Andy Murray has announced his retirement from tennis by saying the Australian Open could be his final event although he hopes to retire at Wimbledon is because of his hip problems, it's a shame to him retire, the best British male tennis player that we've had. 3-time Grand Slam champion, twice a winner at Wimbledon, won the ATP Tour World Final to reach #1 in the rankings, won the Davis Cup with Great Britain, twice a Olympic champion. Really sad about Murray, without a doubt he's one of the best ever. I suspect the practice match against Djokovic made him think it's time to call quits. I'd have loved to have seen him win another few Grand Slams as he deserves it.

That was a great final. Osaka did well to keep her composure after collapsing in the second set. The womens' tournament has been much more interesting to watch compared to the mens' so I hope we get a really good mens' final tomorrow with the top 2 seeds playing each other.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal breezed into the Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals, but Britain's Cameron Norrie could not progress from the last 16.
Top seed Djokovic, 31, needed just one hour and eight minutes to win 6-3 6-0 against American Taylor Fritz.
Second seed Nadal eased past Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov in a 6-4 6-1 win on the clay - having now won 23 consecutive sets at the Masters 1000 tournament.
Norrie lost 6-2 7-5 to Italian Lorenzo Sonego, ranked 40 places below him.

Rafael Nadal suffered a shock 6-4 6-2 defeat by Italian Fabio Fognini in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.
The 32-year-old Spaniard, seeking his 12th Monte Carlo title, had won his past 18 matches at the event and lost only four of 76 in his career.
World number 18 Fognini, 31, will face Serb Dusan Lajovic in Sunday's final.

Andy Murray has been offered a wildcard to play at Queen's Club next month and will decide "nearer the time" if he will take it.
The three-time Grand Slam champion, 31, had hip surgery in January.
Murray said in March he was pain-free but rated his chances of playing in the Wimbledon singles at "less than 50%" and has not played competitively since.
The Fever-Tree Championships at Queen's in London will start on Monday, 17 June - two weeks before Wimbledon begins.

The 31-year-old Serb was eventually pushed by Chardy in the second set before earning a 6-1 7-6 (7-2) win.
Djokovic still has not dropped a set against the world number 47, having won all 13 of their meetings.

Swiss Federer saved match points in his quarter-final on Thursday but squandered two of his own in the second-set tie-break against Thiem.
Austria's Thiem eventually came through 3-6 7-6 (13-11) 6-4 to set up a meeting with world number one Novak Djokovic.

Britain's Kyle Edmund has suffered his fourth straight first-round defeat, losing 6-4 4-6 6-2 to Spain's Fernando Verdasco at the Italian Open.
Since being knocked out in the second round of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga last month, Edmund has lost in Monte Carlo, Munich, Madrid and Rome.
Ranked 14th in the world in October, the Englishman is now down at 27th.

American Nicole Gibbs has withdrawn from this month's French Open after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that was found by her dentist.
Gibbs, 26, said she was alerted to a growth on the roof of her mouth, with a subsequent biopsy coming back positive for salivary gland cancer.
The world number 117 will have surgery on Friday and said there is a "great prognosis" for this type of cancer.
She added she hopes to return for Wimbledon qualifying in June.

Roger Federer has criticised Italian Open organisers for doubling ticket prices after it was confirmed he would play.
Federer, 37, is playing the clay-court season for the first time since 2016.
The number three seed, who has a first-round bye and will begin his tournament against Portugal's Joao Sousa, said the decision was "disappointing".
"They made it in a way like they rewarded the fans who bought tickets earlier, which is sort of strange."
Federer added: "I just really hope it doesn't take away the fact I'm really happy to be here. There's going to be good crowds hopefully, good atmosphere."

Former French Open champion Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from this year's tournament because of her long-standing shoulder problem.
The 32-year-old world number 35 has not played since pulling out of an event in her native Russia at the end of January and had a small operation in February.
"Sometimes the right decisions aren't always the easiest ones," the five-time Grand Slam winner said.

The Lawn Tennis Association made a loss of £8.8m last year, and has lost more than £12m in two years.
This is despite British tennis' governing body getting a £7.2m increase in revenue from Wimbledon in 2018.

British number one Johanna Konta reached the Italian Open quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-4 win over Venus Williams - her second match of the day.
Konta, 27, came from a set down to beat world number eight Sloane Stephens before overcoming seven-time Grand Slam winner Williams, now ranked 50th.
Williams was hampered by injury and an assured Konta won in 72 minutes.
She will play Marketa Vondrousova in the last eight in Rome after the Czech beat Russian Daria Kasatkina.

