 2024, 06:31 PM
Great it stayed top 40 although I was sure it would more than SOTU.
Me too, honestly... I just hope the label is satisifed with this outcome. Universal clearly put more effort into sourcing unreleased songs and mixes for this release, yet it's essentially achieved the same outcome as the more straightforward "just throw on what was already released" Sound of the Underground. I hope they'll continue to go the extra mile for the next few reissues in regards to content.
Anyway, as a fan the most important thing for me is the mere fact that these items exist... I had dreamt so long for Girls Aloud albums to be pressed on vinyl and it's now become a reality! Plus hearing previously unheard songs is great fan service.
Yaaaay!
Nice we got an updated total, although that means it's sold next to nothing in the last 15-20 years
YES!!! So happy it stayed top 40!
23rd November 2023 - 614,400
15th March 2024 - 618,569
Posted by: Padamic Tension Mar 16 2024, 08:20 PM
Sales are pretty none existent for the album over the years but at least there greatest hits picks up decent enough sales.
Posted by: Anita Hanjaab Mar 16 2024, 08:29 PM
Yeah everyone buys the gh, but they were always a singles band tbh. Becsuse of the production, their album tracks sound veeery samey anyway
Posted by: -Jay- Mar 16 2024, 08:43 PM
It's selling at a rate of about 4,000 a year (not including the reissue boost this week), which I feel is surprisingly decent for an ancient studio album from a UK girl group?
Posted by: ThePensmith Mar 16 2024, 09:30 PM
Quick question - and maybe it's an obvious one. Would this include streams from the album on The Collection?
I assume it would!
Posted by: JosephBoone Mar 17 2024, 05:25 PM
Yes it will! Multiple versions of a song are combined, so The Show for example will have its remixes etc combined and count towards WWTNS? (the exception to this is live albums which only count the live versions, assume remix albums are treated similarly). Streams count for a maximum of one studio album that has made the top 40, any studio album that hasn't made the top 40, and a maximum of one hits collection (the one with the highest pure sales unless otherwise nominated) - which only really affects Girls Aloud as far as Jump goes, which I assume will have its streams count towards Sound of the Underground nowadays.
Anyone know if it was top 200 last week or did it drop straight out?
