Which did you prefer?
Applause for me. While I do like Perfect Illusion, I find that I very rarely come back to it tbh
So when Applause came out I hated it but it really grew on my over time and now I think it's a great song.
When Perfect Illusion came out I loved it, thought it was the best thing she had released since Born This Way era, but over time I grown to like it less and less. I still think it's OK but it's not a patch on her other stuff...
So Applause for me.
Applause by far.
I don't mind PI in context of the album, but as a single... nah thanks.
Perfect Illusion for me! It's bold, in your face and unique. Plus it sounds incredible on the album.
In fact, I'd probably rank any of her singles above Applause, which is weak, forgettable and watered down. We don't stan ~
Applause by far.
Neither are Gaga at the top of her game but I'd go for Perfect Illusion because I find it a more interesting listen
Applause
Neither were the optimal lead single, were they?
I really like both.
But I listen to Applause more.
Perfect Illusion I love but not as an album lead single it should’ve just been left as an album track.
Applause
But I don’t see any of them as strong leads tbh, both polarising in a bad way and not exactly songs people go back to. Applause grew on me over time (thanks GTAV) but Perfect Illusion was just a mess from the beginning
'Perfect Illusion' is a much better song than 'Applause'.
I prefer Perfect Illusion!
I consider Applause to be Gaga on autopilot. I enjoyed it enough at the time of its release, but that was probably driven by it being her new song and that in itself being exciting, it felt like she'd been away for a long time. But when the dust settled... it's just ok. Gaga is more than just ok, and there were better songs on the album to kick off the album campaign in a more exciting way.
Perfect Illusion is a far more interesting song! Clearly not what the public and some fans were after, but I really liked it & I still find it to be an exhilarating listen. I love how the song builds and builds as it goes along, it's so frantic!
Perfect Illusion by a mile. I never warmed to Applause. One of my least fave singles by her.
I actually prefer Perfection Illusion oops. She had NO business releasing Applause instead of Gypsy.
Perfect Illusion is the better track for me. It was more interesting as a lead and, whilst it wasn't to everyone's taste, it showed a different side to her music. Applause is just so basic in retrospect, maybe 4th single worthy given the album it came from but definitely not memorable enough to be a lead - in fact I can't actually remember how it goes now.
I’m happy Applause is leading didn’t expect it to be.
I’ve always really liked it. It gets a hard time on here and even on fan sites tbh but it’s a definite BOP.
Applause.
'Applause'! Both of them were personal chart #1s for me but 'Perfection Illusion' peaked very early in my affections.
'Applause' for me. When I first listened to it, I honestly thought wtf, is that it? lmao. But sometime after that it just became this exhilarating listen. It does kinda feel like a sort of tongue-in-cheek moment though. And of course I must not forget it inspired that parody of Gaga that had me rolling on the floor for days. I can't really remember it now, it was probably really stupid but yeah.
'Perfect Illusion' never really connected or came together for me I'm afraid.
I love Applause but I definitely take the point that it's basically Gaga on autopilot
Imagine falling out of favour slightly with the hetties and choosing Applause with those verses and that video.
Gypsy was right there. It sounded like one of those songs that wouldn't have left the radio at the time, and it was so basic and anthemic that it was screaming to be used on an X-Factor montage every week. A hit~
I do prefer Perfect Illusion, but you can tell it was one of the last songs to be made for Joanne.
I feel like they should have gone with A-YO and a really hammy video. It probably wouldn't have been a hit — but catchy enough and represents the album more than Perfect Illusion did.
