3.6m units for Wake Me Up cheeseblock.png

interesting for Unwritten to go 2x plat (1.2m units) just as it gets a chart comeback whereas Murder only just passed 1m units.

Posted by: Liam.k. 12th January 2024, 04:24 PM

I knew ‘Unwritten’ was likely quite comfortably passed 1m after seeing it was certified Gold in 2018 and Platinum in 2020. Much like ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’, I’ve noticed it’s been gaining relevancy again the past few years, ever since that video of that lad singing it in the car! laugh.gif

I’m of course thrilled with ‘Padam Padam’ being certified Gold! wub.gif A shame it just missed out on a 2023 Year End Chart appearance.

Posted by: Roba. 12th January 2024, 05:27 PM

Good to see 'SPACE MAN' go platinum!

Also finally for 'Padam Padam' too. Shame it was a couple of weeks late though.

Such a shame it didn’t make the top 100. It’s now the 5th 2023 release (plus any others this week) to pass gold but not be in the top 100. Interestingly, the previous one is this week’s number 11, ‘Popular’.

Posted by: One_For_Sorrow 12th January 2024, 06:18 PM

Great for Unwritten to be certified 2x Platinum.

Posted by: GreyAsh 13th January 2024, 01:20 PM

Someone please remind me: when was the cut-off release date for the original physical sales of older singles to be combined with streams for certification purposes?

Was it (Jan) 1989 or (Feb) 1994? I know, for example that the original sales of Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ (1994) are added to streams for certification purposes, but not ‘Fairytale of New York’ (1987). Does anyone know whether the cut-off point is 1989 because of the change in sales needed for each certification, or 1994 when Millward Brown took over producing the chart?

And also, do you have a link to where this is explained? Thank you

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra 13th January 2024, 02:16 PM

^ The cut-off point is February 1st, 1994 as that's when Gallup stopped compiling the charts and the defined universe sales era started.

In 1994 Millwood Brown took over chart compilation, Their new technology meant that all shops would now get EPOS machines and more shops would be added to the panel. By the end of the decade the chart return shops accounted for circa 95% of the market.

Posted by: Ongarboy 13th January 2024, 03:33 PM

That cutoff rule really discriminates against older artists. Surely modern technologies could retrospectively add in pre 1994 sales? It just means every Drake utterance that no-one has ever heard of nd that never made the top 100 gets certified multi platinum but pre 1994 songs that were top 10 smash hits that everyone can sing every word to fail to get the certification recognition they deserve!

'No one has ever heard of' except for, you know, the many hundreds of thousands of people that need to stream them for them to get those certifications kink.gif

I'm surprised not to see Last Christmas or All I Want For Christmas Is You in the list. Do they take SCR sales or ACR?

For certification, the SCR sales are taken - but both have received certifications towards the end of 2023.

Ha ha...I suppose I was being a bit tongue in cheek. Sure all these album tracks and singles that failed to chart have collected the streams legitimately and by enough people to receive the platinum certs...but I guess my annoyance is directly at the anomaly that exists for those older smash hits that had to accumulate units from scratch all over again after their original peak chart runs...

Posted by: JulianT 14th January 2024, 12:04 PM

I guess they’ve gone too far down the rabbit hole of not combining pre and post 94 to start now. sad.gif

I think the “no one has ever heard of” line, while not true, does touch on something real. It’s possible to have huge hits these days by appealing to certain demographics while passing much of the population by completely in a way that it probably wasn’t last century.

Posted by: Brer 14th January 2024, 12:46 PM

Oh yes I do acknowledge that. Death of the monoculture etc. etc. But it's still easier for (current) songs that do reach a wider audience to get certified for obvious reasons. And increasingly streaming is adding more and more to the totals of the established classics. Fair enough that it's still an uphill battle for the slightly less monolithic but still well known pre-1994 hits to get to an appropriate level of certification though.

Did they? I checked BPI website and the lastest one for AIWFCIY is 30.12.2022. Song sold more than 600K this year. Wham was also certified 09.12.2022 with 5 platinum and they sold even more this year.

Think that’s just the website glitching for some reason. Last Christmas went 6x platinum on 8/12/23 and AIWFCIY 8x platinum on 22/12/23.

If you click on either of those two tracks, it will bring you to their record, which has the correct number of platinum. I think you need to click on the artist though rather than the track.

Posted by: GTH 15th January 2024, 06:48 AM

So there is an issue with the site that has been going on for a little while, where recent certifications don’t show up when you search by the song/artist name. Bar December 1st, all the December certifications currently don’t show up when you search by name.

The website was updating at least once a month to fix this, as October and November had the same issue, but December hasn’t been fixed yet.

Posted by: Ongarboy 15th January 2024, 11:31 AM

It's also not listing the multi platinum number for those songs certified multi platinum as of certification date January 5th.

Do you know whether chart ineligible sales are taken into account e.g. when there are more than 3 variants released for songs?
They don't count for chart sales but what about BPI certifications?

