BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: liamk97 25th September 2016, 11:21 AM

It's a Chainsmokers vs. James Arthur chart battle again this week, with The Weeknd and Daft Punk's 'Starboy' also posing a threat. Zara Larsson's 'Ain't My Fault' and Matoma & Becky Hill's 'False Alarm' should continue their ascent up the chart and Dua Lipa's 'Blow Your Mind (Mwah)' may also enter the Top 40.

In the albums, Bruce Springsteen's new compilation Chapter & Verse (released to coincide with his 67th birthday) seems the biggest contender for #1, with new albums Shine a Light by Billy Bragg & Joe Henry, FEAR by Marillion, The Black Parade/Living with Ghosts by My Chemical Romance, Young as the Morning Old as the Sea by Passenger and Illuminate by Shawn Mendes all aiming for Top 10 placings.

If you're top 40 on Spotify and top 50 on iTunes, could that secure a top 40 placing?

Posted by: SKOB 25th September 2016, 12:01 PM

Surely Illuminate will be #1 or #2?

Posted by: liamk97 25th September 2016, 12:07 PM

QUOTE(SKOB @ Sep 25 2016, 01:01 PM) *
Surely Illuminate will be #1 or #2?

It's not been doing very well on Amazon, I'd be very surprised if he managed to beat Bruce by Friday.

Posted by: SKOB 25th September 2016, 12:15 PM

Handwritten is gold certified after all and he has two hit singles right now... Will have massive streaming success. But yea Bruce's traditional sales are hard to beat if he's doing what he usually does sales-wise.

Posted by: timjimlee 25th September 2016, 12:45 PM

Illuminate has been number 1 on ITunes since Friday (rather impressively as the Deluxe edition is £11.99).
In all likelihood Shawn's Album will sell one of the higher percentages of downloads ( rather than CDs ) this week, Bruce's Album will be the other way round...

Posted by: timjimlee 25th September 2016, 02:34 PM

Bruce's last studio Album opened at beginning of 2014 with 48k, the archives have been well and truly plundered since then with at least 2 box sets and several concert performances being Released.
However latest Album (Chapter & Verse) looks more than just a regular compilation, it contains 5 unreleased songs and is a companion piece to Autobiography released this week.
Given Bruce's track record of 10 times at the top Shawn may struggle to make it to number 1 overall.

Posted by: girl_from_oz 25th September 2016, 04:51 PM

Must remember Usher was higher then Led Zeppelin all week on Itunes last week and he ended at 7 while Zeppelin ended up at 3

Posted by: Bjork 25th September 2016, 04:55 PM

very interesting week in albums and difficult to call, if it was a studio album sure Bruce would walk it but it's another Best Of and he's got quite lot of them already... still think he'll do it, cannot see Shawn Mendes doing more than 10K... ideally, Passenger would surprised them both smile.gif

also very interesting in singles with James Arthur doing double than Chainsmokers on itunes, while we have the opposite situation on streaming... although James Arthur seems to have it right now...

Posted by: cqmerqn 26th September 2016, 03:36 PM

I'm thinking #6 for Shawn. smile.gif

Didn't expect to see Passenger at #1!

Posted by: JosephStyles 26th September 2016, 04:34 PM

I had a feeling Shawn was being underestimated, it's good to see him at #3 and not far off #1. I don't expect him to take the top spot but I'm happy now! biggrin.gif

I still think he has a decent chance, his streaming will be a lot higher than the other Albums at the top end of the chart.

Posted by: Bjork 26th September 2016, 04:39 PM

yep I had the feeling Passenger might be #1 and that those that were saying Mendes was gonna be #1 were off
will be interesting to get sales

Posted by: pippa 26th September 2016, 04:41 PM

Would be wonderful of Passenger can retain the number 1 position. From the wide range of new entries i would think Marillion and My Chemical Romance will be the most likely 2 to drop from their current positions and officially have lower positions on Friday.

Posted by: ___∆___ 26th September 2016, 04:43 PM

Yes at Passenger - such a solid album and the fact that they have priced the standard version at £4.99 could just give him the edge to hold on.

Surprised that Shawn has not got it though - he's had a huge hit and sales are low, also disappointing to see Idina scraping Top 40 nocheer.gif

Posted by: cqmerqn 26th September 2016, 04:44 PM

Ellie at 11 again...

