Hungary

Joci Pápai - Origo

Posted by: Ryan. 25th November 2016, 09:51 PM

I think most Eurovision fans agree that Hungary's current run of success - 6 qualifications out of 6 since their 2011 comeback - is one of the most impressive of any country, particularly as they don't have any particular help from a diaspora and don't import Swedish songs. Much of this is no doubt thanks to A Dal, now one of the most popular selections outside of Scandinavia, and for 2017 they are looking to make A Dal the strongest it has ever been - acts must be experienced and have a label or manager:

https://escxtra.com/2016/10/11/hungary-submissions-open-and-rules-change-for-a-dal-2017/

Kállay Saunders Band has reportedly suggested he may be returning yet again, he is adamant that he will be the one to bring a victory to Hungary one day. Who We Are was fantastic this year, and probably would've outperformed Freddie in Stockholm in hindsight, but it all fell apart in that dramatic national final with failing earpieces and repeat performances.

The Kallay Saunders Band song is already out and it's nowhere near as good as it sounds like it thinks it is

Posted by: Ryan. 8th December 2016, 10:13 PM

Oh I love it! It's chilled yet anthemic and once again very on trend. It doesn't scream winner like Who We Are did (and it came very close), but this does seem like it requires a little less vocal range and András did slightly struggle live with Who We Are. Kállay Saunders Band are one of Hungary's top artists from what I gather and they will be guaranteed radio airplay where many other won't, hopefully it is staged well and it can become a contender.

Looking forward to hearing Gigi's latest offering and also Adám as I liked both of their previous entries!

Nice sound but I doubt they will win even national contest.

NEW KALLAY MUSIC OMG

Posted by: christmdhas 14th December 2016, 11:35 PM

Woah I am loving it wub.gif I really think something like Love In The Dark or #JOY would have been more suitable, but I'm pretty sure this'll get through to Eurovision (and rightfully so! KSB are criminally underrated)

This song is getting a fair bit of hype as a fan favourite for people who like mid noughties ethno-pop. Not got a hope in hell of winning the selection but it's still enjoyable!

The A Dal songs are all available http://www.mediaklikk.hu/a-dal-videok/ in studio form

A Dal is by far and away one of the weakest of the big NFs for me and this year is no better. Ádám Szabó's entry is trying to get into the same vibe as Freddy from last year but it isn't as good and the lyrics are pretty clunky. The best one is probably Gigi's big power ballad but even that's only about an 8/10.

Posted by: Ryan. 5th January 2017, 05:06 PM

Out of all the ones I've listened to (the biggest names and the fan hypes), Kállay Saunders Band remains by far my favourite but I accept '17' is very much a radio song as opposed to something that will win a competition whether it is A Dal or Eurovision. Ádám is probably the most winnery-sounding but that is because it is very much from the same cloth as 'Pioneer' was.

Gigi is pleasant enough, it could come alive live but at this stage I doubt it can win if 'Over You' couldn't. Totova & Freddie doesn't appeal to me much at all, screams fans getting excited just because there is *an* ethno-pop song rather than it being a *good* ethno-pop song.

Yeah I imagine Ádám is the front runner at this stage!

Listened to a fair few of them and Kallay Saunders Band is my favourite, as usual. Still wish they'd entered Love In The Dark for A Dal, though, that sounds as big as Running was.

Hungary have had all of their heats now (they got shunted back a week after a bus crass tragedy but they're having both the semis in one weekend next week so they still have the final on the same date). They have this weird ESC-meets-Strictly style scoring system and so far, Gigi's got the highest combined total

Whilst Adam's got the highest televote (the only one so far to get an 8/10 in the televote 'fifth judge' category)

Kallay-Saunders Band in the semis! Very happy to see that, they had the joint second highest total in the heats and judging by the scoring they just need to connect with the viewers more. Fingers crossed they give out a bangin' performance in the semis and the Hungarian GP fall in love with them just like they did with Running three years ago wub.gif

Still can't quite get on board with the Gabi Tóth hype (she's dropped the Totova stage name now) but she has LOADS of momentum on fan forums, although I imagine she'll do a Gergo Olah at this stage and lose out in the superfinal.

I'm much more on board with this other ethnic entry though, fantastic mix of modern beats and traditional ethnic sounds and vocals! Feels like something a Pavel or an Iz would be on board with.

(He joint-won tonight's first semi final)

AMAZING. The rap cheapens it slightly though. With incredible staging this could easily go top 10

Posted by: mdh 12th February 2017, 11:09 PM

Kallay are in the final!!

Posted by: The Wise Sultan 12th February 2017, 11:36 PM

Any protest entries against Viktor Orban? I was hoping for a political entry against his migrant policy.

Posted by: Ryan. 12th February 2017, 11:52 PM

Judging by semi scores, looks like Joci, Gabi and Gina should all make the final 4 - then probably Gigi unless Kallay finds some more jury support again. From there Gina has no chance and I guess the two ethnic entries may split the vote to allow a Gigi or Kallay win, quite unpredictable. My instinct is saying a Joci win though!

TOMORROW'S NATIONAL FINAL...
HUNGARY

A Dal

18th February 2017
Begins at 6.30pm in the UK or 7.30pm Central European Time and in Hungary.
Programme is scheduled to last 2 hours 10 minutes.

Watch the selection via the http://www.mediaklikk.hu/a-dal.

The participants
Gabi Tóth & Freddie Shuman feat. Begi Lotfi - Hosszú idők
Gigi Radics - See It Through
Gina Kanizsa - Fall Like Rain
Joci Pápai - Origo
Kállay Saunders Band - 17
Leander Kills - Élet
Soulwave - Kalandor
Zävodi & Olivér Berkes - #háttérzaj

Voting format
The voting will consist of two rounds. The first round of voting will be 100% jury voting in which the four jurors will each give out 4, 6, 8 and 10 points to their favourite 4 entries. The four acts with the most points will progress to the second round. This second and final round will then be decided by 100% televoting where the winner will be chosen!

The favourites to win
We aren't aware of any betting odds, but it is believed that the two clear favourites are Joci Pápai and Gabi Tóth. Both have regularly scored highly with juries and app voters alike in previous round. Previous rounds also suggest Gina Kanizsa is a likely superfinalist, although poor app votes suggest she won't have the televote support to win. Gigi Radics and Kállay Saunders Band have both had app voting support in previous rounds, but less jury support than the aforementioned three. Nevertheless if either of these two do make the superfinal, they could challenge the favourites.

Superfinalists are Gigi Radics, Gina Kanizsa, Joci Pápai and Zävodi & Olivér Berkes. Gabi misses out in 5th place after round 1, quite the shock!

Origo wins! cheer.gif Was my favourite of them all I think, maybe except Kallay so great choice!

At least SOMETHING went right tonight.

Instant fav of all the chosen entries so far.

LOVE THIS, it seems ages since we had something properly ethnic at Eurovision, really hope it can continue Hungary's amazing qualification streak.

Posted by: mdh 19th February 2017, 11:47 AM

NO. Once again Kallay were totally robbed, 17 was a far superior song. Next year they'll be back.

Bit of a risk for said qualification streak but I'm very glad they've gone this way, it felt like they were eternally heading down the safe route - they have such an amazing unique culture in Europe so I'm glad they're showing some of it. Not sure this is hitting me the way I want all ethnic music to hit yet but we'll see how it goes.
