Songs: Top 300

2 Marcus & Martinus - Air | 2-3-1-2-2-2-5-10-13-18-16-23-22-23-21-21-20-19-18-22-24-28-26-27-23-26-28-31-30-31-33-38-37-x

I've been watching Melodifestivalen to some degree from 2013 onwards, and fully since 2017. It's always a highlight of the year, and I am guaranteed a handful of really great pop tracks. Two of them feature in this year's top 20, with Theoz dropping out at #19, and Marcus & Martinus handing the contest a sixth EOY top 10 hit. It's a pretty big contrast to the contest Melfest feeds into - Eurovision, of course. Whilst I'm obviously a big Eurovision fan too, only one Eurovision track has ever made my EOY top 10; in 2016, Frans topped my end of year chart with If I Were Sorry after representing Sweden at Eurovision, which means he counts within the Melodifestivalen tally as well...!

It's quite a return to form for the contest, too. Last year's highest track was Klara Hammarström's Run to the Hills, which finished 39th EOY, just one place higher than her fellow competitor Lancelot's Lyckligt slut. It makes sense though, as 2023 was the first year to produce *two* Melfest #1 hits. The contest's had one #1 hit every year since 2016 (bar 2018, where Benjamin Ingrosso's Dance You Off was kept at #2 twice), but in 2023, Theoz took the top spot initially, before Marcus & Martinus unleashed Air. With the way the contest works, the direct finalist tracks aren't released until the conclusion of the final heat, to level the playing field in some way, so I had to wait a week after hearing Air for the first time to be able to stream it!

Marcus & Martinus are perhaps a curious choice on paper to compete in Melodifestivalen. The identical twins are Norwegian and don't actually speak Swedish, but they have notched up a series of hits in Sweden nonetheless, notably the boppy Elektrisk peaking at #8 there. When Air arrived, though, they hadn't charted in Sweden in five years (and two years still in Norway), so it was something of a comeback despite regular releases in the interim. This applies to my chart too; though they had a few minor hits in between, including as recently as 2021, Air was their first top 10 hit since Remind Me almost exactly five years prior, debuting at #2 behind The Kid LAROI's I GUESS IT'S LOVE?.

There's a lot to say about Air as a song. Its production is moody and dark, and I think it'd be interesting enough just as an instrumental as there are so many great nuances. The lyrics describe someone whose impact is so powerful, Marcus & Martinus can breathe without air in their presence. The drop is fantastic and came to life on the Melfest stage, so it was awesome to experience it via its life performance first. By far their most instant song since Remind Me, and it immediately became their highest peaker in my chart.

In the Melfest final, Air finished in second place. So close but so far! There's nothing to complain about though, because they were beaten by Loreen with Tattoo, the eventual winner of Eurovision itself. After the final, Air climbed to #1, notching up just
a single week at the top spot, but it's hard to argue with such an enduring chart run. When it left the top 40, Air had more than three times as many top 40 weeks as their next highest (Make You Believe in Love, with 9 weeks, though 247365 has since beaten that too by just one week). It was their first of three singles in 2023, both of which made my top 40, and their return to Melfest is happening next month. I'm really excited to hear what they can bring this time around! Here in my EOY, it's their best performing track by far, and the highest Melfest track since 2019, when Oscar Enestad finished first with I Love It.

Songs: Top 300

1 S Club - These Are the Days | 3-1-1-1-1-1-3-6-5-7-7-6-3-4-5-7-16-13-14-18-18-18-...

In my household, most S Club tracks were #1 hits in my childhood. My dad bought me their Sunshine album as a Christmas present in 2001 to try and get me into some music, and I was just four years old at the time. That moment ended up shaping my taste, and quite frankly, many aspects of my life too. One thing led to another as far as my music taste went, but S Club have always been the foundation. I grew up listening to Bradley, Hannah, Jo, Jon, Paul, Rachel and Tina's albums, knowing the words to every track, and watching every episode of the TV series countless times. They felt like my friends, even though I hadn't met them. The S Club was always inclusive and friendly, and that exuded through their music as much as their TV series.

