Here's the list!

Alfie Templeman
Berwyn
Bree Runway
Dutchavelli
Girl In Red
Greentea Peng
Griff
Holly Humberstone
Pa Salieu
The Lathums

I reckon Alfie's got this with his TOTP slot, Dutchavelli seems a strange choice as he's done well already - and has had numerous allegations on twitter recently.

My choice would be The Lathums though! They could get a #1 with their debut album on a quieter week next year.

Alfie, Bree, Griff and Girl In Red my faves

Posted by: M4ngo Ho Ho Dec 7 2020, 12:32 PM

Alfie's the one I know best from that list and I've liked a lot of what I've heard from him so I'm rooting for him.

Posted by: Klumpus Dec 7 2020, 12:42 PM

My guess would be Bree Runway and girl in red are the two front-runners. They seem like the biggest names so far and R1 has supported both. I reckon Alfie Templemen and Dutchavelli will be top 5 too.

Posted by: Bjork Dec 7 2020, 01:04 PM

rooting for Girl in Red
also like Holly Humberstone but she's too low key to win this

Dutchavelli sounds like an odd inclusion, he's got a bunch of hits already, even a top 10 album

Posted by: AcerBen Dec 7 2020, 03:13 PM

Dua Lipa, Mabel, Lewis Capaldi, Billie Eilish, Tom Walker, Dermot Kennedy.. all longlisted in recent years and none made the top 5. And all more successful than any recent winners.

Yeah it doesn't have much influence really other than some press for a month laugh.gif

Bet they wish Octavian didn't get it in 2019 now!

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat Dec 7 2020, 04:02 PM

Dutchavelli is I think the only one I've not heard anything by.

Rooting for Berwyn tbh, Glory is exceptional and his performance of on Jools was incredible heart.gif

Posted by: JackTheeStallion Dec 7 2020, 04:45 PM

Bree Runway deserves the world, would love to see her properly smash next year wub.gif

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey Dec 7 2020, 04:50 PM

Bree Runway has been around for a while now, she definitely deserves mainstream success! 'Little Nokia' is my fave of hers

Posted by: Michael Bubré Dec 7 2020, 08:11 PM

Definitely curious timing for them to put Dutchavelli on this list, I assume it must have been finalised at least a few weeks ago...

Hoping for Alfie to win here but it is a pretty decent list overall I think - I'm yet to hear a song that I really love from any of the others (well, apart from Dutchavelli, but I'm not gonna be rooting for him here for various reasons lol) but I'd say most of them have the potential to deliver stuff I can get into more next year, particularly BERWYN, Bree Runway and Pa Salieu (and maybe girl in red, I wasn't a fan at all of the first few songs I heard from her but she's markedly improved already with her last couple of releases). The only act on there that I've heard nothing from is The Lathums.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 Dec 7 2020, 08:30 PM

Always find this list quite stale nowadays. Lots of the artists are fairly well known!

Posted by: Michael Bubré Dec 7 2020, 09:07 PM

The point of the list isn't to be a bunch of artists that no one has heard of, it's artists who are already rising and have the potential to make a bigger breakthrough within the year. I'd say the only name that doesn't fit that description this year is Dutchavelli.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 Dec 7 2020, 09:21 PM

It basically leads to radio 1 A Listing some of them throughout the year!

Posted by: SantaTurret32 Dec 13 2020, 12:37 AM

My Top 5 from this list: Greentea Peng, Alfie Templeman, girl in red, Bree Runway, Holly Humberstone

Posted by: lewistgreen Dec 13 2020, 09:48 AM

It's Griff or Holly for me. Seems like a very "short" longlist this year

Posted by: Sour Candy Dec 13 2020, 11:38 AM

Holly Humberstone is my fave out of these.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 Dec 13 2020, 12:12 PM

Have been enjoying Griff for the past 18 months or so!

FILTH.

Will the debut album be called 'Derails de Griff' ?

Posted by: Christmasteve201 Dec 13 2020, 03:49 PM

😅 On then!!

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey Jan 3 2021, 09:24 AM

Griff is fifth

And an article on how last year's top 5 have fared in 2020, I'd say Yungblud has been the most successful out of them!

Posted by: Bjork Jan 3 2021, 09:54 AM

never ever heard of this Joy Crookes that was #4 last year

Sounds like Covid properly pushed back her career, which is a shame.

Posted by: Santa Klaus Jan 3 2021, 10:44 AM

Say It Again was one of my favourite songs of last year wub.gif

Posted by: Boymetworld91 Jan 3 2021, 11:57 AM

Celeste with Stop This Flame (used on the Sky Sports football coverage which is a big coup) and A Little Love has had a decent debut year, Yungblud made impact beyond just the music and beabadoobee had the massive success of Death Bed. Excited to see what this years nominees can achieve.