Defending champion and eight-time winner Rafael Nadal beat fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-4 6-0 to reach the Italian Open semi-finals.
Nadal, who has lost in the semi-finals of his past four tournaments, came from 2-0 down to win in one hour 38 minutes.
He next faces 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas, who went through following the withdrawal of Roger Federer.

Britain's Katie Swan and Heather Watson are through to the second round of French Open qualifying after winning their opening matches on Wednesday.
Swan, who is ranked 208th, impressed in her Roland Garros debut with a straight sets 6-4 6-2 win over second seed Jil Teichmann.
Swan will face China's Wang Xiyu in the second round, with Watson set to take on Greece's Valentini Grammatikopoulou.

British number two Katie Boulter has been included the French Open main draw despite pulling out of the tournament earlier this month with a back injury.

Both the semi and final are scheduled for ITV4 but speculation on DS that should she make the final on Saturday they may swap with racing to put it on ITV1.

It's a complete washout today then.
Eurosport have just said the remaining quarters will be played tomorrow, all 4 semi finals on Friday then finals on Saturday and Sunday.
I would think that ITV could put the racing on ITV4 if Konta made the final.

Amanda Anisimova has reached the semi-finals of the French Open with a straight sets win over defending champion Simona Halep.
Romanian third seed Halep, 27, lost 6-2 6-4 to the unseeded 17-year-old.
Anisimova had never won a match at Roland Garros before this year but is yet to drop a set on the way to her first Grand Slam semi-final.
The world number 51 will face Australian eighth seed Ashleigh Barty, who beat American Madison Keys 6-3 7-5.

Ukrainian tennis player Helen Ploskina has been handed a lifetime ban and $20,000 fine after being found guilty of match-fixing and related offences by an independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer.
A Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) investigation established that the 22-year old, currently ranked 821 in ITF World Tennis singles, introduced another player to a corruptor, who offered that individual payment in return for agreeing to fix the outcome of matches. The offences took place in October 2016.
In addition, she was found guilty of two further offences of failing to report knowledge of corrupt activity and failing to co-operate with a TIU investigation.

Andy Murray's return to competitive action has been delayed until Thursday after rain washed out Tuesday's play at Queen's Club.
The 32-year-old is playing in the doubles alongside Feliciano Lopez after five months out and a hip operation.
The pair's match against Colombia's Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah was due to be played on Wednesday.
However, Kyle Edmund's match against Stefanos Tsitsipas is one of several to take its place in the order of play.

Nick Kyrgios accused a line judge of "rigging the game" and swore at the umpire in his first-round win at Queen's.
Kyrgios, 24, also berated himself for "playing Fifa until 3am" before beating Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena.
The world number 39 ranted at umpire Fergus Murphy after losing a set point which he thought was a double fault.
Kyrgios then lost 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 to teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime in his second match of the day.
Kyrgios was given a code violation for unsportsmanlike behaviour after his first tirade at Murphy, in which he said: "It couldn't have been further out. What are you doing?"

Britain's former world number one has been playing doubles since June as he regains fitness after hip surgery.

Coco Gauff has been awarded a wildcard for the women's singles at the US Open this month.
Gauff, 15, became the youngest player in the Open era to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon, beating former world number one Venus Williams en route to the fourth round.
The 2011 champion Sam Stosur will join Gauff in the main draw at the US Open after also accepting a wildcard.

American Amanda Anisimova has withdrawn from the US Open after the death of her father and coach Konstantin.
Anisimova, 17, reached the semi-finals of the French Open in June.
The world number 24 was due to play at Flushing Meadows for a second time after losing in round one in 2018.
British number one Johanna Konta came through a tricky encounter with Russia's Daria Kasatkina to reach the US Open second round.
Konta had started in devastating form, winning the first set in just 24 minutes, but was then frustrated before going on to triumph 6-1 4-6 6-2.
She is the only British woman left in the singles after Harriet Dart lost 6-3 6-1 to Romanian Ana Bogdan.

Edmund fought back from behind to take a fluctuating match into a decider.

Seventh seed Kei Nishikori overcame a spirited display from Bradley Klahn to book his place in the third round of the US Open with a 6-2 4-6 6-3 7-5 win.

Johanna Konta missed out on the US Open semi-finals after she was worn down by Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina.
Konta, 28, was unable to impose herself in a 6-4 6-4 defeat on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 16th seed, aiming to complete the set of major semi-final appearances, was forced into errors by 24-year-old Svitolina's impressive retrieving.
Another missed opportunity for Konta, I feel.

In a gripping conclusion, the 23-year-old squandered four match points but held his nerve in a dramatic tie-break.

