BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ The Chart Book

Posted by: kingofskiffle Mar 26 2017, 10:34 AM

I've decided to put together my own chart book. An advertisement - a couple of pages - is shown below. If you wish to buy the full book - for the 1950's only so far, with later volumes to follow should anybody actually want this stuff! - then please send me an email and I'll send details of payment.

Cost - £10. Delivery, by PDF.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/tblnwnlmmrd8jtl/1950s%20book%20-%2000%20-%20Advert.pdf?dl=0

The 1950's is a wonderful decade, with some amazing songs. Check out the book, and the material that isn't anywhere else in book form including length of record and composer credits.

Excellent work I love how you have put in Songwriters and b sides. Very similar to Joel Whitburn's American Top Pop Singles. If you did one for more recent years I would most certainly buy one from you.!

Posted by: Suedehead2 Mar 26 2017, 02:21 PM

Somehow I don't think it's a coincidence that Lonnie Donegan is included in your sample pages laugh.gif

Posted by: kingofskiffle Mar 28 2017, 06:57 AM

The plan is to continue as far as I can. Next decade is the 1960's, then I intend to do one for Albums for 1956-1969. Always assuming sales go well and people want it.

PM me your PayPal email address if you do want a copy.

Some have asked for a printed copy of the book. I have found a way to produce limited quantities of the book, which will cost £30 plus postage and packaging to wherever you are.

The printed copies are in the following style (see below) and to order these I will need approximately two weeks from recipe of your order. To order, I need your full postal address, including country. I will then calculate the postage costs and dispatch.

I understand that some require a printed version and so that is why this has been produced. I do however understand that some may find the costs here prohibitive, but the additional costs are what it will cost me to produce.

A4 sized coil (spiral) bound documents.
Bound on the short edge
Clear coloured coils (spirals).
Clear PVC cover (front).
Front cover printed colour outside, blank inside on 300gsm smooth matt (uncoated) card.
Back cover printed no printing (blank) on 300gsm smooth matt (uncoated) card.
Inner pages printed double sided on 80gsm smooth matt (uncoated) paper.
89 colour pages.
Despatched 7 working days from approval of artwork.
Normally delivered within 1 working day from despatch.
This item has been zero rated for VAT as it is a bound document.

Very good.

A suggestion for other editions, which you may wish to include is under neath the artist list the artists for which they have written hits for (if applicable). so for instance for Marty Wilde you could put The Casuals, Lulu, Kim Wilde, Peter Shelley

Posted by: kingofskiffle Apr 8 2017, 10:05 AM

Thanks for the suggestion. That is difficult and I'd need to consider how best to set that up in the database. I shall consider.

Posted by: kingofskiffle Apr 27 2017, 02:11 PM

I have created a website - http://thechartbook.co.uk - which is how I will sell these, with transactions handled by PayPal. I hope that you will almost automatically receive a copy of the book you order when my email opens and the transactions are processed. It's still a work in progress and I need to try and automate it better. But for now have a look and tell me what you think.

Posted by: Gambo Apr 27 2017, 04:54 PM

Lonnie this is most welcome - makes the whole process far-easier and I've just made my purchase via PayPal. I've yet to have a chance to fully-peruse the virtual tome on the 1950s singles, but I'm already thinking that a tenner is damn good value for such a piece of comprehensive work. Can't wait to be in possession of the full set but realise I must be patient as that is due what, 2020?!

Like for buses? It depends if you want them all. I have tried to design these so that they are separate books so you buy what you want. For example, if your not a fan of the 1970's then that volume wouldn't be one you'd buy.

Posted by: kingofskiffle Jun 6 2017, 06:20 AM

I'm not going to do a subscription model because, after careful thought, I can't guarantee to produce a new book every month or week or amount of time. I'm going to produce new books every month as a minimum but for some it might be longer between books. It all depends on the spare time I get.

But do please buy when you can. I'm not going to reduce the prices for a deal at any point (I know some book sites do) so rest assured the price is the price is the price.

