Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of August 6, 2016: 40 39 38 37 36 35 34 33 32 Pink - Just Like Fire 1 Up 31 Alan Walker - Faded 3 Up 30 29 28 5 Seconds Of Summer - Girls Talk Boys 27 Mike Posner - I Took A Pill In Ibiza 26 Christine & The Queens - Tilted 5 Up 25 Jennifer Lopez - Ain't Your Mama 5 Up 24 Olly Murs - You Don't Know Love 5 Up 23 Gnash & Olivia O'Brien - I Hate U, I Love U 6 Down 22 Galantis - No Money 2 Down 21 Dua Lipa - Hotter Than Hell 5 Down 20 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own 16 Down 19 Ariana Grande - Into You 18 Adele - Send My Love 5 Down 17 16 MØ - Final Song 10 Up 15 14 Sia - Cheap Thrills 3 Down 13 Bastille - Good Grief 11 Up 12 Kent Jones - Don't Mind 2 Up 11 Enrique Iglesias - Duele El Corazon 10 Clean Bandit - Tears 9 8 7 6 Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better 4 Up 5 4 Jonas Blue - Perfect Strangers 1 Down 3 The Chainsmokers & Daya - Don't Let Me Down 1 Down 2 1 Calvin Harris & Rihanna - This Is What You Came For 5 Up "This Is What You Came For" makes a sudden jump from number 6 to number 1 and becomes Calvin Harris's latest chart-topper. The previous one was "How Deep Is Your Love" last year... And anything I say about Rihanna won't be enough! She has already reached the top in 2016 with "Work" and now I'm completely certain that she's the artist with the most number ones in the history of MTV Europe's European chart! However, I think the most important thing in this edition of the chart was that MTV Europe played "Duele El Corazon" by Enrique Iglesias! It's amazing to see a song in Spanish broadcast on MTV Europe... In fact, in 2015 Enrique's "El Perdon" did appear in the chart (as evidenced by MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20"), MTV Europe just skipped it the whole time! On the other hand, "Bailando" didn't chart in 2014 - how that happened remains a mystery to me... |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of August 13, 2016: 40 39 38 37 36 35 34 33 32 Alan Walker - Faded 1 Down 31 30 Tinie Tempah - Mamacita 29 Dua Lipa - Hotter Than Hell 8 Down 28 27 26 25 Anne-Marie - Alarm 24 Gnash & Olivia O'Brien - I Hate U, I Love U 1 Down 23 Olly Murs - You Don't Know Love 1 Up 22 21 Jennifer Lopez - Ain't Your Mama 4 Up 20 Christine & The Queens - Tilted 6 Up 19 Ariana Grande - Into You Stay => 18 Clean Bandit - Tears 8 Down 17 MØ - Final Song 1 Down 16 15 Kent Jones - Don't Mind 3 Down 14 Adele - Send My Love 4 Up 13 Enrique Iglesias - Duele El Corazon 2 Down 12 Sia - Cheap Thrills 2 Up 11 10 9 Bastille - Good Grief 4 Up 8 Calvin Harris & Rihanna - This Is What You Came For 7 Down 7 Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop The Feeling! 6 The Chainsmokers & Daya - Don't Let Me Down 3 Down 5 Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better 1 Up 4 Jonas Blue - Perfect Strangers Stay => 3 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own 17 Up 2 1 Kungs & Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl There are a couple of peculiar reverse movements in this edition of the chart. After making a 6-1 jump to the top, now "This Is What You Came For" by Calvin Harris and Rihanna falls 1-8... Even more strikingly, after "Dancing On My Own" by Calum Scott made a 16-place fall from number 4 to number 20, now it overcompensates, making a 17-place climb from number 20 to number 3!!! Otherwise, it's great to see Christine and The Queens in MTV Europe's "Euro Top Chart" - although this is not the French version of the song "Christine" but the English version "Tilted", it still contains French lyrics! |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of August 27, 2016: 40 39 38 37 36 35 34 33 32 31 Galantis - No Money 5 Down 30 Alan Walker - Sing Me To Sleep 29 28 Jennifer Lopez - Ain't Your Mama 27 Anne-Marie - Alarm Stay => 26 Ariana Grande - Into You 1 Down 25 Clean Bandit - Tears 2 Down 24 23 Gnash & Olivia O'Brien - I Hate U, I Love U 2 Down 22 21 Sia - Cheap Thrills 5 Down 20 19 18 Enrique Iglesias - Duele El Corazon 1 Down 17 Kent Jones - Don't Mind 2 Down 16 MØ - Final Song 6 Down 15 Charlie Puth & Selena Gomez - We Don't Talk Anymore 14 Christine & The Queens - Tilted Stay => 13 Olly Murs - You Don't Know Love 17 Up 12 Calvin Harris & Rihanna - This Is What You Came For Stay => 11 Bastille - Good Grief 4 Down 10 Twenty One Pilots - Heathens 1 Up 9 Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop The Feeling! 8 7 The Chainsmokers & Daya - Don't Let Me Down 3 Down 6 Jonas Blue - Perfect Strangers 2 Up 5 4 Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better 3 Down 3 Kungs & Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl Stay => 2 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own 4 Up 1 DJ Snake & Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You It's really remarkable that MTV Europe played "Let Me Love You" by DJ Snake and Justin Bieber! This shows that they're willing to play a song that has reached number 1, even if it doesn't have an official video (yet). So what did MTV Europe actually play? It was some mix of Justin Bieber videos (mostly from "I'll Show You", I think)... and it was certainly something unofficial! |

And by climbing to number 2 with "Heathens", Twenty One Pilots improve on the peak position of "Stressed Out", which reached number 3 earlier this year. |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of September 17, 2016: 40 39 38 37 36 35 34 Disturbed - The Sound Of Silence 9 Down 33 32 Matoma - False Alarm 31 MØ - Final Song 7 Down 30 Jennifer Lopez - Ain't Your Mama 29 28 27 Anne-Marie - Alarm 26 25 Christine & The Queens - Tilted 5 Down 24 Martin Garrix & Bebe Rexha - In The Name Of Love 5 Up 23 22 Enrique Iglesias - Duele El Corazon 8 Down 21 Calvin Harris & Rihanna - This Is What You Came For 6 Down 20 Tieks - Sunshine 4 Down 19 Mike Perry - The Ocean 2 Up 18 Shawn Mendes - Treat You Better 6 Down 17 16 Ariana Grande - Side To Side 15 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human 12 Up 14 Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop The Feeling! 1 Down 13 Olly Murs - You Don't Know Love 4 Up 12 Kungs & Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl 5 Down 11 10 9 8 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own Stay => 7 Twenty One Pilots - Heathens 5 Down 6 5 The Chainsmokers & Halsey - Closer 2 Down 4 Lil' Wayne, Wiz Khalifa & Imagine Dragons - Sucker For Pain 3 Charlie Puth & Selena Gomez - We Don't Talk Anymore 3 Up 2 1 DJ Snake & Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You Stay => I guess I should have been ALARMed by the existence of two ALARMing songs in this edition of the chart - "False Alarm" by Matoma and "Alarm" by Anne-Marie... It was an omen that something strange would happen again! MTV Europe played "Side To Side" by Ariana Grande and showed it as number 16; THEN they played "Can't Stop The Feeling!" by Justin Timberlake and showed it as number 14; and AFTER THAT they played "Human" by Rag'n'Bone Man and showed it as number 15! Judging by the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", what matters is the position shown, not the order in which MTV Europe played the songs... |