Posted by: JulianT 15th January 2024, 04:07 PM

^ I’m sure they don’t count - if they did I reckon Now And Then would be silver by now.

Posted by: ben08 15th January 2024, 05:41 PM

Will need to see if Now And Then was certified last Friday. Counting ineligible sales, I have it at just over 200,000 sales.
They may be ineligible for the chart but they are recorded on the OCC database because Alan Jones gave us the sales figures. All sales should therefore contribute to certification. I'm sure this applies to other artists.
I would agree that the Beatles Thursday streams are lost forever.

No Silver cert last Friday so around 25,000 chart ineligible sales don't count for BPI certification, and presumably all-time sales.
It might never go Silver.

Posted by: Brer 16th January 2024, 01:27 PM

That's a bit dramatic! Surely will just take it a few extra weeks, it's not like it's dropped to 0 weekly sales now (it was still top 100 in the first week of the year!)

Certs for singles now available at HAVEN foruns (care of UKChartsPlus).

And if you search for Taylor Swift her last certificate is way back on 24/11/23. Similar for other artists.
Recent certs not yet added.

Oh yay Tomcraft getting that certification after all cheer.gif I was a little worried the new streams might not actually be counting towards its total due to the OCC database having the artist name wrong in the sales chart tongue.gif It has always seemed odd to me that it never managed to get certified before, fair enough that its sales at the time fell a bit short but I didn't think it was that forgotten of a song to have not been able to fill in the gap with streaming.

Also great to see Florence + The Machine trundling over the gold line with their brilliant latest album and 'No Idea' and 'Heart-Shaped Box' going platinum <3

It wouldn't surprise me if there is another total for the song in the OCC/BPI's database. It was on 128k by the end of 2003 and 156k to June 2008 - as you say, it doesn't feel like that much of a forgotten song to take over 15 years to manage 44k more sales.

The Billie and Peggy songs were my two favourite hits of last year, so that is also most pleasing.

See there was no need to worry about Now And Then. cheer.gif

A 'breakthrough' certification only applies to debut albums that have sold 30k, but have not yet reached the 60k mark needed for a Silver certification.

Huge week of good certifications for Lewis Capaldi.

Posted by: ben08 8th March 2024, 07:36 PM

62 singles this week (plus 5 albums and 1 video).

This is unexpected,
Trashmen - Surfin' Bird - Charly - Silver - Single - 08.03.2024 - 20.03.2006

Spent 4 weeks in the Top 100. Chart run (2/5/2009) 50, 79; then a year and a half later 3, 41. Unusual.
Their only hit. No albums.

Posted by: Brer 8th March 2024, 07:42 PM

It's a song from 1963, its first chart run was after being used in an episode of Family Guy and then the second run was a campaign for Christmas #1 (presumably inspired by said Family Guy episode). Was a top 5 hit in the US on its original release.

I assume it’s the case that their label didn’t bother to apply for a certification at the time it was a hit. None of the sales it achieved in 1993 and some of 1994 are taken into account. So the certification only really reflects how it’s done in the digital era.

Arctic Monkey's "Do I Wanna Know?" peaked at #11 and went 5x platinum in September of last year.

Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years" should pass 3 million sometime later this year as well based on the song getting another platinum certification every ~2 years the last 6 years.

Fleetwoods Mac's "Dreams" and "Go Your Own Way" will also likely get certified 5x platinum in the next year.

Bryan Adams "Summer of '69" should go 5x platinum in 2025 which will make it the first non-top 40 hit to pass 3 million I believe.

Posted by: Brer 2nd April 2024, 09:34 PM

I wonder why that CoComelon album has only just been appearing in the charts the last few weeks - it's obviously been "selling" at a decent rate for some time if it's gone gold now.

'EARFQUAKE' going platinum *.* a good week for Tyler with 'Goblin' finally going silver too.

(btw assuming the silver album titled 'Crybaby' is meant to be Lil Peep?)

Posted by: musicfan97 2nd April 2024, 10:23 PM

I’m surprised Endless Summer Vacation didn’t hit gold months ago. Flowers didn’t help the album that much but I suppose it also didn’t get much promotion.

Posted by: Jessie Where 2nd April 2024, 10:52 PM

Plus her spectacularly messing up the rest of the campaign (as per usual) didn't help.

Can I ask is the 1994 cutoff for singles only? Aren't album totals sold prior to 1994 included for certification purposes? If so, why can BPI recognise pre 1994 album sales but not single sales?

It’s the same for albums except for the ones that are included in the top selling albums of all time, like Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours or ABBA’s Gold.

One Moment In Time sold 327,590 copies in the 1980s bringing the total up to 727,590 chart units. That's a great figure for a #1 from 1988.

Those sales are what i was there or there abouts expecting it to be but on the certification list it's gone gold in the last week which means 400,000.

It's 400,000 since 1994. Sales before that are never included in these certifications.

I think this has been explained before, but these are all based on sales from 1994 onwards. It doesn't include what it had sold prior to then.

