BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 26th June 2021, 12:42 PM

Ed Sheeran aims to score his tenth #1 single with Bad Habits. The new Doja Cat & Tyler, The Creator albums could impact the chart, including Doja’s single You Right featuring The Weeknd. Other new tracks come from Aitch, Bastille, Fredo, MIST and Riton

Jack Savoretti could top the album chart for a second time with Europiana, with big releases from Tyler, The Creator with Call Me If You Get Lost and Doja Cat with Planet Her likely to land a high debut. Other new albums include Beartooth, John Grant, Gorgon City, Modest Mouse, Hiatus Kaiyote and UB40

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.

- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).

Hopefully with the physical of BH in the shops, it can help Ed knock Olivia off the top

Hopefully Jack Savoretti does well this week. His new album is very Radio 2 but it’s a pretty decent listen

I hope KMM has avoided ACR. It would be a shame for it to go ACR as the album is released

Posted by: Sour Candy 27th June 2021, 07:06 AM

It hasn't I can tell you. It was down 200k in Spotfy.

I doubt her team care about the UK charts *that* much laugh.gif

Posted by: Hadji 27th June 2021, 12:20 PM

At least it will give a chance for YR to become a smash

Posted by: Bré 27th June 2021, 12:22 PM

Releasing a week earlier would have been good for her (actual) chart interests elsewhere though as it were. It's looking like Tyler, The Creator is going to be #1 very comfortably in the US this week with Doja fighting for #2 with Olivia, she could have had a good shot at a #1 album if she'd dropped last week, at least would have been guaranteed top 2. (I expect she'll get #2 this week anyway though especially with the deluxe version released today giving it a little bit of a boost)

Posted by: Bjork 27th June 2021, 12:24 PM

Like if a US label would decide on a worldwide release date on the basis of the lead single hitting ACR in the UK...
wonder if Doja Cat even knows about the existence of the UK charts biggrin.gif

when they call UK artist from the >Chart Show, half of the time it seems like they don't even know where the UK is biggrin.gif

Although I don't think she would have overturned a 13k deficit from KSI to get to #2, so perhaps the only benefit would have been even more weeks at its #3 peak (which it already has the record for).

Anyway it should be an interesting battle for #1 this week. I expect Ed to be #1 in First Look because of iTunes, but Olivia could close the gap as more streaming data is added later in the week.

Ed Sheeran’s new single Bad Habits is off to a strong start on this week’s Official Singles Chart, currently at Number 1 on the First Look.

The song, which picked up 1.5 million streams in its first 48 hours, could earn Ed his tenth chart-topper if it holds on until Friday (July 2).

After five weeks at the top, Olivia Rodrigo’s Good 4 U looks set to drop to Number 2, while The Weeknd’s Save Your Tears completes the Top 3.

Italian rockers Måneskin are on track to continue climbing the Top 10 with two songs: I Wanna Be Your Slave lifts one place to Number 5, while their cover of Beggin’ is up three spots to Number 7.

Calvin Harris could score his 27th Top 10 single this week as By Your Side ft. Tom Grennan hops one place to Number 10.

Further down, Doja Cat & The Weeknd’s You Right – taken from Doja’s newly-released album Planet Her – opens at 14, while Becky Hill & David Guetta’s Remember is on course to break into the Top 20, up four places to 18.

I'm not ready for Good 4 U's reign to end just yet - not that I don't think she won't rise back next week if Ed does manage it on Friday. (Unless Maneskin has a surprise in store which I would very happily welcome)

Posted by: CJK 27th June 2021, 05:56 PM

I'd like Ed to be No.1 this week. It's a good track.

Also, I'd prefer to see Good 4 U decline naturally than be forced into a massive drop due to ACR like what happened with Drivers Licence.

Posted by: Bjork 27th June 2021, 06:19 PM

boo at MW not reporting the difference, that was the only interesting thing about today's update
I'd say if Ed is #1 is all down to the downloads rather than the physical CDs

Posted by: Bré 27th June 2021, 06:38 PM

I do like 'good 4 u' more as a song out of the two but I think 'Bad Habits' is pretty good as well and it'd be great to see another artist reaching the milestone of 10 #1 hits so I'm not really too bothered about who ends up getting the #1 this week but slightly rooting for Ed to pull it off. That is annoying that the OCC didn't bother reporting what the gap between them is.

