BUZZJACK'S ULTIMATE UK NUMBER ONE SINGLE



The quest to find Buzzjack's favourite UK number 1 single starts here. This hasn't been done since 2012 when the winner was 'Wuthering Heights' by Kate Bush. The rest of the top five was made up by 'Toxic','Somebody That I Used To Know'.'Titanium' and 'Bad Romance'. As many of us were not around six years ago,the results this time could be completely different.

I am firstly asking you to choose your favourite 30 number 1 singles and put them in order with 30 points for your favourite down to 1 point for your least favourite. The 200 singles with the most points will advance to the semi-finals. There will be four semis of 50 songs each. The top 25 from each semi-final will go through to the final rate where you will give a score to each of the 100 singles and the one with the highest average will be the winner.

So for now,please list your top 30. You can edit your lists at any time if you see a song on someone else's list that you forgot about. I won't start counting up the points until the closing date has passed. You have 16 days to vote. You can see a list of number 1 singles here:

Can I just say this is a fantastic idea, but for me I won't be able to compile there are so many I truly love especially from the 80s era that I grew up with, it be literally hard for me to compile... Soft Cell, Duran Duran, Human League, The Police, David Bowie, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Blondie and not forgetting All Saints.

Just pick the ones you like the best. This is only the first round,to get the number of songs down to a more manageable 200. A song you can't fit in might well be picked by someone else and still qualify.

What do 'Video Killed The Radio Star' and 'Firestarter' have in common? They were both co-written by Trevor Horn. He and the rest of the Art Of Noise managed to get co-writing credits on 'Firestarter' after it used a sample from their song Close (To The Edit). The Kinks virtually invented both the guitar riff and punk rock in 1964 with 'You Really Got Me'. I thought 'Summer Nights' might get more than just 4 points. I haven't heard 'Welcome Home' for a long time,not in full anyway. I know the chorus is used in an ad. I'm glad someone voted for it. For a while in the 70s,you couldn't escape Peters And Lee. They were regulars on every light entertainment show,rather like George Ezra recently. It was always a job to hear Dianne Lee singing,she was always drowned out by Lennie Peters' big voice and was never given any solo lines to sing.

Is this the biggest surprise so far? 'Look What You Made Me Do' was only given 9 points and 2 points by the voters. None of Robbie Williams solo no.1s received votes but his duet with Nicole Kidman gets 11 points. It's good to see Mary Hopkin's update of a old Russian song here but the best on this list is clearly Procul Harum's classic 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'.

If I'm not mistaken, 162 out of 401 singles are already out. It looks like 22 or 23 points were necessary to go through to the next round. I was guessing 18 or 19 points, but I've been proven wrong.

The cut off point has been reached!

The songs with 23 points or more have all qualified for the semi-finals. There are 202 of them. Even if I used tie-breaks,I can't get it down to a round 200. Every voter's top 8 songs are through,even if no one else voted for them.

However,there were two people who voted four days after the closing date. I didn't want their efforts to be a complete waste of time so I have decided to give a wildcard to one song from each of their lists,the non qualifier with the highest amount of points if their points were added on. In the case of Jester,it's 'Paradise' by Coldplay which would have moved up from 19 points to 48. In the case of Spiceboy,it's 'I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)' by George Michael and Aretha Franklin which would have moved up from 13 points to 37.

There will therefore be 204 songs in the semi-finals with 51 in each one. I will make the draw and start the first semi-final early next week.