Posted by: Mart!n 26th September 2016, 04:47 PM

Most of those new albums will fall away by the end of the week

Posted by: pippa 26th September 2016, 04:50 PM

All the E's!! Emeli and Ellie need to keep climbing in the singles.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 26th September 2016, 05:08 PM

Led Zeppelin album already out of the Top 40 ohmy.gif

Olly Murs going to continue his wacky chart run by dropping out of the Top 25 laugh.gif

Personally, I would be quite happy if that Top 5 in the singles stayed the same, decent movement there biggrin.gif

Posted by: liamk97 26th September 2016, 05:26 PM

MW sales added.

Posted by: Bjork 26th September 2016, 05:29 PM

ohh decent sales for the top 4 albums, most surprised at Marillion!!!!

Posted by: Ðøßßø 26th September 2016, 05:29 PM

Pretty close between the top 2, not beyond the realms of fantasy that Closer could still snatch this back perhaps?

Excellent to see Ain't Giving Up back in the top 40, I saw that was picking up on streaming so hopefully can climb into a more comfortable position come Fri!

Posted by: Envoirment 26th September 2016, 05:47 PM

Looks very close at the top of the singles chart. James will likely snatch it though with streaming/airplay etc continuing to increase.

Passenger based on the sales information provided should open on over 20,000.

After a long drought we have a British #1 magic.gif but it had to be another ex X-Factor contestant after Zayn, I reckon The Chainmsokers will get it back later in the week. Gets me thinking the next British #1 will be the X Factor winners track laugh.gif

Hopefully Robbie Williams will get there, I quite like H.E.S. but I think its only a buzz track.

Posted by: burbe 26th September 2016, 06:47 PM

The top 10 actually isn't looking that stale for once (although that could well change by Friday). I wouldn't mind James Arthur getting the #1 purely for freshness sake but he's probably gonna be lodged there for a while himself sleep.gif

Posted by: Herbs 26th September 2016, 06:50 PM

Brilliant to see Passenger at number 1. Brilliant sales. Anyone know what the two Whispers albums sold on first week?

Posted by: ElectroBoy 26th September 2016, 06:58 PM

This could be a good battle for the number 1 and I think will come down to how much James can increase on streaming. Download wise he has pushed Chainsmokers to 0.5 and streaming is still on the increase.

Posted by: Bjork 26th September 2016, 07:00 PM

just checked how the Whispers albums did for Passenger on week 1:

5 Whispers 23,278

12 Whispers II 5,423

Posted by: mr_pmt 26th September 2016, 07:11 PM

I'm gonna say the top 3 albums on Sunday could be...

1. Bruce Springsteen
2. Shawn Mendes
3. Passenger

*edit - I mean Friday of course.

Posted by: pippa 26th September 2016, 07:52 PM

I think the battle is between Bruce and Passenger and Shawn will be number 3 as a lot of his fans would be more the style to purchase instantly.

Posted by: Bré 26th September 2016, 08:33 PM

Really can't say I expected Passenger to even be challenging for the #1 album, especially after that reminder of 'Whispers II' not even shifting 5 figures in its first week which this new album has done already! Thought it'd be a pretty easy #1 for Bruce Springsteen but at the moment I wouldn't call it between any of that top 3. Exciting ~ nice to see a vaguely unpredictable race for #1 on the singles chart for once as well.

Posted by: Bré 26th September 2016, 08:35 PM

Although of course the main chart story of the week...

THE RETURN OF ALBUM CHART SAVIOUR SIR BONAMASSA IN THE MIDWEEK TOP 10!

Okay well fair enough, his name gave it the platform to launch off, I don't mean that every good song ever will shoot to #1.

But what I mean is that.. even though nobody I know really cares about or likes James, the reception to the song itself has been incredible.

I agree somewhat, but I also think Shawn will get more casual buys than Bruce or Passenger, plus he'll have a streaming advantage over them so the #1 could certainly go in his favor.