That was some bottle to win from Bianca after a brilliant fightback from being pegged back to 5-5 in the second set from Serena. That is a sign of a great champion. what a year she has had. Will Serena ever get the record, I wonder. Bianca Andreescu was ranked 208th in the world in the autumn last year.

I watched it on the Betfair video stream. It only occupies about 20% of the screen but it's better than nothing. I thought she'd blown it after going from 5-1 up to 5-5 but she came through in the end. There always seems to be someone each time to stop Serena equalling that record. Well done Bianca.

Kim Clijsters is to make her tennis comeback at the age of 36 with a return to the WTA Tour in 2020.
The Belgian former world number one initially retired in 2007 to start a family, two years after winning her first Grand Slam at the US Open.
She returned in 2009 and won two more US Open titles and the Australian Open before her second retirement in 2012.
"I don't really feel like I want to prove something. I think for me it's the challenge," Clijsters said.

Andy Murray has taken a wildcard entry for next month's Shanghai Masters as he steps up his singles comeback.
The 32-year-old former world number one, who had hip surgery in January, will return to the ATP Tour in Zhuhai, beginning on 23 September.
He will then play in the China Open before Shanghai and the Antwerp indoor tournament the following week.
Murray is a four-time finalist and three-time winner in Shanghai, Asia's only Masters event.

The Hong Kong Tennis Open, due to start on 5 October, has been postponed because of ongoing protests.
The organisers said they would be better placed to have a "smooth running tournament...[at a] later time".
Hong Kong has for months been rocked by increasingly violent protests, triggered by an extradition bill.
The bill has now been withdrawn but protests have continued and have grown to reflect wider demands for democratic reform.
The Hong Kong Tennis Open was originally due to take place between 5-13 October.
It was to be held at Victoria Park - a vast green space with playgrounds as well as basketball and tennis courts - which has become the rallying point for many of Hong Kong's anti-government marches.

Great Britain will compete in January's inaugural ATP Cup following Andy Murray's late decision to enter.
Britain may not have qualified for the 24-team event had Murray not entered under his protected world ranking of two.
Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are also in the field for the new tournament, which will be played across three Australian cities.
The draw takes place at the Sydney Opera House on Monday.

Karolina Pliskova swept past Petra Martic in straight sets to win the WTA Zhengzhou Open in China.
Pliskova only needed 77 minutes to beat the Croatian 6-3 6-2 in a rain-interrupted final for her fourth tournament success of 2019.

Nick Kyrgios has received a suspended 16-week ban and $25,000 (£20,300) fine for "aggravated behaviour", subject to a six-month probationary period.
The Australian smashed two racquets in a bad-tempered Cincinnati Masters defeat by Karen Khachanov in August.
He was later fined $113,000 (£93,254) for five separate offences.
However an ATP investigation determined Kyrgios' "pattern of behaviour" over the past 12 months to be in violation of the governing body's code.
Both fine and suspension will be triggered if the 24-year-old does not comply with certain conditions - including avoiding any further code violations incurring a fine.

The American, 15, beat top seed and world number eight Kiki Bertens, of the Netherlands, 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 in Austria.
It was Gauff's first win over a top-10 player, at an event in which she only came into the draw as a lucky loser.
"I'm really happy and proud of myself," said Gauff, who will face Germany's Andrea Petkovic in the semi-finals on Saturday.
She becomes the youngest player to reach a semi-final on the WTA Tour since the Czech Republic's Nicole Vaidisova won in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 2004.

World number one and defending champion Djokovic was beaten by sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who came from a set down to win 3-6 7-5 6-3.
Alexander Zverev beat second seed Federer 6-3 6-7 (7-9) 6-3.
Tsitsipas will play Daniil Medvedev - who defeated Fabio Fognini - in the semi-finals while Zverev will face Matteo Berrettini.

Elina Svitolina will face world number one Ashleigh Barty in the WTA Finals showpiece in Shenzhen.
Ukrainian Svitolina, 25, had fought back to lead 5-7 6-3 4-1 when a tearful Belinda Bencic, 22, retired from their semi-final with cramp.
Karolina Pliskova, 27, forced the only break of the first set in the other semi-final, but Australian Barty, 23, controlled the second set.
Barty then claimed the decider, winning 4-6 6-2 6-3 to reach Sunday's final.

it's been such an underwhelming tournament with so many retirements + bad games watching Barty play, she's not that good, she can run but she doesn't have any signature shot the game yesterday with Pliskova felt like watching the world #101 vs the #102 instead of #1 vs #2 it's always the games of makes less errors

Alexander Zverev has denied using his phone during his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Finals.
Zverev was asked about the incident at a news conference after he was seen touching something in his bag at a changeover during Wednesday's defeat.