Hope that 'I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE' will go top 5 this week as well - I was kind of expecting it to be higher than #5 today tbh but it has usually climbed over the week iirc?

It's £2.99 from HMV, but in fairness I doubt too many actually listen to the CD singles that are sold these days. (Unless they have something exclusive on them)

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 28th June 2021, 09:42 AM

6k seems possible for Olivia to overtake, but I'm pretty sure Ed will think of something during the week to help ensure he gets it.

Posted by: Benji89 28th June 2021, 09:47 AM

Are LM still at #4 please? And how much difference either side

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 28th June 2021, 10:06 AM

I’d say Ed’s got it in the bag this week.

If his iTunes downloads were slowing I’d say Olivia could have a chance but he’s still 90% + ahead of her on there, plus the 2 CD singles.

Posted by: JackTheeStallion 28th June 2021, 10:08 AM

I think Ed will get it this week but it'll most likely be a one week #1 and largely forgotten in terms of #1 singles this year.

Posted by: chartjack2 28th June 2021, 10:10 AM

Ed's been reduced to 59p on iTunes smile.gif

and moved up to track #1 on Hot Hits smile.gif

his label really knows how to play the game and they have all the resources too

I expect that gap will only increase, Ed won't settle for anything less than first place

(not that it matters since he's gonna be #1 in a few weeks regardless lol)

I think Ed will get it this week but it'll most likely be a one week #1 and largely forgotten in terms of #1 singles this year.

Keep clutching at those straws.

Bad habits will be around for months and months, and in the top 10 sellers of the year.

Posted by: Bjork 28th June 2021, 11:18 AM

I'd bet my money in a 1 week at #1 biggrin.gif

Posted by: Bré 28th June 2021, 11:47 AM

There is a pretty strong chance it gets to (/ back to) #1 by default after 'good 4 u' goes to ACR as long as it holds up reasonably well, which it has done so far. Although ofc that's still a few weeks away so plenty of time for a stronger contender to emerge (or for Olivia to swerve ACR somehow), but at the moment it looks to be pretty far ahead of everything other than 'good 4 u'.

QUOTE(chartjack2 @ Jun 28 2021, 11:10 AM) *
It’s still going to a great deal under 100k - considering Shape of You registered 227k chart sales first week, it’s a huge comedown

I mean tbf it was a 100% given that it'd have a significantly lower opening than 'Shape Of You' just because of how the market has changed since then, even the similarly dominant streaming smashes by Olivia this year only did a little under 120k in their peak weeks laugh.gif ('I Don't Care' is a fairer comparison and that did 124k first week)

Posted by: Benji89 28th June 2021, 12:02 PM

Bad Habits is a really generic song that goes absolutely nowhere. I'm not an Ed fan in general but he's had some really great songs in the past. This just isn't one of them
So yes, it will be successful - but only because it's Ed and only because he's paid for every streaming and radio privelage possible. But no matter how big the promo you can't polish a turd to the point where its number 1 for 10 weeks. 2/3 at a push but come September this won't even be top 40 and you can @ me

Posted by: 365 28th June 2021, 12:13 PM

It'll be very interesting to see how he holds up. 30k so far is very decent but a bit of the comedown to his usual numbers. I've seen a lot of his fans seem to have started noticing the transparency of his brand so a slight commercial decline was expected. Nothing too drastic though.

I think it's actually too early to call how he'll do post-week 1, and it's way too early to call if it'll be somewhat forgotten (for his standards) or one of the best selling singles of the year. Week 2's hold when he's not throwing quite as much at it will be the most interesting thing to track.

Posted by: Ho-Lee Smokes 28th June 2021, 02:19 PM

A 6k lead with streaming missing probably is very achievable for Olivia to overcome tbh, it will all depends on the gap on Spotify tomrorow tbh, if Olivia keeps a lead of 100k then I can see her overcoming Ed

Amazing sales for Heartbreak Anthem well up on last week.

Ed’s sales are pretty disappointing given he’s thrown everything at it this week. Video, physicals and all over radio.

Olivia could actually decrease the gap quite a bit by Friday.

