OK, so a mate of mine just said that he hates Led Zeppelin and basically said they had one good song and if anyone was to name a led Zeppelin song they could only name one or two songs off their greatest hits album (Mothership)and that they wouldn't have heard of the rest. Personally I thought it was a bit ignorant because there's millions of people who could pick out every single one plus the zepp are/were one of the biggest bands on the planet. That was coming from some one who would prefer to listen to crap like that ex fat dancer from take that who needs precious autotune to perform. Where's the puke bucket. Anyway rant over. Thoughts on this

I don't really know them and I couldn't name any of their songs. Maybe I would recognise one or two if I heard them. Did they do Stairway To Heaven? I know they have an iconic status but I don't really know their music. I purchased their III album a few years ago but can't remember any song names or owt.

Led Zeppelin along with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple set the template for Heavy Metal in the 70s and 80s and their legacy can still be felt today.
Maybe the younger generation aren't aware so much but you only have to look at the excitement that their reunion a few years back generated to know that most over 30s are well aware of them.
Your friend makes himself sound a bit ignorant with his comments but it's hard tell and they're probably lovely
I'd recommend Led Zep I, II, IV, and Houses Of The Holy as their best whilst many love III but it's too folksy and a bit 'too Tolkien' for my tastes.

Most people would probably recognize Whole Lotta Love from it's use as the Top of The Pops theme (CCS' version, sort of)

My best of Led Zep introductory album would be

Communication Breakdown (I)
Dazed And Confused (I)
Whole Lotta Love (II)
Heartbreaker (II)
Immigrant Song (III)
Ramble On (II)
Black Dog (IV)
Rock N Roll (IV)
Stairway To Heaven (IV)
When The Levee Breaks (IV)
The Song Remains The Same (Houses Of The Holy)
Over The Hills And Far Away (Houses Of The Holy)
D'Yer M'ker (Houses Of The Holy)
Kashmir (Physical Graffiti)
Achilles Last Stand (Presence)
Hot Dog (In Through The Out Door)
Darlene (Coda)