2023 became the year of S Club quite early on. With rumours of a reunion to celebrate 25 years since the formation of the group, the S Club 7: Reunited Tour was confirmed in February, to much hype from myself. A Buzzjack artist forum came in advance of the announcement, and I really felt like I was reliving my childhood as I revisited all of their tracks in that week. I secured my tour tickets rapidly, with three dates booked and a meet & greet in London. I couldn't wait! I'd met Hannah beforehand at a comic con, but hadn't ever met the others. A group photo with my seven favourite people was an unmissable opportunity.

Then came the sad news. In April, we learned the wonderful Paul had passed away suddenly. I was gobsmacked and upset. The tour no longer felt important because my favourite group would never be complete again. In the months that followed, the group took their time to grieve, before returning to announce that the tour would continue under a new name, The Good Times Tour (named in honour of the song Paul sang lead on from the Sunshine album), but without Hannah. It felt bittersweet, but my excitement built up again. It always would, and I had no doubt that the five remaining members would bring their A game to this tour.

Among all of this, I never expected new music. People asked them the question of whether they'd record anything new multiple times during the initial press they did for the tour, and it was always a "maybe", but I didn't think it'd come. When rumours arrived about a new single in July to commemorate Paul, I could hardly believe it. After 20 years, there was finally going to be a brand new* song to add to S Club's discography (* I say brand new because previously unreleased Rain was finally gifted to fans in 2015 after being used in their Viva S Club series), and I couldn't quite believe it. I went to bed the night before feeling so excited knowing that the next morning, I'd be able to immediately hear a brand new S Club song.

So, of course, the first thing I did when I woke up that day was to load YouTube on my phone. I didn't get out of bed, I didn't check any other notifications, I just went to hear the song in conjunction with its video. By its conclusion, I had tears in my eyes. Happy and sad. Sad because the video focuses on so many great Paul moments and how he's not there to join them in their newest venture like he wanted to be, but happy because they honoured him so well. The song impressed me from the start, feeling like a classic S Club track (which makes sense as it was written, in its initial version, back during their heyday), and each member sounded great on their solos - I was so happy they all had a moment on the song! Lyrically it's so positive and uplifting, and the middle 8 - "we'll all be back together someday" - is touching. The video was perfect too, so many great clips and I loved seeing the five of them interacting together, before driving off in a trademark red convertible like in the TV series!

With a midweek release, These Are the Days debuted at #3, before beginning a five-week stint at #1 the next week, being mostly unrivalled for that duration (keeping Sarcastic Sounds' Someday Soon at #2 for four of those weeks). Months later, it hasn't left my top 20, and remained in the top tier amidst the arrival of The Good Times Tour, being one of nine S Club songs in the top 10 after I attended my first date. The meet-and-greet was a beautiful moment, and These Are the Days was one of the best moments on tour too. It feels like an integral part of their discography already, and it still brings me a lot of joy on each play. The band have promised more new music in 2024, so the S Club renaissance is truly on, and I know they'll be keeping Paul at the heart of all they do. As Bradley sings in the poignant final line of the song, "always remember you..."

I listened to These Are The Days at the start of your countdown but it's probably worth me listening again now at the end! It's quite a simple song but can absolutely see it becoming an earworm after a few listens, nice to hear them remeniscing over old times as well.

Thanks for posting this chart Joseph, I've enjoyed following along!

Your commentary for 'These Are The Days' was a beautiful read heart.gif I'm happy that you enjoyed their comeback so much after being a big fan for so many years!

Next nostalgic stop... the unheard Girls Aloud tracks ohmy.gif

I'm surprised that a Eurovision song hasn't made your top 10 since Frans! Will be interesting to see when that next occurs.

Congrats on finishing clap.gif has been a joy to follow happy.gif