Here is the chart of October 8, 2016: 40 39 38 37 Martin Garrix & Bebe Rexha - In The Name Of Love 18 Down 36 35 34 Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop The Feeling! 14 Down 33 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own 27 Down 32 31 Calvin Harris & Rihanna - This Is What You Came For 2 Down 30 DJ Snake & Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You 26 Down 29 The Chainsmokers & Halsey - Closer 27 Down 28 Ariana Grande - Side To Side 21 Down 27 Sia - The Greatest 26 Down 26 25 24 Charlie Puth & Selena Gomez - We Don't Talk Anymore 8 Down 23 22 Clean Bandit - Tears 21 20 Tieks - Sunshine 15 Up 19 Christine & The Queens - Tilted 18 17 Kungs & Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl 2 Down 16 Adele - Send My Love 15 Dua Lipa - Mwah 14 13 Bastille - Good Grief 11 Up 12 MØ - Final Song 22 Up 11 Anne-Marie - Alarm 25 Up 10 9 8 7 Offaiah - Trouble 6 Olly Murs - You Don't Know Love 5 Up 5 4 Ellie Goulding - Still Falling For You 8 Up 3 Jonas Blue - Perfect Strangers 2 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human 6 Up 1 James Arthur - Say You Won't Let Go This must be the craziest edition of the chart (at least this "new" version which has been broadcast on MTV Europe since January 2014)! It's really a yo-yo - ENORMOUS climbs and falls... including probably the biggest fall from number 2 ever (27 places down to number 29) and probably the biggest fall from number 1 ever (26 places down to number 27)!... |

Here is the chart of October 15, 2016: 40 39 38 37 36 35 34 33 32 31 30 29 28 Offaiah - Trouble 21 Down 27 Dua Lipa - Mwah 12 Down 26 Craig David & Sigala - Ain't Giving Up 25 Charlie Puth & Selena Gomez - We Don't Talk Anymore 1 Down 24 Anne-Marie - Alarm 13 Down 23 Mike Perry - The Ocean 22 Olly Murs - You Don't Know Love 16 Down 21 20 19 Zara Larsson - Ain't My Fault 18 Major Lazer, Justin Bieber & MØ - Cold Water 17 Lil' Wayne, Wiz Khalifa & Imagine Dragons - Sucker For Pain 16 Jonas Blue - Perfect Strangers 13 Down 15 Disturbed - The Sound Of Silence 14 13 Sia - The Greatest 14 Up 12 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own 21 Up 11 Ariana Grande - Side To Side 17 Up 10 DJ Snake & Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You 20 Up 9 Twenty One Pilots - Heathens 8 7 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human 5 Down 6 Ellie Goulding - Still Falling For You 2 Down 5 Niall Horan - This Town 4 3 James Arthur - Say You Won't Let Go 2 Down 2 The Chainsmokers & Halsey - Closer 27 Up 1 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - Starboy Just like I expected, a "reverse yo-yo" has happened! This edition's big climbers are the previous edition's big fallers and vice versa! The most drastic example is the movement of "Closer" by The Chainsmokers and Halsey during the last 3 editions of the chart: 2-29-2!!! It's nice that MTV Europe have finally started playing "Cold Water" by Major Lazer, Justin Bieber and MØ! They had been skipping it week after week while it was near the top of the chart... Of course, in the beginning the reason for this was that the song didn't have a video yet - but the video was released a month ago... And we have a new number 1! "Starboy" becomes The Weekend's third chart-topper after "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills". The situation with Daft Punk is more complicated. The only song of theirs that reached the top of MTV Europe's European chart previously was "Around The World" in 1997. I think it's very likely that "Get Lucky" would have become number 1 in the chart... if it had existed at the time! Alas, no European chart was broadcast on MTV Europe during 2013... |

The last time the original Beatles appeared in MTV Europe's European chart was at the beginning of 1996 (20 years ago!), when they reached number 3 with "Free As A Bird". Of course, one of the Beatles - Paul McCartney - scored a chart-topper last year, technically as a "solo" artist and in reality - alongside Rihanna and Kanye West with "FourFiveSeconds"! And since I mentioned 1996... Mark Morrison reached number 3 then with "Return Of The Mack"... and now, 20 years later, reappears in the chart with a new version of that song - "The Mack", a collaboration with Nevada and Fetty Wap. |
