The Police doing the biz, the album release will hit sales next week - Zenyatta like all Police studio albums sells well. My Old Piano is a great Chic track, way better than the following single, and Amigo was great - sadly forgotten these days, but cool reggae for me.

11TH OCTOBER

"Zenyatta Mondatta" duly debuts at No 1 today and naturally takes some sales away from "Don't Stand So Close To Me" which still holds the top position on a very healthy sale of 121,000 taking the songs 21 day tally to 442,000 and has all the landmarks of a stellar seller- It is already the 14th biggest selling single of the year and could perhaps jump into the top 5 next week. Talking of the YTD tallies Kelly Marie has now sold over 600,000 copies and tops that list though perhaps not for long as it drops to No 12 this week.

There are four climbers from within the top 10 this week with Ottawan's "D.I.S.C.O" climbing a place and shifting 89,000 copies in doing so, that tally is actually down from last week and it may have problems hanging round long enough to depose The Police. Madness also share in the current healthy market with a rise of a place 4-3 though again its sales deflate to 73,000, the parent album "Absolutely" climbs 7-2 on the album charts and doubtless prevented a serious challenge on the No 1 single from them this week. Diana Ross also climbs a spot 6-5 (49,000) as well as a solitary place climb for Black Slate 10-9 (40,000).

Three new hits to cover this week starting with the Specials who score a fourth consecutive top 10 hit as "Stereotype/ International Jet Set" sprints 25-6 (44,000). It's the lead single from their second album "More Specials" which this week makes the top 5, two places than their debut set made earlier this year.

Following up the July No 1 single "Use It Up, Wear It out" Odyssey return with the ballad "If You're Looking For A Way Out" and find themselves back in the top 10 as it climbs 20-7 (43,000)

It's doubtless the most controversial song in the top 40 at the moment (if not the year) but Thin Lizzy rise 18-10 (38,000) with "Killer On The Loose". Lynott takes on the persona of Jack the Ripper which has considerable resonance with current events in the north of England and has created something of minor media frenzy but it has become their 4th top 10 in a seven year career.

Not mentioned already Stevie Wonder drops 2-4 (62,000) and Randy Crawford falls 5-8 (41,000)

1- DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME- The Police (121,000)
2- D.I,S,C.O- Ottawan (89,000)
3- BAGGY TROUSERS- Madness (73,000)
4- MASTERBLASTER (JAMMIN)- Stevie Wonder (62,000)
5- MY OLD PIANO- Diana Ross (49,000)
6- STEREOTYPE/ INTERNATIONAL JET SET- The Specials (44,000)
7- IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A WAY OUT- Odyssey (43,000)
8- ONE DAY I’LL FLY AWAY- Randy Crawford (41,000)
9- AMIGO- Black Slate (40,000)
10- KILLER ON THE LOOSE- Thin Lizzy (38,000)

Catching up with the last few weeks
Love the Police song, great comeback
Also love the Stevie Wonder song. I actually knew the song but never knew how it was called or that it was him singing
Similarly, I know DISCO but didn’t know it was Ottoman
Diana Ross-Old Piano also sounds familiar, but it’s just so-so for me, not her bestest

On the other hand, that Amigo song, the Odyssey ballad, The Specials, Thin Lizzy are pretty bad
With Madness-Baggy Trousers being the absolute worst

'Stereotype' is another good one from The Specials - a song which tells a story, even as the lyrics state the character "doesn't really exist". I'm less familiar with their other A-side.