'IGOR' was on 5.4k in its Monday midweek update so 'CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST' is looking to be opening a little lower (would be projected for 10.3k if it has the same growth from Monday to Friday as 'IGOR') - I understand that it's a more pure rap focused album so makes sense that it would have a little less mainstream crossover/staying power than 'IGOR' did, still pleased enough that it does indeed look safe to at least match the #4 peak of 'IGOR' and spawn one top 40 hit (assuming the other two will drop out). Doja's album is closer behind than I was expecting and her streaming numbers are holding up better so wouldn't be entirely surprised now if she ends up overtaking him, will definitely have a better long term chart run regardless.

Cool to see Hiatus Kaiyote showing up in the album mids, 'Red Room' from this album was a jam.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 28th June 2021, 05:22 PM

I think 'Beggin' could vault its way up to #3 this week, even though I'd much prefer IWBYS to stay ahead.

Posted by: Jade 28th June 2021, 05:26 PM

maybe if IWBYS misses out then it could climb next week if 'Save Your Tears' goes to ACR

I think it actually might be close for Jack - Olivia was on just under 7k
last week Monday and ended up on 20k, so she’ll probably do the same this week. It depends how frontloaded Jack is and whether can shift another 6k this week.

I don't think it's beyond Olivia to get the double again this week, will depend on just how front loaded Jack's album is but he's not as close to 20K as I'd hoped he may be.

I really don’t get how Ed is being desperate, he’s reducing prices for his physical single to ensure he debuts at #1 but when y’all fav pop stars reduce their album to £3.99 it’s seen as amazing marketing, I really think Ed gets too much of a hard time no matter how annoying he is!

Little Mix had a few overpriced things going that week but no where near the level of Kylie!

I admire his team for doing what they need to get the number #1 debut if it's not coming as organically as they like. In fact; I wish (and have been frustrated) that Little Mix and lots of other artists I support has reduced in their opening weeks (albums and singles) when they never did.

Saying that, I don't think I've ever seen a signed CD selling for as little as 99p before.

Nobody's saying he shouldn't do it, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily a good look. I'd be shocked if the label were expecting to go to these lengths in week 1 just for a #1 debut! I don't blame them for putting the effort in but I think we all know Ed is perhaps more focused on chart success than almost anyone. The hype, the budget for the video, the instantly HUGE playlist support, the commercial sound - they'd definitely banked on a very easy #1. If you told me last week that 99p CDs would be sold in an attempt to keep #1, I'd have been gobsmacked.

Lewis Capaldi had 3 different signed CD singles available for £1 and Dermott Kennedy knocked out signed ones for £2... I think in the era of streaming that the CD single could become a new chart battle tool.

Posted by: JosephStyles 28th June 2021, 09:07 PM

Occasionally artists have released CD singles in recent times - Wellerman, Blinding Lights and Justin Bieber's Holy, Anyone and Lonely all had CD singles for example, but they don't really sell in big quantities for the most part. Even Coldplay's Higher Power CD (which sold relatively well for a CD single in its first week) only turned it into a #12 hit instead of a #13 hit. Ed's low price point will undoubtedly help on that front though!

It's always the same, Ed does something it's desperation but the same people saying that sit in their favourites forum begging for them to do the same. It's desperation when someone you don't like reduces a price or adds another format but a clever tactic when it's your favourite.

Forget Ed, the big story of the week is Tones & I coming to shake that one hit wonder tag dance.gif

Also is Aitch underperforming? I mean it's a shit song but would it not have expected to be sitting in the top 20 in the first mids?

Posted by: Bré 28th June 2021, 11:26 PM

It's looking to be Aitch's highest charting song as lead artist since 'Rain' so I wouldn't say it's doing too badly. UK rappers' chart histories are almost all all over the place as the level of hype seems to vary wildly between releases.

Posted by: steve201 28th June 2021, 11:45 PM

Love how the current Pink single is always at 40 in the first mids lol and ends up at 44!

Posted by: Bjork 29th June 2021, 06:07 AM

but releasing multiple formats of a release vs dropping the price midweek are very different tactics and not comparable at all

releasing multiple vinyls and cassettes, thats a good marketing strategy and thats what collector want, the label is just giving the people what they want, so release as many format as they want the label gives people choices, that's it, no one has to buy the 13 vinyls,... for me, thats good marketing

dropping the price of an album in half midweek on the other hand is pure desperation and an insult to most fans that have faithfully bought the album on release date at full price... so not the same thing, kinda the opposite...

