The UK’s biggest song of 2020 is The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights, the Official Charts Company can confirm.

The Canadian singer-songwriter’s mega hit racked up 2.2 million chart sales to top the end-of-year chart, made up of 195,000 downloads and 250 million streams. Blinding Lights spent eight weeks at Number 1 between February and April and features on his fourth studio album After Hours, which topped the Official Albums Chart last March.

Meanwhile, the UK’s biggest song released in 2020 goes to Head & Heart by Joel Corry ft. MNEK. The track – which ranks fifth in the overall end-of-year chart - scored six weeks at Number 1 between July and September, racking up 1.22 million chart sales in 2020, including 149 million streams. Corry’s previous single, the Number 4-peaking Lonely, places 14th.

The news comes as music industry body the BPI revealed in its end-of-year report that streaming continued to surge in 2020 as fans turned to music in a difficult year, with streaming now accounting for 81% of UK music consumption.

139 billion audio streams were recorded in the UK in 2020 – up by over a fifth (22%) compared to 2019 – with nearly 200 artists being streamed over 100 million times. The Top 10 of those all saw their streams top half a billion across the year.

At Number 2 on the end-of-year chart is Tones & I's Dance Monkey which, despite first hitting the Official Chart in August 2019, continued to prove a powerhouse throughout 2020, logging 34 weeks inside the Top 40 across the year. Its 2020 chart sales were 1.6 million, while its total figure tops 2.7 million.

Dua Lipa’s hugely successful 2020 is represented with two entries in the end-of-year Top 40 singles: Don’t Start Now at 6 and Physical at 19.

Other artists with multiple entries in the Top 40 are Lewis Capaldi with Before You Go (4), Someone You Loved (8), Bruises (24); Harry Styles with summer smash Watermelon Sugar (10), Adore You (16), and Falling (34); and British newcomer Nathan Dawe with Flowers ft. Jaykae (33) and Lighter ft. KSI (40).

2020’s Big Number 1s
Other chart-toppers from 2020 that feature in the end-of-year chart are DaBaby’s Rockstar ft. Roddy Ricch (7) – a six-week chart-topper and the UK’s Official Song of the Summer 2020 - and Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat) by 17-year-old New Zealand producer Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo (11).

Elsewhere, Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande’s one-week Number 1 Rain On Me is at 17, 24kGoldn’s Mood ft. Iann Dior finishes in 20th place, Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion’s September chart-topper WAP is at 23, Drake’s Toosie Slide places at 25, and Eminem’s Godzilla ft. Juice Wrld is 27th.

Big breakthrough hits
Elsewhere, a handful artists who made their UK Top 40 debut in 2020 also feature, including Breaking Me by Topic ft. A7S at 15, a Number 3 hit in July, and Rover by Zimbabwean-born British rapper S1mba ft. DTG, a Top 5 hit in June, at 18.

Powfu’s Deathbead ft. Beabadoobee is at 21, Roxanne by US rapper/singer Arizona Zervas (31), This City by Australian musician Sam Fischer (35), and Blueberry Faygo by US rapper Lil Mosey (39).

Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish was the UK’s biggest album for a second year in a row, Official Charts Company data confirms.

Despite a record 43 albums topping the Official Albums Chart across the year, the Scottish musician continued to dominate with his debut collection.

Capaldi’s 2019 debut topped 1 million chart sales in the UK in September, including 456,000 from 2020. The album, which logged 10 weeks at Number 1 – including four in 2020 – racked up an unbroken 77-week run in the Top 10, a record by a solo artist.

The news comes as music industry body the BPI revealed in its end-of-year report that music consumption rose for a sixth consecutive year, with 155 million equivalent albums being streamed or purchased in 2020 – up 8.2% compared to 2019.

Physical sales also proved to be key in landing a chart-topper in 2020. In the majority of weeks (28) in 2020, physical accounted for 50% of chart charts of the Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart.

Meanwhile, Harry Styles’ second studio album Fine Line – released December 2019 – finishes as the UK’s second-biggest album of 2020 with 293,000 chart sales (363,000 in total). The record enjoyed huge success across the year, boosted by Top 5 summer smash Watermelon Sugar as well as singles Falling and Golden.

The UK’s biggest album released in 2020 is Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia (265k), ranking third place overall. Dua’s second album, which was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, logged four weeks at Number 1 across April and May.

