You keep saying this but I'm not seeing any evidence of poor exposure. Radios did not stop playing "normal" music. Capital and Radio 1 kept current hits on rotation. The public just weren't as interested. What can be done? It's not the fault of the OCC allowing Christmas songs into the chart, and removing them from the chart won't help album sales. It's a moot point. |

I do think that a lot of the songs in Top 40 though are just there from being on a playlist rather than actually being individually requested. I know I've seen some discussions re this before but really think they need to differentiate between passive playlist streams and active streams. |

Spice girls 2 become 1, East 17 Stay another day, Brenda Lee, all wrack up by far their biggest radio/tv airplay and streams in December. If songs like that (and I love 2 become 1) are getting extra airplay, streaming, TV play then of course that has a knock on effect of reducing the exposure of any new song. There are only so many hours of radio play, space on big streaming playlists and if Christmas songs are taking up a massive chunk of this then you know that is impacting other songs negatively. I can't be bothered to check the radio and TV airplay charts but I'm sure it is littered with Christmas songs. Now if those songs weren't in the charts I'm sure that radio and TV play would be reduced and artists/labels would feel more confident to release in December. In my mind it's not even debatable that the takeover of Christmas songs negatively effects all other aspects of music. |

NMF was basically redundant for a lot of December and now December is over Little Mix label are obviously sending those checks again looking at their sudden rise again on playlists. Mariah and Wham were still loved in 1998 when the Spice Girls were battling for Christmas number 1 they just weren't in the charts and thus dominating airplay and artistswallow were pushing hard then to sell in December. |

So it seems the government’s attempts to cancel Christmas weren’t quite enough so Sammy01 is on the case to get Christmas songs banned from TV and radio! One pleasure we had this year. Of course! If we couldn’t hear them on the radio we’d definitely completely forget about them and certainly never search them out to stream.

But people just want to stream Christmas music, there's nothing wrong with that! People are actively listening to old hits regardless but only Christmas hits are listened by everyone for a certain time every year. And that time is not very long anyway. There are 11 months to get hits outside the holiday season.

It's not the fault of Christmas songs at all. The way streaming works makes it difficult for the Christmas #1 battle to be anything other than a charity song, or a Christmas song, or whatever happens to be the current biggest hit. A held-back release by a big new artist wouldn't impact much not because of Christmas songs, but because that isn't how the chart works for the most part. At the end of the day, Christmas songs aren't going anywhere from radio stations or TV channels during December, because it's what people WANT to hear! Removing them from the chart won't change that at all. |