I'd say her debut album going top 10 was the big achievement for beabadoobee last year - death bed feels very distant from her own music.

“Anyone But Me” is worth checking out! Looks like the pandemic has derailed her career somewhat. : (

2004 was definitely a vintage year for Sound of... - Keane won it, Franz Ferdinand, Joss Stone, Wiley, Razorlight, McFly, Scissor Sisters and Ordinary Boys all made the longlist. Ten years on 2014 was also pretty prophetic: Sam Smith, Ella Eyre, Chance the Rapper, George Ezra, FKA Twigs and MNEK the most successful out of that year's lineup.

I did listen to her album and you are right it is a departure.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat Jan 3 2021, 12:25 PM

Joy Crookes is excellent, hopefully she'll release more in 2021. She has a few songs I've listened to quite a lot.

Easy Life had a fairly productive year and a shame they weren't able to capitalise further on a substantial live following, though I prefer their 2018-19 output than last years.

Posted by: awardinary Jan 3 2021, 12:34 PM

How certain is it that whoever wins BBC’s Sound of the year also gets the Critics Choice award at the Brits (or whatever it is called these days)?

Posted by: Bré Jan 3 2021, 12:40 PM

Well it happened 6 out of 13 times the BRIT award has existed (Adele, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Sam Smith, Jack Garratt and Celeste), so about 50/50 magic.gif Although it's a 0% chance if the Sound of... winner isn't a British artist of course lol ~ (though that has only happened twice since the BRIT award's creation, for HAIM and Sigrid).

Greentea Peng at 4. Really like what I've heard by her, released a few singles in the last 12 months which I've enjoyed so hoping she can get some further mainstream success.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jan 6 2021, 07:25 AM

BERWYN is at #3
Holly Humberstone is at #2

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jan 6 2021, 07:52 AM

I'd guess Alfie is #1 then

Posted by: Bjork Jan 6 2021, 08:15 AM

yes was thinking the same

I really like Holly Humberstone so glad she's #2

Posted by: Dan17F1 Jan 6 2021, 12:38 PM

Yeah I think Alfie is definitely number 1 too. The only ones I’m surprised aren’t on there are Pa Salieu and Girl in Red. Thought they’d both be in the top 5!

Posted by: Bré Jan 6 2021, 04:03 PM

Happy to see BERWYN up there, I listened to 'VINYL' again the other day and it's really growing on me, he has a ton of potential.

Holly Humberstone... exists ~

I am here for the predictable Alfie win cool.gif

Posted by: SLlewellyn Jan 6 2021, 08:40 PM

Called Alfie as the overall winner as soon as the list was announced. I will be SHOCKED if they go with someone else - he’s exactly what BBC Radio 1 love and will no doubt have a successful 2021 going by the quality of the music and the support so far

Posted by: SantaTurret32 Jan 6 2021, 11:31 PM

The Sound Of award may subvert our expectations. I remember back in 2016 when I was expecting Rag N Bone Man to win the Sound Of 2017.

Posted by: Dan17F1 Jan 7 2021, 12:37 AM

Very unexpectedly Pa Salieu has won it! Very happy for him, even if I’m a bit disappointed for Alfie. Energy with Mahalia is such a good song in my opinion!

Posted by: troylovesmusic Jan 7 2021, 12:41 AM

I wanted Bree Runway to win but still not winning doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world hoping she still breaks through big this year loved her music for a while now ! wub.gif

Posted by: Bré Jan 7 2021, 12:48 AM

Oh, well that's rather shocking that Alfie isn't even in the top 5! Though having said that I would have been at least somewhat surprised at Pa Salieu missing the top 5 too. Still a good winner, have enjoyed what I have heard from Pa so far.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jan 7 2021, 12:57 AM

Woah wasn't expecting that!

I don't mind Pa Salieu from the little I've heard, not sure how successful he'll be in the mainstream though

Posted by: Road Salt Mixer Jan 7 2021, 04:00 PM

Pa Salieu's songs sound quite catchy from the clips they played of them during the BBC News piece about his win of Sound of 2021.

QUOTE

I think he will be more successful as a singles chart artist than Celeste who won last year, who is more of an albums chart artist with her retro jazz and soul sound.

Posted by: SantaTurret32 Jan 7 2021, 07:01 PM

I guessed that (him and Alfie)

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Apr 1 2021, 09:40 PM

Pa Salieu has been charged with wounding with intent, violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon in relation to a murder in 2018...

Posted by: Mangø Apr 1 2021, 10:44 PM

Oops, that's slightly embarrassing for the BBC...

Posted by: Dan17F1 Apr 1 2021, 11:15 PM

That’s not great! Can’t imagine we’ll be hearing anymore of him for a while - at least on BBC radio stations.