Record Mirror Singles - 1955-1962 (Contains full weekly charts as well)
The Decade Series Volume 1 - 1952-1959 UK Singles Chart (The NME Chart for the 1950's)

All feature B-Sides, Composer credits and Label and Catalog numbers, together with duration (for Singles)
The layout is clean and clear and sample pages are available on the website

http://thechartbook.co.uk

Coming Soon
In the works are books on
The Decade Series Volume 2 - 1960-1969 UK Singles Chart (The NME Chart for the 1960 till March 3, then Record Retailer till 1969 then the Official Chart from 1969. Includes Breakers which have not been issued anywhere)

The Decade Series Albums Volume 1 - 1956-1969 UK Album Chart (Record Mirror 1956-1958, Melody Maker 1958-1960, Record Retailer 1960-1969, and Official Chart 1969). Will contain full track listing for all charting albums and list all re-entries, something no other book does.

The BBC Chart - 1955-1969 (Singles) - Before the official chart the BBC compiled their own chart. This volume covers those charts.

I also have Melody Maker and NME which I am intending to issue in due course. The Decade Singles and Albums series will continue to the current, with a target of end of the year for the 1970's, mid next year for 1980's, end of next year 1990's, middle 2019 for the 2000's and January 1st 2020 for the current decade. Exact make up is of course to be determined. I am doing these in my spare time so things may slip a little. Other volumes as and when, meaning Melody Maker, NME, etc around these.

Posted by: kingofskiffle Jun 19 2017, 10:09 PM

I've completed work on the 1960's volume of the Decade Series, listing the full UK Singles charts for 1960-1969. This contains not only the full Record Retailer charts but also the Breakers charts, researched form the original scans complete with duration, composer credits and B-Side details. These get their own line, even if they made the full Top 50.

This is the first time they have been comprehensively created in this way.

The 232 page volume has the important information you always wanted to see for each charted record:-

An update:-

In the process of uploading and sorting for sale a book on the UK EP Charts. This should be available for sale shortly, so do check out the website. It does not include the weekly charts as I do not wish to step on the toes of another excellent book by George R. White. However, my book does contain the track listing in order which I believe has not been done before.

Price is £7.50 and I hope you like it. Sample below.

An update:

I have just launched - for free - a book covering the Billboard Albums. Well, I say free I would like donations but you can download and keep. It is only current through mid 1963 and so I'll do more updates to it depending on interest. I'm listing Album Tracks but only for the ones I have and I encourage people to assist with the missing info, or where might find it typed and ready to copy. I am mining Discogs already. Equally, if you'd like any additions (Country and R&B Albums will be added in due course).

Information here http://thechartbook.co.uk/billboard.html

A book on the Melody Maker Singles (start to 1969) in production as well, with a target date of March when it will be available to buy.

Posted by: kingofskiffle Mar 2 2018, 07:38 AM

The Billboard book has been updated, with thanks to Chartaholic from UKMix. It includes up to December 1964 now and you can see the Beatles first year on the charts. I've changed layout a little to make it a bit more readable.

Do please comment and let me know what you think of the format and if anything should be changed - I want it readable!

Posted by: kingofskiffle Mar 18 2018, 01:22 PM

I have created two things which can allow people - I hope - to add album trac listings to my database.

Below is a Google Form

https://goo.gl/forms/5TLSmStCqZkeHyvV2

That allows you to locate the track listing on Discogs (or similar), copy just the section containing Track Number, Title, Duration (if shown) and paste and then also add a Prodrucer Credit if known.

You also add the track ID so I know I have the right album.

With over 30,000 albums needing track details added I can do this myself, and will, but it helps if others wish to - and have the time - can do something to assist.

One thing is needed - a Track ID.

Below is a link to a Google Document listing the album title, artist, entry date, peak, label, weeks and Track ID. Only listed are ones I am missing.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_lYwEycj1rgpnoWG3h00XPD4D6koiS2ebBlu33splMY/edit?usp=sharing

If you do not have much time, just locate one entry. You can get your name in the free book.