Unfortunately though that seems to be part of labels marketing - I mean you could pick up Olivia’s album for £4.99 by week 2.

Looking at some #1’s in recent times The Snuts, Dua Lipa, 5SOS, The 1975, Yungblud, You Me At Six, The Vamps etc., have all reduced to half price in the first week and it seems the norm rather than the exception because regardless of if an act is fighting for a #1, Top 10, Top 20 etc., a price reduction is always their tactic.

iTunes downloads are the same and it’s basically a 59p chart and now that we are seeing more and more physical singles selling for £2 and under I think that will be another new avenue labels go down.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 29th June 2021, 07:52 AM

Jack Savoretti has released some personally signed copies of the cd and vinyl, but that's at full price so 27 pounds for the vinyl
not cheap but sure it will help with sales without being desperate

There are only 5000 copies of Ed's CD single though I believe. They could've easily flogged more at 99p, so it can't just be desperation to get a #1.

The signed ones are already sold out.

Limiting numbers increases their collectibility though. It's better to have 5000 guaranteed sales than any number of possible sales when you might be looking at a tight race.

I think YouTube will be making a big difference in Doja Cats favour. It’s already on 19M world wide, where as Our Song has just hit 20M

Posted by: JulianT 29th June 2021, 01:24 PM

I think Ed should be pretty safe for #1 given how the Spotify gap has narrowed. It’s a good song so I’m not complaining - reminds me a lot of Cry For You by September though.

Posted by: jadesdaily 29th June 2021, 01:32 PM

ed sheeran is doing a lot to be number 1 so it doesn’t look like he’s fallen off. yes it’s done better than a lot of songs first week but bad habits has performed terrible compared to his other leads so he’s fallen off for his standards and you can tell he’s trying to gain back popularity by being ‘quirky’ with the whole emo music video cos today’s society likes stuff like that

I suppose fair play to him, he's gone for it and to be fair he's had much worse songs go to #1 in the past.

The signed ones are already sold out.

Wasn’t the 5k number for those distributed to HMV and Amazon, so not including the two signed 99p cd batches from his website?

It does seem a bit desperate, especially considering those people that bought the full priced unsigned ones from HMV/Amazon and the 59p drop. I echo what some others have said about midweek price drops so early on after release. Stuff like that only impacts the fans that invest in supporting a song/album on day 1.

Appreciate he cares about the charts though, not many artists show a passion for it like us chart followers. Wish more of my fave acts did follow it a bit more and made an effort when they see an opportunity like this. laugh.gif

All here for Jack Savoretti getting #1 on the album front. Not sure if that lead will be enough against Olivia’s streaming for the remainder of the week.

Posted by: JosephStyles 29th June 2021, 04:53 PM

For reference, Ed has "only" sold 1,260 CDs this week, and that's an increase of just 194 since yesterday. I expect not all orders have been processed yet so there'll be a few more to come but the CDs aren't really making any difference at all right now.

Posted by: Bjork 29th June 2021, 05:08 PM

good update for Savoreti, seems like he's not that front loaded so should do >20K and grab that #1

congrats to Ed's label, think they got it this week

Posted by: dandy* 29th June 2021, 05:12 PM

They've just shown Ed Sheeran in the crowd at Wembley sat next to David Beckham, honestly the lengths he's going to for promotion in his first sales week kink.gif

Also... for what it's worth, I don't mind Ed's push to get the #1. It is a bit desperate, yes, and he really doesn't need to do it given his previous levels of success but it's kinda nice that an artist actually cares.

3 Lions to smash!

Posted by: Bré 29th June 2021, 06:39 PM

Doja closed the gap to Tyler by about 200 today, at that rate she will probably overtake but it'll still be pretty close so I wouldn't want to call it yet.

'Three Lions' seems to still be performing surprisingly underwhelmingly right now - it is doing better than it did during the Czech Republic match but not by a lot, currently still only #17 on Apple compared to being in the top 10 during both of the first two matches. Really thought there'd be a lot more hype for it with this being a knockout match. But then again it wasn't until the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2018 that it really started smashing and having a pretty historic knockout win over Germany might do the trick to revitalise the hype and push it up much higher for the next match.

