This thread is designed to highlight current dance trends in the world of music when it comes to heavily sampling or covering older songs, some from the 80's, but the majority from the 90's and early 00's eras (with one exeption from the 70's). It's happening on a larger scale in 2016 than ever before, and this is mainly down to the tropical house craze thats still not going away.
What are your thoughts to the following songs which have made some impact in the last 12 months, be that great or small;
Sigala – Easy Love [a cover of the 70's classic by The Jackson 5]
Felix Jaehn feat. Jasmine Thompson – Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better) [a cover of the 80's hit by Chaka Khan]
Joe Stone feat. Montell Jordan – The Party (This Is How We Do It) [a cover of the 90's hit by Montell Jordan]
Philip George feat. Anton Powers – Alone No More [a cover of the 90's hit by Another Level]
99 Souls feat. Destiny's Child & Brandy – The Girl Is Mine [a cover of the 00's hit Girl by Destiny's Child and the 90's hit The Boy Is Mine by Brandy & Monica]
Jonas Blue feat. Dakota – Fast Car [a cover of the 80's hit by Tracy Chapman]
Cheat Codes x Kris Kros Amsterdam – Sex [a cover of the 90's hit Let's Talk About Sex by Salt-N-Pepa]
Cheat Codes & Dante Klein – Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On) [a cover of the 00's hit by Kevin Lyttle]
Kungs vs. Cookin' On 3 Burners – This Girl [a remix of the 00's single by Cookin' On 3 Burners]
Zac Samuel & Moon Willis feat. Tayá – Never Letting Go [a cover of the 90's single Never Gonna Let You Go by Tina Moore]
Gareth Maher – Ride On Time [a cover of the 80's classic by Black Box]
John Gibbons – Would I Lie To You [a cover of the 90's reggae classic by Charles & Eddie]
Nevada feat. Mark Morrison & Fetty Wap – The Mack [a remix of the 90's hit by Mark Morrison]
There may indeed be others I omitted, but I thought of these, and as you can see there's quite a lot more than usual.
What are your thoughts? Is it a bad idea to try and redo an older classic and give it a current sound, or is it, in most cases, actually a stroke of genius?
I do like a good dance remake, some of the above songs are seriously good! (I wouldn't put 'This Girl' in there though, as the original was barely known by anyone).
If the sample is too known or familiar then that does sometimes detract from it (see the endless amount of 'Ride On Time' covers and samples) but if it puts a new spin on it then that's great ('Easy Love', 'The Girl Is Mine' and 'Sex' do this particularly well)
How could you forget Show Me Love
'Fraid so Adam! Good shout though.
IMHO one of the best old song remix.
The current ones are not as good as the 2004 to 2006 ones imo, because those were much more retro sounding and nostalgic. The only ones I like from your list are The Girl Is Mine and Would I Lie To You.
Added to the list;
Nevada feat. Mark Morrison & Fetty Wap – The Mack [a remix of the 90's hit by Mark Morrison]
Although I don't think it will chart.
I hate these, they seem so lazy and I'd rather they just made a new song I especially begrudge The Girl Is Mine, it makes me wince that people love that and don'teven know The Boy Is Mine :/
The latest song to get a tropical house infusion;
well you seem to have been proved wrong about The Mack as that's already climbing the chart
quite like this new 'Why' too, a lot better than the SoundGirl (WHOOOOO) reworking of it from 5 years ago that was a big chart flop.
Isn't Sigala's "Say You Do" also a rework of some 90's Mariah song?
I think a tropical house cover of “Playing With Knives” could really work, just replace the piano with steel drums and whack Kiesza on the vocals and BOOM instant Top 75 hit right there.
Because Carly Simon’s original (#10 in 1982) is not that well known around here, especially as it was a hit long before most people (even me!) were born.
I only know it because of Glamma Kid and even that is 1999!
1982 dates me by 15 years and I'm familiar with the original! I'd say 'Why' is fairly well known*, it sometimes gets recurrent play on radio 2 as well as her other (probably more well-known) hit 'You're So Vain'.
*not known enough to warrant a veto in BJSC though!
I'll express how I feel about them with emoticons