Billboard Albums Update!

I have just uploaded a new version of the Billboard Albums book. No new charts, so it still ends on 31 Dec 1966, but it does have many more album tracks. And I mean MANY more. Huge thanks to Iain Moffat who has been adding tracks from, mostly, 1960. That means almost all of 1960 is now done. Tracks have also been added by others, including Herby, who has been invaluable, so we now have all tracks up to January 1956. I have also been checking more entries and have now reached 1970, just need to sort out the artist sorting to get them all in the right place.

Do please let me know if you spot any errors.

No because this book is for the Melody Maker charts which where compiled by Melody Maker and not Billboard. Have a look at the sample I provide as that shows exactly what you get with one page from each section shown.

Lonnie - I'll buy all of your Books, as soon as they are all ready. I love Chart Books.
(I love many Books. I own about 1,500 and they cover many Subjects - all Non-Fiction).

I'll make sure to tell every 'Chart Expert' that I know, about your Chart Books.

Posted by: kingofskiffle Mar 26 2019, 07:09 PM

I'm in the process of re-building my website, so if you spot any bad links, do let me know. It also means that a couple of the books are offline for purchase right now. Other things will be added as well, as I transition to a Wordpress website layout which means I can accept comments and also make amendments more easily. Plus, I can give updates as to what's going on!

Some of you may be interested in the latest chart book I've just published.

Billboard began publishing charts in the 1930’s, but this, the Best Sellers In Stores Chart, was the first anywhere in the world to feature data gathered from actual over the counter sales. In this book we trace the history of this chart from the start to its end in 1958, several weeks after the Hot 100 had begun.

This book has the important information you always wanted to see for each charted record:-

B-Side
Full Composer Credits
Song Duration
Every Re-entry shown with entry date, peak and weeks
Full Weekly Charts! (A special bonus section at the back lists each and every weekly chart position used to compile the data in the book).
Together with the usual information such as entry date, label and catalogue number.

Once again, another book has been added to the website, together with a re-ordering of the site to (hopefully) make navigation easier.

The new book focuses on Billboard Albums between 1945 and 1959 and includes the EP chart and numerous other charts dedicated to albums in the same period.

Billboard began publishing an Album chart in 1945 and this book collects all of those published within this period, as well as the Billboard EP chart, which listed, in it’s easy days, some albums as well.

Full track listing of each album is shown, with tracks in the order they appeared on the release as well as their durations.

This is the first time these have been listed in this format making this a unique collection.

PDF download – only £10.

This book has 357 pages and needs to be seen to be understood. Click the link to view a sample.

Posted by: kingofskiffle May 25 2020, 02:47 PM

Thanks! So far, nothing. I'm working on a couple of 1980's ideas for by the end of the year. The way I have been working is to add from the start in order, so that I don't assign the record to the wrong entry, or get stuff wrong. Well, I'm sure I will get something wrong (!) but a lot less than otherwise. So far, the "new" database (from which the books are made) is up to 1985 for UK Albums, but I need to add more of the Melody Maker Albums and Singles.

The charts began in July 1940 with the launch of the Best Sellers In Stores chart, together with 4 regional charts. By 1955 the charts had grown and Billboard launched a Top 100 and finally in August 1958 the Hot 100, still going strong today. This series will focus on those charts, and others, providing new insights and new ways to view the data.

Subscribers get the full series, plus some free gifts, or whole decades can be purchased, or individual years. The first issue, 1940, launches on 8 August, so sign up now!

Do please check out the sample pages, from numerous volumes, on the page above. And, of course, feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

Just a reminder that if anybody is interested, the first three issues are out now

1940 onwards includes the Regional charts, produced at the time, while 1942 sees the start of the chart that becomes the R&B chart.

The 1947 chart book has been issued and contains 592 pages covering 5 charts, including the Juke Box Folk (Country) chart and the R&B Juke Box charts. I have just launched two new books on my website (though one is a much more expanded edition of one from 2017).