Maybe. If England win on Saturday, the semi-final is on Wednesday evening. If England lose that semi-final, it could depend on whether the OCC assume that 3 Lions' streams on Thursday will be almost zero or not.

Aren't Thursday streams calculated using an algorithm? So even if we did lose on Wednesday and no one streamed 3 Lions on Thursday, the OCC would still use an average of the weeks streams to calculate a (rather unrealistic) number for Thursday. I'm not sure but I remember this being mentioned a fair bit when Mariah kept missing out.

Posted by: Bré 29th June 2021, 10:01 PM

I am not sure that anyone knows the specifics of what the OCC do with Thursday streams. It's worth noting that they do (presumably) get Thursday streaming numbers from Amazon at least, as well as other smaller services - wouldn't surprise me if they extrapolate streams from Spotify/Apple/YouTube based on the trends from the services that do report on time?

Yes, the rules do seem to allow them to make assumptions about trends. That means, for example, that they can assume that streaming of Christmas songs will have slumped if the Thursday is 27 December. They can, therefore, do the same with 3 Lions if England lose on Wednesday (assuming they get that far). Whether they use any streaming data they do have available to influence their calculations, I don't know but it would make sense for them to do so.

I think the 2-0 against Germany has really picked up momentum for the tournament which was flagging before, most people assumed we would be out last night. If we win Saturday, I wouldn't be surprised to see Three Lions as a midweek #1 but all of this depends on England's performance of course.

No ones saying anything about 250k sales but to debut on Spotify well below Olivia’s 4/5th week on 560k streams is poor by Ed’s standards.

The fact they produced 5k of each of the CD singles and have sold 1.6k should tell you enough.

My point was the label / ED will be disappointed to be doing not even half of his usual debuts with big single releases.

Let’s not forget the fact he’s been placed #1 across all big streaming platforms biggest playlists too.

Yeh I get your point and it’s exactly correct but he is still number one and most likely will be on Friday so he will be happy with that I would say. Guess it depends on whether it continues to dominate in telnet way ‘Afterglow’ for example didn’t.

Actually it's not that hard and many have achieved #1 without the desperate shenanigans that Ed is doing...
Rain on Me, No Time to Die, Godzilla, Positions, Drivers License, Montero, all debuted at #1 and most of those barely had any playlist support on Spotify
and obv Bad Habits will have along chart run, his deals and pay checks sent to Spotify will ensure that lol biggrin.gif

If they have data from some streaming sites then they can assume the trend on the other sites will be the same. Ultimately, the rules don't stop them assuming streams will plummet to almost zero after England go out. They will, of course, have the relevant data from 2018.

Ed may be ahead of Olivia in daily stream numbers now? He is #1 on both Apple and Amazon (edit: well #2 on Amazon now actually because 'Three Lions', but still, ahead of Olivia x) and has closed the gap a lot on Spotify (and I'd presume he's doing better on YouTube too). Of course he's still way ahead on downloads too but no longer sure that he's only going to be #1 because of that, he had a very underwhelming start on streaming but has been making gains throughout the week. (Yes, it's been helped by Hot Hits, yada yada)

The gap between Tyler and Doja seems to have barely changed since yesterday, really rooting for Tyler to hang onto that #3 spot.

Was just thinking, when they get to ‘ain’t shit’ on the chart show on Friday how will Scott announce it, is there a clean title for it, similar to ‘build a babe’? 😂 and assume he will skip it as surely there isn’t a clean version?
I think sometimes Scott has avoided saying the title entirely, so he could just say "a new entry from Doja Cat" and move on (but I think 'Ain't It' is pretty likely too).

Just got dispatch emails for the signed Ed CDs so guessing that all of the signed copies may not have been added to the sales figures yet?

I haven’t got dispatch emails yet so almost definitely they haven’t been added in yet.

Interestingly, there's a clean version of Doja's entire album on Spotify (not unusual, many artists / labels do this for their releases), but it has one less track - they didn't even bother to make an edit of Ain't Shit laugh.gif

Great to have Ed back at No.1. Great artist. Listening to Divide now and wish they'd hurry up and announce SUBTRACT to complete a great quartet.

Also 'Subtract' should've been the name of his Unplugged album. sleep.gif

Divide should have been called Subtract because it's so reductive.
