Well Hello to you!

With the cold weather here it seems the right time to launch my final Top 100 thread of the year. So here's the top 100 best selling hits of December for your enjoyment!

How this is compiled

Easy- The four chart weeks (up to and including the Christmas Week) are added together for each song's total in each year 1980-2014 and ranked here for your pleasure. Some songs didn't chart until the Christmas week in their respective year but if they sold enough then they're here!

If a song charts in different years under this system- quite common now in the download/ streaming age, then only its highest selling year would be eligible in this countdown and no cumulative totals will be allowed where these accrued in different years.

So for example to do the calculations for 2003 the chart weeks 6/13/20/27 December would be added together meaning that Will Young would get a total from 4 weeks but Michael Andrews/ Gary Jules would only get one week of eligible sales.

As per all the normal threads if we could not do any spoilers then it would be greatly appreciated- Let's not spoil the moment eh! biggrin.gif

I'll be counting down 100-51 and for the first time ever part 2 will be taken over by someone else! ohmy.gif

Please do comment on the tracks as they come up as it greatly enhances the enjoyment of the thread peeps!

So grab a mince pie and turn that heating up another notch for the Top 100 best selling December hits of the past 35 years.....

100. JCB SONG- Nizlopi (2005) 241,000

Tipped by some as the Christmas No 1 for 2005, this track was initially issued in June of that year peaking at the giddy heights of 160 but word started to spread about the track with its cute video and before long it was touted as the “alternative” to X Factor for that year, it debuted brightly at No 1 on sales of 81,000 and beat Westlife into the bargain (always a joy to see at the time) but nothing could quite prevent the X Factor onslaught….that year anyway.

99. YOUR SONG- Ellie Goulding (2010) 242,000

The Elton John classic had already been a top 10 hit twice for the man himself by the time Goulding recorded her version in 2010, and what do ya know she ended up having the highest charting version of the song when she took it to No 2. It was produced by Ben Lovett (of Mumford & Sons) and was used as the lead single from her “Bright Lights” re-issue of her debut album as well as the John Lewis Christmas TV campaign which all helped to generate interest for the track.

Ah I actually do love JCB Song wub.gif was disappointed to see Shayne Ward topple it but it held up remarkably well still.

Your Song is an 'ok' cover, nothing more.

JCB Song is awful, I wasn't here at the time (being in Australia where it charted at #43) so thankfully missed it being a thing - but I'd like to think it only sold on the video rather than the actual lack of song quality.

Your Song was a great cover version, though she has since topped that effort multiple times.

Oh I think il love this thread smile.gif

JCB song was great - it actually increased its sales on Xmas week selling around 189k and at the time I was greatly excited it would beat Shanye Ward but alas my time would come 4 years later!

Oh yay, I do love a good ol' Gezza thread!

'JCB Song' has always been a firm winter favourite, both the song itself and the video are still so incredibly endearing. heart.gif

'Your Song' is a pretty nice cover as well, that's when I started to take notice of the John Lewis campaign I believe. Who knew what kind of juggernaut it was to become! That could be said for Ellie as well actually, I never thought she'd trump the success of that but she did it and more!

Loving this already, keep it up!

I think the JL ad is on a downward spiral now or maybe it's just this yrs track hasn't connected?!

Have the JCB Song on cd single, really enjoy it and as you say it's a winter favourite of mine - I put it on my Xmas playlist still.

98. IF YOU’RE NOT THE ONE- Daniel Bedingfield (2002) 242,000

The first of two Daniel Bedingfield tracks to appear on this list, he was actually No 1 on both his 22nd and (in this case) his 23rd birthday. He wrote this track as his attempt to get a record deal by aping Westlife records as he saw this as the easiest way to hook a deal, looks like he was right. The song had drifted to No 6 by the end of the eligible sales period but these aren’t bad sales for 2002 helped by the “Metro Mix” which had considerable airplay at the time.

97. TIME (CLOCK OF THE HEART)- Culture Club (1982) 243,000

Riding high after the success of “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” Culture Club took full advantage of media furore surrounding frontman Boy George’s appearance to score a second top 3 hit in late 82. It had the benefit of not being available on any album at the time but in the end it couldn’t quite replicate the No 2 position that it scored in the US.

Love that D-Bed track, one of the genuinely great pop ballads!

Not too big on that CC song, they had a lot better round that time.

Daniel Beddingfield: the noughties Sam Smith for me.

I do remember If You're Not The One being everywhere, much prefer Gotta Get Thru This though.

Ooh, great idea for a thread, Gezza! I was wanting to compile a playlist of December hits that make me think of Christmas, even though the songs aren't about Christmas. This thread will be very useful. *.*

Very interested to see where some of my faves end up in this list (namely, the Spice Girls kink.gif ).