Record Mirror: This book is the definitive version of the Record Mirror charts.

Record Mirror Singles
The Top 10, later 20, singles chart runs from 1955 through to 1962, covering pretty much the whole Skiffle era, the rise of Elvis, Cliff and a host of other artists, as well as the change from the acts who dominated the early 1950’s through to the period just before the Beatles snuck onto the charts at the end of the year. 967 records by 518 artists appear, some being unique to this chart.

The British Artists Chart
This was not a new idea, as NME had run a British Artists Chart in 1954, covering a few short weeks until they expanded their main chart from a Top 12 to a Top 20 (See the 70 Years Series issue for 1954 for a full history of that chart). The idea was a good one though, and at the end of 1955 Record Mirror started a Top 10 British Artists chart, just at the right time to cover Rock Island Line charting for the first time where it would become a Number 1 – sadly not on the main chart. The British Artists chart was a Top 10 for its entire life, finally ending in 1961. This chart is one never before researched and I do find that a shame as, apart from giving Lonnie Donegan another number 1, it does provide an interesting snapshot, particularly in the lower region, of records not yet – or never – in the national chart. By mid 1956 NME would have a Top 30, so most of these records do chart elsewhere, but the early period does offer some interesting titles for perusal.

The LP Chart
Record Mirror produced the first LP chart in 1956, 2 years before Melody Maker and while those two years of Top 5’s are now part of the official chart canon, subsequent years are not, of course, as Melody Maker had a larger chart, and those years (1958-1962) have never bene researched – until now. Some albums appear for the first time, including two I have been unable to find the durations for sadly (so maybe a 4th version of this book will be produced?) and the full history and track listing of these albums is unique to this volume.

The Book
I’ve had a great deal of fun putting this together, and researching from original scans of the charts as printed all the data.

Check out the sample on the website, or the page her lets you purchase the book for £10 for 400 pages.

My other new book is a Decade series for Billboard Pop Singles for the 1940's.

Following on from my successful UK Singles Decade Series, I now launch the same for the Billboard Pop Charts, begun in 1940 and continuing to this day.

For those wishing to purchase, please note that each is available as a free gift to those subscribing to either a full year, or the full series of my Billboard 85 Years series.

Volume 1 contains over 1,200 pages (for just £10), in full colour, covering full chart data with exact peak positions as denoted on each chart for the Billboard best Sellers In Stores Chart, begun in 1940 and stoped being compiled in 1958, as well as almost 5 years worth of Regional charts (from the East Coast, Mid-West, South and West Coast), together with the 1944 begun Juke Box chart and the 1945 begun Disk Jockey (radio plays) chart.

Each entry contains the composer, duration, B-Side, and full chart history for each appearance on each chart.

For those who wish to have all of the 1980's charts - including the complete Top 200 - I have just launched a new book on the website covering the Gallup Top 200 form 1983-1989 and the weekly BMRB charts for 1980-82. To purchase the £15, 4,000 page book head over to the website. A sample set of pages is also presented.

I have been wanting to do this book for a long time, and now, finally, I can!

This volume – my largest book yet – contains over 4,000 pages with the BMRB charts for 1980-1982, and then the complete Gallup Top 200 charts from 1983-1989, complete with panel sales. The book covers all Top 200 charts and lists the full weekly charts – including the starred out records, removed via exclusion rules, in there proper place. The book adds up the panel sales for the chart run and is, quite simply, my favourite chart book.

This book does come a little more expensive, at £15, but I think you will agree that the huge page count makes it worth it. The book is delivered as a link, as the book is over 50Mb in size, due to the huge wealth of information. Virtually all entires include full B-Side listings, label, catalogue number and duration, although of course some entries do miss this due to the inability to locate the records concerned.

Some of the data has been posted on the forum UKMix, and I am very grateful to both Robbie and of course kobyhadrian for supplying the original Top 200 data.
