yep I think it's an error, mostly cos in the US the new songs are not top 200 but there are like 10 old songs that were featured in his new playlist that are all re-entering, so if people listened to those sure they also did stream the newies but must be some Spotify error, so will show up tomorrow

I haven't actually heard this Return of the Mack rework but I can't stand the original through overplay so that's not a great start. I do like plenty of dance reworkings done well though - Let Me Hold You, Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better) and Tobtok's Fast Car are some of my favourites recently.

When I first heard Black Beatles, it really didn't strike me as a UK Chart hit... it's not in the same vein as American crossover rap hits such as Trap Queen, 679, Panda or Don't Mind. So, fair play to them. Beat is good, but the song does drag on for a minute longer than it should.

Who are MiC LOWRY sleeping with to get position 1 on the Hot Hits UK playlist? It's a great record but it's ridiculous how much influence this playlist is having on the charts. How else would that Joel Adams record have spent 21 weeks on the chart? I notice it's finally fallen off the chart now it's come off that playlist. And it's never even been serviced to UK radio - so what was that all about?!

Clean Bandit are well ahead on sales so even if they were #1 on Spotify they'd have to have a considerable lead to challenge for the official #1. Seems very unlikely it'll happen now but they are #1 in the US by miles and probably getting lots of money so I'm sure they are happy.

I think the song needs some credit for its popularity though. it's evidently quite popular among those who have heard it or it wouldn't have stuck around for quite so long, many songs have come and gone from the Spotify top 50 during its stay there. The playlists have been a huge help of course but if the song wasn't popular, people would likely skip it or just not listen and it wouldn't have done quite this well!

It's hard to gauge songs like "Please Don't Go" without some sort of listener survey. What I've noticed is that a lot of these songs that tend to get egregious amounts of streams via playlists is that they're often extremely innocuous, often in the mold of the hits of today without the charisma to go all the way to the top. If people are using these playlists, they may well be listening in the background and will only skip if something abrasive comes on, which "Please Don't Go", "Capsize", "Fresh Eyes" etc are not. Also if I recall correctly, free listeners on mobile devices are forced to use shuffle, and only get a very limited number of skips, so often these playlists net a guaranteed baseline of plays no matter where on the playlist they are. Someone should put a Merzbow song on all the playlists as an experiment

We'll see an even more extreme version of this at Christmas when the top 200 is flooded on Xmas Eve/Day with completely bizarre entries. Last year I recall seeing Alphabeat's Xmas song and Celine Dion's cover of Happy Xmas (War Is Over), amongst others, purely because they were on a prominent festive playlist.

And, as you say, free listeners are not going to find these songs offensive enough to use up one of their skips, so will just leave them playing (and many paying listeners won't bother to skip either, I mean who the hell wants to get up from the dinner table just to change a song!). It's all very bizarre, but I don't see any way of rectifying the issue because Spotify users would be up in arms if curated playlists suddenly disappeared, as many just can't be bothered to make their own or just want to hear the hits etc...

I do wish the payola would stop but manipulation like this is hardly anything new, record companies have just had to find a new way of getting around things to make money and get their artists' songs into the charts.

I'd like to see Spotify do a better job at localising hits, they have playlists exclusively for different countries, but it's clear that their intention is to game a song into the charts, otherwise they wouldn't put the same random flops on all of Today's Top Hits, Hot Hits UK, Hot Hits Australia, Hot Hits New Zealand, Hot Hits Canada etc for 6 straight months.

I'd agree with that. The likes of Please Don't Go, Fresh Eyes and When You Love Someone have interesting been loitering around near enough the same peaks for around the same amount of time in both the UK and Sweden.

Indeed, When You Love Someone has basically done nothing on sales but bagged itself a spot on the new Now album, mainly I would assume due to its huge volume of passive curated playlist listens bagging it a run in the top 75! So from essentially just being put onto a prominent Spotify playlist, it's now going to bag itself a spot in around a million homes, as that's the amount the winter Now albums generally sell. Mind boggling exposure for something that really hasn't caught on at all!

The Vamps, struggled with streaming up until they were added, and are not looking to probably re-enter the top 40. There's only 3 on New Music Friday UK which has more of an effect here than the world version.

I also got a notification when I opened up Spotify on my phone that The Weeknd's new album was out, so it does seem that the label really are splashing the cash to promote the album. It's no different than labels paying for iTunes banners though, definitely legal.

come on, Tori Amos has a new single and is totally ignored and not put on the New Friday Music, even they did the same for James Arthur when his song was first released....the Weeknd has a new album and has 5 songs in the new Muisc Friday (at least here in Denmark).... never seen an artist even having 2 songs when releasing a new album... why the special treatment? thats payola, of course it's not illegal, but I'd complain if I was another label

Tori Amos and The Weeknd aren't exactly comparable though, one of them is far more relevant to Spotify users and it's in both Spotify's and The Weeknd's interests that his album gets a lot of promo on Spotify.

I'm wondering if 'All I Want For Christmas' could actually go number within the next two weeks It could be helped if iTunes decide to put almost all christmas songs 59p and advertise it on the main page, I remember it helped Mariah go briefly top 10 on iTunes for a while a year or two ago?