If we know that it sold 327k prior to 1994 why can’t the OCC just use that data? Do they not have all of the figures pre 1994 or something?

There's no problem with that at all! I know I wasn't being clear about what I was referring to, but rest assured it wasn't about your post!

A few of us have explained something a few times in recent weeks, which evidently hasn't been acknowledged by who we're trying to inform - which is becoming a bit frustrating.

However I know that my post was flippant and vague, so I apologise for that.

To answer your question from the other day:

Official Charts Company have compiled the charts since February 1994 and their sales database started from scratch at that point - I guess they wanted the data to purely be their own. So previous sales are disregarded for certifications by BPI, who go off the OCC's data. I guess it's a case of "that's just the way it is", regarding why they don't take into account sales data prior to then, for certifications. I suppose drawing sales from more than one database is complicated. I'm sure other posters may have a deeper insight into why this is.

Posted by: Maestro 19th April 2024, 07:44 PM

Apologies if this has been answered before, but is it easy to find pre-1994 sales numbers to combine them for songs that continue to be popular (Dreams, Don’t Stop Me Now, lots of Christmas songs etc.)

Liam might be better equipped to answer this than me, but I assumed that pre-1994 numbers were lifted from End of Year charts (if they were big enough sellers to make those lists) or otherwise have had their pre-1994 sales estimated.

I'm not sure if these lists are posted somewhere on BuzzJack, but here they are on Haven: https://fatherandy2.proboards.com/thread/41403/year-end-singles

Shocked Donna Summer - Hot Stuff is only gold as I thought it would be platinum at least. It was massive back in the day.

Posted by: MFR 19th April 2024, 10:15 PM

The reasons for not including sales from before 1994 are

1) These figures are estimates derived from sample sales and are not intended to be 100% accurate, just a best guess for public consumption, although they may be fairly close in many cases. Until 2013 certifications were based on copies shipped by record companies to the UK retail market. Such figures were known accurately to the record company making the application.

However, even from 1994 onwards retail sales figures were still estimates, but increasingly accurate. In reality what is being certified today is streams with an a reasonably accurate estimate of prior physical sales and download sales from 1994 included.

2) Even if a decision were made to include approximations from prior to 1994 the OCC would have to have estimates for everything ever released even if the single had only a few thousand sales prior to 1994, not just the big hits because so many songs are available to be streamed. Their database only debited in 1994 so that would be an impossibility.

The UKmix topic indeed has the exact panel sales but the multiplied up 'market' figures remain estimates or interpretations of what was sold to the public.

Sales from 1976 to 1979 will be coming next, once I've finished posting the 1991 weekly charts. The charts from 1976 to 1979 will be the monthly top 200s as I don't have weekly sales for that period. Once I've posted 1976 to 1979, I'll then be posting 1992, 1993 and the first few weeks of 1994. This means that I will have posted weekly (or monthly) and yearly sales figures from January 1976 to February 1994. This is a large part of the period for which actual chart sales data exists.

Posted by: Gambo 1st May 2024, 03:03 PM

It is a phenomenal effort just in the copying, collating, typing and posting these original chart Gallup/BMRB reports, and it should be clear for those interested in these over on UKMix but don't know the history that it couldn't have happened without three key chartographers of our time - Robbie himself who does the posting, KingofSkiffle who does the collation and database elements, and most importantly Kobyhadrian, who originally obtained all the reports from the BPI and spent Lord-knows how many man hours typing them up into a presentable form! They have between them summoned up a very thorough and as accurate as is available database of panel sales activity across almost two decades' worth of singles chart history, and the quality and consistency of the results now being steadily made accessible to us all can't be underestimated. I'm keen that fellow chart travellers on BuzzJack are aware of this if ever they investigate these chart reports and make use of them.

Yes, it still leaves us bereft of such detailed data for the three most recent decades since Millward Brown have been at the helm of official chart compilation, and of course the pre-1976 era when popular music as we know it truly established itself. But we've got to be grateful for what we get, and tolerate the reality that there'll almost certainly always be significant gaps where there is far less data, or none at all, accessible to us. Anything like exact weekly or monthly panel sales reports from the latter period probably no longer exist and the further one goes back, the less accurate any data becomes; as to the former, there will be much accurate and useful sales information stored, but unless we ever have the luxury of someone posting Millward Brown original reports, or somebody gets rare (and ludicrously expensive!) access to the OCC's database, one has to doubt that those decades will ever be covered in the same depth chart-wise as the 1976-'94 canon. So we're lucky even to now have that.

Does the record company have to request for certification, how does the process work?

Posted by: ben08 2nd May 2024, 11:10 AM

No, not now. It is automatic. Sales come from the OCC.

Posted by: -Jay- 2nd May 2024, 01:16 PM

Automatic since 22nd July 2013!

Kind of messy before then, with labels having to request it, and shipped physicals meaning that albums/songs could get certification levels above what it had actually sold.

I feel like I've heard 'Home' so many times on the chart show that I know it inside out, I've never heard it anywhere else and it's only now been certified silver!