The UK’s biggest debut album of 2020 is Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon by late US rapper Pop Smoke (222k), ranking sixth on the end-of-year chart. The collection debuted at Number 2 in July and climbed the summit 12 weeks later to become the first chart-topping debut record of the year and the first ever posthumous Number 1 debut album by a solo artist.

Big 2020 Number 1s
Other big chart-topping albums released in 2020 on the end-of-year chart include Eminem’s Music To Be Murdered By (11) and Taylor Swift’s Folklore (12), which scored the longest run at the summit of the year at three weeks.

Meanwhile, Juice Wrld’s posthumous Number 1 album Legends Never Die places at 17, Michael Ball & Alfie Boe’s Together At Christmas finishes 18th, Lady Gaga’s Chromatica is at 22, The Weeknd’s After Hours is 23rd, AC/DC’s November chart-topper Power Up is at 26, and Little Mix’s Confetti’s places at 29.

Several popular greatest hits albums also feature in the year-to-date rundown, three of which are in the Top 10: Queen’s Greatest Hits at 8, Elton John’s Diamonds at 9, and Fleetwood Mac’s 50 Years – Don’t Stop at 10.

The streaming Top 40 must be unweighted, so a YouTube watch counts the same as a premium audio stream, which is why Perfect and Baby Shark are so high!

Interesting that Head & Heart climbed into the overall Top 5 in the final week and Mood into the Top 20.

This was the Top 10 albums in 2019:

01 Lewis Capaldi - Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent 640,892
02 Ed Sheeran - No 6 Collaborations Project 568,110
03 Motion Picture Cast Recording - Greatest Showman 523,844
04 Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? 369,609
05 George Ezra - Staying At Tamara's 331,949
06 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (OST) 331,244
07 Ariana Grande - thank u, next 293,232
08 Tom Walker - What A Time To Be Alive 269,551
09 Motion Picture Cast Recording (Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper) - A Star Is Born 242,418
10 Rod Stewart - You're In My Heart 236,426

I guess the Top 10 this year isn't too bad when you consider soundtrack albums credited to various artists are now excluded from the album chart and we didn't have a big name release like Lewis or Ed this year. I know this is kinda cheating but this is what the Top 10 would have looked like when you take away those factors:

04 Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? 369,609
05 George Ezra - Staying At Tamara's 331,949
06 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (OST) 331,244
07 Ariana Grande - thank u, next 293,232
08 Tom Walker - What A Time To Be Alive 269,551
10 Rod Stewart - You're In My Heart 236,426
11 Ed Sheeran - ÷ 236,327
12 Robbie Williams - The Christmas Present 225,850
13 Fleetwood Mac - 50 Years: Don't Stop 201,369
14 Coldplay - Everyday Life 195,695

Which looks much closer to this year's Top 10. Kylie at #33 sold 113k and Little Mix at #29 sold 125k, which is very close to last year (121k for #33 and 131k for #29).

I didn’t realise that album sales this Christmas were so low that Buble had failed to make his Christmas album hit 10 year in a row in the Year End top 40.

Pop Smoke claimed the UK's biggest debut album of 2020 with Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon, OfficialCharts.com can confirm.

The posthumous record by the US rapper - released in July following his death in February - heads up the Top 10 debuts of the year with 222,000 chart sales.

Shoot For Stars debuted at Number 2 and became a staple of the Top 10 for five months, eventually reaching Number 1 some 12 weeks after its release to become the first debut album to hit the summit in 2020.

Speaking at the time it hit the top, Steven Victor, head of Pop Smoke's US label, Victor Victor, described reaching Number 1 as a "bittersweet" moment, adding: "London was a special place for Pop - it was a city that he connected with and was drawn to. A place that inspired him but also gave him a sense of peace.

"The album going to Number 1 in the UK is incredibly special, but bittersweet – not only is it a reflection of his relationship with 808-Melo and so many of his U.K.-based collaborators but really encapsulates what he aspired to do – to make music that inspires and resonated all over the world."

Behind Pop Smoke, the second biggest debut album of the year was KSI’s Dissimulation, which landed at Number 2 in May after a close battle for the top spot with The 1975.

Headie One’s chart-topping Edna is third, and D-Block Europe’s debut The Blueprint – Us vs. Them – a Number 2 in October – is fourth. US singer-songwriter Lauv rounds out the Top 5 with How I'm Feeling.

The biggest debut album released by a female artist this year was Ava Max’s Heaven & Hell, a Number 2 hit in October, while other popular debut records in 2020 were Louis Tomlinson’s Walls and Amanda Holden's Songs From My Heart.