Yeah I got what you meant! Basically with somebody like James Arthur, his comeback single by rights should have bombed, but the fact that it's (arguably) a decent song has turned that around and made it a hit. I'm all for shock Numbers 1s anyway so I'm happy smile.gif

Shawn Mendes had tweeted earlier in the week that if his fans streamed his Album "Illuminate" on Spotify you would automatically be entered into a competition with a chance to meet him.
The reality is this is only eligible for US based entrants but this was not really made clear in the tweet.

Seems a bit of an underhand tactic to inflate streams in the week of Release, this tactic would surely not be allowed for UK chart?

^^ There's lots of that kind of promo going on, Sam Bailey was calling/face timing fans last week that proved they bought her album on Thursday which I assume was her attempt to stay Top 40. Looking at the tweets many fans bought a 2nd copy in order to get a call.

James has extended the lead - I think its his now especially as he pulled even further away on itunes and has closed the streaming gap considerably

This will make James Arthur the first ever male winner of XF to achieve two UK #1's. ohmy.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th September 2016, 05:56 PM

Would I be right in saying he'd be only the second male soloist from X Factor to get 2 or more #1s? The first being Olly Murs thinking.gif or have I forgotten someone heehee.gif

Posted by: Hadji 27th September 2016, 06:05 PM

Marillion would be on course to score their second #1 album had they released last week

Yep, as far as I know!

Shayne Ward I believe has one number one and a couple of top twos, but nobody else has that level of success, let alone two #1's.

Top 50/ 60, its not even into 4 figures when the rest of the top 40 is (Monday sales) plus the track has no streaming sales.

Yeah I think you're right - male XF soloists have terrible form in the charts. laugh.gif And to think Will Young and Gareth Gates were both massive not long before XF began.

True I guess this will be his first on his own merit.

Posted by: Jonjo 27th September 2016, 11:30 PM

Would this also make James Arthur the first artist to not be streaming number 1, but number 1 officially (not counting Charity/special releases)? (Since the streaming rule came into place) If not, he's surely one of just a few, right?

(Hope that makes sense lol)

Posted by: Doctor Blind 27th September 2016, 11:34 PM

Nope because KDA, Tinie Tempah and Katy B made #1 last October whilst only peaking at #9 on streaming.

Sam Smith also bullDOZEd his way to #1 with next to zero streaming in October 2015, peaking at just 15 on streaming - he also claimed he was the first gay man ever to be #15 on streaming and yet #1 on the official chart.

Nope, there's been plenty of official chart toppers that didn't get anywhere near #1 on streaming! Mainly from when held-back releases were more common. However every #1 this year has been #1 on streaming, so it could well end up being the first #1 this year not to be #1 on streaming at some point too. Time will tell on that front! Closer for example climbed to #1 on streams during its 2nd week at #1 officially, as did Stitches, so who knows right now.

I think I answered that correctly! laugh.gif

STEAMING. I meant streaming, though the kettles will be boiling overtime in Hadji's kitchen if he stays at number 1 for (god forbid I even say it) a SECOND week !!!!

But steaming IS included in the charts, as I http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=169104&st=60 -

QUOTE
The Official Chart company, in their infinite wisdom, discovered that if a kettle was boiled in a certain way, would emanate the sounds of a popular song. As of last month, every time this occurs, the OCC logs this as one "steam". 100 "steams" = 1 sale. Of course, this addition caused a lot of controversy with chart fans, as this gets logged regardless of whether the water and kettle was boiled by the person who paid for both, but the OCC have claimed that this addition makes the charts for representative of what's popular, and of course the OCC are infallible in these matters. So "steaming" will remain a part of the chart for the forseeable future.

As far as I know there is no CD availabe, but he is doing very good on amazon downloads. The 2-track-bundle is No. 1 in the albums and "You make me feel ..." No. 17 in the tracks chart there.

Looks like Bruce does have another #1 album after all then as he is pulling ahead of Passenger and Shawn doesn't seem to be holding up any better. Although you never know with Shawn's likely streaming advantage that won't be reflected properly in the mids I guess.

He's been promoting the battle on Facebook too, saying he's neck and neck with Bruce for #1 in the UK, Aus and NZ and asking everybody to buy it (he also mentions it being £4.99 on iTunes). He has 3.6 million fans on his page so would have had quite an impact I think.

He's also selling CDs along with tour tickets here and promoting that: http://www.banquetrecords.com/NS171116
