20 years have passed since Madonna released her ballads collection Something to Remember. Madonna usually excels in giving a raw vocal performance that's rich in pain and emotion, but which is the best from this selection of some of the best? Usual rules apply, one 11, one -1, half marks accepted. Deadline is Monday 2nd November and I promise I'll stay on top of the results this time (maybe). xx | I Want You (with Massive Attack) xx | I'll Remember xx | Take a Bow xx | You'll See xx | Crazy for You xx | This Used to Be My Playground xx | Live to Tell xx | Love Don't Live Here Anymore xx | Something to Remember xx | Forbidden Love xx | One More Chance xx | Rain xx | Oh Father xx | I Want You [Orchestral] (with Massive Attack) |

God, she really did know how to EMOTE back in the day, even pretty basic balladry like Love Don't Live Here is transformed into a fantastic track with her brittle, vulnerable vocals. I also think this era was probably her peak looks wise. Classy and beautiful yet still sexual and vital. She looks incredible in the video for You'll See. |

Definitely, anyone who assumes Madonna can't sing should nip down to the charity shop and grab this album. A "technically imperfect" voice usually holds much more pain and vulnerability than a "technically perfect" one.
I agree that she looked impeccably gorgeous in the mid-90s - hello 'Take a Bow' video. |

07 | I'll Remember 08 | Take a Bow 07 | You'll See 08 | Crazy for You 07 | This Used to Be My Playground 09 | Live to Tell 09 | Love Don't Live Here Anymore 06 | Something to Remember 09 | Forbidden Love 05 | One More Chance 11 | Rain 10 | Oh Father 06 | I Want You [Orchestral] (with Massive Attack) ^ they all had one score higher, but my love for 'Rain' is so much so that i had to demote everything down a point just to have some sort of perspective for the gap between them! What a beautiful collection though |

14 // Something to Remember // 69.5 pts. ~ We weren't meant to be, at least not in this lifetime ~ Highest Points: 8 (liamk97, Qween, Acidburn), 7.5 (Nick F1) Lowest Points: 6 (vibe, Joe., mr_pmt, HausofKubrick), 7 (Regina, Aaliyah4Eva) The standard of this album is incredibly high but it still doesn't feel right seeing the title track at the very bottom. This originally appeared on the soundtrack I'm Breathless and is said to deal with her failed marriage to Sean Penn, which can definitely be understood when you pay attention to the bittersweet lyrics. There's great sadness in Madonna's gentle voice as she sings of her mistakes and of how it was a case of right place at the wrong time, yet she sees the positive in this heartache and expresses how Sean taught her to love herself; something "no other man said". I think I too underrated this song because the subject matter is so touching and the production, particularly the piano outro, is just so soothing and exactly what makes this album great. 13 // One More Chance // 71 pts.
~ I was a fool, but now I understand ~ Highest Points: 9 (Regina), 8 (liamk97, Qween) Lowest Points: 5 (HausofKubrick), 6 (Acidburn) One of her worst selling and arguably least remembered single, but that shouldn't deny the beauty of this song. Specifically recorded for this album, Madonna joined forces with David Foster for 'One More Chance' (producer for the likes of Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion) and took advantage of the vocal lessons she had been taking in preparation of Evita as she angelically sings over an acoustic guitar melody that had traces of the Spanish-inspirations practiced in 'La Isla Bonita' and 'Who's That Girl' etc. Lyrically, Madonna expresses her vulnerable side again as she begs for a lover's forgiveness, a contrast to the willingness to accept the end of a relationship that's present in the song above. |

It's a great album, so even those are the bottom are good songs. I'd say they are fairly placed, though my personal dislike for Take A Bow would have seen it bottom.
